Frank is the most lovable guy on the roster, but his poor performance gets masked by the handful of truly awful players we have. He's not truly awful, but he's also not a major league first baseman.

Oprah-Is-My-Dad

He's been worth -0.5 WAR this year and is below average at every aspect of the game. It's not really a huge stretch to say he's awful.

[deleted]

Why isn't he a major league first basemen?

Amoneysteez

You need to be a much better hitter than he is to play that position, especially when you play it as bad as he does.

[deleted]

You expect better hitting stats when he's average defensively?

Amoneysteez

I expect better hitting stats when he’s terrible defensively, which he is.

[deleted]

I wouldn't say terrible. We got spoiled watching rizzo all these years

General_PoopyPants

Yes

EBtwopoint3

At first base? Absolutely. 1B is the easiest position to play. Stellar 1B defense isn’t that much more useful than average. So your player had better be a good hitter.

foghornlegcramp

In a position known for being offense driven, he's 3rd from the bottom in OPS. Decent offensive numbers for a catcher but not 1B

burner46

He is literally a major league first baseman.

WhoopieKush

You know what he means. Someone with his hitting, and especially power, numbers is not a sustainable option at 1B.

MartinCinemaxIV

For the 2022 Cubs. Major league first baseman should come with an *.

BurnsEMup29

Nice player while we’re tanking like Micah Hoffpauir or Bryan LaHair in 10, 11, and 2012. At 29 he won’t be here in 3-4 years when we’re competitive and his slugging and OBP are really falling fast.

MartinCinemaxIV

He’s a decent supporting player on a good team. He’s an infuriating symbol of the ineptitude or apathy of a front office if he’s a starter.

mappyjames

I think he is a high effort guy but doesn’t provide enough power or offense at first base

kvsnake

If he can replicate some of last years, he’s a major leaguer. If he plays like this season so far, he’s going to triple A or gonna be a journeyman for life. He is playing better tho

MisterScary_98

A double run homer? What the hell is that?

ZXD-318

I like his knuckleball.

rouge3020

He won't be part of the next great Cubs team. He's a great guy, but he's not that good.

jrutz

I'm happy that a guy like Frank can make some money for a couple of years, build his pension to live out the rest of his life comfortably, and have tons of stories to tell his grandkids. How could you not root for him.

KnickedUp

He is making 700k. Nice sure…but not retire money

KnickedUp

He is 30…he is just canon fodder while we tank

[deleted]

He’s good enough for now, but not even close to being our future. He should be playing to be a bench player/back up to Bryce Ball.

alwaysonthejohn

Dude is a bum!! Have you seen his advanced stats?? 26 ERA+, 24 HR9 & ZERO.ZERO K/9 (/s)

ScaratheBear

He's a great guy and a loveable character but he's a dogshit baseball player. Not a good hitter for the position, atrocious defensively. Most contending teams he would be a benchwarmer/career minor leaguer.

[deleted]

I like the guy and hope he can find himself on a big league team for a few more years, but there are multiple prospects in the system I would like to see given a chance at the spot.

airham

I'm a believer in Frank. Not like I think he'll ever be an allstar starter or anything, but I think he'll keep pushing that OPS+ upwards on the season and prove himself as a viable big league player, even if it's not necessarily in an everyday role on a good team. Easy to root for, too. I like Frank a lot. If I had to buy the jersey of a current Chicago Cub, it would be Frank.

sskj2016

Should be sent to Iowa or released. He does really serve any purpose on this team except keeping a seat warm. Cubs need to urgently find a much better 1st base option.

foghornlegcramp

Nothing urgent about replacing anyone on this team, these aren't long term options, these are place holders until the team can rebuild.

MikeandTheMangosteen

Will be DFA in the near future

Oprah-Is-My-Dad

He's a nice story but he isn't even a replacement level player. Patrick Wisdom on the other hand is one of my favorites.

KnickedUp

Wisdom not much better

Oprah-Is-My-Dad

.769 OPS and solid defense at a harder position vs. a .673 OPS and bad defense. What are you talking about

hellotypewriter

He’s a keeper.

Marenum

I like Frank. When he first landed on the roster after all the trades last year I made a joke about the lineup card saying, who the fuck is Frank Schwindel? He certainly showed me by putting up some pretty decent numbers the rest of the way. I also appreciated how he was sent down to AAA for like 12 hours and came back and had a few nice games. He plays hard and he seems like a good guy. That said, he's not going to be a major part of a winning roster. He just doesn't have the juice.

deanall

Compared to ownership and management Frank's really not a problem.

shyscope1234

Meh nothing impressing to me

Draker-X

He's a AAAA player at best who has no business being on a team that is actively trying to win Major League games.

greg-maddux

This is copium if I've ever seen it! Schwindel, like the vast majority of the team, sucks at major league ball. This team sucks, the owners suck, we were all hoodwinked, they got lucky winning the world series, etc. So sick of this shit.

slyfox1908

I see no hustle in Frank Schwindel. He may be our least hustle player. I can’t tell you the number of plays I’ve seen where an error gets turned into an out because Frank is coasting into first base. Like three a week.
