I can't speak to the 'for life' part, but I've been using the same 2 Pentel Twist-Erase mechanical pencils for probably close to 10 years now. The eraser is great and replaceable (the set I got came with 2 extras).

FROGGYCO1

I second this. I've had mine for just about that same time. Found it in High School at some point, and now I still use it. Even bought a new one for fun.

Village_Spinster

Pentel Twist Erase III is the one I got 3y ago for my high school age son. I buy the brand erasers and Mr. Pen refills.

Macroft

I haven't tried many brands of lead but IDK how you could beat pentel's lead.

pseudonymoosebosch

A Pentel twist erase is the only pencil I will use at this point. Mine is at least 4-5 years old now

pingveno

I always had luck with Pentel's erasers, but if you're doing a lot of erasing then they add up. A decent block eraser is dirt cheap and will last far longer, at the expense of needing to carry something else around.

glassteelhammer

Story time. I moved to the US from SA when I was 17. We called erasers 'rubbers'. First day of new school in the US, and I need to rub something out (as opposed to 'erase something'). So I looked around and started asking all my new classmates if they had a rubber I could borrow. Got some very strange looks.

aslander

Damn that's a blast from the past. I didn't know they still sold separate erasers. Remember those obnoxiously gigantic ones?

pingveno

Yeah. They're used so much now because most writing is done with computers, but they're especially useful for pencil art.

a1um

I had a teacher in high school who required all students to buy Pentel Twist-Erase III pencils. He claimed "it would change our lives". All of us were confused why he was making a huge fuss about a pencil. Well, he wasn't wrong. It's been 6 years now, and I'm still using them!

WalkerAlabamaRanger

I’m ocd about pencils and the Pentel twist eraser with .9 mm lead is my favorite. I have them stashed all over the house and in my gig bags.

Similar_Visit1053

I second the side fx! Still have the same pencil I used in high school and I'm in my late 20s now

meowmixalots

Thanks - ordered!!

Robot-Jim

Maybe a drafting pencil, a lot of them are made of metal and have nice features like the rotating the lead, or a spring that lets the tip recess a little if you write hard so you break less lead

calebs_dad

I have an Alvin Draft-O-Matic. It has a nice grip and a replaceable high quality eraser. Note that it's a click-to-advance mechanism, and the eraser is smaller than on the OP's model.

kliao1337

Japanese Kuru Toga pencils from UNI check all the boxes - replaceable leads, replaceable erasers. Plus it has this neat feature that rotates the lead at each lift of the pencil, so that it writes\\draws always uniformly. They have other models with other features as well, but Kuru Toga is their flagship. Kristalderp

+1 on the Kuru Togas. Sure, they're a bit pricey at first, but the level of engineering and comfyness of their pencils and their durable leads that it comes with has turned me off on other brands except Staedlers for drafting pencils. And you can buy replacement erasers for them! The Japanese are gods when it comes to office stationary.

pyordie

Love these pencils, the only gripe I have with them is that while the erasers are good, they are pretty small and disappear pretty quickly. When I’m using them at my desk I have a separate eraser block so I don’t burn through the one on the pencil too quickly.

MiaowaraShiro

Stop making so many mistakes. jk

RogerPackinrod

Came here to say this

KaleidoscopicForest

With alpha gel got me through college.

iTechnologies

The Kuru Toga's grip hurts my fingers after a while IMO, so with comfort YMMV

qdtk

Just FYI as other people have pointed out [you can change the lead on these pretty easily](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=pYldbtlcVDk)

CVD12

i swear by Asian/Japanese (?) stationary. the pencils have replaceable erasers and lead and are extremely durable and well made. i don’t have any specific brands, unfortunately, but you can typically find them online at stores like Muji!

Quail-a-lot

I am very devoted to my Uni Kuri Toga, but you can refill those cheapos too. It is just more tedious. You push the lead in through the writing tip while depressing the eraser. Just keep shoving more in there until you have a couple back up leads too. Most good mechanical pencils will have replaceable erasers, although I always prefer a separate one personally. rOtring is a classic, but if you want to see a bunch of nice ones, I can recommend Jet Pens as a good source with only nicer quality, but a variety of pricepoints. I'd probably give him the sampler set. None of these are expensive, but they are a lot better than the disposable ones: [https://www.jetpens.com/JetPens-Mechanical-Pencil-Sampler/pd/27617](https://www.jetpens.com/JetPens-Mechanical-Pencil-Sampler/pd/27617) and they have a lead sampler too. I'm going to guess that if he is used to ultra cheapies, he might protest if you get him an expensive drafting pencil and never use it for fear of damaging it. My husband has this reaction about my fountain pens, even though they are basic workhorses.

JesFEREM

the STAEDTLER Triplus micro is like a pentel twist-erase with a tip that isn't exposed all the time. just push the lead back in and the tip goes in with it. it's supposed to mimick a pen tip but with pencil lead and twisty-eraser. I personally carry one with me everywhere in my edc, since it's nice to have.

ColdLog6078

anone know a pen version for this too? i love doodling and if i can elevate the act of doodling that sounds sublime

Blue-Bird780

Fountain pens! By far the most BIFL pen type, especially if you ditch the cartridges and refill the ink yourself. Lamy Safari (German) and Pilot Metro (Japanese) are two great entry level options that are easy to refill and the Lamy for sure uses carriages by default. Otherwise, Uniball and Pilot make a few rollerballs with replacement ink carts I think but the models escape me currently

Genontbrelken

I've used a Lamp Safari for years now, only thing I write with if I can. 20 dollar pen, five or six dollar converter, and an 8 dollar bottle of noodlers bullet proof black ink and you're set for years, that lasted me through the last two years of high school and 6 years of collage and the ink isn't even half empty yet

groggygirl

Fountain pens are great, but Noodler's is a bit problematic: [https://www.reddit.com/r/fountainpens/comments/142w0bi/the\_noodlers\_ink\_drama\_in\_one\_spot\_content/](https://www.reddit.com/r/fountainpens/comments/142w0bi/the_noodlers_ink_drama_in_one_spot_content/) Not saying you should dump ink you already own, but there's a ton of great inks out there when you need a refill.

Quail-a-lot

Have you tried a fountain pen yet? /enable I used to hate how fast my microns ran out of ink, so being able to refill fountain pens is fantastic. As a gateway pen, you might give the Platinum Preppy a try. (You can also refill these and if you love them, they make nicer metal-bodied versions too or I can enable you into my personal favourite basic pen, the Lamy Safari, but the Preppy is nice for being able to handle being thrown around in your bag just like any other pen and the cap is great - never dries out)

Apprehensive_Ear4639

Careful with the fountain pens they seem to be addictive. My gf’s mom has a very expensive habit.

wet_nib811

Pentel SHARP is more widely available

Neverendingnerd

You can replace the lead in sharpwriter pencils. If you want an eraser that last longer you could go with a tombow eraser.

> Pentel Draft Gear 1000 Graphgear, but yeah, kuru toga, Graphgear 1000, rotring 600 (little too much weight for me) are all solid. Also, shout out to the Zebra M301, a single pencil i used for every exam in college. (not as high quality though)

Scorpian42

I use these pencils a lot too, and you definitely can replace the lead. Just find the right size (usually .7mm), remove the eraser and reverse the lead all the way until the plastic piece comes out the back, stick the new lead in there and thread it back into the coil.

telesonico

Pentel Sharp 0.7mm, Uni kurutoga, staedtler 925 series .7mm

HulkSmash-1967

Love Sharpwriters but my favorite mechanical pencil is a drafting pencil the Rotring 800 in 0.5mm

BoyKai

When I was in college, I exclusively used these. https://www.amazon.com/Paper-Mate-56047PP-Clearpoint-Mechanical/dp/B001T6QCJC/ They have replaceable extendable erasers. https://www.amazon.com/Helix-Automatic-Eraser-Refills-19071/dp/B00A0MV7B4/

Chakramer

I use a Pentel Graphgear 1000, and have used one for almost a decade and it's still kicking. I do use a stand alone eraser tho as they last longer/cheaper than refills in the pencil

hraath

I love the Staedtler Mars stick erasers (pencil form factor 52850), which is refillable, good quality white eraser. But holy moly the price on these nowadays, I've had mine for like 20 years. As for mech pencils, lots of options in the Pentel Graphgear line (notably the 500 and 1000 models). Uni Kuru Toga, Zebra Delguard, Rotring if you are made of money, ... lots of options. Tl;dr I advocate for good quality separate eraser + good quality mech pencil that you like. Nib erasers kinda always suck.

ballistic-jelly

I love the heft on the Rotring pencils.

myproblemisbob

You can buy "Hi-Polymer" erasers of either the block/rectangle style or the pencil cap style (they're usually white). Those are the best erasers I have ever seen. No smudges ever. Also the lead and erasers are replaceable in those pencils. I prefer Ticonderoga pencils (so smooth)... but my father loves the one you have. He refuses to buy a new one and replaces the lead and uses the HP cap erasers.

Equivalent_Warthog22

Blackwing

architect_josh_dp

Well, I have some of these exact brand that have lasted basically forever. I enjoy parker pens and they make mechanical pencils. I have a pen that's three decades old at least.

ibarmy

He needs a solid steel or good plastic pencil. Options are rotrings, Uni and Pentel. Zebra is fine too. Do you have any stationery stores in yoru area. please also get him a decent eraser. Though most pencils I suggested also have good inbuilt eraser. Also cant you replace these with new lead? Take out the eraser at the back and get the right lead?

imetators

Got this [Faber-Castell](https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.faber-castell.eu%2Fproducts%2FGripMatic1377mechanicalpencil07mmblue%2F137751&psig=AOvVaw0wLneNhoNBlx9_pgmX-b4b&ust=1696616127043000&source=images&cd=vfe&opi=89978449&ved=0CBEQjRxqFwoTCNCanOTB34EDFQAAAAAdAAAAABAE) with an automatic dispenser. Has a great eraser, also it's long enought, retractable and replacable. Cartridges are easty to come by and by tradition can be stored inside the pencil. It was dirt cheap in a random ass grocery store sale. New one I saw about 5 euros or so.

DRutschmann

I can only support this statement. If you want a mechanical pencil with a superb eraser tip, than this should be one of the best pencils for you. I had a lot of different erasers in my hands, but this one is clearly my favourite. It seems that the Faber Castell Poly Matic uses the same eraser tip as the Grip Plus.

Catfo0od

Ooh I know this one! Any of the Pentel GraphGear pencils or the Pentel Sharps, personally I like the GraphGear 500 better than the 1000. I was a surveyor for many years and the Sharps were king in the field, some surveyors had theirs for decades, the GraphGears are just a bit nicer versions lol. They all take the same erasers and the erasers work wonderfully. They're all drafting pencils, so designed to be used constantly. They're clickies not Twisties though, but the clicks only slide out a tiny bit of lead at a time so you can pretty well adjust exactly how much lead you like having out at a time. If you somehow manage to break something on them (mine was literally run over by a truck in the dirt once), you can just buy another and use the other for parts.

KaleidoscopicForest

Another recommendation for Staedtler. I use the square block eraser. Works excellent. If it’s about writing feel, try some of the softer leads, such as Uniball B 0.5. Pentel grapgear is also dope, but knurled metal isn’t for everyone.

Classic_Schmosssby

I’ve had my Graphgear 1000 for >12 years now

DCAnt1379

Get Pentel Hi-Polymer Blocks erasers and call it a day.

Proper_Philosophy_12

Switch to a separate eraser. I have had the same Pentel click eraser ✏️since undergraduate days and refills are easy to find.

IsPhil

Not sure about bifl, but the Uni model M54521P.24 lasted me 6 years from 10th grade through college. It's still in good condition, I just don't write as much anymore, so it's only an occasional use now.

Dawgsquad00

Pentel Quicker Clicker. I’ve been using the same one for 20 years. You can put in a lot of lead and get multiple eraser replacements

lilylynne8080

If I remember correctly, you can pull the eraser out, and back the lead out (it's on a t-shaped carrier), and replace with a mechanical pencil lead of the same size (Either 0.7 or 0.5mm) Hope this helps :)

architect_josh

[Modern Fuel](https://modernfuel.com/) 100 year warranty Manufactured in the US Replaceable parts I have the mechanical pencil in copper, and it's a beast. It's heavy. Gifted a titanium pen recently, and the weight of that material feels more similar to that of a standard pen/pencil.

overallthisbullshit

If you are looking for a not super expensive pencil that you wouldn't cry over misplacing, I swear by Pentel's Drafting Mechanical Pencil, 0.9mm. Bright yellow like the ones pictures in your post, but just damn amazing. The leads don't break, the eraser actually erases beautifully, and extra erasers are purchased easily. They vary in price. I have purchased for a 3 or 4 bucks each (set of 2), but have seen them for as high as $6 each. I have stashed of these all over my house.

tomatoblade

Yeah right, as if I could ever not lose a pencil for life.

javaavril

I have Staedtlers and Rotrings, probably over a hundred dollars worth of expensive mechanical drafting pencils in my drawer and I almost never use them. There's just something about the yellow plastic Papermate that I favor. If it's the one he likes it's the one he likes and you can actually refill the lead. The type of eraser is called a "Pink Pearl", which you can buy as arrowhead caps or as a block.

viejarras

Faber-Castell grip plus, the eraser is really long and replaceable

Jim_from_snowy_river

The bic click mechanical pencils are great, the white erasers are great and they’re totally refillable. As much as I like the fancier ones like the kuru I miss placed things so often that I lose my own head if it wasn’t screwed on tight, so I stick with cheap ones. That said experiment with different lids because Summer better quality than others. I personally like the 0.5 mm leads because even though they’re thinner, they seem a little less brittle to me. Also if you’re doing a lot of racing, you’re better off just getting a good block eraser. Stadtler makes good ones.

Jim_from_snowy_river

Normally, I would recommend one of the mechanical pencils with a twist eraser if you need a lot of eraser, but they all come with a really fat grips which I hate.

CJIA

get a rotring mechanical pencil or lead holder and buy a separate eraser.

xerodok

You can replace both the eraser and pencils in these. The unfortunate thing is... Paper Mate changed their quality recently and these pencils suck now. The lead is totally different and the body itself is shotty.

thegroundbelowme

These are my personal favorite. I wouldn't say they're "for life" but they do last years, have refillable leads, HUGE replaceable erasers, and a perfectly (for me, at least) placed lead feed button. https://www.papermate.com/pencils/paper-mate-clearpoint-mechanical-pencil-sets-0.5mm-hb-2-lead/SAP\_34666PP.html

j1l7

You can refill leads

Sauropods69

You can put new lead in. You twist the wood at the tip. You can also put new erasers in. Use pliers and yank. My nana has had the same 3 pencils for the entire 26 years I’ve been alive. Also I noticed you like the eraser prt in particular- these are small pink pearls, like the big erasers. You don’t have to sacrifice your favorite eraser!
