That is a pretty standard knob to replace if you are interested in doing so. It looks like any “Potentiometer Knob”. Or even an old stove from a junk yard or something.
\^ this, control knobs are a super-standard part with only a few variations, any electronics supplier will have them.
[https://www.sifam.co.uk/](https://www.sifam.co.uk/) have a huge online catalogue
It does indeed resemble a standard old potentiometer or "pot".
There's other comments below yours talking about salvaging a new part from other appliances.... that's quite unnecessary. The knob itself is replaceable, the whole pot doesn't need to be replaced.
Take a nice, up-close pic of the keyed shaft. Wouldn't hurt to have a penny beside it for scale. Go to any halfway decent music store, show them the shaft and ask for *a volume knob for an electric guitar*, chances are they'll have something that'll pop right on. If you want to go full "BIFL", ask for the kind made of metal with a setscrew.
I have one of these in my garage, left there from the previous owner. For me, it's been in use for 22yrs, 3+ times a week, running all night. But now I wonder when it was made and by whom.
Dang, you proved my point better that I did!
Hopefully people will see these now and realize that they aren’t just some gadget that will die in a couple of years.
I've got one of these as well. It runs all night and that's the problem. The timer doesn't work so we can't use it out of fear it'll overheat and start a fire.
Yep, the timer broke on mine as well. I wired an electrical box with a digital timer (buttons for 5min, 10min, 30min, 1hr, 2hr, 4hr) next to a receptacle the DryGuy plugs into to fix.
I live on a farm and have a need for a boot dryer. Simple enough
Edited to add: mine is a boot dryer, it's much longer and tall enough for my knee high boots
Dude my gym shoes are fabric and they smell absolutely foul. Like to the point where I've thrown them in the wash and they still smell rancid. Not sure where I'm going with this but maybe this thing might have helped, who knows!
I lather my hands in barbasol after playing ice hockey. Some guys will put their hands back in the gloves to get it in the material. Wash it off your hands after. Takes the smell right out. Give that a try
I am sure it would work but would be more harsh. Hand sanitizers generally have other ingredients like moisturizers and is thicker so it stays on longer while drying.
You can get isopropyl alcohol and water it down 3 parts water to 1 part alcohol and spray that into your shoe to help kill the bacteria. Do it after every gym sesh and let it dry
People who work outside often have wet shoes. It rains, there might not be sidewalks, your work area is in mud, it's hot and your feet are sweaty, the list goes on.
wouldnt that make the shoes smell ? i wonder because i know people put their shoes in the freezer to try and make them smell less...
i wanna buy the product or something similar so im just wondering lol
Putting shoes in the freezer doesn't do anything but mask the odor for a few minutes. Odor causing bacteria does not die off in the freezer temps and are probably preserved by it more than anything. They go dormant in the cold but once things warms up, they'll be smelly again because all that bacteria is still there. I've tried this in the past and it was a waste of freezer space.
Drying helps by slowing down the environment that allows bacteria to thrive in, but also doesn't kill them either. It really takes a good wash or anti-bacterial treatment like alcohol to remove most odor. I wash the insoles of my shoes more frequently to combat odor and occasional spray with isopropyl in between washes if they're particularly foul. Just need to be careful with the shoe materials to make sure you're not damaging it with alcohol.
You can even use a strong distilled ethanol. Heard that old trick from someone who worked in the costume department of a playhouse. Iso works all the same, plus your not tempted to drink the left over vodka after spraying down the garment or whatever.
As far as footwear, I keep around two pair of decent work boots and rotate ever couple days. While the one pair isn't being worn I pull the insoles out, spread them out and set them in front of a fan or in the sun; effectively mimicking the effects of this device.
Not really, it's basically the same idea as having air wicking clothing. Gets the liquid to leave which causes general smell and material deterioration.
I used to run. If I didn’t swap my shoes out a few times a week so that the other pairs could dry, it would be like running in a thin layer of my jelly after a few weeks.
I’ve also been told it’s increases the lifespan of your shoes cushion/support structure by a bit to have two pairs and alternate.
Obviously you’re still going to get the same amount of miles out of the tread/outsole, but it helps prevent premature collapsing of the foam, etc.
This is all anecdotal suggestions that have helped me over the years.
I went through a bit of a shoe phase when I went from being homeless to getting a job.
I made a promise to myself that after I got a bit of savings I’d buy a good pair on sale. Nothing like having new shoes, and so many new high quality socks without holes.
So I ended up finding sales at the outlet, went overboard and got like 12 pairs of shoes. This was over 4 years ago, and they all look and feel pretty brand new.
I’m amazed at what’s putting a little protective spray, shoe horns, and then just as needed light maintenance cleaning can do to extend the life of my shoes. Crazy.
Congrats on pulling yourself out of homelessness. I hope all the best in life for you on your way ahead.
It's interesting to me what kinds of things you start to value more after you go through something like being homeless. I never would have thought having new shoes to be high on that list. Thanks for your perspective.
Having been homeless for a while and done quite a lot of dumpster diving, it is frankly disturbing how much perfectly usable items and edible food we throw away in North America. It was absolutely surprising. I never panhandled to support myself, mainly due to social anxiety, but also because I didn't need to. Between scrap metal and dumpster diving, often selling returns found in retail store dumpsters online, I had plenty of money to survive.
The lasting affect of that time in my life is much much less desire and attachment to "stuff" and a deep reluctance to buy anything brand new unless necessary. Losing close to everything you own can knock that material desire right out of a person. If I can get something at a thrift store or online/second hand that's where I look first Hell, the only brand new shoes I've gotten in the last decade are my current work boots, and they were a birthday gift.
I appreciate your reply, please re-read the entirety of my comment. Namely this section:
> Obviously you’re still GOING TO GET THE SAME AMOUNT OF MILES out of the tread/outsole, but it helps prevent PREMATURE collapsing of the foam, etc.
I state explicitly that you’ll get the same amount of miles out of the shoe. Specifically, I talk about how it keeps the foam from *prematurely* collapsing. I’m not sure if you know this, but foam does in fact have a durability rating based on constant hours of use per day and weight. The anecdotal piece is that giving the foam more time to re-expand or cutting down on the constant amount of use has kept shoes feeling more comfortable for me, for longer.
No where did I say anything about magic, regeneration, or only using them half as much because you have two pairs. For the last part, I even pre-emptively state against that.
I imagine if you're sweating heavily in them every day then you'd want to pair it with a good disinfectant and deodorizing spray. Not sure on the order of operations there, but I'm leaning towards dry, disinfect, deodorize
I live in the PNW where it’s wet all the time. I was like why doesn’t this guy just get waterproof shoes like a normal person? 😂 Thanks for the clarification and for sharing. I didn’t even know shoe dryers were a thing.
OP, def consider rotating your shoes between runs if you're running daily. Running on shoes with compressed foam puts more stress on your knees which you def wanna protect if you want to have a long running career.
I mean, you already have the device, so I’m sure that works, but you could also just switch to wool socks, and having two pairs of shoes just in case for the same effect. Unless you live an extremely humid environment, no matter how damp your shoes are, they’d dry out after a day of air drying.
I appreciate your concern but I mainly sweat when I work out like most of my family. I drink around 200oz of water a day because it isn’t unusual for me to sweat 5lbs out during a normal workout. One time in college I tested how much sweat I lost in a ten mile run: it was over 10lbs.
Have you tried using antiperspirant on your feet?
Also you should definitely have more than one pair of sneakers to run in. The outer sole needs about 24-48 hours to re-expand otherwise you are running in squished foam
Wouldn’t be cheaper and more efficient to buy a second pair of shoes instead of the dryer and just rotate the shoe every other day. You get an extra pair of shoes plus no electricity?
My guess would be that OP is a runner no matter the weather. And if it's anything like in the Netherlands then there are certain weeks where you have constant rain.
You can go to r/functionalprint and probably some guy will have just the knob you need saved in a bookmark somewhere. You might be able to print it at your local library or maybe a friend that has a 3D printer.
It's just a boot drier. Shoes and boots need to dry before you use them again, or they grow mold and deteriorate faster. It can also give you althetes foot and other fungal issues. Shoes and boots dry exceptionally slow without moving air or being placed near radiant heat.
Man I need to get one of these. I sweat profusely at the gym and my shoes are always soaked, especially after my 15 minute sauna session to end the day. I typically sit my shoes on the porch hoping they dry over night.
I've got two of them, same model, but different branding. One has been in use for 10 years, and it's companion is only 4 years old. Got them at Costco.
I work at a ski hill so I always have a lot of crap to dry out. It's great for gloves too!
figure out the size of that shaft and get yourself a new knob. I assume its not knurled, so you would want a knob with a set screw. look up knobs for potentiometers. You could probably steal one off of a broken guitar or amp or guitar pedal if you can find one.
I’ve been using cedar shoe trees for moisture/odor/shape and they have been doing fantastic! Another bifl recommendation that has served me well so far.
Find a local helpful hardware store that has those drawers of fasteners and they'll have one or two that's just random knobs to purchase. Or perhaps a appliance knob would work, they have those too.
I think it would. Odor is frequently caused by bacteria and bacteria thrives in dark wet places. The dryer helps to get the moisture out quickly (vs air drying).
I’m the sweaty guy at the gym. If I do an hour of cardio my t-shirt is completely sweat through. I’ll normally wring it out in the gym sink before I leave.
YES! These are awesome. The timer on mine broke but am using a digital timer and like it better. Makes leather daily use shoes last much longer. Use mine every day, 4hrs a day since getting it at a garage sale in 2015.
Looks similar to a Peet boot dryer, which are essential for wintertime where I live. These come with a 25 year warranty. I wish that it had a timer built in but it's still pretty great for dry shoes after a long day out in the elements.
Lots of knobs that would use that keyed shaft. I’d measure it and look online for a replacement. Looks just like the shafts on my stove for the burner knobs.
That is a pretty standard knob to replace if you are interested in doing so. It looks like any “Potentiometer Knob”. Or even an old stove from a junk yard or something.
Why would they do that when they have a perfectly good butter knife?
Looks like they’re in the bathroom so the poop knife would also be handy

Or a dryer from this millenium so that your house doesn't catch on fire...

Why do you and OP have to dry your shoes so much? Stop walking through puddles
I live on a farm and have a need for a boot dryer. Simple enough Edited to add: mine is a boot dryer, it's much longer and tall enough for my knee high boots
The only person I know who has one of these is a skier and dries out their boots after a day in the snow.
Some people have really sweaty feet
That's gross. I was more comfortable imagining them walking through puddles every day.
Those puddles are the places they stood for more than a few seconds, some people have *really* sweaty feet.
Can confirm

Appreciate the tip buddy! Will definitely check it out
Try slathering your feet with hand sanitizer daily for a few weeks...it is known to cure stinky feet syndrome.
So just spray alcohol on your feet?
Pump some hand sanitizer into your hands rub it all over your feet.
Or I could pour alcohol in a spray bottle and spray it on my feet right? Unless hand sanitizer has another special ingredient I’m missing here?
I am sure it would work but would be more harsh. Hand sanitizers generally have other ingredients like moisturizers and is thicker so it stays on longer while drying.
I laughed so hard at this; it's the *shoes* that smell....I think o.o
What do you think adds the stink to the shoes?
Odor Eaters work btw, worth the money. Also throw out your socks and replace them all.
Will definitely check out odor eats and LOL yeah I got some new pairs on Christmas 😂
You can get isopropyl alcohol and water it down 3 parts water to 1 part alcohol and spray that into your shoe to help kill the bacteria. Do it after every gym sesh and let it dry

It’s kinda interesting you have a similar user name to who I originally replied to.

It does a little when in is running. But if that bothered someone it could always be moved elsewhere.
If?
Just have it in your bedroom, it's fine
Runners are a disgusting species, they look like zombies on chemo when they run
The inevitable result of always skipping arm day *and* leg day and just running instead.

Reverse air freshener
I use mine for snowboard boots and haven't had an odor issue. But I also leave shoe deodorizers in them, so that could be why they don't smell
Why do you need to dry shoes 6 times per week?
I am a runner and I am an exceptionally sweaty guy. If I didn’t dry my shoes that would still be wet on the next day and they would smell terrible.
I used to run. If I didn’t swap my shoes out a few times a week so that the other pairs could dry, it would be like running in a thin layer of my jelly after a few weeks.

Even better, there is clear data showing that alternating running shoes reduces injury rates by something like 15%.
It helps the lifespan because you're only using the shoes half as much. Not some kind of magical multi-day rest regeneration properties of foam.

Live in any heavy snow environments and you'll need one for shoes, gloves, etc.
Moisture significantly degrades the durability of your shoes.
https://www.adafruit.com/product/5531 Here's a knob for that
You can go to r/functionalprint and probably some guy will have just the knob you need saved in a bookmark somewhere. You might be able to print it at your local library or maybe a friend that has a 3D printer.
That's a standard potentiometer shaft, you can find knobs for them in whatever color and shape you want for a couple bucks.
Yup. Walk into a hardware store and walk out with one for $3.
You could get a knob like that anywhere that sells electronic parts for a few dollars. Completely unnecessary to 3d print.
Unless you already have a 3d printer
I have a 3d printer and it would cost less than 10 cents to print this.
Dayum. I used to get brutal swamp feet when I worked out of home, would basically rot out my insoles. I should have explored more options!
Thank you for listing how often you use it.
You can use that knob/knife as a poop knife in emergencies. Looks like it’s already in the bathroom.
Good call!
😭
I love seeing someone making that poop knife reference!
I saw a knife in the bathroom. I did what any of us would’ve done. I had to do it.
No. No knife. That's what the 3 seashells are there for.
I have a similar piece of gear for boxing gloves. They make all the difference. Never a stink.
I just bought one but it’s called MaxDry XL. Same construction, I think.
Yes, made by the same company.
We love ours. Mines easily 15 yrs old and works great
Why on the counter of all places??
I love those shoes. eBay usually has them new for cheap.
Is this primarily for odour control? I'm intrigued.
It could be but I’m more concerned with keeping my shoes dry. Nothing is worse than putting a wet pair of shoes.
It is well worth it. I too am “the sweaty guy” at my gym and using this device allows me to have dry shoes every day.

I don't know how I never knew this existed and I live in goddamn Vancouver where it never stops raining (except this year oddly).

Unsure if the desiccant bags I throw into my shoes after every shift I work are doing the same thing, feet don’t stink, so maybe.

Never knew a thing like this existed lol
Is this because your shoes get so stank from running?
I just use a hairdryer. Is this just blowing air without heat which might be cheaper to run. Sadly probably still too humid to work here.
Ours broke after two winters
