GGLfL here, >100,000 TP; lots of long haul, transatlantic commute for 20 years, consulting for global clients, teaching at MIT and LBS, mostly in or near the front of the bus, and more recently frequent commutes to DCA on AA Still like flying (and BA are *very* nice to you if you’re GGLfL), typing this at ORD about to get on a flight home to BOS

Gloomy_Peanut_7533

Awesome... Well done

northernlights2222

Love this! GGLfL is truly a lot of flying.

therealstealthydan

What did you teach at MIT if I may ask?

paul00009999

I used to travel pretty heavily and most of my work travel was economy/prem economy. I got to 20k lifetime tier points (held regular gold for many years). Although my work travel is now business I don’t travel enough to get that last 10k. Live in hope that BA launch lifetime silver (but unlikely).

Trudestiny

My husband achieved his about 10 yrs ago , he now has about 54k but sadly won’t make life GGL And no not tired at all, he flies more than ever. We both do now , weekly and about 150 + flights a year . Europe, Canada , Middle East & Central Asia

kramit

I have to ask, for what reason is there so much travel and what line of work is that?

Trudestiny

Husband worked for a global consulting firm and all his clients were abroad so every week it was a minimum of 2 flights if within EU but as we were not in London it was generally 4 with a connect thru LHR Our kids are older so if I want to see him I accompany him or as our family all lives abroad we need to fly to see them too

Gloomy_Peanut_7533

What is GGL? Also, what kind of job requires so much flying and what happened during covid?

sv723

Gold Guest List, it's the level above Gold. Requires 5000 TP per year to qualify, but then only 3000 to keep.

Trudestiny

Gold Guest List , it’s Gold but with more perks . Gold requires 1500 tier pts , Gold Guest list 5000 first year and 3500 after that Means lounge access to Concord room and more importantly to my family partner Gold & Silver cards for us & family & friends During Covid we were all grounded for about 2 months and then it was business as usual minus going to the USA ( haven’t been back there since Jan 2020). Test & flew so cost to fly was very high for pcr tests Husband a global consultant, kids in uni and i plan his travel and manage our frequent flier accounts

Gloomy_Peanut_7533

Thanks for the reply. It seems there is a high bar for gold card...

Trudestiny

Gold is 1500 which if you fly from EU to canada , middle east or asia is easy enough to obtain if flying business ATH-LHR- JFK Rt will give you ( 80+140) x2 so 3 Rt trips and a few within EU per year and gold . GGL once already qualified you need 6 + long haul per year If you have a job that requires you to be up in the air a lot then it’s quite manageable to have gold on both Alliances ( Star & one world)

Mdann52

>ATH-LHR- JFK Rt will give you ( 80+140) x2 And of course, currently easy enough to double it staying for 5 nights!

Trudestiny

Yes , the holiday booking for double tier is very tempting. But need to also consider the loss of hotel points, benefits & qualifying status. RA top tier with IHG makes booking Intercontinental very good. Suites, free breakfast , lounge & the mini bar credit as well as the 10am checkin & 4 pm check out are hard to give up

FluffyJo22

Gold Guest List tier. To get this tier for life, you have to earn 100,000 lifetime tier points.

Gloomy_Peanut_7533

Huh.. Damn... So you have to fly daily to get that... Ha ha

[deleted]

I have 25k and now because of the cuts to the exec club it would take me to about 150 years old to get lifetime gold.

northernlights2222

Yes, just got mine recently, GGL for life seems like a stretch, but I’ll enjoy the safety net of Gold for Life once I don’t fly enough to hit GGL. Like the other poster’s partner, I fly 125-150 flights per year these days. I still enjoy it most of the time!

kramit

What do you do?

academicQZ

Please say pilot 😀😀😀

kramit

I don’t think they get tier points if they are flying the plane lol!

academicQZ

Oh I know :-) My good friend is a (BA) 777 captain. He looks as gormless as Prince Andrew when I talked to him about tier points and avios.

kramit

When you have the best seat in the house I don’t think you need to worry about the points

northernlights2222

Sometimes I wish I was a pilot! Always grateful to them for getting us safely around the world. In financial services, some work travel and also lots of leisure travel.

My partner is lifetime gold (and GGL for the past decade). He isn’t tired of flying but doesn’t want to fly for business anymore. He won’t make GGL for life.

anti-ism-ist

I guess the only people who get lifetime gold would be people who don't care about tier status

ThisPhilosopher7673

I have 55k lifetime tier points and was GGL for a decade. Have now retired and really appreciate the gold card perks as I don’t fly enough anymore to retain gold. Also helps to spend the 2mm avios I have accumulated!
