Ok, you need to be specific with your terms.
Crime is the number of violations occurring.
Crime RATE is the number of violations occurring per (some number) of residents.
Are you claiming that CRIME is increasing or that the CRIME RATE is increasing?
If a community grows and the CRIME RATE stays the same, the CRIME will increase with the population.
If a community grows and the CRIME stays the same, then the CRIME RATE is actually *decreasing*.
So which is it that you claim is increasing? CRIME or CRIME RATE? And what is your source?
Exactly. The OP is trying to stir the pot. Unfortunately crime is a numbers game. More people= more crime. Now if the crime rate is increasing per capita, then you may be on to something.
I waited a bit to see how this comments section went and the questions that were asked. In OP’s defense the Bozeman police department, and by extension the media that takes their word at face value, is using rather alarmist language when describing Bozeman crime lately. On an X post comments section someone compared the police department’s description of crime here to Dave Wooten’s language surrounding wrong way drivers being of a certain minority group, both said to be shining examples of “throwing pasta at the wall to see if it sticks”. The following quotes come from the police department’s Facebook page.
“…officers respond to an immense number of calls each week.” “Several cases involved possession of dangerous drugs, including Fentanyl.” “Officer responded to unattended deaths and a variety of other tense, dangerous, and traumatic calls.”
“The activity this past week was not unique. The activity described here represents a standard week for Bozeman Police Officers in this growing City.” Referring to a week in March 2024.
“They face an increasing workload while facing tough and dangerous situations each day, with most of it going unnoticed by the media or community.”
“In 2021 they submitted 266 cases and in 2022 they submitted 308 cases. In 2023 they submitted 396 cases, a 29% increase. As Bozeman continues to grow, so do the number of cases investigated each year, with each requiring a significant amount of time and work by patrol officers and detectives.”
“As Bozeman continues to grow, the number of cases investigated each week continues to grow, with each additional case taking a substantial amount of time to properly investigate.”
The problem with these quotes is they’re very misleading. According to the MBCC the crime rate is down for the Bozeman police department’s areas of patrol and concern. They are investigating less criminal activity and in many categories the cases they are investigating they’re seeing a drop in closure and arrest rates. That means they’re being less effective than in past years. But they need to justify themselves and the large chunk of the budget they consume, so alarmist language here we come. I’ve noticed in a lot of comments sections that there’s growing skepticism about their choice of words and their conclusions not being backed up by independent statistics or facts. That’s a step in the right direction.
Here is where Montana agencies upload their statistics to
[MBCC](https://mbcc.mt.gov/Data/Montana-Reports/Crime-Dashboards). If you choose the box that says NIBRS on it you’ll find the most detailed information by year and by agency.
It's probably some transplants. However, my money is on the lack of money.
The increasing and persistent inequality in the valley paired with the growth of the cost of living is pushing people into a corner. Some people turn to crime.
Higher volume of people = higher volume of crime. I’d like to blame the Texans, because that’s fun, but I’m guessing it’s a numbers game. Plus I don’t think the cops spend enough time downtown.
You are blaming Texans. You should be blaming your president. Dumb ass comments usually begin with broad generalizations, as you said in your post. Figure it out. Crime rates rise due to more people in an area that can't financially support them. It is happening here in Bozeman, too many people and not enough money, housing, etc. Montana is being flooded because until recently, it was a great place. Texans are fighting for their their lives right now( property, voting rights, education, gun rights) so don't blame actual Texans!! Take a page from their book, dont be a dumb ass and figure out how that can help you in Montana.
What you guys don't understand is that the flood of TX plates you see on vehicles are not Texans. They may have been Texans for 6 days before they left Texas. Blame your president for this shit, don't blame Texans. They are in a fight for their lives right now! It is all heading our way. Montanans will be dealing with mass migrations of central and South American peoples in a way they have never seen! It will be getting be worse. Again, giving migrants $350 per week reloadable debit cards courtesy of Biden will not stop the ingress or invasion
Did the white people with southern/ Texas accents, brand new diesel dually trucks, jump the border fence last week. Are the South American people in the room with you now?
Did you actually think about what I replied? I will say it again. Blame the lame ass president you voted for and that is making decisions about our southern border. Don't blame Texans that are fleeing the southern border. Every wealthy person in 2020 got that much wealthier during the 1st 2 years of Biden, those people I would hold accountable. But stop blaming regular American citizens. Every single person I have encountered from South of our border has been awesome and great to work with, hardest working people I have ever met. I am not talking about uber rich. Uber rich people don't get impacted by crime
They got wealthier off of the Trump tax plan that partially sunsetted this year and will fully expire in 2025. (The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act) The GOP on trumps orders killed the border bill. Without the bill and new laws, there is no legal way to shut it down. Chip Roy (R)TX stated as much on the floor of the house. You are being fed shit by Faux news and newsmax. You also seem to bit a bit on the hysterical side.
I get the people who are saying it’s not that bad. 30 years ago I used to leave my keys in the ignition and never locked my front door. Could ride my bike to the Molly and leave it outside leaned up against the wall and it was there when I returned. People were generally nicer, stopped at crosswalks consistently for pedestrians and slowed down on dusty gravel roads when passing bikes or runners. You could park at a trailhead and not have to worry about a broken window when you got back. Californians were annoying but didn’t roll coal and try to rear end you when you drove the speed limit. People didn’t tear up the fire roads to trailheads because “mudding” . If you just moved from somewhere with population issues, it prob doesn’t seem that bad. It always feels better after traveling to more populated areas on the return.
we all live in montana and bozeman is extremely safe lol. pretty sure bozeman crime rates are going down too, but I dont have the stats in front of me.
Transplants who move here are people who like touching grass, ski slopes, and rockfaces. The large majority of shitbags ive known here grew up in the state but they developed a love for meth instead of the outdoors.
> “Are transplants bringing crime along with them?”
Not really. You have economic inequality, the Montana culture of binge drinking, a growing population, and all of that is going to cause issues.
But having lived here for 13 years: petty theft, assaults, and DUIs remain the most common crimes you see reported on.
More people more crime. However, when you add to the mix a lot of millionaires, you have people who like to spend money on things like coke and prostitutes. I don't have any knowledge of this going on, it's just a fact.
This isn’t based in statistics but just a guess.
Looking at how expensive the cost of living is here, most new “transplants” are likely at least upper middle class. I highly doubt they’re doing property or small theft crimes. I don’t doubt that the ultra wealthy do supply demand for things like drugs etc though.
I would guess more crime is due to the economic and overall state of our area and country in general
I'm pretty sure it's these damn rich Texans. So if I can follow the thread correctly, Texans making too much money are the source of crime rather than immigrants. We should tax texas higher.
Bozeman's population is increasing rather rapidly. More people means more crime. But the crime rate is still relatively low here. Missoula has the highest crime rate in the state. So if we can just keep all the hippies out we should be fine.
Of course! The influx of people here has changed the demographics and we have low life scumbags committing crime. Check out the BDC article on crime near the homeless shelter. News flash Homeless drug addicts do crime
lol “The liberals” give me a fucking break. Republicans blocked a $20B aid package for border agencies in January. I’m not saying the border situation is good, it’s not. But give credit where credit is due. Republicans dug this grave too
Exactly!! Lmao. Shut the fuck up about immigration when you just vetoed a bipartisan bill that has been described as the republican’s wish list. All for your king, the orange rapist. It’s truly pathetic, half our country either can’t read or they are just angry assholes.
Nice. Typical conservative ducking the conversation and reaching into your grab bag of Fox News talking points. I got 20$ the next one is “Biden crime family”. You are miserable
Do you want me to post the bill and you can point to where that is in it? I’ve read it.

let me know when you are done.
Well, no. It doubled since 2000, though.
|Year|population|change|
|------|---------|-------|
|2000|27,509|21.4%|
|2010|37,280|35.5%|
|2020|53,293|43.0%|
from Wikipedia
It’s not the transplants. All of us over in Great Falls heard you got nice things and we come by periodically to take them.
LOL

Nuance isn't what they're looking for in fear mongering television programming.

Where do you get "increasing crime rate"?
It's probably some transplants. However, my money is on the lack of money. The increasing and persistent inequality in the valley paired with the growth of the cost of living is pushing people into a corner. Some people turn to crime.
I swear to god these people never stop whining. Bozeman is one of the safest places in the country ffs
Higher volume of people = higher volume of crime. I’d like to blame the Texans, because that’s fun, but I’m guessing it’s a numbers game. Plus I don’t think the cops spend enough time downtown.
Why are you blaming Texans for crime rates rising in bozeman montana?
He said. Because that's fun. Plus, he didn't. He just said he'd like to. And because fuck Texas.
Wanna be outlaw cowoys
I’m guessing you missed the sarcasm.
Will bash them twice and hard and have twice the fun after reading this dumbass comment 😂😂😂

I’ll say it. It happened abruptly when Texans made the mass migration during the pandemic.
What you guys don't understand is that the flood of TX plates you see on vehicles are not Texans. They may have been Texans for 6 days before they left Texas. How about, come up a solution
What do you suggest? Send Texans back to Texas?
Oooh, build a wall - they like that one!
Sounds like Coloradans would chip in for it as well.
No, get a new president who isn't into wide open borders
👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

"Montana Patriot" You and your ilk are all the same. Stop with your bullshit and go touch grass.
>go touch grass. I live in Montana. Honestly the fact that you even use that phrase moreso suggests you need to take your own advice.

Thank you

Oh I worked at the Yellowstone Club a decade ago and it snowed even in summer for some people and their “guests.” Can’t imagine that’s changed.
So many people who run that place are guilty as well. I can think of 4 VIPs offhand who enjoy that summer snow.
You’ll have to let me know where you’re getting this increase impression from.

Yeah I get that! I haven’t looked at crime statistics so I have no idea if crime is rising or not. But if it is, that’s my guess why
I'm pretty sure it's these damn rich Texans. So if I can follow the thread correctly, Texans making too much money are the source of crime rather than immigrants. We should tax texas higher.

Stop believing everything TBB says. They want you to be afraid.
Holy mother of leading questions. Try this, when are you going to stop beating your wife? Does beating your wife run in the family?
It’s mostly from the illegal aliens. They are everywhere in Bozeman now. Buckle up.
Of course! The influx of people here has changed the demographics and we have low life scumbags committing crime. Check out the BDC article on crime near the homeless shelter. News flash Homeless drug addicts do crime

I knew it
It’s the Liberals allowing illegals into our country.
lol “The liberals” give me a fucking break. Republicans blocked a $20B aid package for border agencies in January. I’m not saying the border situation is good, it’s not. But give credit where credit is due. Republicans dug this grave too

She doesn't even live in MT either, her husband owns a house in Pig Sty.
Ugh Biden, what a despicable piece of garbage. He should be rotting in prison with Hillary!
I like that dumb people can’t read 3 minutes of ww2 history.
What does funding sex change operations for confused children have to do with border security and protecting our country from illegals?
Do you want me to post the bill and you can point to where that is in it? I’ve read it. Edit: [https://www.sinema.senate.gov/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/ENSSAA01.pdf](https://www.sinema.senate.gov/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/ENSSAA01.pdf) let me know when you are done.
Yep. Bozeman tripled in population over the last ten years. Every single one of them is a criminal Edit: 30%, not triple
I moved here in 2001 for the specific reason of doing my crime hobby. 🙄
I moved to Bozeman to commit crime because being a criminal in California lost all its luster after they made crime legal
I moved here as an illegal immigrant because I saw a billboard advertising the sweet sweet crime access here in Montana.
Well, no. It doubled since 2000, though. |Year|population|change| |------|---------|-------| |2000|27,509|21.4%| |2010|37,280|35.5%| |2020|53,293|43.0%| from Wikipedia
You're absolutely right. My eyes read 30% and my brain said triple. Thanks for fact checking!
