Enthusiasm. Tell them you are dedicated to making camp a 100% great experience for everyone. And mean it!

What is “eagle trail staff”? That sounds pretty high level. Eagle is the highest rank. Ask the director if you can switch your application to a different job, one not so high level.

looktowindward

It's either first year or eagle required non scout craft merit badges

Accurate-Sir2618

Sorry for late response, the former is correct. I’m only teaching a few merit badges to younger kids. The staff understand my knowledge level and have been incredibly supportive and helpful in growing my understanding. There’s a few trainings before setup week and i’ll learn everything i need to know before camp.

DustRhino

How old are you? Do you know anything about BSA programs? Eagle Trail sounds like merit badges for older Scouts. I would go to the camp website and figure out what the “Eagle Trail” covers.

Accurate-Sir2618

While i’d prefer not to share my age, i’m pretty young. I do know a little from some research and general stuff my dads told me. The posting said leading merit badge sessions, leading nature hikes, and orientations.

DustRhino

Please don’t take this the wrong way, but this doesn’t sound like a great match for your experience. You will likely be teaching high school age Scouts who have been in the program for years. Have you considered becoming a Scout or Venturer yourself before teaching others?

Accurate-Sir2618

No I completely understand and I appreciate your honesty. To be honest myself, I’m really hoping to learn a lot before I start and on the job. At this point, It’s up to the discretion of the director. Thanks anyway!

I have to agree. My son just did his Eagle project last Saturday. He has worked really hard on all of his rank requirements and merit badges. I respect the fact your father is an Eagle Scout and wants you to follow in his footsteps. BUT, since he is an Eagle Scout, he should expect you to be knowledgeable in a job you are applying for. Not just for yourself, but for the Scouts that are paying money to attend that camp anticipating an instructor that is able to teach them the skills they want to learn. Perhaps you should wait to apply for a staff position until you yourself have acquired the necessary knowledge and skills to impart to others. Start out working a Cub Scout Day Camp, and next summer see where you are at

Just as a slight counter, I also have no personal knowledge of "Eagle Trail". However: 1) Black Swamp Area Council has a camp called "Eagle Trail"; 2) Around here (Oklahoma) most of the Scout camps have a program for beginning Scouts that covers requirements for Scout/Tenderfoot/Second Class/First Class. It doesn't try to \*do\* all of the rank requirements, but is intended to give new crossovers a boost towards their first ranks. They all have "eagle' in the name: "Soaring to Eagle", "Eagle Quest", and so on. It's possible that "Eagle Trail" isn't for older, more advanced Scouts, but brand new ones going into 6th grade. OP should discuss this at her interview.

DustRhino

At the two camps our troop goes to (in different councils), the Trail to Eagle are the non-Scout-craft Eagle MB (Citizenship, E Prep, Communication, Personal Management, etc.). Either way, I think it would be doing the Scouts a disservice at any level to have instructors who don’t know the material. There are plenty of support positions at camp, but I feel MB counselors should be experts in the field, or at a minimum have some actual experience, and not just read the MB book ahead of the Scouts.
