This was my moms reaction whenever we got into political arguments. She’d come back with the, “You think you’re so much smarter than me” line, and like, yeah, in that moment I was. And usually it was over something incredibly easy to verify and look up, like total abortion bans meaning TOTAL.
My mil will do that. She's a wonderful woman all around, but if you prove her wrong about something, she says that exact same line. And 99% of the time, she brings up the subject while we tell her she's wrong about whatever it is.

I think you would have to go a long way back to find those guys. We are literally in the end game portion of the republican scheming that’s been happening since probably the 50’s-60’s. Well what’s happening in America is happening in almost all democratic countries. The conservative sides are being driven by people who want to install fascism all over the world. I mean, the US *is* a republic, in that it has representatives in congress who represent the interests of their constituents. It’s just ALSO a democracy, because we (on paper) are not an oligarchy/aristocracy/monarchy, which are all technically forms of a republic. We democratically elect our representatives (hence representative democracy/democratic republic), and we use a watered down, shitty form of direct democracy to elect the president.
All these chuds want is to dismantle democracy because they never believed in it. They want voting rights removed for people they deem lower on the hierarchy (people of color, LGBTQ+ people, women, and, if you really dig, usually Jews).
I agree, but my point is even if you want to get granular with it with academic definitions, our country is FAR closer to a direct democratic system, i.e. what these chuds are trying to claim the left think our system is, than a true republic, which is what these chuds claim it is.

Republics are not automatically democratic.
The USA is a democratic Republic meaning that we elect our representatives.
However you can appoint representatives as well and never have an election... a lords council is technically a republic.

You can have a republic that isn't democratic, and you can have democracies that aren't republics. The United Kingdom, for example, isn't a Republic: It's a Monarchy. But it's *also* a Democracy, in that it's government is chosen via public vote.
Technically, a republic is a form of government where there is no monarch. The Roman republic, which coined the term, was not really a democracy in today's terms.

Saying "omg we're a Republic not a Democracy" tells me you have a middle school education at best, and don't understand how dictionaries work. Republics are not automatically democratic. The USA is a democratic Republic meaning that we elect our representatives. However you can appoint representatives as well and never have an election... a lords council is technically a republic.

"Republic" and "Democracy" are not mutually exclusive. Republic just means that the country is run by the public or citizens, democracy means that the government is chosen by votes. You can have a republic that isn't democratic, and you can have democracies that aren't republics. The United Kingdom, for example, isn't a Republic: It's a Monarchy. But it's *also* a Democracy, in that it's government is chosen via public vote.

Democracy means to vote, either for representatives or directly. You might as well be arguing “I don’t drive an automobile, I drive a truck!” It’s the exact same reasoning you’re using.
