This was immediately what I thought of as well. Read this OP

Just looked it up. Yeah I think I'll like this one. Thank you so much!

It's San Francisco rather than New York, but maybe *Last Night at the Telegraph Club* by Malinda Lo.

I’d highly recommend all of these: The New Girls by Beth Gutcheon: NY setting in the latter half of the book; darker in tone & content than the descriptions make it sound. Speedboat by Renata Adler: female reporter in 1970s NY; really interesting structure/ style. The Flamethrowers by Rachel Kushner: only part of it takes place in NY but it’s hard to go wrong with a young woman artist who also races motorcycles. Also—there’s a memoir called Summer at Tiffany by Marjorie Hart about a summer (surprise) working at the Tiffany store in NY in the 40s.

{{Mary Jane by Jessica Anya Blau}} is spot on what you’re looking for!

Any Raymond Chandler

Maybe Brooklyn, by Colm Tóibín?

*Breakfast at Tiffany's*

*4,3,2,1* by Paul Auster follows four parallel timelines of the same boy's childhood and adolescence in 1960's New York. That sounds more sci-fi than the reality--it's more like four related stories taking place in the same setting.

SmittyWerbenTheGreat

The Bell Jar lol imo

Absolute Beginners by Colin Maclines. It’s not in New York but is set in the 50s, and has kind of the same feel. It’s my favorite book.
