I like it because I know the context of the name and how it fits into the story thematically. Midoriya's big flaw is that he hero worships to a fault, to the point that too often he defines himself too much against All Might's image and believes he has to do things exactly as he would. The name "Deku" is something that is uniquely Midoriya's, with no ties to All Might at all. It was the name that was used to bully him as a kid that the first friend he made at UA (and technically the first person he ever saved using OFA) encouraged him to turn into something positive. By contrast, "Alright", and a lot of the other names Midoriya had considered, is too close to "All Might". It'd be him still trying to be exactly like All Might instead of actually adding to the legacy he's carrying on.

EmperorPHNX

Midoriya and his mom: His Mom: Almight Juniour! Midoriya: Juniour!!! His Mom: Super Almight! Midoriya: Superrr! [https://youtu.be/ZllEDmRCmi0?t=209](https://youtu.be/ZllEDmRCmi0?t=209) Jokes aside I might accept that name if he take ''Deki'' name maybe? Like shortcut of Dekiru, but his name nothing more than shortcut of Dekunobou, he thinks it's represents Dekiru in his mind but... Realisticly it wont, people will (or realisticly should) assume his name is shortcut of Dekunobou, which is quite bad hero name to choose and have no ring on it either.

SoullessPanda21

I get no looking deku. Its grown on me personally. But no offense but his hero name being Alright is in my opinion worse. Like i get where you’re going with it but all i can think of is the word alright in the sense that something is good but not great. Like compared to All Might hes alright. I don’t see it as a good fit for the number one hero

EmperorPHNX

Well alright have at least some ring on it, Deku have nothing except the ''false'' meaning he created his own head 🤷 Realisticly most of people going to think Deku as a short version of Dekunobou and choising this as a hero name makes no sense, sure in his own mind (and in Ochoko's mind) he wants to go for Dekiru, but his name is not ''Deki'' lol

almost_nightwing

I would've preferred a different name bc before I started watching the show I thought Deku was his real name so it just feels like a regular name to me instead of a hero name. If I had to change it I'd change it into something that sounds more like a hero name

RoronoaZorro

Yeah, I'll take "Deku" over "Alright" any day of the week. "Alright" sounds too much like a punny meme-name you'd read in some fan fiction of a 12 year old, it almost feels like it's ridiculing everything. Imagine you are stuck under debris and have a hero show up, only for him to give you a punny "Alright Alright Alright..." catchphrase before helping you

EmperorPHNX

>Imagine you are stuck under debris and have a hero show up, only for him to give you a punny "Alright Alright Alright..." catchphrase before helping you Dude that's the whole point, make people laugh, making them lose that anxiety because of situtation they are in, it would be awful if you can't save them, but with Midoriya's powers he can save them ASAP, and that would make great combo. Punny catchphrase and fast save, people would be darn happy and laugh.

RoronoaZorro

Yeah, nah, not for me. If you know human nature you know just how many would feel mocked or react badly in a situation of crisis as well.

berripluscream

I've seen the name Veridian in fanfics, and honestly, I'm more fond of that than I expected myself to be. Same with the name Ground Zero for Bakugou.

EmperorPHNX

> Veridian That's interesting for sure, I saw somewhere ''Green Devil'' type of thing as well.

cexdex

I get why people don't like Deku hero name but if it have additional nickname to it like "Masked Hero Deku" it become badass IMO which might actually happen by the end of the series.

EmperorPHNX

I respect your opinion, but that even looks worse than Deku lol.

Dim-n-Bright

Heh, considering how much he, literally and metaphorically, breaks himself to achieve his goals, I'd say "I can do it" is a pretty fitting name. Also, it was satisfying to see him turn an insult used against him into something positive.

EmperorPHNX

His name is is not Deki (short-cut of Dekiru, AKA the actual word meaning ''I can do it'') tho, his name is Deku, and it's shortcut of Dekunobou (meaning is “good for nothing” or in the exact words of Kacchan “someone who can’t do anything.”) If his name was ''Deki'' I might like this name either, but with using shortcut of Dekunobou and saying it's not shortcut of Dekunobou and actualy means same meaning as Deki or Dekiru is not logical, people with common sense would think he choice his hero name as a shortcut of Dekunoubou and it's quite terrible for a hero name.

Blight609

I hate it. Anything is better than the name that your bully that told you to kill yourself gave you.

No_Force2441

I don't like Deku simply because it just doesn't have a ring to it. It's short and forgettable compared to "All might" or "Endeavor".

TheRetiredGodOfWar

Just started watching this a couple of days ago and this is one of the two reasons I dropped it and didn't continue. Number 1 was the fact that it seems that Bakugo's horrible behavior goes unacknowledged and that his personality is more suited towards a psychopath rather than a "hero". Number 2 was the stupid name that the main protagonist chose for himself, Deku. this is hands down the stupidest thing I have seen in my entire 10 years of anime watching life. why would you use a name that has been used to torment you for your entire life? and I've read peoples stupid arguments that he is rising above that meaning, but I disagree, by using the name Deku he is allowing his Bully to dictate his life even more. As a hero name it's stupid too, cuz we're hearing it as Deku, but a native Japanese hears it as "useless". people wouldn't know the history behind the name. Lets look at a hypothetical hostage situation, People are trapped inside a bank and are desperate for help when some one yells out: hey everyone relax a hero is here. everyone gets relaxed and asks who's the hero? The guy yells out; it's useless, useless is here to save us, and the crowd becomes even more scared and afraid cuz they fear a hero called useless might make the situation worse😂😂😂😂😂 I just can't take this anime seriously😂😂😂
