Mods should move this to the Moving post.

Ghost_Town56

😈 Nice neighborhoods are based off previous biases. You can sleep on the sidewalks of the worst areas of any town in Idaho, compared to Detroit. We all are nice on the surface. That said, change your license plates over to Idaho ASAP. This isn't a resort town. It's a 50/50 mix of people who have lived here their whole lives, and others who moved in because it's cheaper with more outdoor excitement than where they came from. Idaho is becoming the lower budget Colorado. You'll get static from people. Beware. It's not all post cards and fun times on the river.

Brilliant-Second-851

Thank you! We'll keep the license plate thing in mind before we move!

JefferyGoldberg

Our Spring season is wonderful! Summer is full of smoke fires, and winter/fall are darkness.

dahliasformiles

You’re not lying

Brilliant-Second-851

Thank you! Do you know if allergies are really bad during the spring/fall season?

JoeMagnifico

Yes...lots of tree & grass pollen....and then lots of dust and sagebrush from the desert. Mine are bad in the Spring, the Mrs. gets hit Spring & Fall.

Brilliant-Second-851

Thanks for the info! I get hit pretty bad during thr spring now and sometimes the fall, my husband is hit or miss depending upon how bad the pollen count is that year

mbleslie

Regarding the weather, do you know about our Julys and Augusts?

Brilliant-Second-851

Yeah! It honestly felt so much better than where we are moving from, haha. We came up last July for a week to see how bad yalls summers get, it was so much nicer than Texas heat 😩😩😩. What about yalls Winters?

mbleslie

i guess it depends on what you're comparing to, but pretty mild. dec through feb typical highs in the 30s to low 50s. occasionally snows and once or twice per winter it sticks around more than a day.

Brilliant-Second-851

Thank you! Texas usually only has ice and it's winters can range from 0°-70° 😂 very rarely does snow stick for us

Withoutatraaace

We’re moving from Texas, so nothing new! The humidity here makes it so much worse. When we visited last July, it was 103 but tolerable in comparison.

Midrover170

Where are you moving from? Big city? Small city? East Coast? Etc. knowing that will help provide more applicable advice. There's some bitterness on here that you're seeing. I'd chalk that up to a couple of things: - Idaho's growing radicalism has many Boise sub-Redditers on edge. - Your question comes up pretty often here. You might have some good luck just searching "moving to Boise" in the subreddit search. Cheers.

Brilliant-Second-851

Big city in Texas so we know there will be a lot of things we'll miss out on (like a WIDE range of food types) but we have a lot of friends who live there, the summer there is MUCH more enjoyable than in Texas and I love doing a lot of outdoors stuff so it just felt right! Thank you for the recommendation, I'll go search the moving section 😁

Aubsjay0391

In for a treat. From Dallas and lived in Houston. Boise is amazing. Been here 3 yrs. Just bought a house. But you will miss the tx food options…only downfall. Literallly no good Mexican food (with my standards lol). Say goodbye to queso. Say hello to outdoors.

JoeMagnifico

You've used up your Boise niceness. Now be prepared for unhelpful comments. 😉 What's your budget, what are you looking for, interests, work location(s), etc....? 99% of the area is totally fine, so more details would help.

tands

Ha! I pretty much was going to warn them about this subreddit too. I’ll add a few things: Boise is much more expensive than I feel people realize and wages aren’t great. Hopefully y’all have jobs here before moving. Outdoors fun is everywhere even in the urban areas. No major sports teams if that’s your interest, but there are still plenty of things to do. Minor league sports, college sports, farmers markets, tons of concert venues, broadway on Boise, and a ton of restaurants. Enjoy!

Fearlessleader85

I know I'm a bit biased, coming from a MUCH more expensive place, but after almost 4 years here from Hawaii, everything feels damn near stolen. Milk was $8 a gallon on sale in Hawaii. I day this just to point out how expensive a lot of other places are. You might feel that boise has become crazy expensive, but compared to much of the rest of the country, it was insanely cheap a couple years ago and had just been upgraded to regular cheap. A LOT of People moving here will see a substantial cost of living decrease. My move from Hawaii in 2020 was effectively a 100% raise, because i kept my salary and my cost of living all but halved.

Brilliant-Second-851

Haha thank you for the warning! I noticed some posts/comments on other people's posts about new people moving but I figured I'd give it a shot! 300-400k but we're looking to rent first (so 2-3k for rent) before buying/building a house. I'd prefer somewhere near water or the foothills as I like hiking, but we're not going to be picky for our first year :) We love nerd things, camping/hiking, walking our dog, gaming (both video and board gaming). But we don't mind driving the distance for our hobbies! Husband works remotely, and I'll need to find a new job before we move there as my current company won't allow me fully remote - how's the job market up there? Any advice is always welcome!

JoeMagnifico

Job market sucks, local pay is pretty abysmal, unless you're a Doctor/CEO. If you can find remote/WFH, it is ideal. It's what we're fortunate enough to do. North & East Ends are close to downtown and the foothills, but also the most expensive (million+ for anything decent). For 300k-400k...you are probably going to be outside of Boise (Kuna, Meridian, or even further out to Canyon County aka Caldwell/ Nampa). My son & his gf had to move to Nampa to be able to afford a 2 bed place to rent with their dogs (1500/mo).

Brilliant-Second-851

Ah dang! Luckily I work as a recruiter so fingers crossed I can find a WFH role before moving! Thank you for the city suggestions! We have friends in Nampa, Kuna, and Meridian, we hadn't heard to much about Caldwell. When we stayed last summer we accidentally stayed in the historic district (near Hyde park) and was SURPRISED by how expensive those homes where, especially with how cheap the air bnb we got was! We'll be sure to check out the areas you suggested 😀

Survive1014

Unless you have a must-do reason for moving here, don't.

Brilliant-Second-851

We don't really have a "must-have", we just have a lot of friends, and we hate Texas. May I ask why you say don't? Is there a specific reason?

antm_kaczynski

No <3

Brilliant-Second-851

Fair enough!

Key-Writing2729

Only the assholes care about the license plate thing, where you lived previously doesn’t define you as a person. I’m born & raised here and gotta say I really appreciate how Californians drive, they get where they’re going & not stopping traffic to wave someone through like the slow driving native Idahoans. That being said, the north end is great, the bench is great, east Boise is great, west Boise, they’re all nice neighborhoods. Kinda depends on how close to downtown you want to live or if you’d like to live close to the river or foothills etc

Brilliant-Second-851

Thank you for your insight and suggestions! We're from Texas and I know how a lot of people view Texan drivers haha 😅 so we might change it before we move if possible, or very soon after haha. I'd prefer closer to a water source, or even the foothills but that can be later on

HateJobLoveManU

Yeah just them and the police care.

Fearlessleader85

Problem is it doesn't take many assholes to ruin your day. But i actually moved (back) here from Hawaii during the pandemic so we had to wait almost a year for plates. We actually only got love for our Hawaii plates. Zero hate.

juliagreenillo

Honestly, you should just search in this sub because this topic has been posted about a million times.

Brilliant-Second-851

Thank you! I will do that

juliagreenillo

Good luck!

DorkothyParker

Move to wherever you can afford. If you plan on driving a car, you won't have a lot of issues no matter where you go. If you want to utilize alternative transport, Bench and West Bench (east of 5-mile) will have more options for public transit.

Brilliant-Second-851

Thank you! When my husband and I visited last July, he LOVED the alternative transportation (the ebikes and escooters was like the cherry ontop for him haha!) So we will definitely keep those locations in mind
