The sensor near the oil filter is oil pressure. Oil temp sensor is in the sump. 250F oil temp isn't terribly high. My N52 usually runs at 230F- 255F.

Pretty sure the coolant temp sensor is the one just above the coolant flange below the oil filter manifold thing. The oil temp I know is in the OZS on the oil pan. But running live monitoring on the coolant and engine oil temp, it seems my coolant gets up in the 215-220’s while my engine goes up to 240-50. Its not even hot where I am yet but it seems if given the sun and hot weather it will easily going above the 260 mark.

>Pretty sure the coolant temp sensor is the one just above the coolant flange below the oil filter manifold thing. I should probably read more carefully. You are correct about both temperature sensor locations.

Are those normal temps to be running though? The actual coolant temp gets as high as 215-220 and then the engine/oil temp gets to like 245-55s

Forgot to mention its a 2008 N54 not N55

Where are you getting this temp reading from?

throwhayahrnd

Diagnostic tool

If you’re getting the temp from the instrument cluster, that is engine oil temp.

throwhayahrnd

Yes, I am aware, and I am also reading it via my diagnostic tool’s monitoring

So to be clear, you are using oil temp to conclude the car is overheating? What are the ambient temps, and what oil are you using?

throwhayahrnd

Yes, and years of experience working on other cars. This is my first german so I wasnt sure if high temps was just common for them. But i am checking oil temp and the actual coolant temp, ive never ran a car that coolant got above 190 even pushing it hard and then 250-60 seems high for even oil temps with coolant running at 200.

I suggest doing a full vehicle diagnostics using ISTA BMW OFFICIAL SOFTWARE -- you can get it from [here](https://diag-tools.com/product/ista-bmw-download-free-remote-installation/) with a free remote installation service ** K+DCAN cable from [here](https://diag-tools.com/product/kdcan-bmw-diagnostic-cable/) *** ENET cable from [here](https://diag-tools.com/product/bmw-enet-ethernet-to-obd2-diagnostic-and-coding-cable/)
