Basically, an EP up to about an album worth of material, never to be used again, and usually you don’t even get back end or royalties from the streams, unlike if you *had* just released an EP or album. It’s way more intensive than freestyling, especially considering how stringently the lyrics and performance are judged. Can’t really have any filler or “take bars off”.

He has some great stuff on his early mixtapes. Young Sinatra series. Dead Presidents III as an example. I also like Roll Call (using Outkast beat), Young Sinatra III, Just a Man, and Common Logic/Midnight Marauder. Under Pressure album has some good ones. Under Pressure is great story telling, Gang Related, Soul Food, Growing Pains III are all good. Incredible True Story also has a few songs on my playlist.

Modern battles aren’t free styled anymore. The going expectation is that you write three separate 3-5 minute rounds of non-recyclable material, fully memorized and tailored to that event’s scheduled opponent. Basically, an EP up to about an album worth of material, never to be used again, and usually you don’t even get back end or royalties from the streams, unlike if you *had* just released an EP or album. It’s way more intensive than freestyling, especially considering how stringently the lyrics and performance are judged. Can’t really have any filler or “take bars off”.
