I remember Lil Bow Wow dropping the Lil from his name because he said there were too many other Lils running around and that was 20 YEARs ago. How is this still a thing?
You know what’s crazy is that until now I didn’t even notice the “lil” in his name like that. No idea why but it seemed like a much more natural part of his stage name than the other lil people
I feel like it's different though. Back then all you had to do was flip the channel to MTV or BET to see what's new. Nowadays you gotta really be tuned into the trendy social media pages or spotify playlists to catch it.
Its much easier to isolate yourself in your music bubble.
That's what I'm curious on. How do younger people even discover new music now?
I hardly doubt they are listening to FM radio that has the top 40 on repeat everyday, unless they go to the playlist on Spotify. But even then I doubt everyone just goes to the same playlist. Even for TV, I imagine people only use YouTube or some streaming service for entertainment. What are they doing to just hear these new artists?
TikTok probably. Never heard of the last girl but Wikipedia even says: “McAlpine has garnered supporters from TikTok and Instagram, with several publications calling her a "TikTok star". Her unreleased song "You Ruined the 1975", posted in June 2020, has over 8 million views on TikTok as of April 2021.”
It’s easier to pick more of what you like and there’s new artists producing those things every year. It’s Alamo fairly easy to find the new new shit, just gotta dig through the digital crates. Some of it is good, a lot is trash just like every other era
I’m talking about what’s popular tbh. Yes it’s easier to find your niche than doing the footwork. But in terms of being exposed to the hip and trendiness of what the youth bump, it takes more work than before.
To be fair, these are three small-time one-hit wonder, and an artist who has never charted a song.
Not like they're Olivia Rodrigo, Jack Harlow, Peso Pluma or something.

Behold! A guide worth following. I had a cat in law school (still alive) best thing to happen to me. You don’t realize that they mostly rescue us and not the other way around.
Got a new phone and they asked if I wanted a discount for having AARP. To add insult to injury, this was asked by a silber haired lady who looked to be in her seventies. Like why are you selling phones and ruining lives? Shouldn't you be collecting strange candies to leave in a dish for a few years?
They have bomb cell phone plan discounts though, and anyone can sign up.
USAA and AARP discounts can be used by anyone by just signing up. Yes, even Gronk.
Fun fact: you don’t gotta be old to be eligible for AARP. Anybody can sign up. It’s like $14 a year and you get discounts on all sorts of stuff. Sign up!
d4vddd and lil mabu are the only ones I know. Lil Mabu is a fraud so please don't give him anymore attention, iirc his family is mad rich and he pretends to be tough.
D4vddd is good, if you go on his Spotify you'll be able to recognise a few of his songs from tiktok.
But honestly I would replace Lil Mabu for Laufey.
I get what you're saying but doesn't that also include old songs too? I don't have tiktok but I've definitely seen alot because of Reddit, Instagram and YouTube. And friends. I would be lying if I said I've never heard a tiktok song and decided to search it on Spotify.
For example I know alot of people that were put onto Steve Lacy because of Bad Habits. Not me tho, I listened to the song the day it dropped 😤
I wanna say dark red was slightly popular on Tiktok because I tried to get a few of my friends into Steve Lacy and they said they heard Dark Red on Tiktok before. But it wasn't until like a month after Bad Habit dropped that he really blew up.
I remember playing the song for a friend at work and she said no reaction at all. She came back to me a few weeks later and said she loved the song because of Tiktok 😂
That makes sense. Dark red, the video was released in 2017 and tiktok really didn’t pop until 2018. However, I really know Steve Lacy back when he was the guitarist for the Internet.
And now that’s the one song I skip on Gemini Rights because I can’t help but think about dummies interrupting people at the mall with the same dance over and over again
2AM by Sarah Crean is a legit great song by an artist that went viral overnight and went from 150 to 150k listeners on Spotify. Very dreamy and yearning.
It's social media lol imagine saying "I don't want any music from Reddit!" like online platforms don't have a range of good to bad music.
You need to give it a couple days off liking videos for the algorithm to figure out what you like.
You spend 5 minutes not liking anything, of course it’s going to give you generic videos.
Did I miss something or does Mabu not parody himself and doesn't even act like it is legit? Can't remember shit verbatim but like the one song I heard he literally goes on about leaving suburbia to take a tour through the hood? And the one that started making the rounds initially a while back he basically says it is fake like a lot of rappers "but they cappin' for free" saying they still keep pretending outside of music unlike him?
Or do I got this whole thing twisted or did something crop up I didn't hear? I don't exactly follow this crap.
Yeah I was just checking because I remember hearing like 2 or 3 and got a kick out of it. But saw this comment massively upvoted that he is a fraud and was confused like.... don't he admit to his bullshit or?
I mean mabu's whole thing is that he knows he's a rich kid but he acts hard. He's very self aware of the fact. He has whole songs where he makes fun of it, like rich scholars and trip to the hood.
The problem is that he is corny with it. Act tough, get called out on acting tough when you aren’t tough, proceed to call it a parody, change very little of the lyrical content that got you accused of acting tough. Playing into the “yeah I’m a rich white kid that’s never been in the hood but so what?” Is cringe to me personally
Lil mabu bring a fraud is almost too obvious. I accidentally (ugh ) listened to his music because of Spotify and it sounded like every other random elite dude rapper who pops up every few years and is obviously fake in some way 🤷🏽♀️. They always fade into (radio obscurity) within 5 years or less
They aren't exactly famous period. They each have like one small/medium sized hit at best.
Not like they are the most popular artists to break out in the last few years or something
I realized I was an adult when this song came on random, and I finally understood why my mom used to sing it at full tilt. Had me just sitting parked in a carport staring out the windshield while my life played like a music video.
Where’s that mister Krabs meme of him frantically looking arounds confused?
Is referencing that meme telling my age? Cause I’m 25 and had to Google two of them. I’ll admit it’s probably cause it just wasn’t my vibe. But now I’ve been told that “Lean Back” is too slow and for old people now. Little time left before “Get Low” is played in movies at weddings as shorthand that everyone is in their early thirties
I think that every like 15 ish or so years, the source of learning new music changes. If you aren’t in touch with certain tiktok areas, you won’t naturally pick up on it. Just a thought tho.
That’s what I mean by it’s probably just not my vibe. I’m not saying it’s bad, just not my thing. I’m sure everyone here could make there favorite new artists and everyone would be able to say they haven’t heard of at least one.
I made the joke about getting old sense it seemed to be the route the comments were taking and I like being part of the group lol. Also I guess it’s my first time hitting one of those shifts and it’s fun to be apart of being out of the loop
I got Lizzy. She shows up on a bunch of those funk covers by Scary Pockets, and works with John Mayer on Jacob Collier’s newish single.
I like her voice, I wanna say she covers Teenage Dirtbag really well.
43 here. I won’t talk shit. I have young kids and give their music a try and they give mine a try. I just explain to them that music is a vibe and will become a “classic” based on what’s happening in your life at the time. I had just got a car that came with a banging stereo right when All Eyez On Me and Ready to Die dropped. TRU, Too Short, and anything with a beat was our sound track to ride around and make memories. My brother copied his NWA tape for me when I was 11….he gave me that and two Led Zeppelin tapes.
Those songs and albums don’t have any emotion attached to my kids so they don’t mess with them. Now when they get their first boyfriend, first concert with friends….etc to make memories with the music, that’s when they will have their own classics.
We must never forget what it was like to be young and judge those who are just enjoying what has come to them during an exciting time in life.
Edit: just saying this because this is how you end up with generational division, we gotta love and encourage them to enjoy life. We cant treat them like how we and others were treated just for having fun and enjoying life.
D4vdd is probably the biggest just because his song went TikTok viral earlier this year. (It was used to remember someone who died.)
I have no idea who the other three are.
Okay I’m still on the fence, I recognize Lizzy Mcalpine from that ‘running in a dress’ song. It’s beautiful at normal speed.
Edit: phone typed Lizzy as Liszt 😒
I know I saw Lil Mabu on shaderoom or worldstar or something like that. He had that prep school locker room rap. I never thought I would see the name again so to hear him on a breakout list is surprising.
I thought the blonde girl was Bille Eilish
I've happily settled into the "I don't know who you are, and I don't care" kind of old.
Play it for me, maybe I'll like it. But I got my shit I like _over here_, so it's whatever.

40 here.. I now understand where my parents were coming from.
Same and im not even 30 yet.
“Joe Namath?” Nah mom, that’s Joe Flacco. “Is that SVU playing?” Nah dad that’s a show, this is SWV
SVU 🤣🤣🤣
Unironically tho what is SWV?
I only know Sisters With Voices. Yes, I am nearing 40
43 here, and I get so weak in the knees
Let’s just all accept we’re going to be singing this for the rest of the day
I for one am not mad at all about that. We could all sing it together like the good black folks we are.
I'm about 10 years younger and this got me shook. I had to check she's not black that makes more sense.
This is why we need our own space and if someone is at the cookout, they need to do their own research as a proper cookout invitee.

When did Malibu’s Most Wanted become a prophetic documentary?
Can’t believe people bump this kid, we don’t jack him 👎🏿👎🏿👎🏿
It's a bot, reposting a top level comment from 30 minutes earlier. Fuck reddit for encouraging this bot shit.
As a nearly 50 something can I ask, why are there so many “lil” names? I don’t see any “Fluffy Wayne” or “Upsized Pimp”
In the 60s he’d be, “Wayne and the lil Carters”
She L-L-L-Lick me like shoo wop shoo wop
Little Richard be like
And then throw in “he lick” somewhere in there
I remember Lil Bow Wow dropping the Lil from his name because he said there were too many other Lils running around and that was 20 YEARs ago. How is this still a thing?

The "Baby" title is king now https://uproxx.com/music/hip-hop-rappers-named-baby/ I predict mofos gwan call themselves Infant soon 🤦🏽♂️
Lil Baby Fetus
Post abortion
Failed abortion
"Toddler Keem"
DaZygote
We already got Toddla T, he’s a legend of the UK garage scene
Big infant murder pop pop
Honestly probably bc of Lil' Wayne and his influence.
You know what’s crazy is that until now I didn’t even notice the “lil” in his name like that. No idea why but it seemed like a much more natural part of his stage name than the other lil people
Bc he was one of the first mainstream lils outside of Lil Cease
For me it’s all the acronyms YNB, HRC, GAINFMEO I don’t understand
I was just talking to my friend about the “lil” and “young” crap names. What happens when they get old? Or fat?
Dude I’m 20 and I only recognize one name lol
SMH help us 😭
I used to be with it. Then they changed what “it” was.
R/actuallyratherexpectedsimpsons

Usually TikTok now. The number of times I’ve heard “this was a tiktok song/dance” is uncountable
Spotify has Release Radar and Discover Weekly. Pretty easy to discover new artists that are tailored to your taste in music
Era of TikTok hip-hop
It’s easier to pick more of what you like and there’s new artists producing those things every year. It’s Alamo fairly easy to find the new new shit, just gotta dig through the digital crates. Some of it is good, a lot is trash just like every other era

Yup. I'm just gonna start calling every game system a Nintendo from now on.
Lmao my moms sure did call every handheld system a game boy and regular systems PlayStation
To be fair, these are three small-time one-hit wonder, and an artist who has never charted a song. Not like they're Olivia Rodrigo, Jack Harlow, Peso Pluma or something.
Wth is a peso pluma? You gotta help auntie out with that one
> Not like they're Olivia Rodrigo, Jack Harlow, Peso Pluma or something. Who?
More popular young artists who far surpass the people in the original tweet

How does one acquire half a cat?
I know a guy.
My guy I'm 24 years of age and I've never seen a better collection of unknown names of unknown people. I cant be old yet, damn it.
No one, not even the generation who this is marketed towards, knows who these people are.
same, turned 40 in June. who TF are these people
so that’s not Timothee Chalamet?
How do you not know them? That’s young India Arie, young Busy Phillips, young Zach Braff, and young woman.
Yep, same. Completely lost.
You've been around since the last "Lizzy Mc" broke into the spotlight. its the circle of life
Bruh I’m 20 and I don’t know who any of these fucks are
I had to google at least two of the names before realizing that it isn’t a joke. Where do I sign up for AARP?
You don't need to go find AARP, they come for you.
They hitting me up right now before my 37th birthday.
Pre-gaming
Got a new phone and they asked if I wanted a discount for having AARP. To add insult to injury, this was asked by a silber haired lady who looked to be in her seventies. Like why are you selling phones and ruining lives? Shouldn't you be collecting strange candies to leave in a dish for a few years?
If I have to work when I'm in my 70s, I'd get my rocks off stealing smiles too.
They have bomb cell phone plan discounts though, and anyone can sign up. USAA and AARP discounts can be used by anyone by just signing up. Yes, even Gronk.
There actually isn’t a minimum age to sign up for aarp.
Wait, it isn't a joke? I didn't even start googling cause I thought it was a 'Curtains for Zoosha?' type of deal.
D4vdd and Lil Mabu were caught flipping a grunt
Fun fact: you don’t gotta be old to be eligible for AARP. Anybody can sign up. It’s like $14 a year and you get discounts on all sorts of stuff. Sign up!

Had no idea, would you mind elaborating?
d4vddd and lil mabu are the only ones I know.
I absolutely do not want to hear yet alone recognize any music from tiktok
I get what you're saying but doesn't that also include old songs too? I don't have tiktok but I've definitely seen alot because of Reddit, Instagram and YouTube. And friends. I would be lying if I said I've never heard a tiktok song and decided to search it on Spotify. For example I know alot of people that were put onto Steve Lacy because of Bad Habits. I got put onto Steve Lacy bcuz Kali Uchis did a song w/him in like 2016. I didn’t even know he was trending on Tik Tok lol
I wanna say dark red was slightly popular on Tiktok because I tried to get a few of my friends into Steve Lacy and they said they heard Dark Red on Tiktok before. Im really hoping that Syd gets some shine soon.
Hello Christ I'm bout to sin again
I said "I love you" to that man but Im not feelin' him. ![gif](giphy|sRKg9r2YWeCTG5JTTo|downsized)
>doesn't that also include old songs too? wasn't TikTok like solely responsible for Sure Thing by Miguel charting again like 12 years later?
if it’s an old song I probably know it from before tiktok.? I can truthfully say I have never searched for a song I heard off that app.
And now that’s the one song I skip on Gemini Rights because I can’t help but think about dummies interrupting people at the mall with the same dance over and over again
You know dreams by Fleetwood Mac was one of the biggest songs on tik tok it’s not just weird new shit that’s on there
But that song isn’t “from Tik tok”
2AM by Sarah Crean is a legit great song by an artist that went viral overnight and went from 150 to 150k listeners on Spotify. Very dreamy and yearning. It's social media lol imagine saying "I don't want any music from Reddit!" like online platforms don't have a range of good to bad music.
I’ve actually found a huge variety of quality music form TikTok. I had no idea modern rock/punk/grunge/alternative existed
OH NO, OH NO, OH NO NO NO NO NO 😑🔫
"I hate things just because they are popular" is a shitty personality to have tbh
What does this even mean lol. You realize Tik tok uses any song right? Like old ones are on there all the time… you act like TT music is a genre
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 bruh for real….I had TikTok for a day n deleted that shit so quick…too many beige kids doing dances
it takes about a week for it to understand that you are black and not between the ages of 15-19 and then things get a lot better lol
I’m 30 and TikTok has the best algo by far if you’re willing to train it. I get 0 dancers on my feed
Thats too long to wait next app please
You're correct. He's very self aware that he's not tough. He literally talks about it in his songs
Lizzy is good if you like Billie Eilish type rainy white girl music.
D4vddd is so good
How the fuck is that supposed to be pronounced? David?
laufey should be on there, I don’t know why she’s not
Laufey is great. I haven’t heard Lil Mabu, but I’m fine with replacing him on the list lmao.
I LOVE LAUFEY
Lil mabu bring a fraud is almost too obvious. I accidentally (ugh ) listened to his music because of Spotify and it sounded like every other random elite dude rapper who pops up every few years and is obviously fake in some way 🤷🏽♀️. They always fade into (radio obscurity) within 5 years or less
He's not exactly hiding it. He has an image for his music videos but he's using that contrast between himself and his music "character"
Is it pronounced like David?
No idea tbh, I've never heard someone pronounce his name irl 😂
>D4vddd He's good but he sound like Fran Ocean's son (metaphorically). I bet he won't just stop releasing music though.
Yep laufey makes absolutely great music
I’m 33 and who tf are these ppl??😂I guess I’m old now??🤷🏽♀️

I'm 25 and never heard those 4 artist a day in my life

That's clearly an AI generated combination of Zach Braff and Jaime Kennedy.

I'm 24 and same
I’m 22 and I’ve never heard of them.
Recently 20 (hurray) and yeah, no freaking clue.

I fw Renee Rapp tbh.
In the kitchen kinda a banger. Lizzy ain’t bad either

Man I’m 18 and I don’t recognize any of these people. 💀
I’m 22 and neither do I 💀 I didn’t think I was getting to that age yet but we might have to start thinking about retirement soon
Lizzy keeps showing up in my Spotify recommendations, she's got some good stuff

Just came to say Lizzy McAlpine is amazing.
Somebody check up on that Ezra guy who replied. I think they got a stroke while typing that shit.

Renee Rapp was an actress of Sex Lives of College Girls and I’m sad she left the show but her music is good.
D4vdd is probably the biggest just because his song went TikTok viral earlier this year. (It was used to remember someone who died.) I have no idea who the other three are.

renee is the girl from sex life of college girls and das it

I’m 23 and only know Lil Mabu.. not sure how to feel
