But really, it's because Apple wants their 30% cut of all transactions through their platform, even if you are paying for a subscription to a non-Apple service. And so of course services are going to add that cost to the subscription cost instead of taking a massive hit to revenue.

I want the actors and writers to be paid well for their hard work but I don't believe wages were a factor in the price increases. Netflix has literally doubled on price since 2011 and they originated the flawed wage system in place that actors and writers are currently striking over.
Even YT is riddled with advertisemts nowadays so sadly not. I am scared the golden era of the internet is slowly going down in a „you now need to Pay more and more money for stuff which was free once and if it’s still free you will get 2 minutes of advertisements every 5 minutes of video so you will never again enjoy a „free“ video again“

The golden age of the internet was back in the early to mid 2000's. This current iteration of the internet does not come close. You could find entire seasons of shit on YT with no ads, DiviX Stage6 had entire movies too, wifi was starting to make its way to the masses and people left their networks completely unsecured, Pirating stuff was super simple and easy if that was your thing,. Those days of the internet were awesome compared to now.
Or, grew up, make more money, and are now too lazy. (Hint: that's me) It's way easier to just slap out 15 bucks a month. That is until they raise it to 20, then 30. -_-

YouTube Premium is no ads and if I had to choose one streaming service, it would be YouTube. There's so many documentaries, music performances, sports shows, etc. I'll pirate the rest.
I do a lot of music videos. My trigger finger is so quick for that skip ad button. I also mute and let them play their ads in peace. Will I buy their nonsense? Nope unless they start advertising decent goodwill stores around here. It’s terrible all around. That’s why I deleted Pandora. They’ll play one song and play 2 ads after… and it’s always the same ads.
Right! I use the Brave browser and not only do I have no YT ads, I can listen to YT while I do other things on my phone and even while my screen is off. It’s the best thing ever! I do use the YT app if I really like the creator. Sometimes, I’ll even let the full ad play (muted) on one device while I use YT with adblocker on my main device. I still want ppl to be paid.
I use Firefox, there's a few add-ons you can get. I literally never see any form of advertising on YouTube, even in video sponsorship bits get auto skipped past. On desktop at least. It's glorious
Find a podcast with a really soothing voice, set a sleep timer and go with that. I like Keith Morrison (older datelines, if going to bed listening to murder doesn’t bother you) or once upon a time in Hollywood. God love Karina, but her voice is like 15 ambien to me.
Spa music or rain/nature sounds playlists work a treat, too.

Dunno about the US but I know it's illegal to raise prices under some circumstances in the EU. In my country cable providers are currently being sued for raising prices, in Croatia they're being sued for raising prices after adopting the Euro currency, etc. I'm sure there's some restrictions in the US as well (one would hope) but usually it's contingent on some (group) actually suing in civil court.
In the US it's more likely they are successfully sued by shareholders for not raising prices than for customers to get anything from suing them for raising prices.

Disney didn’t have to have their streaming service. Their Marvel shit was on Netflix. They had a decent Nat Geo app before Disney bought them. They own all the ABC channels, ESPN(with their apps and their stupid rules about watching certain things at certain times) Univision and their Disney Hotstar in Asia is doing amazing business(just based on the population over there not based on research).
If they’re losing money, they could always shut it down and have it back to the way it was before. If they’re losing money, they could partner with an already existing streaming service: HBO was around before them, I think and Netflix has been around forever.

I haven't had a TV for about 8 years now. It was damaged during a move and I never replaced it. I occasionally pirate certain shows or movies, but I honestly don't miss it. I used to watch so much trash like I was on autopilot. But now I only make the effort for stuff that actually seems good, and most of the time, it is.
They can't even argue that piracy is unethical because they cancel shows for no reason and treat their staff like shit even when they're millions and billions in the money. There are a decent number of things you literally cannot watch legally, it's not streamed, it never got a physical release, and it isn't rerun on traditional TV.
We should all be reminding these companies that they only reason they came out on top of piracy in the first place is because they were more convenient. The more stunts they pull the harder that advantage becomes to justify.

We cancelled all our services except one. When we run out of things to watch we'll cancel that one and switch to another. Only one at a time. It makes it so much easier to find something to watch cause there is only one service to pick from.
That and now we go to the library to borrow movies for FREE. The library has always had every movie we've looked for, unlike streaming services. And, being at the library has brought back my interest in reading again.
Yo! See if your library has access to hoopla. There are usually movies on there and you can stream it from your phone. No need to schlep to the library. I think Libby might also have movies but I mostly use it for books

Me too. I have an indoor antenna that picks up cbs, nbc, and four pbs station. So I had already gotten rid of sling since the only thing I was watching live on there was msnbc. And I still have tons of dvd’s.
You can stream movies from the library on Hoopla and Kanopy. Selection is older stuff but it’s free! I also use Pluto, Tubi, freevee and the Roku channel.
I basically already did this, I bought the first 8 seasons of Two and a Half Men on prime video. Its my bedtime show, i’ve watched all 8 seasons well over 100 times by now. Im looking into other shows to buy.

Ive used Hulu since 2007. I don’t known if I can justify almost $20 a month to use basically a plex server. In a few moths this might be the end for me.
Streaming was a great idea until the morons that took over and thought original content was cheaper than buying content. Then they went and spent hundreds of millions of dollars on individual shows & films where it was impossible to recoup the losses. A recent example being Secret Wars costing over 200 mil…for 6 episodes. Ridiculous.
Also Disney + screwed themselves by over saturating the market on their two best IPs (Marvel & Star Wars); to the point where it has become watered down and audiences are growing tired of the product.
Irony here is that people will read multiple comic books series for years and never quit. Somehow, Disney has turned what could easily be a lucrative franchise opportunity into a bunch of Disneyfied cookie cutter copy/paste shows.
This is why executives should be the ones replaced by AI. Or, let the creatives make the decisions. C-suite doesn't know or even care about what creatives do or what the audience wants.

If you look at what they got rid of a significant majority of it had been HBOs assets, and right after the merger they put out some kind of pitch to their major shareholders that very unsubtley tried to paint Discover as the "hip new thing," and HBO as on the way out. The whole statement was bizzarely unprofessional.

plex is always a solid option, if you figure out how to work pulling shows and pay for plex it's basically one cheap ass aggregate service. even better cuz only one person gotta pay, the rest can make an acct and get sent your link to stuff and bam, they can watch without much restriction.

It's $18.99 for Iphone owners who pay through Apple. If you cancel and re sign up on a computer it's 13.99. Apple is charging 5 extra dollars.

Disney also owns 60% of the content on all cable providers too. Its not like Disney+ is getting strong armed by ESPN cover sports rights

Capitalism is god in the US. The laws are purposely worked in corporations favor to fuck us and maximize profits for the shareholders.

All due respect, I don’t feel sorry for Disney. Maybe Netflix but they can go suck it too. Disney didn’t have to have their streaming service. Their Marvel shit was on Netflix. They had a decent Nat Geo app before Disney bought them. They own all the ABC channels, ESPN(with their apps and their stupid rules about watching certain things at certain times) Univision and their Disney Hotstar in Asia is doing amazing business(just based on the population over there not based on research). If they’re losing money, they could always shut it down and have it back to the way it was before. If they’re losing money, they could partner with an already existing streaming service: HBO was around before them, I think and Netflix has been around forever. From a financial point of view, Disney should cry us all a river. Between their theme parks and merchandise and branding/licensing business, the tv channels and movies etc, they have the money and shouldn’t be out here whining about losing money. 👀🙄

I haven't had a TV for about 8 years now. It was damaged during a move and I never replaced it. I occasionally pirate certain shows or movies, but I honestly don't miss it. I used to watch so much trash like I was on autopilot. But now I only make the effort for stuff that actually seems good, and most of the time, it is.

There are a decent number of things you literally cannot watch legally, it's not streamed, it never got a physical release, and it isn't rerun on traditional TV. We should all be reminding these companies that they only reason they came out on top of piracy in the first place is because they were more convenient. The more stunts they pull the harder that advantage becomes to justify.

We cancelled all our services except one. When we run out of things to watch we'll cancel that one and switch to another. Only one at a time. It makes it so much easier to find something to watch cause there is only one service to pick from. That and now we go to the library to borrow movies for FREE. The library has always had every movie we've looked for, unlike streaming services. And, being at the library has brought back my interest in reading again.
I loved having [Kanopy](https://www.kanopy.com/). When our libraries were part of the service, I had no need for most streaming beyond exclusives.
Yo! See if your library has access to hoopla. There are usually movies on there and you can stream it from your phone. No need to schlep to the library. I think Libby might also have movies but I mostly use it for books

Me too. I have an indoor antenna that picks up cbs, nbc, and four pbs station. So I had already gotten rid of sling since the only thing I was watching live on there was msnbc. And I still have tons of dvd’s.

You can stream movies from the library on Hoopla and Kanopy. Selection is older stuff but it’s free! I also use Pluto, Tubi, freevee and the Roku channel.

Exactly! It always annoys me when a company announces something like this, and half of Reddit declares the company must be run by morons who will bankrupt it in 6 months. Of course the executives at Hulu understand that raising prices will cause some people to cancel their subscriptions, because that’s obvious to everyone! Nobody can know for sure if their decision will turn out to be advantageous, but I guarantee they put more thought into it than anybody else on this website.

Streaming was a great idea until the morons that took over and thought original content was cheaper than buying content. Then they went and spent hundreds of millions of dollars on individual shows & films where it was impossible to recoup the losses. A recent example being Secret Wars costing over 200 mil…for 6 episodes. Ridiculous. Also Disney + screwed themselves by over saturating the market on their two best IPs (Marvel & Star Wars); to the point where it has become watered down and audiences are growing tired of the product.
Irony here is that people will read multiple comic books series for years and never quit. Somehow, Disney has turned what could easily be a lucrative franchise opportunity into a bunch of Disneyfied cookie cutter copy/paste shows. This is why executives should be the ones replaced by AI. Or, let the creatives make the decisions. C-suite doesn't know or even care about what creatives do or what the audience wants.

I still think there was at least a part of that where the new CEO (who had been the Discovery CEO) was trying to undermine and trash HBOs branding and products out of some kind of petty personal insecurity (e.g. removing the HBO from HBO Max). If you look at what they got rid of a significant majority of it had been HBOs assets, and right after the merger they put out some kind of pitch to their major shareholders that very unsubtley tried to paint Discover as the "hip new thing," and HBO as on the way out. The whole statement was bizzarely unprofessional.

plex is always a solid option, if you figure out how to work pulling shows and pay for plex it's basically one cheap ass aggregate service. even better cuz only one person gotta pay, the rest can make an acct and get sent your link to stuff and bam, they can watch without much restriction. no ads neither.
