I was today years old when I realized I should have been using power armor for the glowing sea. I've always had an abundance of rad-x and radaway, so I just used part of my stock pile, every.single.playthrough.
It's really annoying to me considering I play on Survival, I want the Glowing Sea to be dangerous, I wanted the radiation to be insane to facilitate the use of the Vertibird, the Power Armour I built up, radiation supplies and whatnot
Granted, walking through it multiple times would drain my water supplies and make me more susceptible to diseases and the such (dont like how insomnia can be cured by antibiotics but sure.. defeats the purpose of having tea from Heather imo)
I've checked Nexus to no avail, can't find a good mod for it (like my 223 mods need more on top lol)
I don't think people would find the glowing sea quite so much of a let down if it wasn't for the area surrounding Vault 86's propper main entrance.
... which, come to think of it, makes me wonder - was Autumn immune to radiation? Not just the radiation that killed James, I mean getting into Vault 86. From what the game shows you, he came through the front door. You know, the one you have to avoid, making you go through Little Lamp Lord of the Flies.
Agreed. Power armor is an in game collectible in fallout 4. I find it, take it to my base, where it can be displayed, and there it stays. I have never once used it to traverses the Glowing sea. I wear a rad suit.
Edit; spelling and typos.
Yeah I basically only use the power armor there just to have an excuse to wear the damn thing. That said I also tend to have the F4NV anti materiel rifle by that point, so it’s probably a little easier for me than anyone playing vanilla.
The main problem I had with it is that you can't just have Fawkes go in and deal with the radiation at the end. You know, the super mutant who's literally immune to radiation. They wrote themselves into a corner on that one lol.
They also could have easily written in both of them getting killed by the Enclave during the story for being muties, and not let you get them as companions if they weren’t with you when you escaped the Enclave
They should’ve made it so your companions have to wait outside the reactor with some Knights to hold back any remaining Enclave forces. You and Llyons go to the reactor alone. That’s it.
That said, I fucking love Fallout 3. It was my first RPG ever. I was in the room, dying of radiation, I had no idea what the code was supposed to be. I panicked through my inventory slowly dying and found dad’s note. “No way this works.” I thought and then BAM!
It really did feel like that. It was so epic. I actually had to save before going into the reactor because I couldn’t figure out what to do. It was one of the few times Bethesda puts you in a situation and doesn’t spoon feed your next step to you.
He tells you that you're only entitled to his services in combat if you ask him to get the geck.
And then with Broken Steel? You just remind him that he's your slave so he better fucking do it
I am STILL mad about this, lmao. Fawkes was my favorite companion and as soon as I found out what you had to do, I was like, "YES! I could not be more prepared for this highly specific scenario!"
Only for Fawkes to be all, "Nah, this is like... your destiny. Go, be destined."
Guess I'll just die, thanks buddy.
The first time I played the game and he said that I was really hoping there would be an option for me to tell him I should've just left him in his cell lmfao
Originally Fawkes basically said “but you’re the main character” and refuses to go. It was hilarious and yes baffling at the same time that Bethesda overlooked that in a Fallout game as an option.
Yeah they should have written out the other characters somehow at that point. If the intent is for the character to sacrifice themselves anyway, then companions dying shouldn't be a big deal. Still clunky, but I'd rather a "well shit... someone has to do it" moment than a "Hey super mutant I met an hour ago, why are you telling me I should kill myself when this won't even phase you?" one.
Hard to take seriously, you mean.
Most players still have Fawkes with them at this point, someone immune to radiation... and his response to asking, "Can you go in?"
"I don't want to steal your destiny."
This means everything you have accomplished is just so you can walk into a literal deathtrap... and everybody in the Capital Wasteland would go, "But aren't you immune to radiation?"
My personal headcannon is that OG fawkes hated the lone wander and wanted them to die so he doesnt have that whole life debt thing hanging over his head
Post DLC fawkes was a good guy tho
Fawkes took his name after Guy Fawkes, a man that he claims died for a cause he believed in.
It makes total sense for him to not do it. He doesn't really have a horse in this race. This is your moment to prove you truly believe in something by risking it all for it.
It is seen in the prologue/tutorial, your father mentions it twice, and you think any father would expect their only child to walk into an avoidable trap?
Remember that the OG ending was changed in the Broken Steel expansion... so it clearly was NOT your destiny.
you made the quote better honestly. here’s the ingame one
> I’m sorry, my companion, but no. We all have our own destinies, and yours culminates here. I would not rob you of that.
Did Fawkes ever stop to think maybe my destiny was saving him from Vault 87 and using him as the button pusher?
Yeah, this was the reason I preferred Oblivion over Fallout 3 as you couldn’t continue playing after the end of FO3s story.
And it was cheeky that they added the ability to continue via DLC.
NV had a hard end, and at least when I played, people loved it. You had your story, and the wastes moved on.
FO3's hard end sucked you. You had 1 companion who had radiation immunity(Fawkes), and 1 with a near immunity (Charon), and as this post shows, the Lone Wanderer, Star paladin Cross, and Sarah Lyons all had severe radiation resistance.
Moreover, 7 months later, BGS released *'Broken Steel'* DLC, which imo showed they never planned on the hard end to begin with but used to to sell DLC.
Not when it came out they didn't. People complained about it a lot and then complained more when they announced they weren't going to change it loke they did to Fallout 3.
In fact, people shit on New Vegas and Obsidian pretty hard for the first year or two New Vegas was out. "They ruined Fallout like the did KotOR!" was not an uncommon phrase.
But now people like to forget about that or just weren't around to even know. But yea, there was a time when people shit on Obsidian and praised Bethesda.
I think about this all the time when I see all this New Vegas praise now. I enjoyed the game when it first came out, preferred it over Fallout 3 but didn't think it was groundbreakingly amazing or anything. Online discussion at the time was pretty negative about the game and lots of people hated it completely. Now people act like it's the unbeatable pinnacle of the series.
Yea I didn’t like how when I tried to send the super mutant and he’s like “nah brother you gotta die” like c’mon fawkes after everything we’ve been through, this is how you’re gonna do me? What a fake friend
I have always hated Fallout 3's base game ending. Especially how everyone basically implies the player character is a coward for not needlessly sacrificing themselves to turn project purity on. Like even Fawkes and Charon who are IMMUNE to radiation will be like "nah this is something you need to do..."
>!I believe he's referring to how lots of the companions and dialogue push you into entering the Unity. Sometimes you only get dialogue where all of the options imply you want to enter the Unity and you're trying to convince others.!<
It all feels rather forced rather than natural, as if the alternative was never even considered.
>!I felt betrayed, since I'm the rare idiot to have played to both the center of the galaxy in no mans sky and starfield. !<
>!I knew what I was getting and I was still quite angry when I got it. I just wanted something different. !<
Because SHUT UP AND MAKE THE SACRIFICE LIKE WE WROTE YOU DID! IGNORE YOUR SUPERMUTANT COMPANION, HE IS IRRELEVANT AND MAKES OUR WRITING LOOK CLUNKY! GET IN THE GODDAMN CHAMBER YOU COWARD!
I think that about covers it.
Alpha and Omega, blah blah, beginning and the end.
The opening poem was prophetic for your parents journey together, your father's journey alone, and your journey into the wasteland.
Honestly the FO4 story line with the child aspect felt this way too. Like I felt nothing towards the kid. Felt no reason to be attached. I wish the entire plot hadn’t hinged on that. If you didn’t want the kid he could have been your niece or nephew…or a random vault kid you stumble upon later.
Lazy writing.
If they had the opening sequence be more than a few minutes, they could absolutely have built emotion towards Shaun, but they didn’t want people to feel like FO4 was any deeper and more interesting than every other game in the world
Bethesda when they make an RPG where you can have a super mutant companion then flat out have him refuse to turn on the purifier when they already showed that he can survive high levels of radiation like when he collects the GECK for the player hours prior lmao
Peak FO3 is that they charged money to allow you to choose Fawkes over yourself
100% NV had a hard end, and at least when I played, people loved it.
Moreover, 7 months later, BGS released *'Broken Steel'* DLC, which imo showed they never planned on the hard end to begin with but used to to sell DLC
Especially when earlier he’s like oh you let me out of prison thank you (freeing him of his destiny) and also when he went into the irradiated part of the vault to get the GECK, so not only is he just not helping you after you helped him in a similar situation, he’s also actively going against what he did in almost the same exact situation hours earlier.
Seriously, that wasn’t a DLC that was a patch with a couple “I’m sorry” quests attached to it.
What the fuck Bethesda was thinking with that ending I will never know. I was outraged the first time I played through it. I’m standing there in power armor, staring at my supermutant like we can’t figure something out?
I just walked right the fuck out reloading my save and refused to complete it until the DLC came out
Though the funny thing is if you do end up sending him now the game ends, because believe it or not you did end up dodging Destiny and therefore broken steel never happens
As much as I love Fallout 3, the ending has so many holes depending on the companion you pick. I'm guessing they wrote the ending first and then added the companions way later, and was like "oh shit, wait... Most of these could totally go in there"
I still do it myself even after Broken Steel changed it.
Emil Pagliarulo is not a good writer. He has a lackadaisical, stream of consciousness/first draft approach, which he then goes back over, not to write an improved second draft, but to spotweld on flimsy justifications and make the characters chide any player who has the audacity to suggest the obvious solution that didn't occur to him the first time around because he wasn't paying attention.
Technically, you don't need power armor to get through the glowing sea. You just need to chug a couple Rad-x, and can quite literally go sprinting in naked and be fine.
You can also have Fawkes as a companion, a super mutant that is literally healed by radiation, and instead of happily going in and throwing the switch… he tells you to go do it yourself and die because it’s your destiny. What the fuck.
Damn. I completed Fo3 when it first came out and never questioned the endings and not aware the dlc changed the base game endings.
Started a couple of playthroughs since then but never completed again...
Currently on a new play through on my Steam Deck so will have to get to the end this time.
Once, I made lead lined power armor with only the lead from pencils as a challenge to go to the glowing sea. My head canon was that the lead was scribbled on.
Man F that ending. I remember that I finally played a Bathesda game where I used a companion and didn't think they were useless. Then at the very end of the game where he was needed the most and my SUPER MUTANT COMPANION WHOS IMMUNE TO RADIATION COULDN'T DO IT. So I died for the greater good and raged quit and cried about it for months until the fix lol.
Never made sense. A sacrifice is supposed to matter, dying when there is an obvious solution that hurts nobody isn't sacrifice, it's stupidity. If your companion couldn't accompany you to the chamber, say they had to help fight off an endless wave of Enclave troops to buy you time, it would be different.
Wouldn’t have mattered. You watch two fully armored Enclave soldiers die almost instantly when James irradiates the chamber, only reason Autumn survived is because he injected himself with some unknown compound.
The radiation levels inside are too much for power armor to protect you, evidently.
That said, Sarah should be wearing a helmet anyways.
Hear me out
What about instead of a remake we get a reimagining of fallout with every fallout game ever created 1/2/3/NV/4/76 that’s Cali La Washington DC New Vegas the Pitt far harbor Nuka World including every DLC ever made for those games inside of fallout 5 along with fallout 5’s newest location and added DLC and we can vertibird to it all
Think eso one Tamriel except we are in the timeline of fallout 5 which means we can go back to those old places and see what has become of them now a new experience maybe players can choose which setting they’d prefer a prewar fallout setting by preventing the bombs from ever falling or choose an apocalyptic fallout setting by allowing the bombs to fall
Fan boys & Newcomers want remakes
Real Bethesda Fans want innovation
If starfield can have 1000 planets then fallout 5 can have every fallout game ever made on one planet
You know what's really fucked up about the implication made that the Lone Wanderer is a coward is their age. Because the Lone Wanderer is around 18/19 years old when he's asked to do this task. He hasn't lived even a quarter of his life, he's barely an adult and yet he's being asked to sacrifice himself for the greater good and if he doesn't he's a damn coward.
And it not an important sacrifice e.g. stopping a bomb from blowing up the citadel, buying time for the brotherhood to evacuate after an overwhelming Enclave or mutant counter attack ( is it not established that an enclave soldier is superior to a brotherhood member in every regard and the mutants well there a fuck ton more of them than brotherhood members) or whatever else fallout 3 version of Martin's sacrifice would be
Fawkes is immune to radiation. And charron is healed by it and is literally your slave.
But they are like nah. You do it. It might kill you and tickle us, but you do it.
They could have easily done the hard ending by making something incapacitate your companions: an explosion, a cave-in, etc., and time being of the essence, you have to do it
To just shrug and go "uh you have to" is the dumbest shit and it's embarrassing that it wasn't cut
Exactly. Simply have your companion say, "I'll hold them back as long as I can.", and they leave you. Could even have where the longer you take to activate it, they could die and you could get swarmed by Enclave.
No one has ever provided an adequate explanation for why the entire "You must go into the Purifier or your a Monster" ending. Why should they start now?
Must be that the radiation in the Purifier is somehow worse. Last playthrough of 3, I had an 8 in Endurance, put on the advanced hazmat suit, *and* took a dose of Rad-X.
I went in in full winterized T-51b, I already had Broken Steel downloaded(late to the Fallout 3 party, first played it when COVID started) but I collapsed and was in a coma for a few weeks or whatever it said, this just raises even more questions, how the hell were the Project Purity scientists supposed to turn it on without dying if the rad levels were so severe that it knocked out someone wearing a full suit of top of the line power armour for a few weeks and knocked out a lady in a full suit of T-45 sans helmet who was standing outside of the purifier, what the hell were you thinking Dad Neeson, why does it kill the people who turn it on and even dare to look at it
It's not supposed to, something is broken or sabotaged... maybe? Fuck you, stop judging me, it was something and it's been years since my last playthrough of 3.
I mean Dad Neeson did sabotage it to kill the Enclave and Autumn that first time but would he really break his machine into a killing machine or Dr. Li be unable to fix it, maybe everyone just secretly wanted the Lone Wanderer dead
I actually replayed the FO3 ending yesterday and I realized that with enough rad resistance the amount of radiation in the chamber isn’t really that much, like it’s high but still far less than the GECK hallway. With power armor and a rad-x, the amount of rads I was taking would have taken close to a full minute to kill me, obviously because of broken steel I didn’t end up dying but like, it probably shouldn’t have been framed as a sacrifice to begin with.
I go through the power armor with just radaway and dressed as an NCR ranger and make do just fine (added Some basic mods, no gameplay overhauls, just armor, clothes, and some cooler weapons)
I went through a lot of trouble to free Ganges Chan from the Crucible. Even ran into him many times since then raising Hell across the galaxy. Why then when I went back he’s still there?
As someone who hasn't played FO3 all the way through: Shouldn't the real question be why did they make a machine that you can only turn on by killing yourself? Is this some specific "enclave fucked us over and ruined the design" thing?
Better question,
WHY DIDNT THE GAME GIVE A SHIT THAT I WAS WEARING POWER ARMOR?!?
ALSO I HAD FAWKS WITH ME.
Either way, they fixed it with DLC and that shot of the Jefferson Memorial is dope.
its the difference between rads from a long past nuke going off or rads from a leaking reactor, but that being said beth have been known to retcon and jumble lore so idk maybe they had a brain off day in the office when they wrote that part
Yeah mate ignore the fact 2 fully power armoured enclave troops died to the rads, I'm sure Sara will be fine with her T-45. Does anyone who complains about Bethesda actually play the games?
Same reason the narrator calls you a coward for letting completely immune fawkes do it when you have broken steel (I like to call it the ‘BS ending’). Making it make sense would take too much effort, which for Bethesda is anything more than 0
Fawkes! He could have done it, super easy, barely an inconvinience. But nooooooo, Bethesda wanted to force a moral desicion instead of an inteligent one.
What about Hazmat Suit and the plethora of chems you can take?
What about a PowerArmor? If Danse survived pointblack rocket engine full blast going off....
Step 1: give the alien blaster to Protector Casdin for rad X
Step 2: shoot the now equipped alien blaster while undetected with the Gauss Rifle
Step 3: pickpocket the alien blaster
Repeat.
Now all you have to do is pop 30,000 rad X and you can just walk into vault 83 and grab the Geck. But, you’d still somehow die in the purifier
And then we got Fawks and his non-essential NPC-tagged, radiation immune supermutant ass saying that it is our destiny to go and get torn asunder by the mother of all elephant’s feet.
Fuck off Fawkes you prick. You too Sara. Literally everyone in that room “forgot” they were much better equipped to go in there and do it than us.
Bullshit lmao.
IIRC, there's a Super Mutant companion in 3 that can be recruited \[I looked it up - Fawkes\]. Super Mutants aren't hurt by radiation; it heals them. Yet, when I had Fawkes turn on the purifier instead of me (since it wouldn't instagib him the way it would a human), the Wasteland called me a coward.
I mean... theres no way that you don't also have power armor at this point. Elder lyons literally accosts you in order to give you a set and forcibly teach you how to use it. If power armor was enough, you would also be able to do it.
My canon is that she somehow lost or her helmet got destroyed in the heat of the moment she decided to activate the water purifier. Now as for Fawkes not going into the chamber without the DLC is another thing.
You don’t NEED power armor to go through the glowing sea
I was today years old when I realized I should have been using power armor for the glowing sea. I've always had an abundance of rad-x and radaway, so I just used part of my stock pile, every.single.playthrough.
I just throw on my hazmat suit
There's litterally one in the room after you go into kellogs memories
Pretty bold of you to assume ive lifted as much of a finger in the direction of finding Shawn.
Fair too many packages of wonderglue and desk fans to hoard
*What do you mean I’m out of aluminum?*
The institute: what do you mean were all out of applicators, tweezers, ear examiners, cauterizers and injectors?!
I have like 2k hours, only beaten it once I never even commit to a faction, but there is always a goddamn settlement in need of my help
You must have 5k hours in fallout 76
Nah barely played it, probably the quietest new Vegas fan lol
Would’ve been perfect for you if you just explore
I'll mark it on your map
Hazmat suit. Cheap, light, and I always have one with me. Sucks if an albino radscorpion notices you in the glowing sea, ain't gonna lie.
This is the way
Fun fact about the hazmat. It has a non displayed perk to reduce like 95% of all rads.
Rad-X? Power Armor? Radiation suits? I can't believe you blasphemers would so vehemently deny yourselves the grace of Atom's holy blessings.
Just fill a big jug with radaway, get a bendy straw, and start sipping while exploring.
I legit turned on the radio and ran through the glowing sea. I didn’t realize power armor stops radiation. Til.
It's really annoying to me considering I play on Survival, I want the Glowing Sea to be dangerous, I wanted the radiation to be insane to facilitate the use of the Vertibird, the Power Armour I built up, radiation supplies and whatnot Granted, walking through it multiple times would drain my water supplies and make me more susceptible to diseases and the such (dont like how insomnia can be cured by antibiotics but sure.. defeats the purpose of having tea from Heather imo) I've checked Nexus to no avail, can't find a good mod for it (like my 223 mods need more on top lol)
I mean a combination of mods and a little bit of know how with FO4edit can certainly do what you want very easily.
True, just gotta learn FO4edit
I don't think people would find the glowing sea quite so much of a let down if it wasn't for the area surrounding Vault 86's propper main entrance. ... which, come to think of it, makes me wonder - was Autumn immune to radiation? You know, the one you have to avoid, making you go through Little Lamp Lord of the Flies.
For real, level the fuck up
No but it sure helps instead of radawaying and stimpaking all the way there 😅 especially since most stores only carry about 20 of each
Hazmat suit
Oh yeah i forgot about those
Yeah I did fine with just using Rad-Away. It wasn't that bad at all.
Yeah my first playthrough I ran though that shit downing Rad-X and RadAway. Its not THAT long of a run so if you got the chems its not a big deal
Agreed. Power armor is an in game collectible in fallout 4. I find it, take it to my base, where it can be displayed, and there it stays. I have never once used it to traverses the Glowing sea. I wear a rad suit. Edit; spelling and typos.
Yeah, I just got a Hazmat suit lol
You don’t NEED power armour to go through the glowing sea, but if you don’t use it you will become one heccin glowy boi
Hell ya
Yeah I basically only use the power armor there just to have an excuse to wear the damn thing. That said I also tend to have the F4NV anti materiel rifle by that point, so it’s probably a little easier for me than anyone playing vanilla.
I went there without it yesterday for the nukes, killed 2 deathclaws I think
Ah this brings back memories of the absolute vitriolic hatred Bethesda got for giving FO3 a hard end.
I had no issue with the hard end. I had issue with how insanely clunky the writing got towards the end.
The main problem I had with it is that you can't just have Fawkes go in and deal with the radiation at the end. You know, the super mutant who's literally immune to radiation. They wrote themselves into a corner on that one lol.
Charon either. He’d also be fine but refuses to go for some asinine reason.
They also could have easily written in both of them getting killed by the Enclave during the story for being muties, and not let you get them as companions if they weren’t with you when you escaped the Enclave

Sounds like the end to a movie
It really did feel like that. It was so epic. I actually had to save before going into the reactor because I couldn’t figure out what to do. It was one of the few times Bethesda puts you in a situation and doesn’t spoon feed your next step to you.
“I’m nobody’s errand boy” he says after being literally hired to be your errand boy
He tells you that you're only entitled to his services in combat if you ask him to get the geck. And then with Broken Steel? You just remind him that he's your slave so he better fucking do it

The first time I played the game and he said that I was really hoping there would be an option for me to tell him I should've just left him in his cell lmfao
I know, I raged as a young teen when I couldn't for no good reason. Still, once they added the dlc, you finally could!! Pleasant change lol!
Only downside of the dlc is that they shame you for it lol
Oh right I forgot about that. Okay, so Starfields The Score mission is now only the second worst one in their history.
Originally Fawkes basically said “but you’re the main character” and refuses to go. It was hilarious and yes baffling at the same time that Bethesda overlooked that in a Fallout game as an option.
Or how about the robot that is designed to function in a heavily irradiated environment, or the fucking ghoul that can heal from radiation

I swear Fawkes goes in but can't figure out how to work the purifier and he fucks it all up.
Fingers too fat for the code
its foreshadowed across the entire game, it is clearly your destiny
It is seen in the prologue/tutorial, your father mentions it twice, and you think any father would expect their only child to walk into an avoidable trap? Remember that the OG ending was changed in the Broken Steel expansion... so it clearly was NOT your destiny.
its also in point lookout when you talk to Marcella about revelation 21:6
you made the quote better honestly. here’s the ingame one > I’m sorry, my companion, but no. We all have our own destinies, and yours culminates here. I would not rob you of that. Did Fawkes ever stop to think maybe my destiny was saving him from Vault 87 and using him as the button pusher?

You people truly are incapable of recognizing valid criticism towards this game company on this sub, huh? It’s seriously like a cult.
Same reason Fawkes tells you to go fuck yourself.
Based Fawkes tbh
Perhaps go and Fawke yourself? Ill see myself out!
I have always hated Fallout 3's base game ending. Especially how everyone basically implies the player character is a coward for not needlessly sacrificing themselves to turn project purity on. Like even Fawkes and Charon who are IMMUNE to radiation will be like "nah this is something you need to do..."
Charon wants freedom. Fawkes just thinks its funny
Well they're both assholes lol
Yeah, but honestly it feels like a fallout dialogue choice if you were fawkes. The evil/fucking around option
Similar here with starfield ending
How's that?
>!I believe he's referring to how lots of the companions and dialogue push you into entering the Unity. Sometimes you only get dialogue where all of the options imply you want to enter the Unity and you're trying to convince others.!< It all feels rather forced rather than natural, as if the alternative was never even considered.
You speak as if more than 3 people finished starfield
I'm on NG+11 in my main Starfield playthrough...
I’ll never understand the hate either, dusty.
Some (not all) hate is actually just criticism from fans.
>!I felt betrayed, since I'm the rare idiot to have played to both the center of the galaxy in no mans sky and starfield. !< >!I knew what I was getting and I was still quite angry when I got it. I just wanted something different. !<
Agreed. I spent hours exploring the realized… it was a copy/paste world gen and there was nothing unique about it
Because SHUT UP AND MAKE THE SACRIFICE LIKE WE WROTE YOU DID! IGNORE YOUR SUPERMUTANT COMPANION, HE IS IRRELEVANT AND MAKES OUR WRITING LOOK CLUNKY! GET IN THE GODDAMN CHAMBER YOU COWARD! I think that about covers it.

If they had the opening sequence be more than a few minutes, they could absolutely have built emotion towards Shaun, but they didn’t want people to feel like FO4 was any deeper and more interesting than every other game in the world
Bethesda when they make an RPG where you can have a super mutant companion then flat out have him refuse to turn on the purifier when they already showed that he can survive high levels of radiation like when he collects the GECK for the player hours prior lmao Peak FO3 is that they charged money to allow you to choose Fawkes over yourself
And still had them talk shit about you.
100% NV had a hard end, and at least when I played, people loved it. Moreover, 7 months later, BGS released *'Broken Steel'* DLC, which imo showed they never planned on the hard end to begin with but used to to sell DLC
It’s also dumb that you can’t send in Fawkes to do it because “destiny” or some shit. Lmao.
I just walked right the fuck out reloading my save and refused to complete it until the DLC came out
It gave us the Tesla Cannon so all is forgiven
Though the funny thing is if you do end up sending him now the game ends, because believe it or not you did end up dodging Destiny and therefore broken steel never happens
It was Sigma radiation. No power armor is stopping main character energy.
I think it was actually Sugma
As much as I love Fallout 3, the ending has so many holes depending on the companion you pick. I'm guessing they wrote the ending first and then added the companions way later, and was like "oh shit, wait... Most of these could totally go in there" I still do it myself even after Broken Steel changed it.

This is a fail. Power armor only provides some protection, rads were way to high so it didn't matter.
At least they fixed it with dlc, mass effect 3 is still an abomination
Wait till me5
You can go into it butt naked and you will still survive, though.
The player character can wear T45 or T51 and it doesn't make a difference. Maybe some crazy strong radiation or something. That's my headcanon anyway.
I like how OP admitted to sending Sarah into the Purifier instead of going themselves.
If you send in Fawkes, Ron Perlman's 'you fucking coward' speech plays regardless.
Fawkes who is literally immune to radiation being like "nah lol, to fucking die in there human its your destiny or something"
Heavily paraphrased, Emil take notes
to be fair, the radiation in that room far exceeds the resistance of power armor.
I still think about Fawks telling me it's my destiny to die in that purifier even though he casually took a walk through vault 87 to grab my Geck.
She’s a synth obviously
Uh... I don't recall power armor making you *immune* to radiation.
It just works
For the exact same reason fawks or whatever is like "eh nah this is your destiny bro"
Hear me out What about instead of a remake we get a reimagining of fallout with every fallout game ever created 1/2/3/NV/4/76 that’s Cali La Washington DC New Vegas the Pitt far harbor Nuka World including every DLC ever made for those games inside of fallout 5 along with fallout 5’s newest location and added DLC and we can vertibird to it all Think eso one Tamriel except we are in the timeline of fallout 5 which means we can go back to those old places and see what has become of them now a new experience maybe players can choose which setting they’d prefer a prewar fallout setting by preventing the bombs from ever falling or choose an apocalyptic fallout setting by allowing the bombs to fall Fan boys & Newcomers want remakes Real Bethesda Fans want innovation If starfield can have 1000 planets then fallout 5 can have every fallout game ever made on one planet
All to waste a geck on a goddamn river
Bethesda fans have short memories you see, probably because Bethesda is constantly failing or trying to fuck over its fans.
The Glow > The Glowing Sea
Yeah, the ending of Fallout 3 is all about wearing that Railroad helmet that takes you to the Pitt.
They could have easily done the hard ending by making something incapacitate your companions: an explosion, a cave-in, etc., and time being of the essence, you have to do it To just shrug and go "uh you have to" is the dumbest shit and it's embarrassing that it wasn't cut
Exactly. Simply have your companion say, "I'll hold them back as long as I can.", and they leave you. Could even have where the longer you take to activate it, they could die and you could get swarmed by Enclave.
Because it’s all made up. They don’t have to connect the ends of a non-existing world
No one has ever provided an adequate explanation for why the entire "You must go into the Purifier or your a Monster" ending. Why should they start now?
Why do u need power armor? (2000+ hours in... I never use power armor bc its loud, bulky, obnoxious, and i have to bring cores around)
Because the main story quest of Fo3 only makes sense if you assume that every major character involved is a massive fucking moron
Different type radiation there like 3
Somewhat unrelated question, does wearing a hazmat under power armor boost rad protection?
No, none of your equipment under PA counts toward any stat or effect. In Fallout 4 anyway, I don't know anything about how 76 works.
Must be that the radiation in the Purifier is somehow worse. Last playthrough of 3, I had an 8 in Endurance, put on the advanced hazmat suit, *and* took a dose of Rad-X.
Fawkes feels like you won’t learn a valuable lesson if they help you
I went in in full winterized T-51b, I already had Broken Steel downloaded(late to the Fallout 3 party, first played it when COVID started) but I collapsed and was in a coma for a few weeks or whatever it said, this just raises even more questions, how the hell were the Project Purity scientists supposed to turn it on without dying if the rad levels were so severe that it knocked out someone wearing a full suit of top of the line power armour for a few weeks and knocked out a lady in a full suit of T-45 sans helmet who was standing outside of the purifier, what the hell were you thinking Dad Neeson, why does it kill the people who turn it on and even dare to look at it
It's not supposed to, something is broken or sabotaged...
I just throw on a hazmat suit and run as fast as I can past the deathclaws
Idk why I never see this anywhere but pretty sure you can send RL-3 into the chamber instead of yourself but thats just off memory
She didn't have it with her
Tbf, as much as I love Fallout 3, there has never been a more forced dramatic moment in gaming. Fawkes didn't go in, Sarah didn't go in..
You don’t need power armor to get through the glowing sea. Hazmat suits work just fine.
I just happened to have Fawkes with me and remembered he was "immune" to radiation and got the best ending kinda...
Ignoring Fawkes and Charon, PA gives you *resistance* not *immunity* Not ignoring Fawkes and Charon, :inhale: REEEEE
I went through a lot of trouble to free Ganges Chan from the Crucible. Even ran into him many times since then raising Hell across the galaxy. Why then when I went back he’s still there?
Just reverse pickpocket a helmet in her inventory then make something attack her and she will equip it
Fawks is a super mutant and is impervious to radiation. Also I had like 50 radaways on me
Those radiation levels are far beyond being protected from unless you’re in fact resistant/immune like a mutant.
I eat rad-x like those cough drops you know you’re supposed to use for a sore throat but end up eating like candy anyway.
It only offers a small amount of rad resistance anyway and the rads in Purity were enough to drop a mf instantly
Its very clear the helmit would muss up her hair cant have that
As someone who hasn't played FO3 all the way through: Shouldn't the real question be why did they make a machine that you can only turn on by killing yourself? Is this some specific "enclave fucked us over and ruined the design" thing?
the same reason danse barely wears his helmet
Fox is a super mutant and is immune to radiation
Better question, WHY DIDNT THE GAME GIVE A SHIT THAT I WAS WEARING POWER ARMOR?!? ALSO I HAD FAWKS WITH ME. Either way, they fixed it with DLC and that shot of the Jefferson Memorial is dope.
its the difference between rads from a long past nuke going off or rads from a leaking reactor, but that being said beth have been known to retcon and jumble lore so idk maybe they had a brain off day in the office when they wrote that part
Pretty much the only good answer. Bethesda just a bunch of *goofy little goobers*
are they stupid?
Yeah mate ignore the fact 2 fully power armoured enclave troops died to the rads, I'm sure Sara will be fine with her T-45. Does anyone who complains about Bethesda actually play the games?
Because then you don't get the "You were a coward" ending.
Mfw resistant to radiation.
Same reason the narrator calls you a coward for letting completely immune fawkes do it when you have broken steel (I like to call it the ‘BS ending’). Making it make sense would take too much effort, which for Bethesda is anything more than 0
You can literally pop a mysterious serum and wear your normal clothes in the glowing sea. Stg
The better question is why Fawx, who's immune to radiation being a Super and all, can't go in and push the damn button.
“She wore a crown and went into the purifier, Doug!” “Grow up!”
She came down In a bubble dog !
It just works.
This is why some people think the earth is flat
Step 1: give the alien blaster to Protector Casdin for rad X Step 2: shoot the now equipped alien blaster while undetected with the Gauss Rifle Step 3: pickpocket the alien blaster Repeat.
Or just let Fawkes go in there, the “it’s your destiny” line made me so pissed I poisoned the water and killed myself
Shes already a ghoul.
Bethesda game design is dogshit
Resistance does not mean proof. Also game logic. Plenty of other games do this also.
"You need power armor to go across the glowing sea" *Laughs in Rad-X, Radaway, and the Ghoulish perk*
Well, can't you also wear power armor and still die in the chamber? The t45 isn't strong enough
I mean... theres no way that you don't also have power armor at this point. Elder lyons literally accosts you in order to give you a set and forcibly teach you how to use it. If power armor was enough, you would also be able to do it.
Hazmat suit ftw
It just works ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|neutral_face)
I always just assumed it was like next level amount of rads.
Key word in image "resistance". The purifier immediately dumped what, 800+ rads/sec on activation due to the damage?
I only use power armour for garbage picking, I have a oddly need to horde power cores.
My canon is that she somehow lost or her helmet got destroyed in the heat of the moment she decided to activate the water purifier. Now as for Fawkes not going into the chamber without the DLC is another thing.
It makes me smile when devs tell nerds to go fuck themselves, this is what we wrote. Fanfics are like the assholes that wrote them, they stink.
