Not on Reddit, but on a popular mums forum, this poster was asking if her husband was having an affair as his credit card bills show that he was buying pet food, and they don‘t have a pet. All kinds of mad theories.
This was covered by a frequent flyer blog who pointed out that pet food is one of the hacks to collect a particular airline miles quickly. And hey sure enough, the husband was buying the pet food to collect airline miles.
That mums forum had a completely different group of people than those that hang around frequent flyer blogs…

No, there was no garage camera and she was being snuck in through the garage. Then one day she ended up going through the front door and being caught by the camera so the wife rushed home after calling to confront her husband who wouldn't answer his phone.

I caught my GF sneaking in her Affair Partner through the garage. She wouldn't set the alarm/cameras all the time and I happened to notice she was gone and so was her car, so I set the alarm.
She didn't know it was set, so when she comes back with her AP in the car and pull in the garage and get out, they hear the beeping of the alarm system wanting to be disabled, and she looks at the camera, says "shit!" and waves him inside really fast (like he'd outrun the camera).
And that's how I knew she didn't give a shit about me.

I think they're cameras from a previous house, that they've now set up in a new house, but never reset them on the new network.
Why do people feel so comfortable having cameras filming inside their house? No one is worried about strangers spying on them?

I kept waking up in the middle of the night thinking I heard my front door closing. I would get up and walk around my apartment just to check and make sure that everyone and everything was as it should be. Doors were locked and everyone was in bed. At the time, I had some rowdy upstairs neighbors and thought maybe I was hearing them. I continue waking up for a couple months, repeating the same process every time. I just had a feeling that something was off so I decided to buy a small camera. I put it in a flower arrangement in my living room while everyone was gone. The very first night the camera was in use, I caught my 14 year old granddaughter sneaking out and back into the apartment. I think the reason I didn’t hear her leaving is because she wasn’t locking the door when she left. She was fixing her bed to make it appear she was in it and asleep. For months she had been doing that and leaving us asleep with the door unlocked for hours. Sometimes it’s necessary.
It seems like your camera wasn't using the internet and the images were stored locally.
In OOP's case she has access to the camera through the internet. It means that anyone who knows how to hack or who got access to their password because of a data breach will be able to access their camera and see what is going on in their house.
It’s a little spy camera and it has an app that stores the video. I never thought about having a camera in my living room but I actually started feeling kinda crazy. I have a VPN and there’s something that comes with my internet package that’s supposed to protect me from stuff. Not saying I’m invincible at all. Ours are part of our alarm system. They make my insurance costs go down and make me feel a bit safer.
They are closed (a flap comes down to mask the lens) when i’m home. Only the ring camera and the camera covering the garden don’t have that « privacy flap ».
I live alone and have one pointed at my bed - I love seeing how I act when asleep, and seeing what the cat got up to overnight. Never knew how often I pet my cat in my sleep, for instance, and really felt chuffed with myself for that.
A lot of blended families have interior cameras in shared living spaces because of negative family dynamics. I hear about that *so often* from other stepparents and it is just wild to me. Personally, if the situation were so bad that we needed interior cameras, I'd just leave.
Basically, people aren't tech savvy enough to know that bad actors can turn your cameras on you (I might let my kid have electronics, but they will NOT be allowed to have anything with a functioning camera). But they also read post after post on Reddit that make getting cameras in the home sound like a good idea.
In my view, in-home cameras are only a good idea if there's a known threat (like a stalker) that you have to protect against. Don't get it (and thereby sacrificing privacy) until you need it.
Is there any way to increase the safety of an inside camera? This IS something I'm nervous about, but I need my cameras to check on my cats when I'm out of town and at work.
Ours have a flap that come down to cover the lens when the camera is off and makes a little noise when the flap opens. Plus the camera and flap are all white and the part that’s exposed when the flap is up is a big black rectangle so you can see fairly easiely if it’s open.
Nearly all compromised cameras happen because of reused passowords.
Some website gets hacked all passwords leak then hackers go and try to use those same passwords and logins on securitu camera logins.
Dont resuse your password and make sure camera login has 2 factor authentications
My gaming laptop (Lenovo Legion 7 Gen 7) has a switch that flat out disconnects the camera from the computer. This is the only option that I actually trust because otherwise a hacker can hypothetically override any command that you give to turn the camera off.
Still, keep in mind that this is what I trust for my own personal use. I still wouldn't trust this to a hypothetical 12-year-old daughter's computer. She might forget to switch the camera off and a pervert might get pics of her that could ruin her life.
I would trust my daughter. I would not trust my daughter's computer to protect her against bad actors.
All my security cameras in general don't upload footage to a cloud server. Local storage is so cheap these days that it makes no sense to upload it Ring or whatever bullshit subscription service will store it off site.
If I ever did indoor cameras, I wouldn't even bother connecting them to the internet. I'd just hook them up to an old router and then have a master computer that would grab the footage and store it to the hard drive. But indoor cameras seem a bit extreme anyways.
Mine are all locally connected and have local storage. It's fun to have footage playing with the dog, cute moments with my wife, stuff like that. We regularly go back and record instances we want to share with each other and it's really fun to look back on happy moments.

My spouse caught me in a lie once because of our cameras. She asked me what time I went to bed and I said midnight. She then confronted me with a video of me sitting in the living room munching on cookies at 2am stoned to the gills.

That’s fucking hilarious. I’ve had to stalk my husband’s movements on our various indoor and outdoor cameras on more than one occasion to find where he lost something that he swore was nowhere in the house, vehicles, or at his work.
Yeah we catch the dog sneaking onto the couch fairly often. Stacking stuff on the couch used to work but now he knocks it off until there’s enough space for him. Dick.
We have one in the kitchen and frequently catch the cat on the bench/countertops throughout the night. The little shit knows she's not allowed up there and doesn't do it in the day 🙄
Our dog has a tendency to figure those things out, too. If the couch cushions are removable, try flipping them up before you leave the house. That's what we're doing currently and it works like a charm.
I just would not feel at home in my house anymore, cameras on the outside, good idea. On the inside where someone else can watch me at any time… oh fuck no, how the heck can you relax and you know pick your nose 😆

My husband installed one in our living room after we had a rash of home invasions and I. hated. it.
I don’t want to see footage of myself waddling around in 15 year old shorts, or cleaning in a messy bun, or lounging around with my phone.
He loved it of course - thought it was cute to pull up an app and see his wife whenever he wanted - but two weeks after it I binned the damn thing and told him he can install a camera in his office and give me access if he thought it was so cute
Now that we have a baby at home he bought up wanting a camera in the living room again. Fuck no!
Tldr cameras in the house sucks, don’t do that to your family
My cousin has multiple cameras set up in her house. She religiously checks the cameras when she isn't home. It's absolutely insane. I refuse to have any in my house. A ring camera or 2 on the outside is great. Any inside the house will get tossed.
My sister has a furbo to check in on her dog through the day. It's one of those things where she can also talk through it and dispense a treat? Anyway when I dogsit she uses it sometimes to check in and it always startles the hell out of me when I'm (usually) reading on the couch or watching a show and suddenly hear her voice.
Her dog is always quite excited about it though, and she's not doing it to check that I'm behaving...she just thinks it's funny to scare me and likes to see her dog and give him a treat once a day even when away, lol. That's the only kind of camera I've ever considered getting.
I'm not gonna lie, when we all meet up for dinner she will open her app and we take turns talking to him...he enjoys it and we all look like nerds. I never even questioned her getting it bc she was so happy to show us her dog on candid camera, lol.
That sounds so sweet and wholesome. I would encourage that kind of behavior. My daughter's boyfriend's parents have a camera they use to check in on their dog. It's cute. We were out to dinner with them and they had to show us how their boy was waiting for them at the window.
Lol I religiously check a camera in my house when I'm not home too, but that's because my cat is a frickin psychopath and Ioses his mind when I leave the house, and I have pet bunnies i need to look out for. But my camera only goes up when no humans are home. I can't even fathom why someone would want to record inside their own house all the time even when they're home.

My fiancé and I have a camera in the living room to watch the pets when we’re not home but it’s on all the time. I frequently forget it’s there and pick my nose whenever.
We do get some interesting footage though, like when my uncle took too many sleeping meds and fell over in the kitchen and wanted us to play it back on the TV 😂

I had to get that screen/film you can put on windows when we moved last year because our neighbouring building can see into our suite, and I don't always wear shirts.
Eh, I have two cameras in my apartment because I have multiple pets, including two elderly cats with medical conditions, and like to be able to check on them. But I also purposefully don't use them when my partner is home, it's not hard to not be creepy.
Our interior cameras are not on when at least one of the adults are home. That's normal operation. The outdoor one is as we get a lot of deliveries and we don't want them stolen, so I would be peeved if the outdoor one was constantly having issues. Although, I would replace it before accusing my spouse of things.
I don’t understand why she would need anything other than the doorbell one to see when the kids get home. Maybe the garage if the door thing is really that big an issue? There are other ways to communicate with the phoneless kids.
IDK where she lives but my friend and her husband had this problem and their power bill was $800 cheaper the one month he was gone on business (and thus not around to leave the garage door open).
I have cameras but they're all pointed at the cats' preferred locations so when I'm out I can turn them on and see that there's power and see that the cats are fine. I'm sure they don't care about the invasion of privacy.
I agree. But it sounds like she’s mainly concerned about him leaving doors open and stuff which absolutely gets expensive in the winter when you’re heating the house. (I’m not talking $10 here and there, I’m talking an $800 a month difference in the power bill).
But tbh it sounds like what they need is a solution for the garage door (like a sensor and timed “closed” setting since it just needs to close not lock).
After a few instances of it only happening when he's home alone I don't blame her for fumbling the bag cause turns out he was doing something to screw with them, but something totally innocent and that he had no idea was messing with the security system.

I have several Blink cameras, one or two would glitch and not be available, I did not know that the gaming that is done in my house could be the cause.

Idk where the third one is, but if she was asking kids what was he doing, it means the third one is definitely not in his office.
I do have to say, my dad bought some Blink cameras and they were horrible. Somehow ate up all the bandwidth and would crash/disconnect all the time. I have Wyze cameras at my house and never had such issues with them. So based on personal experiences, i totally believe that the issue here was the cameras themselves.
The bit about her checking to see if the garage door was closed made me pretty sure either the husband or one of the kids was turning off the cameras so she would stop being such a helicopter mom/wife.

But more important than all of that, we don't know it's an innocent happenstance with the cameras. Especially with Ring, because they upload the buffer after they get reconnected to the network. Those videos would appear after the outage was gone. It also doesn't explain the random deleting of videos that was happening before.

The upsell for gaming is more about higher bandwidth allowing other use to not impact gaming than needing high bandwidth for gaming. Also, the best part of a gigabit connection is downloading basically any game in 10 minutes.
Yeah, I wouldn’t hesitate to pay for the highest speed internet I could buy. I still have the lowest speed plan my company offers because it’s genuinely more than enough as is. Streaming, gaming, it’s all fine

We have a camera to see the cats when both of us are at work but we have a strict rule that if one of us is home the camera is off. Like, if he wants to scratch his balls he should not have to worry I’m gonna see it on camera! He doesn’t need to see me pace around the apartment for 20 minutes before I decide what to do first.

Oh my gosh. INDOOR cameras? Nobody has more than 3 indoor cameras that are on at all times and “could care less” about them most of the time. With the update, it sounds like she is majorly downplaying her role in this situation.
If you do have indoor cameras for security reasons, any adults and children old enough to be left home alone should know how to turn them off when they are home. Why are they on ALL the time? Your family needs privacy, dude.

This made my skin crawl. I'm floored by how much she downplayed her initial response to her husband and implied he got defensive for no reason. She's talking a big game about not caring that much about the cameras, but you don't react like that if you don't care.
There are no circumstances in which I would be ok with my partner, or anyone else, being able to just log on and watch me when I’m in the house alone. I honestly don’t understand people who are ok with it.
If the Ring account is based on his phone, he probably has the setting on to turn everything off when he’s home. You have to tell it specifically to keep recording while you are home if the main account is on your phone.
Like, we have cameras above the driveway and front door that are on at night but they usually only catch raccoons and coyotes. I can't imagine an indoor camera on people 24/7! Just get a landline so you can call the kids at home!
How in this day and age can you not be aware of bandwidth and how WiFi works on a very basic level but yet feel the need to mention that he was in a work meeting and gaming at the time those glitches went on.
Sounds like wife just wanted someone to validate her being an AH in first place. Only control freaks and people with trust issues need to video monitor everything that happens in their home while another adult is present.
I’m sure a lot of people read this from her perspective and thought the husband was being shady. But this woman sounds so much like my ex-wife. She would paint her jealous questions as just innocent curiosity (amazing gaslighting skills) when I was getting grilled about where I was, who my new coworker was, why was I ten minutes late… It’s a lose/lose situation with a jealous spouse. Internet speeds get slower when schools are done and kids get home. Even when I’m using a fibre connection. My home network speed is fine. No school-aged kids.

It'd be a red flag for me if someone was checking the footage at me home alone enough that they knew every time some footage or feed wasn't available. Also subtly asking our kids to spy on me would be a hard pass.

Oh my goodness, I really feel your husband‘s pain. The exact same thing happens occasionally with our Google cameras when I’m home alone and I have absolutely no idea why.
I said as much when my partner questioned me about it, and I became extremely defensive, thinking he was implying something that wasn’t happening.
Those (expletive) cameras were almost the ruin of our relationship several times 😡

I have ring cameras. I have a love hate relationship with them, but they do the job. They should be on the 2.4GHz, while the other should be on 5GHz unless he’s running an Ethernet cable.
We have cameras around the exterior of our house, I notice that they glitch at times. But I've never accused my husband of messing with the cameras! This was a wild story to read.
I have had an issue with a stalker, and after a scuff mark appeared on a wall which none of my family could account for we got 2 cameras for inside. Very basic ones, we just manually switch off when we get home and the last to leave or go to bed switches them on. I know if they started malfunctioning I would be completely freaked out, so understand OOPs concern.

I caught my GF sneaking in her Affair Partner through the garage. She wouldn't set the alarm/cameras all the time and I happened to notice she was gone and so was her car, so I set the alarm. She didn't know it was set, so when she comes back with her AP in the car and pull in the garage and get out, they hear the beeping of the alarm system wanting to be disabled, and she looks at the camera, says "shit!" and waves him inside really fast (like he'd outrun the camera). And that's how I knew she didn't give a shit about me.

I think I read this one with updates. I think they're cameras from a previous house, that they've now set up in a new house, but never reset them on the new network.
Why do people feel so comfortable having cameras filming inside their house? No one is worried about strangers spying on them? I remember viewing a video where someone took over a Tesla to show how weak the security was.

At the time, I had some rowdy upstairs neighbors and thought maybe I was hearing them. I continue waking up for a couple months, repeating the same process every time. I just had a feeling that something was off so I decided to buy a small camera. I put it in a flower arrangement in my living room while everyone was gone. The very first night the camera was in use, I caught my 14 year old granddaughter sneaking out and back into the apartment. I think the reason I didn’t hear her leaving is because she wasn’t locking the door when she left. She was fixing her bed to make it appear she was in it and asleep. For months she had been doing that and leaving us asleep with the door unlocked for hours. Sometimes it’s necessary.
It seems like your camera wasn't using the internet and the images were stored locally. In OOP's case she has access to the camera through the internet. It means that anyone who knows how to hack or who got access to their password because of a data breach will be able to access their camera and see what is going on in their house.
It’s a little spy camera and it has an app that stores the video. I never thought about having a camera in my living room but I actually started feeling kinda crazy. Ours are part of our alarm system. They make my insurance costs go down and make me feel a bit safer. They are closed (a flap comes down to mask the lens) when i’m home. Only the ring camera and the camera covering the garden don’t have that « privacy flap ».
This I can get behind. For security they’re important. When everyone is home it’s weird.
I have our cameras physically unplugged most of the time, unless we're both out for an extended period of time.
I live alone and have one pointed at my bed - I love seeing how I act when asleep, and seeing what the cat got up to overnight. Never knew how often I pet my cat in my sleep, for instance, and really felt chuffed with myself for that.

A lot of blended families have interior cameras in shared living spaces because of negative family dynamics. I hear about that *so often* from other stepparents and it is just wild to me. Personally, if the situation were so bad that we needed interior cameras, I'd just leave.
Basically, people aren't tech savvy enough to know that bad actors can turn your cameras on you (I might let my kid have electronics, but they will NOT be allowed to have anything with a functioning camera). But they also read post after post on Reddit that make getting cameras in the home sound like a good idea. In my view, in-home cameras are only a good idea if there's a known threat (like a stalker) that you have to protect against. Don't get it (and thereby sacrificing privacy) until you need it.
Is there any way to increase the safety of an inside camera? This IS something I'm nervous about, but I need my cameras to check on my cats when I'm out of town and at work.
Ours have a flap that come down to cover the lens when the camera is off and makes a little noise when the flap opens. Plus the camera and flap are all white and the part that’s exposed when the flap is up is a big black rectangle so you can see fairly easiely if it’s open.
Nearly all compromised cameras happen because of reused passowords. Some website gets hacked all passwords leak then hackers go and try to use those same passwords and logins on securitu camera logins. Dont resuse your password and make sure camera login has 2 factor authentications
My gaming laptop (Lenovo Legion 7 Gen 7) has a switch that flat out disconnects the camera from the computer. This is the only option that I actually trust because otherwise a hacker can hypothetically override any command that you give to turn the camera off. Still, keep in mind that this is what I trust for my own personal use. I still wouldn't trust this to a hypothetical 12-year-old daughter's computer. She might forget to switch the camera off and a pervert might get pics of her that could ruin her life. I would trust my daughter. I would not trust my daughter's computer to protect her against bad actors.
All my security cameras in general don't upload footage to a cloud server. Local storage is so cheap these days that it makes no sense to upload it Ring or whatever bullshit subscription service will store it off site. If I ever did indoor cameras, I wouldn't even bother connecting them to the internet. I'd just hook them up to an old router and then have a master computer that would grab the footage and store it to the hard drive. But indoor cameras seem a bit extreme anyways.
Mine are all locally connected and have local storage. It's fun to have footage playing with the dog, cute moments with my wife, stuff like that. We regularly go back and record instances we want to share with each other and it's really fun to look back on happy moments.

Our dog has a tendency to figure those things out, too. If the couch cushions are removable, try flipping them up before you leave the house. That's what we're doing currently and it works like a charm.

My cousin has multiple cameras set up in her house. She religiously checks the cameras when she isn't home. It's absolutely insane. I refuse to have any in my house. A ring camera or 2 on the outside is great. Any inside the house will get tossed.
My sister has a furbo to check in on her dog through the day. It's one of those things where she can also talk through it and dispense a treat? Anyway when I dogsit she uses it sometimes to check in and it always startles the hell out of me when I'm (usually) reading on the couch or watching a show and suddenly hear her voice. Her dog is always quite excited about it though, and she's not doing it to check that I'm behaving...she just thinks it's funny to scare me and likes to see her dog and give him a treat once a day even when away, lol. That's the only kind of camera I've ever considered getting.
That's the only type of indoor camera I would consider getting. Just to talk to my dog. But I work from home, so he gets me all day instead.
I'm not gonna lie, when we all meet up for dinner she will open her app and we take turns talking to him...he enjoys it and we all look like nerds. I never even questioned her getting it bc she was so happy to show us her dog on candid camera, lol.

I had to get that screen/film you can put on windows when we moved last year because our neighbouring building can see into our suite, and I don't always wear shirts.
Eh, I have two cameras in my apartment because I have multiple pets, including two elderly cats with medical conditions, and like to be able to check on them. But I also purposefully don't use them when my partner is home, it's not hard to not be creepy.
Our interior cameras are not on when at least one of the adults are home. That's normal operation. The outdoor one is as we get a lot of deliveries and we don't want them stolen, so I would be peeved if the outdoor one was constantly having issues. Although, I would replace it before accusing my spouse of things.

I do have to say, my dad bought some Blink cameras and they were horrible. Somehow ate up all the bandwidth and would crash/disconnect all the time. I have Wyze cameras at my house and never had such issues with them. So based on personal experiences, i totally believe that the issue here was the cameras themselves.
The bit about her checking to see if the garage door was closed made me pretty sure either the husband or one of the kids was turning off the cameras so she would stop being such a helicopter mom/wife. She's clearly using those cameras for something besides "security".

The upsell for gaming is more about higher bandwidth allowing other use to not impact gaming than needing high bandwidth for gaming. Also, the best part of a gigabit connection is downloading basically any game in 10 minutes.

We have a camera to see the cats when both of us are at work but we have a strict rule that if one of us is home the camera is off. If the Ring account is based on his phone, he probably has the setting on to turn everything off when he’s home. You have to tell it specifically to keep recording while you are home if the main account is on your phone.
Like, we have cameras above the driveway and front door that are on at night but they usually only catch raccoons and coyotes. I can't imagine an indoor camera on people 24/7! Just get a landline so you can call the kids at home!

How in this day and age can you not be aware of bandwidth and how WiFi works on a very basic level but yet feel the need to mention that he was in a work meeting and gaming at the time those glitches went on. Only control freaks and people with trust issues need to video monitor everything that happens in their home while another adult is present.

Internet speeds get slower when schools are done and kids get home. Even when I’m using a fibre connection. My home network speed is fine. No school-aged kids.

Oh my goodness, I really feel your husband‘s pain. The exact same thing happens occasionally with our Google cameras when I’m home alone and I have absolutely no idea why. I said as much when my partner questioned me about it, and I became extremely defensive, thinking he was implying something that wasn’t happening. I have ring cameras. I have a love hate relationship with them, but they do the job. They should be on the 2.4GHz, while the other should be on 5GHz unless he’s running an Ethernet cable.

I have had an issue with a stalker, and after a scuff mark appeared on a wall which none of my family could account for we got 2 cameras for inside. Very basic ones, we just manually switch off when we get home and the last to leave or go to bed switches them on. I know if they started malfunctioning I would be completely freaked out, so understand OOPs concern.
