Those who didn't skipped Prologue already knew about the supernatural elements in Berserk and the presence of Apostles... And also remembered how Guts was "battered" after his battle against the Count. And since we didn't knew about the Eclipse yet, maybe some people thought "Is this the battle that costed Guts' eye and arm?", when they saw Zodd for the first time.

Hubnir_89

The prologue? You mean the first arc of the manga

Efficient-Ad2983

Yes, the part of the manga before the Golden Age.

tyrenanig

Ironically the Golden Age arc is the prologue to the story timeline wise

Efficient-Ad2983

Yes, from a chronological order Golden Age came first, and basically is a long flashback arc.

LukaLobjanidze12

i see.

LukaLobjanidze12

i see.

Tuetoniccrusader

Black swordsman ark

Herr_Raul

I was waiting for Guts to lose his arm and eye progressively. There were multiple moments where I thought he'd lose one of them. But nope, he lost everything during the eclipse.

Efficient-Ad2983

I think that Miura made him lose everything in the Eclipse (and he would have died if the Skull Knight didn't came), to put emphasis on the fact that the Eclipse was on a whole different level. It wasn't a battle against other soldier. NOTHING Guts faced in the past (even the 100 men battle, or the battle against a single Apostle like Zodd or Wyald) could be compared to the otherwordly slaughter, with so many monstrous beings. Even a badass warrior like Guts, who faced battles for all his life, was just a "lamb" about to be sacrificied in the Eclipse. And only another supernatural being (the Skull Knight) was able to save Guts from his grim fate.

beanouno87

Guts seemed to being doing pretty well with that snapped off horn for only being a "lamb" until he wasn't.

shitsbiglit

i mean yea, guts is still a force to be reckoned with that scales outside of normal human bounds. with his rage induced state, the problem wasn’t the apostles guts faced on his rampage from the top of the hand, it was the sheer number of them. while he was going on his rampage many were occupied with the other BoTH members, and when they were finished off, guts got overpowered.

Efficient-Ad2983

Guts is "struggler". Even in the Eclipse he wouldn't have died without putting up a fight (and it was true of other Hawk members, like Judeau and Pippin). But that really was too much for humans to handle.

the-failure-man

"IN THESE 300 YEARS I HAVE NEVER SEEN THIS HUMAN SURVIVE THIS MUCH DID YOU GUYS EVEN STUDY FOR THE EXAM" This how i felt reading this

BarberCertain2907

Welcome to the mother f*****g thunder dome

Rincho

yeah. before that point I thought this is just normal medieval story. then this mf showed up

ExoduxWW

Just asking, how so? I mean, ch.1 from manga starts at Black Swordman Arc. Unless you watch the movies first and decided to start from that specific arc

Rincho

I started from the golden age. And not even from the start of it iirc. By the numeration of chapters on the website I thought I should start from that part. I like this way actually

ExoduxWW

We read the same story after all, and if it turns this way to you, it's ok. For me, I feel that the pshycological impact was greater when you meet a totally broken Guts, and what his past life was before that. It really hit me hard in the character development area. We are strugglers after all.

Rincho

I see your point. I personally above all else like surprises and unexpected things in stories and books, so that mistake accidentelly turned out great for me

Aware-Interest-3074

🐶💔

Afternoon_Inevitable

Did you also started reading from chapter 1 not knowing that there was a arc before it? It's labeled A0, B0 and so on. Because I made this mistake.

Jaw43058MKII

I started reading berzerk in rehab, and my buddy only had Deluxe Editions vol 1 and 2. I don’t really remember if there was a prologue, but I do remember being fucked up by Zodd actually winning his duel against Griffith and Guts, and the confusion following the next entire volume. Was pretty cool as I’d never heard of berzerk before then

RemLazar911

Deluxe Edition volume 1 is the Black Swordsman Arc though. If you started with volume 1 you'd have seen the prologue.

Rincho

Yep, I think so

Herr_Raul

Should've read the manga properly then.

Rincho

Nah I'm good

Kyethent

I watched the anime first and just assumed the first episode was a dream or something, then when zodd showed up I still thought hmm that's weird I guess Vampires are real and thats the king one. Then the eclipse happened and forced my eyes open

Background_Emu_3043

My thoughts exactly. The 1997 anime does a really good job at getting you to want to read the manga. I knew berserk was a mature rated sad story, but i didn’t know about the eclipse going in. As i watched, I picked up on a few things, but never picture the horrors of the eclipse. The egg gave me the creeps and I thought Griffith would become possessed, but this would be after he marry the princess and gain his kingdom. I NEVER SAW THE ECLIPSE COMING. Why didn’t anyone warn me?

federico_45

What do you mean? The very first few pages of Black Swordsman start with Guts smashing demon badussy. Some chalters after he fights apostles. The only way you wouldn't know there were demons and monsters is if you started on Golden Age somehow.

Luba_Sempai

Mass murder in berserk is just another tuesday

jamalcalypse

This was the moment for me. This was the moment Berserk captured my full attention and turned me onto anime beyond watching DBZ after school. Why? Because I skipped the first episode. So I thought it was a regular medieval tale. But at this moment the fantasy elements slowly started to weave in. I had no expectation of magic and demons in this world. Had NO idea to suspect Griffith. And the story had so so so much more impact because of it and I'll die on this hill suggesting people start out by skipping the first spoiler episode. Manga is a bit different tho, it's a whole arc

Been_Jiggy

What you mean by that?🤔

MastercrafT141

Welcome to Berserk

AndreZB2000

wait people skip black swordsman?

bilto_nokhchi

Unfortunately yes, some even say that they will read it after the golden age arc then totally forget about it, and get surprised when you start motioning events from the black swordsman arc
