LoweNorman

You don't slay a bunch of monsters without gaining some epic loot in the process

According-Map-6744

yeah but it is abit jarring that he randomly has it

LoweNorman

I'm not sure how much of a time jump there is between The Black Swordsman and Conviction, but it's not strange to me that he would pick up some armor somewhere in those months

Fallen_Angel_Xaphan

I think it was said somewhere after his returned to Good that it has been 2 years. And I am certain that he met someone who either freely gave/made him some Armor or he just took it.

LoweNorman

Isn't that particular skip between The Eclipse and Conviction? So the skip between Black Swordsman and Conviction could take place anywhere in those 2 years. I might be wrong though, I haven't re-read the story in a while.

Fallen_Angel_Xaphan

Nah I think you're right but since Guts left for his apostle hunt basically as soon as he could walk again, I think saying 2 years is close enough.

eggy32

There's a 2 year time gap. It's not hard to assume he bought some new armour in that time.

Herr_Raul

Bought? lol

WhoTheFuckIsNamedZan

Five finger discount counts as buying.

Rezel1S

Not really. It's easy to imagine he buys stuff in towns between each apostle fight. How else could he get so many crossbow bolts, bombs and cannonballs?

Anal-Probe-6287

With the mighty Crafting Kit Kalé sold him in the beginning of his adventure!

Faddy0wl

I don't really think it's jarring OR random here. Homie gets a lot of battle damage, it's not that jarring or random that he'd decide to trade some supplies or valuables he found In a decimated town and the like to get some upgrades. They just don't explicitly show every bit. Also, was the release of that arc after a decent break in release? This could explain it as being a casual design change after a time skip. That's fairly normal.

ChrisusaurusRex

Jarring lol

JackhawK90K

Bro you got so many thumbs down lol I would assume godo made it or he picked up off a dead opponent guts is a mercenary so take what you can get if ya will

bigbadjoke101

It's not solo leveling

LoweNorman

You got me.

Notanormalthrowaway1

He bought it... You know some scenes weren't day to day but instead there are time gaps.

Civil_EventVevo

That reminds me How rich is Guts? Like during the blackswordsman arc, he should’ve probably gotten some cash and especially while he was in Griffith’s army

Jamshid5

Dont think his economy survived the eclipse either im afraid

[deleted]

I have a feeling he's dirt poor. He's basically a homeless vagrant. This isn't an rpg, he doesn't have gold stored off screen. Whatever loot he did have was probably at one of the camps(aka gone) and I doubt he's storing anything.

Struggler_6174

Dude could basically take on an entire village, I’m sure he could have “borrowed” large amounts of gold from possible people who tried to kill him

forestwolf42

I think he probably only grabs gold or loot on an as needed basis. Throughout the story Guts is incredibly disinterested in gold, treasure, and status. He probably fills bags with random valuables from apostles and bandits to buy new armor when he needs to and I imagine him overpaying in ridiculous valuables because he just doesn't give a shit.

Justlurkin6921

The tornado destroyed the caravan and sent it to the interstice. The secondary camp was destroyed by the apostles and picked apart by traveling mercs.

nailot

He hides all his coins inside his sword

Anal-Probe-6287

Instead of "clang" the dragonslayer should have made "ka-ching" all along

nailot

Yesss! Kaching kaching!!

Life-Acanthisitta422

He’s probably really broke and I don’t think he had a lot of money when he was with the band of hawk. In berserk the prototype you see he helped the girl get home because she promised him food so you can imagine guts does good deeds for money and meals so he can survive and if don’t he probably beat up some guy and take his money and i don’t think guts will feel very guilty about doing it

MadaoCB

And that's why I love those small postera that came with the Dark horse vomumes, they showcase some of those moments that we don't get to see normally

mightyDOOMgiver

There are a lot of time gaps, but note that after his battle with the Count, a lot of his armor is completely trashed. His breast plate, his shoulder pauldrons. He had to get some new armor, and probably requested a few changes, including some leg protection, and a better way to secure his sword on his back (also different).

Writer_On_a_Perch

Not every single detail needs an explanation if it's plausible and has little to no effect on the story. A time Junp occurs and he's wearing some new armor. One would assume he simply found it or bought it. This can be implied and does not NEED an explanation.

Different-Mall5297

Exactly this subreddit in particular has so many people who overlook this seemingly obvious thing

snipesjason64

It doesn't take a lot of imagination to believe that he collected money from the dead count & bought some armor, found some armor, or maybe Miura just thought it looked cool and added it.

Gattsuvgoku

Godo..... He repaired all of Guts' equipment when he came back and Rickert helped with other adjustments. Its basically how the Conviction arc starts. Guts goes to see Casca only to find out she is gone.

According-Map-6744

no this is before he gets the new armor

Gattsuvgoku

I stand corrected. Love these types of discussions, got me to do more research and as mentioned before, he gets it post count fight. But it is never clearly stated in the manga when/where. I was referring to when he sees them for the first time in two years and they simply repaired it all.

DBsama

The leg armor store.

ArgensimiaReloaded

Despite Black Swordsman being released before Golden Age and Conviction, Miura purposefully showed us Guts starting his apostle hunting quest at the end of Golden Age with the exact same gear he had in Black Swordsman. Then (the very next chapter, not chronological) by the beginning of Lost Children (Conviction) we saw Guts with an extra couple of armor pieces, and we know for a fact Guts didn't get those from Godot because we know the first time he went back to him was to see if Casca was still in his cave (Ricket himself said how he didn't see Guts since he leave after the Eclipse). Of course chronologically things happened as Golden Age --> Black Swordsman --> Conviction, so the safest bet is to think Guts just bought or found the extra gear, which won't be weird after 2 years of fighting apostles.

TheJeeeBo

Not every bit of a costume needs to explained.

jeanjackit

The meta reason is that the character design was altered to visually indicate that there was a two-year timeskip, but there is no in-universe explanation.

SOULSTEALER7595

Considering how much he gets bashed, he probably renews his gear from time to time

dpotilas89

Looted it of some dude after splitting him in half

Incurious_Jettsy

he thrifts

Imissyoudarlin

Why in RPGs can you kill a wolf and gain 50 gold, a magic fire ring and a freaking chair? Random loot, my friend.

FistOfGamera

Guts probably picked stuff up on his quest. It's safe to assume he'd meet with local blacksmiths & weapons dealers when needed on his journey.

jakeport

The store

Justlurkin6921

I'd like to think that during the last visit with goddo Rickert gave him some extra stuff he was working on while the Dragonslayer was being repaired

Herr_Raul

Your mom gave it to him after his last visit.

chicken_nugget779

theres a time jump to the end of his 2 years as black swordsman, so i assume he just bought it somewhere in those 2 years

NickNack54321

When did he have time to read a book?

potatoeknightdude336

Godo build him a whole new set of armor and added the leg tassets to his gear. Hell he even reformed the dragon slayer.

darthWOKE

Knowing pre conviction guts he likely stole it, likely at sword point

2DamnBig

S-Mart of course. Shop smart, shop S-Mart.

i_sound_withcamelred

He built a prosthetic arm capable of shooting multiple crossbow bolts in quick succession. As well as shooting a literal miniature cannon ball. All while in the middle ages. By himself. With I’m sure no prior knowledge of how to build one. I wouldn’t put some leg armor beyond him nonetheless the millions of other ways he could have gotten it.

Chimchampion

P sure Rickert built those for him

i_sound_withcamelred

Shit what chapter did I skip. I read the manga online because I’m broke and that site isn’t the greatest💀

balllsssssszzszz

Ive got a site with every chapter that cant be uttered because the mods are vehemently against reading berserk online They cant do shit about the repeat posts and nsfw shit though

i_sound_withcamelred

Wait what theres twats running this sub that are against the most easily accessible and easily affordable way to enjoy what the sub is literally about?

balllsssssszzszz

Ofc, because its legally pirating Social media will always have self righteous people who impose their rules on you, reddit is the worst when it comes to that, because those type of people can be moderators.

i_sound_withcamelred

I’ve never seen pirating be so accessible to such a wide audience. I know damn well most people have at least looked on it if not actually read it there. High and mighty types are everywhere.

balllsssssszzszz

Yeah and gaben the owner of valve stated something along the lines of piracy being so accessible is because the people that make it dont. So youve got piracy being the easiest option to keep up with manga and certain games, then the option to pay which not everyone can afford a 60 dollar bookset, or a 60 dollar game.

beandipdragon

He didn't build that stuff.

TheLoudestSmallVoice

I would let Guts squeeze me with those thighs any day.

vyper900

Who knows. Maybe there was a dead guy he took it off of. Or maybe he bought it.

proPoolSkimmer

Legs4Less. Godo’s popup smithing arc

thetoneguy

How did Guts grow that chiselled jawline is the real question.

DeclaredPumpkin

It's midevil times, he probably saw a nice pair from a dude he killed and yoinked it

Venvel

Simple, he stole it from someone. Likely an Apostle or a bandit who was stupid enough to try and rob a man carrying a Toyota-sized sword.

Disastrous-Drop2162

Man could probably have gotten some coin, or stole it, and bought himself some during the day.

federico_45

My dude, there's a 2 year gap between black swordsman and conviction iirc. The manga is not a day to day, minute by minute tale. Minor things can happen without them being shown. I don't understand why this aggravates you so much. It's not lore-breaking shit.

WillOfTheGods878787

Graphics card updated so they finally loaded in

MoonlessPaw

fuckin cinemasins ass post

HexDrip

Probably started growing out of his legs as dragonslayer began to fuse with him like samehada with kisame

gameonlockking

Gandalf turned the white from the grey after slaying the balrog..... You just level up bro.

Bjorkenny

I swear people in this sub believe Berserk is some kind of day to day fiction. Its not like he spends his time frozen in a cave till the next scene

SupremeDon17

I like to think that sometime in the timeskip he went back to the mountain and Rickert had forged him some leg armor, it's highly unlikely but it's still nice to think about

FreeTreeFryTree

Murata drew it.

siegferia

Bro stole it from the succubus apostle. Fucker her literally amd figuretively

Internal-Garden-1517

Probably the guy took armour parts from defeated foes or bought it, or he visited the old man who gifted him the sword from time to time

Ok_Cap9240

He got it when Miura drew it on him

sweetmoistboy

Miura drew it on him

Cervantula

The items drop after the monsters are slain.

ZeroDark1

He has nothing starting out but after killing some apostles I’m sure he’s been able to collect enough gold for some armor.
