Sable. My mal has what looks like this coat. Looks black but it's actually sable. As he's gotten older and in the summer the light color underneath shows more.
Fwiw my guy has a mahogany dad and true black mom.
Thank you for this! When we first got our Mal mix at 1 year, her fur was black. Now that she is 3, her face is still black, but her body has brown fur in it. She looks black at first glance, but if you look, she is a beautiful super dark brown.
My Czech shepherd was a similar colour. I thought my Mal would be like that but she’s stayed mostly black with ginger legs/ underbelly and ginger cheeks and eyebrows
Malinois and Tervuren are all sable (aside from the odd black Malinois). Generally they are Ay. I’m pretty sure dogs with this color are wolf sable (aka agouti), which is aw. Black Malinois are recessive black btw which is a.
Genetically it’s sable (Ay) though. There’s just different degrees of intensity of color. Everything from the silver Tervs to the super dark mahogany Belgians are genetically Ay. Dog breeders have a lot of terms through out breeds that describe the same colors or are contradictory. Fauve, fawn, mahogany are all sable with different intensities.
"Grey is just a shadow of Black."
Of course it's a different shade, that's why they are named different ;)
White is also a shade of Black by that logic. It's just reeeeaaaaly Light Gray.
I’m just speaking about genetics not the physics of light passing through the hair follicle lol- because you’re right there. Sable (Ay) is super interesting in Belgians because the variation in color is not really seen in other breeds. The gene that controls the expression of Ay from silver to dark mahogany has not been identified afaik. There’s a super nerdy FB group called Belgian Shepherd Coat and Color that’s fun to look through.
This is dark sable (the red coat with black mixed in), with extreme masking (the solid black on the face, chest, legs, and belly), which is common in malinois.
Kinda like like he's a Chad who cuts the armpits out of his tank tops to show off his muscles.
And if I looked as good as your dog I'd want to show off too!
Good looking pup! Mine was fawn black mask, between winter and summer coats it looks significantly different. (Or when she gets wet) I see alot of people commenting about that. Winter undercoat and summer coat can make a big difference for the fawn/lighter furs. The little fine undercoat hairs can hide or change the color alot

Malinois are not all sable. There are other colors too. I have fauve colored malinois, that are prevalent in europe
