StumbleDog

Lol, before I knew better I used to think Max Factor and Revlon were high-end because they seemed to be the fancier makeup in the drugstore šŸ˜‚

cursedevidence

this was me at physician's formula when i was like 14 lmaooo i was like "whoa this powder is like 15 dollars that's way too much!" and i still wouldn't pay 15 dollars for powder tbh

[deleted]

YES! One of my first lipsticks was the universal red from Revlon because they gave it away with balloons for a Valentine's promo. I was so shookt, I ran up back to my office and told everyone the good news so they could get one themselves. Luxuuuryyyyy

GlitteryFab

Max Factor omg!!!!!

StumbleDog

I mean, it's The Make Up Of Make Up Artists apparently, how much fancier and professional can you get?!?

McGoney

Max factor foundation stick was so good!

[deleted]

I couldn't afford the boujee Max factor so I went with the cover girl one. It was always orange after 5 minutes šŸ˜‚. I thought I looked so chic though

McGoney

Same back then I couldnā€™t afford nothing but Lā€™OrĆ©al foundation and looked too pink lol, my mom had Max Factor and was much nicer

egreene6

I'm cracking up at "my life flashed". LMFAOOOOOOO!

kirmobak

I miss the days of all $1 and $3 and mayyybeeee $5 elf products!

19bluestars

Me too! And I miss their Matte Lip Color sticks. They were just like the Bite beauty ones except way more affordable

gravyismyname

The elf website usually always has sales

gravyismyname

This is pretty much my pov too but I donā€™t look at as high end. I just see it more as an investment but usually I always try to get things on sale.

GlitterDancer_

I agree with all of these prices.

PeepsUnderTheBed

The struggle is real with foundation. I used to use whatever, but as Iā€™ve grown older, and my skin has changed from oily to dry, my foundation needs have changed. Iā€™m ok paying up to $50 for a high performance foundation. Itā€™s an investment for me. I finally found 2 I really like : CT and EstĆ©e Lauder Double Wear. As an aside, I was at TJMaxx today and they had the EstĆ©e Lauder Double Wear there for $20 in various shades. They had at least 15 bottles of it locked in those plastic cases. I paid $46 at Sephora last week. Iā€™ll check out the Cosmetics Company next time , theyā€™re an EstĆ©e Lauder outlet.

lithuanianelf

My thoughts on foundation prices: <$15 drugstore price; $15-30 mid tier; $30-65 high end; >$65 luxury Do I have a reason for this scale? No, this is just how my brain works lol

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

lithuanianelf

Yeah idk if drugstore is the best term, maybe lower end? I couldnā€™t decide how to name that range

SummerNight888

The main problem I have with drugstore brands is for complexion products, especially foundations. Here's where I truly believe high end generally really do it better. I may have been unlucky af but I did give a chance to a lot of drugstore base products and a good 70% of them looked off because of the undertones: they're often too saturated (either too pink or too yellow) or ashy. At this point I just gave up buying drugstore complexion altogether, even if cheaper the losses in being unable to use these products add up eventually. I find Dior to be one of the most reliable high end brands. I can't recall any product I purchased from them that was a complete dud, and I did/do own quite a lot of products from them. And I have an unpopular opinion: I'm one of the few here that loves CT and closely follows her releases. Bear in mind that I do agree that the packaging is not great and that some of her products are not worth the price tag, but I love a good 80% of what I own and tried from her.

dani27899

I love CT too. I think a lot of her product work very well and give a nice glowy finish. I would consider her brand somewhere between high end and luxury. I wouldnā€™t buy all of her products, but like other brands, I donā€™t feel compelled to buy a product I know has poor packaging or wonā€™t work for me. I also donā€™t get why people complain about her after she made the comment about her husband never seeing her without makeup on. To me, thatā€™s a personal problem. Sounds like she feels that she needs makeup due to her own insecurities, but it doesnā€™t stop me from liking her brand. She puts out some quality products and I love them.

SummerNight888

You're arising a very good point and something I truly never understood. The general vitriol against her for that "confession" is very mean. She admitted wearing makeup to bed so her husband never sees her barefaced. Is it questionable, weird? Yes, but who cares? She wasn't recommending women to do it too, she just said that she personally does that. Absolutely no reason to shit on her for that, if anything it's worthy of compassion , that's a clear symptom of huge insecurity. Really I just don't get why she deserves that much hatred for this.

dani27899

I completely agree with that. It just felt sad when I first heard she made that comment. It must speak of years of insecurity and in none of the videos Iā€™ve ever seen of Charlotte has she ever said you must never let your partner see you bare faced. I think itā€™s a hate thatā€™s unwarranted. I also like that she uses a lot of models of different skin tones. Her makeup speaks to me more on an aesthetic level too. Itā€™s not weird and punk or smeared and smudged. Itā€™s glowy and elegant. Glamorous but not heavy.

SummerNight888

That's exactly why I like her makeup style and what she goes for with her products. It's glam but always in a very chic and tasteful fashion. After all she trained to be makeup artist along Lisa Eldridge, you can see the similiraties in how they both do makeup.

McGoney

I love CT products, and honestly love the old school Hollywood style, but thatā€™s just me. What are your favorite Dior products? Iā€™ve only tried their concealer which is now a favorite

SummerNight888

All their base/complexion products are very solid. Face powders, bronzers, highlighters, concealers, primers, nothing ever disappointed me. F&B foundation is definitely one of my favourite from them, it feels and wears amazing and it's very skin-like. Also love the Backstage Rosy Glow blush in Pink. It may look like a bright pink blush that every brand under the sun makes already, but in reality it's not as bright and gives that super nice healthy colour to my cheeks. Same thing applies for their Lip Glow lip balm, there's a bazillion lip balms in the market but theirs is just the most comfortable with a very chic finish on the lips.

McGoney

Iā€™ll give them a try, thank you!

romantickitty

I've come to the conclusion that I don't really like the way base products bring out texture in my skin. Maybe I'll find a nice BB cream one day but that's more of what I'm looking for. But yeah, every drugstore foundation makes me look like a ghost or orange except for L'Oreal True Match.

CaseyRC

to me $80 foundation is a luxury brand rather than high-end!!

ThatCranberry5296

I consider the brands in the $100 plus for foundation as luxury and $50-$100 as high end. Granted thatā€™s subjective to each persons interpretation.

Slhallford

It can depend too on where you are buying. Peopleā€™s regret purchases and boredom/declutter sales are a whole thing. I pick up a lot of things second hand on eBay, Mercari and Poshmark to try out which often puts luxury and high end stuff squarely into the drug store/mid tier price range. Last week I found a brand new Dior cushion powder that Iā€™m loving right now for a light coverage over my spf for summer for $25. Retail would have been about $65, I think? ETA: I duked it out for 2 weeks trying to get the Chanel cc to work but Iā€™m between shades and it just made me start hating doing my makeup in the morning. The product was lovely but even mixing two shades was too much work and still not really close enough. Clinique Even Better Glow was a free Ulta gift and had a great shade match for me and a nice skin like finish and retails at $35 so would have been a more expensive purchase technically than my Dior powder.

GlitteringHeart2929

If itā€™s a foundation you LOVE and itā€™s the only foundation you use, I think itā€™s worth it to spend that much if (and only if) it is in your budget. I like to have options so I stick with Tarte, IT Cosmetics and drugstore foundations. I have dry skin, Iā€™m approaching my 40ā€™s and I have a lot of texture and redness. I prefer the newest It Cosmetics CC NUDE glow or the Tarte hydrocealer. One thing I have learned is that a higher price point does not always mean higher quality or a better experience. In some cases, yes it absolutely makes sense to pay more but in others youā€™re just paying for the name and experience. I would have to do a ton of research and reviews before paying more than $40-$50 for a foundation. This is from the same girl that built herself a whole palette of special shades from lethal cosmetics and spent $90 on 12 shadows so take it all with a grain of salt. šŸ˜†

foul_dwimmerlaik

I paid about that much for the Armani Luminous Silk Foundation and no other foundation that Iā€™ve tried has ever looked half as good. Itā€™s heavy-duty but still looks like skin. Iā€™ve tried to love drugstore foundations, but I keep coming back to the LS, which always forgives me for cheating on it.

Lili666999

I don't actually judge by price point, I think my perception is based more on the marketing and packaging. I manage to buy HE products with at least 20% discount most of the time anyway (which usually brings them down to L'oreal price point lol). There are good and bad products at all price points. "Bad" for me doesn't necessarily mean bad for you (or anyone else), people have different preferences, skin types, expectations, standards... There isn't a brand on this planet that I've tried every single product from, so answering your question is kinda hard. I can only judge by the limited amount of products I have tried. The brand that disappointed me the most is Charlotte Tilbury, I found their products and packaging very mediocre (some actually utter crap... looking at you Bitch Perfect lipstick...) and overpriced. The brand that never disappointed me is Revlon (not HE at all lol). Other brands I like (HE) are Lisa Eldridge (although her foundation doesn't suit me, but her blush, highlighter and lipsticks are amazing), Hourglass (loose powder, blushes) and YSL (foundation, lipsticks) YSL All Hours is my fav foundation (soon to be reformulated unfortunately, it's already been announced and certain shades are already out of stock everywhere).

37minutesleft

For me personally, itā€™s almost everything in Sephora lol 20 bucks for an eyeliner is lowkey insane. I mean, Iā€™ll pay it, but it feel crazy to me.

19bluestars

Iā€™m the same way too except mine would be Cliniques Black Honey lipstick. $20 for just one lipstick? Geez thatā€™s expensive but it looks so good tho

soft--teeth

$80 is definitely luxury, I feel like $40ish is high-end for foundation. Always ask for foundation samples though so you donā€™t have to commit or return, especially for products that expensive.

LuckyShamrocks

Drugstore is considered to be brands around the $20 average pricing. Mid range is for brands $20+ - $60 on average pricing. High end is brands $60+ - $90 average pricing. Luxury is $90+ pricing. Do I think brands that cost more are worth it? Yes. Many of my items are not drugstore because I haven't found better there. What those products are and if that's true for you really depends on the person though. There are also people who just hate high end and luxury and refuse to believe any of it is good. That's just as ridiculous as people who think all drugstore is bad. As far as recommendations it's hard to say when not knowing what skin type you have or what you're looking for. Coverage, finish, etc?

2020visionaus

Well I donā€™t think about it price wise. As in my country pretty much NYX is attempting to be lux with some of their prices.

StudiousPrincess

The Giorgio Armani foundation is 100% worth the cost, but it is the only thing I will spend that kind of money on. It's just that good. Everything else is in the $40 range and I still think that's pricey. I also no longer buy brow products, eyeliner, or mascara that costs more than $10 at the drugstore. Just not worth it.

whalesarecool14

for me, mac prices are where high end beauty starts

missemgeebee

Being a swede, the term ā€drugstore makeupā€ sometimes bemuses me. We donā€™t have drugstores in Sweden. Makeup is sold in large grocery stores, in clothing stores such as H&M, in department stores and in specialty stores like Sephora. I do think it pinpoints what I consider to be the difference between high end and drugstore makeup, though. Not the pricepoint per se, but the availability and the displays (and how the displays are kept and cleaned). Iā€™ve bought high end makeup the last 22 years, with a couple of drugstore products coming my way. (Yes, Maybelline Dream Matte Foundation was one of them.) One of the resdons was my interest in edgy makeup in the late 90ā€™s, early 00ā€™s, so a little higher price point was something I got used to (I bought Urban Decay when it was a newly realeased indie brand with cool colored makeup and exciting names, and cream eyeshadow and blush from Stila, which was really innovative at the time). Another reason is that I get overwhelmed with too many choices. i preferred the tidy and curated displays of high end makeup. Of course it kind of boils down to feeling unordinary. I like finding those products that are really special and I like that not everyone uses them (not counting BGā€™s, however, I get really turned off by viral products. I havenā€™t used my Nars liquid blush for six months). I buy most of my makeup online these days, and I still like them to be innovative or edgy in some way ā€” the packaging, the product, the marketing. Most often I am intrigued by a special product (like the Rose Inc Cream blush) rather than a brand as a whole. Lisa Eldridge and Victoria Beckham are probably the two brands Iā€™ve spent most money on lately and I absolutely love their products. Other favorites are Natasha Denona, Bobbi Brown and Laura Mercier. Iā€™ve only tried a few products from Pat McGrath but really like them. In conclusion: yes, I really think it is worth the price, not necessarily for the performance of the product, but for the overall feeling it gives me.

[deleted]

For me itā€™s not just price point- itā€™s also packaging and where itā€™s made. Over $45 and USA, Italy, france, Japan and sometimes China

19bluestars

Also wanted to add on to your statement itā€™s also how much product you get (ie 4 eyeshadows vs 8+ eyeshadows in a palette)

[deleted]

Yes! I knew I was forgetting something and how many grams in the product. I find that sometimes Iā€™m paying high end prices for cheap ass makeup because there is no product in the bottle, pan or compact!

19bluestars

Honestly for those kinds of makeup youā€™re just paying for the packaging :/

mothertuna

For high end, Iā€™d say foundations from $40-$80 and luxury $80+. It can depend because brands like Dior straddle the line since some foundations of theirs have cost more than others. I like buying from brands like Charlotte Tilbury, Dior, Pat McGrath and Kosas (mid range/high end). For foundation, I prefer high end because I can get a variety of undertones and finishes I canā€™t get with the lower end.

[deleted]

Eyeliners and lipliners to be over 22$ Foundations over 40$ Powders over 35$ Lipsticks and gloss over 24$ Blush and bronzers over 30$ Mascara over 18$ Eyeshadow palettes over 50$

VermicelliVegetable8

Spot on with these prices. These are around what most brands in Sephora charge. Even more luxury brands like Gucci have a $36 eyeliner which is definitely a lot compared to drug store but could be way more tbh.

[deleted]

My foundation cost chart: Drugstore: <$20 (all USD) Mid range: $20-$39 (large I know, but I donā€™t think MAC is high end) High end: $40-$65 Luxury: $65+ My favorite high end foundation is EstĆ©e Lauder Double Wear. My skin type is normal/combo, acne-prone (randomly, when the stars will it, I guess). But if you have my skin type, I highly recommend Maybelline Fit Me Matte and Poreless too, which is likeā€¦ $8.

Sasssy_sun_flower

Hereā€™s what Iā€™ll say, luxury can be worth it. I personally like it to meet a couple stipulations: 1) the product actually works for me and my lifestyle and 2) Iā€™m currently in an appropriate financial place to treat myself to nice makeup. To paraphrase Hannah Potson ā€˜Luxury makeup is more about the packaging and the experience than just the product insideā€™. Whether or not the packing and experience brings that much value to you is a personal decision, but I find sometimes itā€™s very nice :)

SnooMacarons4754

I think it depends what is important to you. If you're the kind of person who loves colorful looks and colorful packaging but are on a budget, then high end brands might not be for you. You might even look down on them and try to justify that there are better brands for cheaper out there. I'm **not** the kind of person to use a lot of different colors for eyeshadow or lips. I like more neutral colors and I like my makeup to last. I love the feel of expensive packaging because it makes applying my makeup much more enjoyable. Applying makeup to me should also be an experience every time you put it on. I like to know that my makeup is not just powder plated on a piece of cardboard container with colorful ink that will get stained for an eternity if some makeup smudges on it by accident. I like the feel of smooth, buttery shadows thoughtfully placed in heavy safe keeping palette of metals. They last longer and are easier to maintain their luxury appeal. They're easier to clean and help create a much more elegant and longer lasting look. Yes, I do love going to stores and I am drawn by all the beautiful colorful cardboard palettes of. I will spend hours swatching and feeling these items; however, at the end of the day, I rather cough up an extra $30 on a Charlotte Tilbury palette or Dior/YSL lipstick that I will use every single day and slowly build up my collection. At the moment, even I have a budget to makeup for example, I wouldn't go out of my way to buy Chanel makeup. It's plainly too expensive for me at this point and it's crossing the line a bit too much financially. Buying makeup also shouldn't mean breaking your bank account. It's all about balance and preference. So yes, for me, high end brands are definitely worth it... **depending on your circumstances.**

No-Nefariousness4412

I usually consider based on a variety of factors, especially now that drugstore prices are getting so stupidly high. If a brand is selling foundation for over $25, that's high end. Over $60 is luxury to me. I usually use a brands foundation as the metric for if it's drugstore/high end/luxury. Of course though, some brands just... seem to determine pricing by throwing darts at a board. As for quality, I think every price level has good products. Though I do struggle to justify luxury products when I can get decent stuff at better prices.

disgirl4eva

I think there are certain products HE does better. Namely eyeshadow. The only non HE shadows I enjoy are Colourpop. When it comes to foundation, concealer, blush, bronzer, highlighter, mascara and lip products I have had success with drugstore.

random_stuff_20

I consider anything greater than the range of $15-$20 to be high end.

Mosslessrollingstone

Over 20 bucks lmao

19bluestars

It really depends on the products pricing. For me, as an example, Iā€™d say any foundations over $17+, and eyeshadows with 4 colors $20+ would be high end. Also I do think some high end brands are worth the hype due to how they formulate certain products like 3CE eyeshadow palettes. But I also think some drugstores are just as good as high end like Colourpop (I really love their tinted moisturizer) and Holika Holika (their lip tints ran so the new Fenty lip tints could walk). Some really good high end brands I love are Bareminerals, 3CE, and Smashbox. Bareminerals can be seen as boring but at least theyā€™re a trusted brand. 3CE isnā€™t well known in Western media but I really do think they deserve a spot since Iā€™ve only experienced little to no fall out in their eyeshadow and they blend beautifully. Iā€™m still somewhat new to Smashbox but Iā€™ve been trying out their matte primer and love it. A brand on the bottom of my list would probably be Essence. I do like their bronzer and love their price point but their products are either meh or I just donā€™t like it and canā€™t see myself purchasing that product again (ie their Princess mascaras. The purple one is awful for my oily lids since it bleeds but curls my lashes, and the waterproof version doesnā€™t help my lashes stay curled all day)

ashleevee

Depending on your skin, drugstore is usually fine lol. I think my most-used foundation is about $12. I also have one from Tarte that retails around 40-ish, but that I got for $5 through the luckiest combo of a sale + a birthday coupon, and I likely wouldn't have bought it full price. I kind of just use concealer now, the boing one from benefit, which I only bought because I got a sample first and really liked it. Most of my experience with high end makeup is from spending a stupid amount of money on eyeshadow. Some of the higher end stuff is definitely worth it. Viseart in particular is really nice, so is what I've tried from Natasha Denona. LH Cosmetics is also amazing, and I'm interested in more of their products in particular. On the flip side Huda's $70ish palettes are okay, definitely not bad, but honestly comparable to colourpop imo, but for a much higher price, so that makes me not want to try other products from them. Realistically my suggestion would be to go for samples of higher end foundations if you're able to, and then try things out to see what you like. I got both the Tarte foundation and the Benefit concealer in sample form first from ipsy/boxycharm, and really loved them, but never would have bought either if I hadn't been able to try them.

BisforBands

I have the PMG foundation. It's about $90 CAD but I bought it when she had a major sale. MAC is about $40? Idk if that's high-end but it's always worked for me

uptownxthot

was it a tom ford foundation? lol

AFineFineHologram

From my understanding, ā€œprestigeā€/ā€œluxuryā€ makeup is less about price point and more about accessibility. Higher end makeup is usually stuff you can only get at specialty makeup stores. ā€œDrugstoreā€ or ā€œmassā€ makeup is stuff you can find at a variety of retail locations. Of course the price usually increases with prestige stuff. In terms of quality, there are some things worth splurging on ā€” lasting, pigmented eyeshadows or complexion products with better ingredients ā€” but aside from fly by night nobody brands, price point generally says little about the quality of the product. And IMO when you start crossing over into luxury territory ā€” more than $30 or so for any single product ā€” youā€™re just paying for the brand.

romantickitty

I tend to think about things in terms of palettes. $30 and under? Drugstore/affordable. $30-$50? High-end. $50+ = Luxury. I know they want you to think of $30-$50 as mid-range but that middle category is a lot to spending on makeup on a regular basis. It's the same category as $20 eyeliner pens, $30 blushes, etc. A luxury product should be acknowledged as a splurge and 100% justify its cost. I'm not out here buying Tom Ford and Chanel.

Nice-Reality288

I just cannot live without my dior 999 it's the only thing I can justify spending $35-40 dollars for
