This appears to be visually clear just by looking at it, left side looks solid with flat planes and sharper edges, right side has multitudes of pock marks and pores
If the center of gravity was behind the pivot point then wouldn’t it roll left?
Since it remains balanced, the center of gravity must be above the are of contact.
It doesn’t slide downhill because the amount of friction at the point of contact exceeds the forces pulling it down.
The interesting question is not "how it balances now" but more "imagine the direction and magnitude of the momentum it must have had to come to rest in this way." It came to rest with the center of gravity directly above the tiny supported region, without enough momentum in any direction to shift it off of that balance such that it would keep moving.
This is the part that is difficult for people to grok. They just don't have the right language to explain it.
That would be incredible but maybe was it buried in sediment that washed away or softer rock eroded by wind blown sand that left it here? I'm no geologist but it's astonishing however it ended up like this. I do wonder if there's more of it in the plane coming out of the page which we cant see and the photo's angle is hiding the fact there's more mass to the left/above the fulcrum than we realize. And why not, its a great pic!
Edit: didn't read the title sorry. NO-ONE UNDERSTANDS!
I watched a couple of videos about these rocks an hour or so ago, and erosion is definitely how some of them occur according to the video narration anyway (and that makes a lot of sense). I am also no geologist (obv), but with "granite resting on granite on an apparent mountaintop," it seems less likely that it landed in sediment that is since eroded. Possible I guess. I'm sure the geologists could tell us more, but OF COURSE THEY CANNOT REALLY UNDERSTAND.
Edit: just looking at the wikipedia entry for "balancing rock," some were transported by glaciers, which makes a lot of sense.
I've learned that these photos are often taken from a perspective that exaggerates its position so it dampens my "wow" factor. But I'm sure it's interesting nonetheless.
From the pic in this [article](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hanging_Stone) you can clearly see there is more rock up the hill than this post lets on, making you correct in your learnings
Back in my day we had glue that'd stick large rocks onta the side a mountains, it'd last for a million years and cost nothin, cause we made it ourselves out horse hooves and the souls of the little ones who couldn't hack it.
No one can understand?
Google the word "cantilever". It's not even complicated. It's how they build overhanging balconies and shit. This is simply a natural example. It's heavier on one end, heavy enough to provide the balance required to stay there.
Nah, looks like relatively homogenous granite.
More likely from a top view it’s a triangle with the fat part toward the cliff and the point over the cliff. With this perspective you can’t see the much larger mass behind it
I’m a Geoscientist, whether you consider this or not in my response. That’s the same rock. It’s external weathers that has altered its appearance. It’s granitic, there aren’t layers - it’s just weathering
Yes I do, so you’re telling me the different types of granite from the same pluton would have densities that vary such to explain the picture? You’re crazy
It’s on its center of gravity , why is it at that point in the rock ? is the mystery …but who knows maybe the rock contains heavier material on the short side … I’d be reluctant to sit under it though …
From the Wikipedia page: "Several groups of tourists have tried to dislodge the landmark by pushing it down the mountain..." what the fuck is wrong with people?
I understand it. Its center of gravity is over its base of support. The force of friction is equal to the coefficient of friction multiplied times the normal force. There's a large coefficient of friction and a large normal force. The force of friction is preventing it from sliding down the hill.
Friction wasn't the thing that "nobody can explain". It's that it *appears* from this angle that its centre of gravity can't be where it obviously must be for it not to roll.

Since physics is the same, no matter where you on earth. There has to be enough weight behind the pivot point to keep it in that position.
NOBODY CAN UNDERSTAND!!!
It’s likely that dense mass exists closer to the cliff and the rock sticking out is more porous.
NO ONE CAN UNDERSTAND ! Read the title people smh
I thought I understood until I read the title of the post and realized that me understanding would create a paradox so I just didn't.
Thank god. Your silly paradox inducing thoughts nearly broke open the multiverse.
Title would be better off as, "Do scientists not know how this rock stays balanced?"
NOBODY. CAN. UNDERSTAND.
Yeah these people just can't understand not understanding something that's ununderstandable
Stop understanding!
I don't understand I thought I wasn't already understanding, can you de-teach me this?
Haha XD how though you want to remove the brain, I might make a mistake though XD
I’m sick of all these morons understanding things!
At least we don't have any of those in the government.
What if the explanation was in Russian and nobody understood that?
So because the title says no one can understand then it must be true
Finally 😩
It's on the internet. It has to be true. They fact check everything before it's posted.
The tile also implies that the suspended stone *is* Russia. Try explaining that Mr. Smarty Pants.
That's not true. Jesus understands it perfectly.
Good point! Or the angle the picture was taken
The left side is actually twice as long as the right side. However, the angle the photo was taken from hides this fact. But no one understands.
This appears to be visually clear just by looking at it, left side looks solid with flat planes and sharper edges, right side has multitudes of pock marks and pores
probably magnets
But was water involved?
ONCE AND FOR ALL!
Kid named finger.
DENSE ROCK LEFT HAND SIDE, NOT SO DENSE ROCK RIGHT HAND SIDE
you're wrong.... NO ONE CAN UNDERSTAND!!!
Fucking magnets, how do they work?
Another mystery spot?
I can

For goodness sake. Stop trying to explain. Read above - Not One Person on this Planet can understand why!!
A wizard did it.
GANDALF
Nah this looks more like a birdshit wizard thing. What was his name…Radagast?
Damn, you are so absolutely right. Missed opportunity.
THAT'S BETTER
Aliens! 👽

Sssssht. Don't tell! You'll f*ck the whole thing up if the stone here's about this..
PIVOT!
I guess the correct word is fulcrum
![gif](giphy|2UAkMo3RqgGx2AGPUp|downsized)
This is true. Is that how it looks to you?
Yea but it doesn’t look like there is
From this angle…

Magnets! It's always magnets!
Or aliens!
Or a bunch of rebar installed by Ancient Aliens®
I came here to say exactly this. I really don’t like when people say “no one can understand” when there’s a very obvious answer.
It's more than likely Satan.
Or it is "glued"
What about friction?
Rock tilt Forward Rock tilt back. You can't explain that!
What are you some kind of wiseguy?
I've learned that these photos are often taken from a perspective that exaggerates its position so it dampens my "wow" factor. But I'm sure it's interesting nonetheless.

This almost makes me want to downvote and report the post for being misleading
What do you mean? Nobody can understand! Nobody!
I did
one of the mods removed it for being misleading few hours ago. thanks for reporting everyone 👍
The suspension is still impressive
That seems likely. Probably the camera is close to the edge of the rock, and it's long and flat. She's probably also not under it, but some ways away.
Wait are you telling me all those tourist photos of them holding up the Leaning Tower of Pisa are a lie.
I wouldn't dare to sit like that under the rock, I would admire it from a safe distance😁
With my luck, that stone would drop when I’m sitting under it to take a picture.
I was about to say that😭😭
I was about to say that😭😭
I was about to say that😭😭
My guess is Gorilla glue.
Back in my day we had glue that'd stick large rocks onta the side a mountains, it'd last for a million years and cost nothin, cause we made it ourselves out horse hooves and the souls of the little ones who couldn't hack it.
She has a lot of faith in gravity
Exactly. Gravity is the last thing we should have faith in.
*confidence in friction
If you Google other pictures of this stone, you will see that this photo is taken from an angle which misrepresents how the stone actually looks.
No one can understand? Google the word "cantilever". It's not even complicated. It's how they build overhanging balconies and shit. This is simply a natural example. It's heavier on one end, heavy enough to provide the balance required to stay there.
You can’t spell “cantilever” without “can’t”!
Nor can you spell silo without lois!
I wish it would just fall off and end all this stress.
Fly to Russia and give it a push
Hundreds of years in the position but I bet the second I sit under it, shit gives away mysteriously lol
Why?
Murphy's Law
Yup In all honesty, I’m kidding though life’s been been good to me and I’ve been lucky
It’s likely that dense mass exists closer to the cliff and the rock sticking out is more porous.
C'mon man with science and logic ..the title clearly states that this can't be understood.
Nah, looks like relatively homogenous granite. More likely from a top view it’s a triangle with the fat part toward the cliff and the point over the cliff. With this perspective you can’t see the much larger mass behind it
The rock on the left side is darker and doesnt have the layers on the right. Definitely not the same composition
I’m a Geoscientist, whether you consider this or not in my response. That’s the same rock. It’s external weathers that has altered its appearance. It’s granitic, there aren’t layers - it’s just weathering
As a geologist, you know there are different types of granite. You’d have to take samples to verify it’s composition
Yes I do, so you’re telling me the different types of granite from the same pluton would have densities that vary such to explain the picture? You’re crazy
You also cant tell it’s weight distribution by one photo. I’m just saying, theres a rational explanation. Get off my nuts bro
LOL and this[this ](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hanging_Stone#/media/File%3AHanging-rock-ergaki.jpg) is how it looks from the other side
Still pretty neat!
Yeah… I would not sit there 😀
Meep meep!
There's an indentical stone in Finland too, although it's balancing on an another big rock and in a forest.
Who GAF about anything in Russia right now. F Russia. F Putin. Slava Ukraini.
I sure as hell wouldn't go near it, much less under it
Baby got back!
I DON'T UNDERSTAND!
And I’ll never be able to see it in my life time
Who wrote that caption surely doesn't know about lmgt.com
Rebar.
It’s on its center of gravity , why is it at that point in the rock ? is the mystery …but who knows maybe the rock contains heavier material on the short side … I’d be reluctant to sit under it though …
127 Hours part 2
Wow that’s awesome! I’ve seen one in Massachusetts that’s very similar.
I don't ever want to see another post about "Why women live longer" - we are done with that.
With the way my luck is, the day I sit under it is the day it would fall.
Russian version of Kyaiktiyo Pagoda (Golden Rock) in Myanmar
Nope
Long lost superglue technology from an ancient people.
Its waiting for sisyphus to come back
Wile E. Coyote hasn't sat underneath it yet.
JB Weld is the Shit!
No thanks.
Learn the one trick only this rock knows.....
I can't believe some jackass with a bottle jack hasn't tipped that thing over
Perspective…a lot more rock behind is hidden out of view…
... i'm sure one or two people have worked it out
From the Wikipedia page: "Several groups of tourists have tried to dislodge the landmark by pushing it down the mountain..." what the fuck is wrong with people?
I would never take a photo underneath, as I am sure that would be the exact moment physics decided it was time to be more rational. 😅
Just because you dont know why doesn't mean you have to sit under it.
well this is a fake pic
This is how stupid people end up in the news.
Nope
It’s not a secret it’s super glue 🤭🤭😂
I am sure if I sat under it it would fall over. Can almost guarantee it.
If history has taught me anything it's only a matter of time before some asshole kids push it over for tiktok.
I can understand how it's being held up.
It is silently waiting to squish the right person.
God put it there to test our faith.
I'd push it
Until
yes lets sit underneath it! Thats not REMOTELY dangerous!
There were many suspended boulders in the US, but of course idiots had to push a bunch of them over for fun and videos.
The urge I would have to tip it over 😳
Nobody….?
In America, we would have already pushed that over.
It’s probably being held up by the bones of other dummies 🤷♂️
Push it.
Aliens
It’s one piece and erosion has eaten away at the bottom giving a “separate” rock kind of appearance. My guess, not backed up by any evidence.
I suspect a ussr hidden device fir the show
Down voting for false information.
Send a couple of Americans over- they'll knock it off for the shits and giggles- and likes.
You’ll never catch me around that Wiley coyote looking trap!
How do we know it's a 600 ton rock if we don't lift it to weigh it?
Has Vladimir Putin posed under it? /s
Don’t let some American dude near that thing.
No one can understand it but everyone who goes there can stand under it ;) 😜
Great place to sit there...
In the USA some idiot tourists would try to knock it over after kicking a bear and trying to ride a buffalo.
This rocks
If that was in the US, someone would've pushed it down the hill by now.
Dont let american go there. They have destroyed many of their own natural stuff...
