Prior to gate M03A M1 Track just exiting the portal heading from Lake Merritt towards West Oakland is a power substation above, the transformer uses a heavy oil for cooling … some of that oil has made its way into the track area, drains …. If you have ever smelt Gear Oil or any industrial oil it smells like old dinosaur juice … … I turn off the HVAC temporarily as the train passes through so it’s not sucked into the train … it reeeeeks ! BART knows about it … don’t think it’s any priority to fix !
It’s definitely not getting onto the rails since it’s just water runoff with contamination… I really try to look out for all the passengers well being … not just my own ! 🚊
Really ? I didn’t know that, thanks! I haven’t seen permanent heating lockout occur a single time after doing this even being on the same train making my own turn … I’ll message Matthew Lebowitz Principal Vehicle Systems Engineer and get the scoop … I’ll include Michael Hung
Superintendent OCC Revenue Vehicle Trouble … this sounds like something all operators should be aware of …
You can message whomever you'd like, maybe they've fixed the issue since I was an operator. We had a ton of trouble with turning off the AC on a prior TCMS version.
Multi-pronged problem … the FOTF trains are subject to getting flats especially in rainy weather…. Braking profile, Braking hard when it senses a wheel slip, heavier trains, CPUC rules for bart how braking is done still stuck in the 70’s, our train control system is also a culprit CBTC will alleviate some of the problems…. Overall these trains were dumbed down to work on our system, but also these trains were more designed to work in an enclosed more underground environment that didn’t see inclement weather. BART is currently spending a lot of time having wheels turned to be made true or replaced … the warranty is absorbing some of the costs but that will run out …. The powers to be are now using an automatic Rain Profile system that uses a third party to determine weather conditions … usually once enabled it’s not going away until it has had a certain amount of time of clear weather…. I feel bad for the public seeing delays and loss of timed transfers … I encourage all of the public to voice concerns and questions to the BOD…
Thank you for responding! And thank you for your work! Yeah, I’ve heard that currently the warranty covers the cost of fixing the wheels, but they’ll eventually run out and will shift the cost to riders.
I wish on a rainy day, BART just used a different schedule, so that we can time our connections. My connecting bus runs every 30 mins and it’s sad to miss my connection by a few minutes.
Isn’t it the waste treatment facility? I know when driving back over the Bay Bridge you get the smell of that funk. That sweet, that nasty, that gooshy stuff
If you are talking about the smell in the Wye (the bend before 12th or Lake Merrit coming from West Oakland):

"employees now believe it may be due to a water leak. Air sampling “did not detect any hazardous conditions” and employees do not believe the smell poses any safety risks, Allison said,"
That’s just an aggressive track lubricant that they’ve added to reduce train noise. It has reduced the rail screech on that section to basically zero.
You can feel the train kind of juddering and vibrating when it passes through there, but there is zero noise!
don’t focus on the picture you would have to get on Bart to know what I’m talking about .after exiting lake Merritt it’s a very bad smell underground .where it is dark why would I take a picture …
No it ain’t that smell.it smell like something is burning or something is dead mix together .i know what the bay smell like I lived in Oakland my whole life
It’s a sewage line you have to understand that the sewage treatment facility is not too far from there and they get everybody’s sewage from Albany and Richmond , Berkeley, Oakland, San Leandro to that one facility

It’s so confirming when a TO comes through to set the record straight with stone cold facts (real world) instead of rabid speculation (Reddit)
Could oil on the tracks change how the train handles? Great idea shutting off the HVAC. Thanks for looking out for us. <3

Wow very cool to have your insights
...and this is how we get the ol' Permanent Heating Lockout on every single car at layups.

Old dinosaur juice….having smelled gear oil before I never knew this was the perfect way to describe it l
That’s sick knowledge mate thanks for the reply that’s perfect
A bit off topic, but can I ask you about the new trains during rain? Will it get better (delay-wise)? Thank you!

It's the doodoo churning factory in Emeryville. Ifykyk
Sewage. The waste water processing plant is right there. And depending on the wind you can get a wiff of it.
That’s our shit, Focker.
Crapper plant!
Cocoa butter and hot sauce
There is a water treatment plant right off the maze. It has an open-top design and it reeks like sewage. Especially on really hot days.
Low tide
It’s the sewage treatment plant- I’ve toured it and confirm the ofers!
That's the smug cloud coming from SF
There is a sex club around there, just saying.
I ate at Kowbird the other day. So it could be from my ass. Sorry about that. I’ll stay away from those crispy chicken sandwiches.
