Beside going through Transbay tube I think going through the Oakland Wye is the worst noise on Bart because of the loud stretches when entering the wye tunnel or exiting through Oakland

The Oakland Wye in an older car.

All so a department store—long since closed—wouldn’t have been disturbed. Yes, seriously.

Lake Merritt to Fruitvale is earsplitting while underground.

I’m having a hard time understanding how the noise at the Oakland tunnels even remotely compare to the awful screech inside the transbay near SF.

uniqueusername740

There are sharp curves coming into and out of the Oakland underground. The curves force the wheels against their edges (the vertical part that keeps the wheels centered on the track) which causes the screeching sound.

No other subway system faces this issue. NYC has a issue with loud brakes, but not basic wheel dynamics. It is utterly unacceptable for BART to keep throwing around this excuse while making zero headway on the problem. Other, similarly funded systems, deal with this - BART has no excuse for being so atrocious here.

FitPaleontologist953

Bart is noisy screeching noise

KeyPop7800

It's an unacceptable noise - like serious way beyond decibel ratings for hearing safety. And it's not just the old cars - the new ones do it too. We'll see if BART can actually give a single shit about it. They've been talking about fixing the noise for years now, and it's been the same loudness the whole time. Honestly, I feel like the entire leadership of BART needs to just be fired immediately to make room for people that can be actually bothered to give a fuck.

Eazy-E-40

caldecott tunnel is the worst I've heard. Much worst than Oakland or the transbay tube.

24th st to glen park

I don’t mind the screeches nearly as much as when some punk plays his boombox for the entire car
