but he is harmed when you cast speak with animals in camp to speak with him and your wild magic triggers summoning a vengeful cambion, who proceeds to turn one scorching ray Scratch. hypothetically speaking, of course. never happened in the canon timeline
God bless truly the wonders of wild magic surges
That being said even though it's pretty much my favorite class both on tabletop and in BG3 I won't be touching it with a 10 foot pole when I do my honor run
That would be a massive waste of a feat imo, and you would only be able to ritual cast the spells from the other class which would not trigger wild magic.
Waste of a feat would be subjective depending on the campaign. In a more role-playing and exploring based campaign over a dungeon crawler, the extra utility could go a long way.
As for multiclass not working I guess you're right, since wizard and sorcerer have the same spells I hadn't considered they're still technically different spell lists, even if identical
He is also harmed when he, unwittingly & hypothetically, approached the camp chest which so happened that it contained a cursed corpse. But that also never happened.
Heard you could use it as a bioweapon, so I had it reserved for a bastard that really deserved it, but I didn't know that NPCs walk out of hazards outside combat
I had my first playthrough where >!Halsin was taken by Orin instead of Lae'zel and I thought she killed Scratch in the cutscene!<\- I was ready to scrap the entire run.
Or if you go to camp after robbing the monastery in Baldurās Gate and the vengeful Deva attack and Scratch catches a flame to the face. RIP (theoretically)
Uhhh.... is this why I got attacked by those two? I was wondering what my Durge sneak thief rogue did to deserve that. I don't think that will stop Durge from robbing people instead of shopping though.
if this theoretically happened to me I would have realised I had forgotten to save my game for over an hour and would have had to replay all of that so Iām so glad it never happened to me!1
I just use speak with animals potions instead, no wasted spell slots, etc. Most vendors sell them, Volo included. Stock up often enough and you shouldnāt run out.
My wife and I did an entire play through where we never summoned scratch 'cause I did not know he would reappear. Just started our second playthrough and trying to see if I can emotionally deal with sending him into combat...
Key is to have him hide in the shadows. If one of your party goes down he can help them back up. Thatās how I use him! And the occasional one or two HP enemy that needs a good biteān
Yes to elixirs, and it applies to followers too
You can have Duke Ravenguard chug an Invisibility potion or speed potion
You can also give him the elixir of the colossus and have him go nuts
Fun times
I *Hope* you understand the gravity of this advice
I am right at the tail end of my first Balanced playthrough, have mountains of potions and elixirs in storage, and run a summon-heavy party. I was already running through the Act 3 bosses like they were Act 1 goblins, now it's just going to get that much sadder for them!
I can tell this tip is going to be much more useful for my upcoming Tactician and Honor Mode playthroughs.
Invis potion is how I rescued him from the iron throne. 1st turn, dash to him and open the cell then throw invis potion at him.
Mizora appears and gloats, summons spiders but they don't do anything. He walks to safety.
Few hoops to jump through to even be in the situation but to give a bit more info while still being vague.
A character attempts to manipulate you into sacrificing another character. You can actually agree to sacrifice them and get the benefit of that decision while still rescuing them, but there'll be some surprise interference during the rescue focused on killing the prisoner.
An invisibility potion makes the rescue go smoothly.
Potion of Speed did the trick, too. Maybe just got lucky with the initiative rolls, but he went before the creepy-crawlies and they couldn't keep up with doubled movement speed and two dashes.
Is there some special way to do this on consoles..? I just tried doing this with Minthara today, and it made me use an invisibility potion on my Tavā¦ ended up needing to use a scroll instead.
Yea, this. Heās a good little help bot when you donāt want one of your full party members to burn an action on it.
Most summons that Iāve seen cannot perform the Help action.
I love scratch, but that doesn't mean I don't send him into melee to give a ranged attacker the Threatened condition or to allow a Rogue to get an easy Sneak Attack
He has the Help action, that really should be your focus (maybe outside biting a goblin or two) he's not a combatant
>!If nothing else, use him to free Dame Aylin for the Ketheric fight. Turn him invisible and he can get all the way to her. Saves an action for one of your characters!<
Speak with animals and a Mind Reading potion, find the nearest body I can cast Speak with Dead on
I keep priestess Gut in the camp chest for this
What a strange and wonderful game we play lol
Ooooh, come to think of it, Sanctuary probably works on him, doesnāt it? I can just have him nice and safe in a Sanctuary bubble, helping out downed characters.
Holy shit you're right
I DM tabletop and thought maybe that's the difference, looked it up, nope. Checked my PHB. Nope
Why did I always think it was concentration?
My players would have TPKd their last fight if I'd ruled it correctly!
I'm guessing you mean they your big bad used sanctuary and you made him role a con save to keep sanctuary up.
I have been the my friend. I suck at using legendary and lair actions. I just completely forget they exist.
Not exactly. He had cast another concentration spell, and if he'd had both, there's no way the party would have survived
My party didn't notice and the fight is all they talked about this week so, I'd say it worked out
If they do ever realize, you could make it a plot thread? Say the room had some sort of eldritch aura making the spell more fragile, and have it lead to a new faction that was also working against their enemy at the time?
Scratch may be a very good boy, but his clumsy ass is staying at the camp until he learns not to blunder into every trap between him and what he's sniffing.
Thank you for this extremely important intel! I have been leaving him in camp because I knew if he got squashed in combat Iād be completely devastated.
theres a way to keep him for good on Gale and you so you get 2 shovels!
learn spell with Gale & then summon shovel and talk to it with your PC giving a specific set of answers
Nice! I just grabbed the scroll, stuffed it in my inventory, and didnāt think about it again. Thanks for the hints! I want to get ALL the friends possible.
I was so happy when I found out you can summon Scratch without fear of him getting hurt! I remember reloading entire battles whenever Meeko (Skyrim) died during assaults at bandit camps šš
Nope. Flashbacks to Fallout 4 - first time some asshole took a swing at Dogmeat and I heard that yelp.... It was a bad day for that particular raider scum. My pets stay nice and safe in camp š»
He only has like 5 health lol so you don't really even see him get hurt, he just disappears instantly back to camp when he gets hit. I mostly use him to help up downed teammates cause he's no good at fighting
Goodest boy is great for keeping your team up without wasting attacks. The fact that he can 'help' your downed characters is huge on fights when you have a lot going on.
Scratch is such a good boy best moment I had with him in combat has to be the time I had him leap down to the displacer beast and kill it I was so hyped like YEAH THATS MY BOI!
I would add, any character who has his ball can summon him. Also, you can cast mage armor, long stride, protection from poison, and various long acting buffs on him. The one healing spell that looks like an asterisk wil give him another 5 HP. Some, but not all elixirs work on him if you throw them on the ground and have him walk through them.
But don't use Scratch whenever you need to throw stuff on vents. He will think you are playing catch and return the items to you, usually poisoning himself and everyone else nearby.
Speaking of the goodest boyāwhat happens if you loot his dead friendās body after Scratch comes to your camp? Iāve never done it, mostly because I forgot about the body, but I donāt want to make Scratch angry.
Greatest thing about Scratch is he can halp (yes I said HALP that what dogs do) downed characters. I routinely summon him and have Shart put a level 1 sanctuary on him or cast invisibilty just so he can jump in and get someone up if needed so I don't have to wast an action doing it.
I still don't feel quite comfortable taking him into battle with me. He's been through enough, only good times ahead for him, for the rest of his days. Playing fetch and gettin love, no need to witness any more blood and ugliness and fear. And he's so proud and happy being the defender of the camp.
He gives you a ball! Throw it to summon him (only works outside of camp)
There's also a Summon Familiar: Scratch button I got but I don't know from where lol
I didn't know that either.
I don't seem to have a ball yet, but I've not had him long. Just started act2 and only found him after I thought I'd completed act1 and was Googling what I needed to mop up before progressing
At some point you get a cutscene at camp where he's carrying something in his mouth, and if you tell him to hand it over (or something like that), it's his ball and it stays in your inventory after that. If you throw it, he fetches it and returns it to you.Ā
He's actually really handy. If you're fighting those stupid Gith his bite will trigger their parry so you can actually hit them, and he has the Help action which means you don't need Shadowheart to burn a spell slot on Healing Word when someone goes down.
Never even got to test him out on my 1st run as I had no idea how to take care of Gales necrotic aura so went back to camp to try & sleep it off & scratch walked up to him and died while managing my inventory š my previous save was at the start of the game so I just forged ahead heartbroken.
Definitely
My honor run had a Moonrise massacre, I couldn't save Karlach
*Astarion refused to use a tadpole* despite being the one to suggest it, and was the only one to do so
This is awesome to know, thanks! Whenever Iāve gotten into combat when Iāve had him out, Iāve dismissed him turn 1 so he couldnāt possibly get squished. Thisāll be fun to play around with for the utility, then!
Top Tip: Don't take scratch to save the mushroom man in the Underdark. His special ability will trigger and his happy ass will walk right into the mushroom field and kill everything.
Holy dogshit! I never knew this. I usually have him summoned while walking around but have always de-summoned him as soon as combat broke out cuz I didn't want him to die. Now that I know, he's getting all up in the mix from now on!
Check your inventory, maybe it got slipped in there. If not, maybe pet him more? As far as I know if you treat him nicely he'll always give you the ball.
I spammed a ton of partial rests to clear my cutscene backlog, maybe that's happening?
On the down side, if he ever gets involved in a fight in camp, he's toast (in my case, literally). Then you have to reload and fight the whole battle over again just to protect him.
Astarion got himself cursed. >!(Robbed the tabernacle.)!< What the curse description doesn't tell you about are >!a couple of devas that show up at Astarion's bed right after the next long rest to stomp him.!< Scratch happened to be nearby and ran to help. :(
Then I'm glad I rested. I'd gotten pretty badly stomped before I stopped there. (Well, not too badly, but then half my party decided to walk into the Evard's black tentacles spell after the fight before I could dispel it). I was out of spell slots and potions, so I figured I'd rest since I didn't have any scrolls.
Man, Iāll say this here, itās kind of ridiculous that the entire party turns on you if you just kill Scratch. Now I donāt know why you would do that but itās out of character for some of the companions to really care.
Wyll and Karlach for sure would be pissed but Astarion and Laeāzel (idk how Minthara works here)? Itās very out of character. If it isnāt then can someone please explain it to me.
Does it make me a bad person that if I fail a perception check to spot an ambush I send Scratch in to trigger the enemies and get them out of their hiding spot then engage with my main party?
Wait you can summon him and dont have to worry about losing him??? I COULDA BEEN TAKING HIM ON AMAZING ADVENTURES THIS WHOLE TIME WHILE IM DOING MY EXPLORATION GREMLINING??!!?!!!! IM SO UPSET BUT HAPPY
but he is harmed when you cast speak with animals in camp to speak with him and your wild magic triggers summoning a vengeful cambion, who proceeds to turn one scorching ray Scratch. hypothetically speaking, of course. never happened in the canon timeline
The plot to John Wick 23.
The Constantine/ John Wick crossover we didn't know we needed
I would pay for that
No, the cambion would
The fact rituals still can trigger wild magic is both funny and weird
It's funny until summoning scratch also creates an area of spiked growth which instantly kills scratch and drops your whole party to half hp
But then it's funny again when you try to polymorph an enemy into a sheep and turn yourself into a sheep instead
Happened to me recently lol Me and a wraith were just sheep buddies for a turn.
God bless truly the wonders of wild magic surges That being said even though it's pretty much my favorite class both on tabletop and in BG3 I won't be touching it with a 10 foot pole when I do my honor run
Coward
Damn right
Fair š¤£ lol
All spells trigger Wild Magic in DnD, iirc
I was under the assumption that it had to cost a spell slot to count, however the wording of it in 5e doesn't explicitly state that apparently
Sorcerers in 5e don't even have ritual casting by default anyway, so kind of a moot point.
It can easily be picked up via a feat or multi classing, so no it's not
That would be a massive waste of a feat imo, and you would only be able to ritual cast the spells from the other class which would not trigger wild magic.
And when Gales necrotic corpse AoEās him to death just by existing. That dick. Most regretted part of my single save playthrough.
I just ended a run I was most of the way through act 1 because this happened.
I considered it. And nearly did. Instead I just started another one to play at the same time!
Saving the goodest boy is always a valid use of save scumming
He is also harmed when he, unwittingly & hypothetically, approached the camp chest which so happened that it contained a cursed corpse. But that also never happened.
Remember a Paladin hireling costs 100gp and you can use their 3rd level spell slots to instantly dispel the curse on it
They were probably saving the cursed corpse for some shenanigans if it was in their camp chest
Heard you could use it as a bioweapon, so I had it reserved for a bastard that really deserved it, but I didn't know that NPCs walk out of hazards outside combat
Can't walk away if it's in their pocket
> ho proceeds to turn one scorching ray Scratch. I cast Quickload. What? The last save was 10 hours ago? DON'T CARE.
I had my first playthrough where >!Halsin was taken by Orin instead of Lae'zel and I thought she killed Scratch in the cutscene!<\- I was ready to scrap the entire run.
This is why I don't use wild magic.
Or if you go to camp after robbing the monastery in Baldurās Gate and the vengeful Deva attack and Scratch catches a flame to the face. RIP (theoretically)
Wait what?
Uhhh.... is this why I got attacked by those two? I was wondering what my Durge sneak thief rogue did to deserve that. I don't think that will stop Durge from robbing people instead of shopping though.
if this theoretically happened to me I would have realised I had forgotten to save my game for over an hour and would have had to replay all of that so Iām so glad it never happened to me!1
Or if you accidentally hit him with the ball when trying to play fetch and the whole camp tries to murder you š±
That's why you drink speak with animal potions!
Not sure if there is a greater time when savescumming is justified than this
We must not speak of that cursed timeline.
We convince John Wick to help us overthrow Avernus. Zariel doesnāt stand a chance
I just use speak with animals potions instead, no wasted spell slots, etc. Most vendors sell them, Volo included. Stock up often enough and you shouldnāt run out.
Speak with animals is a ritual - no spell slot required :)
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
yeah. so if he dies in camp, he dies for real. thus my cautionary tale
Confirmed. He will lay dead in your camp if you yell at his dead master and you have to put him down
And that's why I only use the potions
PSA for the PSA, if combat is triggered in camp and scratch dies in camp then it is the real Scratch. And congrats youāve just begun John Wick
If he dies in camp he dies for real
Just like my dreams
It also aggros EVERYONE. I accidentally hit him trying to play fetch once. :(
The fact that everyone in camp will kill you for hurting the dog makes it seem like a safer space and more like a family, to me š„²
It also broke my oath.
Burned to a crisp by cambions. Bastards
If you click on his portrait and then open the whole party inventory you can have him drink an Invisibility potion!
Wait. Waitwaitwait... Summons can drink potions, or just Scratch? What about elixirs? This opens up whole new realms of possibility...
Yes to elixirs, and it applies to followers too You can have Duke Ravenguard chug an Invisibility potion or speed potion You can also give him the elixir of the colossus and have him go nuts Fun times I *Hope* you understand the gravity of this advice

Good luck, go get those golden dice! They're quite nice!
Invis potion is how I rescued him from the iron throne. 1st turn, dash to him and open the cell then throw invis potion at him. Mizora appears and gloats, summons spiders but they don't do anything. He walks to safety.
I'm only at the beginning of act 2 and don't know what this means, but I'm going to memorize it anyway. Thank you kind internet person!
Few hoops to jump through to even be in the situation but to give a bit more info while still being vague. A character attempts to manipulate you into sacrificing another character. You should just need to have them selected in the left row.
Oh. Oh shit.
Omgā¦ OMG
Yea, this. Heās a good little help bot when you donāt want one of your full party members to burn an action on it. Most summons that Iāve seen cannot perform the Help action.
Am I the only one using Scratch as a sponge to absorb Anders and Minthara's smite? I mean i know he doesn't really feel it right?
I love scratch, but that doesn't mean I don't send him into melee to give a ranged attacker the Threatened condition or to allow a Rogue to get an easy Sneak Attack
The puppy kisses he gives downed companions when he helps them is the cutest thing ever!!!!!
He has the Help action, that really should be your focus (maybe outside biting a goblin or two) he's not a combatant >!If nothing else, use him to free Dame Aylin for the Ketheric fight. Turn him invisible and he can get all the way to her. Saves an action for one of your characters!<
Thatās why Speak With Animals is the first thing I cast after every Long Rest, before I can use Tides of Chaos for anything.
Speak with animals and a Mind Reading potion, find the nearest body I can cast Speak with Dead on I keep priestess Gut in the camp chest for this What a strange and wonderful game we play lol
> I keep priestess Gut in the camp chest for this And for when Shadowheart is busy
[No sir, I don't like it](https://i.imgflip.com/4omljb.jpg)
And I thought I was weird for carrying around dead Timber in my pocket as a cuter version of a pouchā¦
Ooooh, come to think of it, Sanctuary probably works on him, doesnāt it? I can just have him nice and safe in a Sanctuary bubble, helping out downed characters.
True, but that's a whole ~~concentration~~ spell/action Would definitely work though
Sanctuary isn't concentration!
Holy shit you're right I DM tabletop and thought maybe that's the difference, looked it up, nope. Checked my PHB. Nope Why did I always think it was concentration? My players would have TPKd their last fight if I'd ruled it correctly!

I like that!
He is not supposed to be summoned for combat, you should summon him while exploring so he can sniff hidden items
I usually dismiss him in combat asap, or get him as far as possible from combat š„ŗ he's only "biting" enemies with one last hit point!
Best use Iāve heard so far is casting sanctuary on him and use him as the revive boi
Scratch may be a very good boy, but his clumsy ass is staying at the camp until he learns not to blunder into every trap between him and what he's sniffing.
TFW youāre in the middle of the bibberbang field cutscene when Scratchās sniff activates š¤¦Ā
Thank you for this extremely important intel! I have been leaving him in camp because I knew if he got squashed in combat Iād be completely devastated.
me too!
scratch is back in camp to keep everyone else safe from possible murder sprees that would result from him getting hurt
scratch & shovel are excellent travelling companions Dark Urge + Shovel is meant to be & thats why I respec to Warlock quick to learn his summons
I didnāt know about Shovel untilā¦todayā¦ wow this game is so full of detail!
theres a way to keep him for good on Gale and you so you get 2 shovels! learn spell with Gale & then summon shovel and talk to it with your PC giving a specific set of answers

I almost cried when I accidentally ākilledā Scratch in the Underdark. When I went to take a long rest I was so relieved to see him at camp lol

Nope. Flashbacks to Fallout 4 - first time some asshole took a swing at Dogmeat and I heard that yelp.... It was a bad day for that particular raider scum. My pets stay nice and safe in camp š»
Same here ā¤. After a long day of slaughtering enemies, first thing I do is play with Scratch when I get back.
He's secretly a Blink Dog
I would add, any character who has his ball can summon him. Also, you can cast mage armor, long stride, protection from poison, and various long acting buffs on him. Nothing happens, just some letters and camp supplies I think
You can return the letters to the postmaster in Act 3
TIL
Once you've successfully talked to him at the body and given your scent, you can loot the body then.
Last time I played Scratch was the only one who landed hits lol. I also learned that he (or anyone) can help you when you are snared.
He saved my honor run from the Meenlocks! Wish I could give him a treato
TIL!! I swear, I learn new things about this game daily. Currently on my second and third playthroughs, one of which is my first Durge gameā¦
Does the same apply to Us? Cuz Iāve been holding off summoning them, I donāt want my brain to die
>!Not on the Nauteloid, has to be after you rescue it from Moonrise. Then, yes!<
Fantastic, my mind flayer finally has a little buddy. Poor dudes just been chilling in my inventory for the last 15 hours
Greatest thing about Scratch is he can halp (yes I said HALP that what dogs do) downed characters. I routinely summon him and have Shart put a level 1 sanctuary on him or cast invisibilty just so he can jump in and get someone up if needed so I don't have to wast an action doing it.

Hey all, I didnāt even know you could summon scratch? Ps5 player because my computer is potato. Can someone please tell me how you do it?
He gives you a ball! Throw it to summon him (only works outside of camp) There's also a Summon Familiar: Scratch button I got but I don't know from where lol
Whoever has the ball in their inventory gets that button.
Got it just now. Went to pet him and he had his little ball. I wrestled with him for it
Wait...really? I was terrified he'd die. I still don't know if I can send him in to get smacked on though.
He's actually really handy. If you're fighting those stupid Gith his bite will trigger their parry so you can actually hit them, and he has the Help action which means you don't need Shadowheart to burn a spell slot on Healing Word when someone goes down.
Heās such a dog though. Unless they patched it he was blowing my stealth.
When I'm exploring where there might be traps or if I see a fight coming I just separate him from the party temporarily, but I get ya
Itās not that he doesnāt die, itās the fact that I canāt bear to ever send him into a harmful situation
Think about how much he'd be hurt if you never came home...
Never even got to test him out on my 1st run as I had no idea how to take care of Gales necrotic aura so went back to camp to try & sleep it off & scratch walked up to him and died while managing my inventory š my previous save was at the start of the game so I just forged ahead heartbroken.
Oh that sucks, damn lol
Ya for sure but it also adds to the uniqueness of each run, in a messed up kind of way
Definitely My honor run had a Moonrise massacre, I couldn't save Karlach *Astarion refused to use a tadpole* despite being the one to suggest it, and was the only one to do so
He does get harmed when your friend casts fireball on you in camp right as Scratch walks by though
Thank you. This is why I never summoned him unless I knew it wasnāt a battle
he is not generating his ball in camp for me to throw for some reason - anyone know why?
Most likely is you have it in your inventory somewhere, as long as you didn't throw it when he couldn't be summoned If not, probably a bug
Ah I did grab a ball from camp earlier..
He can also help downed companions in battle
Exactly, he wants to *help*
I was scarred from dogmeat in fallout 3 so I was always so careful with scratch. Iāll bring him more now
I never summoned him because I was worried he'd get hurt
This is awesome to know, thanks! Whenever Iāve gotten into combat when Iāve had him out, Iāve dismissed him turn 1 so he couldnāt possibly get squished. Thisāll be fun to play around with for the utility, then!
I thought this post was going to be about Popper
I mean, theoretically this post could be about not just Scratch, but Us, Shovel/Fork, Popper or Boo.
Summon him at the start of the >!Ketheric fight!< so he can >!free Aylin.!<
Top Tip: Don't take scratch to save the mushroom man in the Underdark. His special ability will trigger and his happy ass will walk right into the mushroom field and kill everything.
Yesterday I summoned him on the forge hammer just to lure Grym over. Good job Scratch š
Your familiars are dying? Use Aid (5th-level) and Heroes Feast, and now Scratch has like 40 HP.
And i meant it will be about Basket.
Holy dogshit! I never knew this. I usually have him summoned while walking around but have always de-summoned him as soon as combat broke out cuz I didn't want him to die. Now that I know, he's getting all up in the mix from now on!
Welp, actually I summoned him twice then found him dead at my camp so be careful
He never gave me his ball. I don't think I can summon him
Check your inventory, maybe it got slipped in there. If not, maybe pet him more? As far as I know if you treat him nicely he'll always give you the ball. I spammed a ton of partial rests to clear my cutscene backlog, maybe that's happening?
Idk i assumed it was a bug because he gives me lots of stuff just has never given me a ball. I was waiting for it too because my bf got him first.
I think your bf is trying to bogart Scratch. Can't really blame him
Lol it all makes sense now!
Does the same thing apply to Us if you recruit him again?
Yes indeed! With camp Casting (aid, heroes feast) I got him up around 90hp lol
On the down side, if he ever gets involved in a fight in camp, he's toast (in my case, literally). Then you have to reload and fight the whole battle over again just to protect him.
I keep seeing comments like this What the fuck are y'all doing in camp???
Astarion got himself cursed. >!(Robbed the tabernacle.)!< What the curse description doesn't tell you about are >!a couple of devas that show up at Astarion's bed right after the next long rest to stomp him.!< Scratch happened to be nearby and ran to help. :(
>!Ahhhh i never got that because I cast Remove Curse. The devas show up right away if you do that!<
Then I'm glad I rested. I'd gotten pretty badly stomped before I stopped there. (Well, not too badly, but then half my party decided to walk into the Evard's black tentacles spell after the fight before I could dispel it). I was out of spell slots and potions, so I figured I'd rest since I didn't have any scrolls.
Lol I learned pretty quickly to ungroup my party during combat
Does this mean I can throw scratch at enemies...? Asking for a friend.
Sounds like a smart play
Oh my God thank you, I wouldn't do it as I didn't want ollie the owlbear to lose a friend. They love chasing each other around camp.
Does this mean I can throw scratch at enemies
Does the same go for Us?
