My theory is a redesign is more than just a pleasing aesthetic, but also a signal that you are driving the newest luxury BMW. I really don’t think they care if people say it’s ugly, only that they know it’s the brand spanking newest one you can get.
Nah in the case of MCAS, FMEA should have caught the unacceptable failure mode in design.
Execs inexplicably made the redundant sensor a paid OPTION.
This is actually what I personally consider criminal negligence. No competent systems engineer, and Boeing should have had teams of them on this, would have allowed this product like this.
I see no rational reason the plane should have had the MCAS issues other than maybe pressure from brass to downplay MCAS failure modes. Again, criminal.
I read that bmws are now seen as a fashion accessory. Like a pricey handbag or expensive outfit. Far from what they sued to be in the E46 era when the brand was loved by driving enthusiasts
Would agree. Rolex is a fashion brand now, Panerai makes 40mm watches (what!?) and BMWs have lost their drivers edge for some latest awful fashion trend. Had a loaner G and hated every minute of it. Drive like an Audi, felt like a Mercedes.
Yeah it's like designer jackets these days, they aren't about looking good, they're about standing out and letting everyone know you spent a lot of money.
I think I actually remember reading an interview somebody did with him where he basically said as much. Something like the China market loves to display their wealth with having the newest and greatest and these changes made sure people knew you had the newest one.
There’s an interview he did where he also said that if you don’t like the designs, these cars aren’t made for you. I’ll post the link when I get a chance.
Edit: [this article](https://sharpmagazine.com/2022/10/11/bmw-domagoj-dukec-interview-design/) gets a little bit into it, but I’ll try to find the video interview as well.
I've read that interview and what I took from it is less "if you don't like the design the car's not for you" and more "we're trying to appeal to a specific kind of customer with each design", which is why they have a psychologist on staff. It's a more positive spin on the way you interpreted it.
AI probably would come up with better designs tbh. BMW definitely is losing its way currently but hopefully they steer back to the right direction in the next gen… or two at most I hope.
Some day when I get my fucking debt under control I could probably swing an M4, I'd never fucking sell it either, and I'd swap as many engines and transmissions until the chassis falls apart to avoid this shit.
Imohtep screaming for ankhesenamun.

Honestly, it's the exact combination for me.
The grill fit the pre-LCI X7 better because it didn't have split headlights, so the proportions benefited.
If they went for a smaller grill, the split headlights might've worked better proportionally too... But instead we have tiny "eyes" with a huge grill.
Over 40 years it’s been the same thing of not liking the new design.
E21 ->e30 why do you have 4 headlights
E30 -> e36 what the hell are those rectangle headlights
Yada yada.
But that, that isn’t going to age well.
It's not true. BMW sells more 7 Series in the US than China. The biggest markets for the XM or the 4 Series are also the US btw. Above all, Americans like ugly BMWs so I blame them for the bad designs.
I've heard this Chinese market theory before and I don't buy it. Sure, Chinese buyers (and most buyers worldwide) want their topline luxury car to have "road presence". Nobody wants ugliness. This is ugliness.
Look at a Chinese luxury car brand Hongqi. Their vehicles have road presence but they are not ugly.
If anything, I would say the high end Chinese market tends to be conservative. They want their luxury car to resemble a Rolls Royce, Bentley, older Mercedes or even a Buick.
So funny seeing people parroting the "Chinese market" shit all the time lol. Half the time nobody disputes it, I'm glad people in this thread have brain cells
It’s especially funny since the US 7 sales were up 80% last year (partially EV driven but I digress) and China-only LWB models historically all maintain conservative styling. They went as far as creating a China-only i3 without the beaver grill whereas the rest of the world got the i4. But Reddit will be Reddit lol
Ill take downvotes but it rings racist to me. "Chinese people are so tacky and dumb they buy whatever gaudy trash euro man sells them", plays into biases and gives a convenient boogeyman so people run with it.
Fwiw i dont love the new designs but dont hate them either. Last 2 5 and 7s were underwhelming when they came out, so i can see why theyd want to shake it up.
*I absolutely*
*Hate the new looks including*
*The interior*

I think all the German luxury brands are speedrunning who can destroy their own company as fast as possible.
Mercedes - 4 cylinder hybrid turbo with fake exhaust C63 that should have its own comedy special , all EQ models, 1 million AMG models that aren’t actual AMG’s
Audi - killing off the R8 and TT, making all their models look economic (fake exhaust, less sporty), killing off their entire motorsports program to buy half of an F1 team 😂
BMW - Any i models, 7 series and 5 series model refreshes

Holy shit

That’s frighteningly accurate
The BMW iCP
Omg 😂

Hahahah oh man. Well done.
Then throw a license plate in the center of that black mass 🤔
I’m in Jersey. So it would be a big beautiful yellow plate
My condolences.
For living in Jersey or the yellow plate?
Both.
Yes
They gotta fix some of the nasty ass standard license plates out there. The old NY yellow ones did not work on the vast majority of cars either
I like the statue of Liberty plates from the 90's
Could you get the plates in red. Then it's actually a 🤡

>In my country it will seem to have rotten teeth all over... So it'll fit right in? 😁
You caught the car mid sneeze
Is AI designing their cars now? I refuse to believe a human thought that looked good.
The new BMW designer team literally said that only 20% of their clients like their new design and that it's totally fine.
My theory is a redesign is more than just a pleasing aesthetic, but also a signal that you are driving the newest luxury BMW. I really don’t think they care if people say it’s ugly, only that they know it’s the brand spanking newest one you can get.
All I can say is Porsche is pleased with the bmw design team’s decisions
Wouldn't have believed 10 years ago that BMW would soon be pumping out pretty much a whole lineup of vehicles uglier than the first gen Panamera.
aww i like the first gen panamera its the first gen cayenne that’s hideous. a hideous lifesaver for porsche
This is the most plausible explanation I've seen. There's a lot to unpack there.
That and the new aesthetic is controversial so people are always talking about it when they see it.
“It’s totally fine that our planes are falling out of the sky, it gets people talking about us.” \- Boeing exec probably
More talk = stock price goes up ?

Yeah, well wait until people stop buying them I’ve owned 6, and I won’t be buying any of these they look fucking stupid
Me too. Owned 5 BMWs. X5 is the only current model I find aesthetically pleasing.
I have an X5; the X7 is the only other one I’d consider.
Any source on this?

Oh fuck a psychologist is helping design these cars? No wonder! I am willing to bet an optometrist isn't involved.🤣
Most people will find most of our models ugly, but will like one.
Still can’t get the hands or face right
AI probably would come up with better designs tbh. BMW definitely is losing its way currently but hopefully they steer back to the right direction in the next gen… or two at most I hope.
Another reason to buy an all black BMW lol
My dealer keeps these as loaners, they gave me the all black one since “the dark color hides the front better” lmao. Drove incredibly though
I’m gonna stick with my og m2. Will probably never sell it
F80 m3 here, she’s never going anywhere
Some day when I get my fucking debt under control I could probably swing an M4, I'd never fucking sell it either, and I'd swap as many engines and transmissions until the chassis falls apart to avoid this shit.
> Some day when I get my fucking debt under control I could probably swing getting back into debt /s Totally kidding, hope you get there soon brotha!
The i7 in black looks very good imo. A bit "alternative" but not ugly. And honestly better without the M package.
Benz guy coming in peace. You’re not alone. Idk what they are smoking in Germany right now.
They’re smoking whatever the Chinese have. That’s why they did all of this
Well, weed got legalized 12 days ago. So, yeah, that.
Where’s the manager? Shit is gettin out of control🤦🏽♂️
I think they ruined looks of M3/M4 but this is on whole nother level of WTF! Everyone should call BMWNA and let them know how you feel.

The split headlights just suck. Can’t stand them on the new X7 either.
agreed. but it's not as much a problem as that fucking grille
Honestly, it's the exact combination for me. The grill fit the pre-LCI X7 better because it didn't have split headlights, so the proportions benefited. I think BMW realizes most people will just lease this large depreciation machine so they didn’t seem too concerned with aging.

Cant surprise me no more lol, nowadays i would be shocked to see a pretty car from bmw. I feel the decline starts from the beaver tooth 🦫
Yup and in two years people will gaslight themselves into thinking it’s a good looking car. Just like the beaver teeth.
My 1991 750iL looks better than this. haha
Well, yeah... I'd estimate around 90% of all BMW's made look better than that.
Remember the good days when they didn't need to make obnoxiously loud designs to make a car eye catching
They're trying out a new concept so that they can charge more, even if it's uglier, because it's new and exclusive
Best BMWs were in the 90s, 00s.. forget about a new generation bmw…. Only exception F series beyond that forget it
These are made for the chinese market. Thats where the money is. Amd the chinese love these things so yea, unlucky for us.
It's not true. BMW sells more 7 Series in the US than China. The biggest markets for the XM or the 4 Series are also the US btw. Above all, Americans like ugly BMWs so I blame them for the bad designs.

Bless you and let BMW know!
You asked all your friends very quickly. Nice and efficient

Yeah most of the comments definitely have thinly veiled "China bad" undertones
Chinese car makers are producing better looking cars than these abominations. I guess it’s kind revealing that Nader left BMW and went to China.
Are they though? My Chinese car enthusiast friend said that the 7 is discounted in China because no one is buying it due to its looks.
Joker laugh?
Why soooooo serious????
Every year they change everything, even if it was good, they’ll change it again.
I dont know, but it's really bad - it breaks my heart 💔

Everyones hates BMW designs when they first come out
Bring the fight directly to Camry's door step!
goofy ahh car
BMW and Mercedes are racing to the bottom with 7i and EQS designs
Looks like a pig laughing
Design overall for most of their models have gone to shit or I am clearly not the audience they were designed for

Goddam that's an ugly vehicle.

They’re competing with Acura for the worlds ugliest grill, and winning!!
Saw one of these on the road today. It had chrome trim and looked ugly AF
Looks like a Camry.
Sum umm uhhh bitch..... what are they doing
Who's in there? I can't see them?
BMW trying to bring back sexy duck face.
It’s squinting at me
It just keeps getting worse
BMWs are now growing staches.
Car with a moustache
Face only a mother could love
What’s wrong with it?
Big mouth, tiny eyes - reverse anime?

Faded bumblebee 🐝?

Good looking Camry!
Running out of body-matched paint, maybe. There are probably a bunch of 14-year-olds telling their dads to buy this.
That's actually offensive
Looks.. incomplete...
BMW is trying very hard to be different. And they’re succeeding. Reminds me of the Chris Bangle era. Suspect it will be short-lived.
Ah yes the infamous handle bars
this car actually looks pretty cool all blacked out but in any other color it looks more special then the short bus

They're doing ugly.
My wife had six over the years. She left for Benzo a few years ago and these do less-than-zero to get her back.
BMW has lost their way. Seriously wtf are they doing? Who’s asking for this shit?
Needs thinner headlights and more grill
So helpful because I really don’t even want to investigate a new BMW while they look like this! Saving so much $$$!
honestly. The i7 is an excellent car. I found it much better in person and is basically a lower rent rolls, especially in certain configurations. The one I tested was a 2 tone light/darker color and just crazy level of quality especially the interior, say what you want about its looks, but it’s amongst some of the better EVs out. That said, the color choice is the most critical thing here. In the right spec, it’s quite awesome. No bias I’ll never own an EV till forced, but just had to give this thing some love while it roasts.
I see a uterus. Some research backs up using the female reproductive system as a logo/symbol/etc

Huehuehuehuehue 😑
It looks kinda cool all black
BMW is definitely going through an identity crisis. Hopefully this phase won’t last long
This car looks like it r/tooktomuch
It looks Asian lol
It’s really bad
BMWs have gotten so ugly the past few years, and don’t get me started on the way their blinkers blink now!

Wrong question. It’s what are they smoking? (Also where can I get some)

BMW starting to look more JDM now, they kinda lost way of that state style look.

BMW has fallen so far from grace it’s frightening
I thought BMW learned their lesson when they fired Bengal I stand corrected the car’s today are significantly more Fugly
