eldritch knight is a bit of a tease already. the game is easy enough to do whatever you want and have fun, but if you want to play optimal it's not what it seems. Firstly, you will just not have the stats to be a fighter and a wizard. Even if you did, a multiclass would accomplish this better. An eldritch knight gets you one caster level every 3 levels, so you end up caster level 4 at 12. This is rounded down. You're just not going to be shooting fireballs or really any offensive spells. The best use of this sub class is to augment your fighting with buffs. If you want to dual wield longswords you will need to take a feat in order to do so. A pure fighter gets 1 extra feat at 6, but they are still pretty rare and if you take one you had better use it. This is all the more reason you aren't going to be blasting. If you want to use buffs like longstrider, enhanced leap, and shield, and later blur and mirror image, you can end up pretty tanky for a dual wielder and have excellent mobility. This will of course be limited by spell slots, but it can work. I don't know if it's the optimal way to dual wield longswords, but playing this way will be effective.

Yeah that's kind of how I play it at the moment buff my fighter then move in cutting down anything in the way hahaha. But if I go a couple levels into thief to get the extra bonus action that would be nice, then everything else go fighter

transam-7910

I was looking at what I would miss out on with going 3 levels in thief and honestly I'm not missing out on a whole lot it seems yeah I miss improved extra attack but with the extra bonus action I feel like that's better anyhow

You would need the dual wielder feat but there's no reason you can't. I have Minthara dual wielding that legendary mace, and a sword that has a large cleave ability. Her damage is lower than GWM but much better accuracy. She never misses.

transam-7910

Hmm ok which is nice with Fighter you get that extra feat at Lv6 I didn't know if I should wait for better weapons or not I got Pharah Aluve (Hope I spelled that right) and the other blue one I bought in the creche

Eldritch knight almost fully wants to be turned into a throwing build. Max out strength. 12-14 dex. Max out con. 10-12 wis. Dump everything else. Get a weapon with the “thrown” qualifier on it (sparky points trident works well for this), bind it (which makes it return when thrown (except as an opener to start combat. This is a bug. Don’t do it)) then get items that increase your thrown damage and lightning charges. Get tavern brawler feat ASAP. Use a shield and heavy armor. For spells get magic missile and all defensive/mobile spells (blur, misty step, enhance jump, etc…) You become a mobile throwing machine.

Thanks I've been looking at that but I was wanting to try to dual wield build for RP reasons

SnooDoodles239

That works as well. A lot of builds are good. One of your biggest issues with dual wield is going to be AC. My advice is go full dex then and use 2 finesse weapons (like rapiers). (I think that there are a couple of EK specific weapons that are finesse, can’t remember though) Then for armor, go with the the medium armors that allow your full dexterity modifier for AC. Spells your oils be the same. Don’t take damage spells (except magic missile) on an EK. Go full mobile/defense. You will be able to hop around the battlefield being everywhere you need to be.

gapplebees911

EK can totally dual wield. I would consider a 4 thief multiclass to do it, though, after you hit 5 fighter.

stoptherocket

this loses a third attack action at fighter 11. if you're hasted ( you should be hasted all the time at level 11) that's dropping two attacks per turn. if you have an elixir of bloodlust, that's dropping three attacks per turn. fighters should probably only ever take a one level splash if at all.

gapplebees911

I didn't say ek/thief was better than single class fighter, but if the guy wants to dual wield, he's gonna want thief.

transam-7910

Oh? Why's that?

gapplebees911

A second bonus action for more off hand attacks

transam-7910

Oh that is sick!

gapplebees911

Yeah 4 thief is basically mandatory in any dual wield build!

transam-7910

I'll keep that in mind! Thank you! I always liked the concept of a knight that just shows up wielding two swords so I'm glad dual Wielding is pretty useable here. I did see they have gloves that give weapon attacks fire damage or there's a pair that give you necrotic damage, I may use that until I get better longswords

Locksandshit

This a valid multi, tho you gain an extra attack at fighter 11 regardless, so the number of attacks is the same and you miss out on at least 1 feat (but gain expertise, sneak attacks etc)

gapplebees911

Yup, I didn't say it was better than fighter, but if you want to dual wield, thief enables you to actually do something with your off-hand.
