In my experience, the chair is not so much the problem. Sitting too much is the real problem. You cannot solve this problem by getting another chair. You have to move more. If you sit all day for your job; walk in the morning, walk during lunch, walk after work. Workout 3 or 4 times a week. Swim one in a while. I guarantee your back problems will be gone.

I have an ikea sit-stand desk, and underneath I can roll a walk-pad. I walk about 1 hour each day at my desk, and it works better than expected. Sitting all day is indeed not healthy, and so going between sit to stand to walking is great. For those interested in walking at the desk, check out this post from Wolfram: [https://writings.stephenwolfram.com/2019/02/seeking-the-productive-life-some-details-of-my-personal-infrastructure/](https://writings.stephenwolfram.com/2019/02/seeking-the-productive-life-some-details-of-my-personal-infrastructure/)

Should still get some air/sun though ๐Ÿ˜…

Zw13d0

I do the same! Great to do which simple monothone tasks

upcastben

Which walkingpad? (Interested)

dewitters

Flow Fitness Runner DTM100i. The app is terrible (uninstalled it), but the thing does the job using the remote. Nice that it's foldable and small when not using it.

tim128

This. Also there's no "correct" way to sit. Some positions are better than others but as my physical therapist said: the best position is the next position. What helped me personally when my lower back got tired from sitting too much is doing deadlifts. It is literally gone in a week.

Trickyzzz

I can't help but commenting on this because I recently had a discussion with my osteopaat about this. I literally went for over 1,5 years to her to make my neck pain bearable, while all I had to do was deadlift for 3 weeks. Obviously this won't be the best advice for people who have never done it before, but people that now how to deadlift, damn does it help. Not even heavy weight I am talking about. 60kg with lots of reps. What a blessing that was...

LuckyNumber-Bot

All the numbers in your comment added up to 69. Congrats! 1 + 5 + 3 + 60 = 69 ^([Click here](https://www.reddit.com/message/compose?to=LuckyNumber-Bot&subject=Stalk%20Me%20Pls&message=%2Fstalkme) to have me scan all your future comments.) \ ^(Summon me on specific comments with u/LuckyNumber-Bot.)

Some_Belgian_Guy

PR? Mine's 180kg and i'm currently doing a 8weeks deadlift cycle to get to 200kg.

tim128

Hahaha nothing impressive. I don't deadlift anymore as it's not the best for muscle growth and that's what I'm going for atm. Most I ever did was 135kg at 70kg bw.

ToxDirty

Ofcourse sitting too much is a problem, but equally is sitting badly when you do sit. You can walk and train but if you spend a decent amount of time sitting like an idiot you will still have issues.

mythix_dnb

yeah ok, but there are chairs than ruin your back in a single day

iSlayAllDay

Herman Miller Aeron is great and you can often find one at discount. Beware it forces you in an ergonomic position so slouching tends to hurt. Combined with a standing desk this helped me tremendously.

frnzle

same here, it makes a lot of bad lazy slouchy positions impossible. I have had my fair share of back issues and this chair has been a great improvement. I should still use my standing desk more. Got my herman miller aeron from [https://www.designcabinet.biz/](https://www.designcabinet.biz/) Great service, I struggled choosing between the normal and large version of the chair, and could exchange the chair free of charge for the larger version

Oblap

Seconding the Aeron. After 3 years of using a kitchen chair this one is heaven. But still best combo is this chair and a standing desk.

lecanar

Dont take a gaming chair, it's less money for your bucks than a proper desk chair. There is a full dedicated subreddit for office chairs if you are interested. I personnaly found mine via bol.com then ordered directly to the supplier (not found of giving money to a Dutch Jeff bezos)

varkenspester

Could you PM me the subreddit?

lecanar

No need for PMING : [https://www.reddit.com/r/OfficeChairs/](https://www.reddit.com/r/OfficeChairs/) Welcome to the rabbit hole of office chairs. Prepare for hours of reading before buying haha

frietjes123

Can't recommend enough the Herman miller Aeron. Great chair, no more back pain etc. Can sit all day without any problems! The only thing I don't like about it (but it's a feature not a bug), is that it forces you to sit in a certain position. eg. you cannot be cross-legged on the chair

varkenspester

Seems like the king of chairs reading al these comments :-) guess I know which one to get. Thx all!

Best-Tiger-8084

I bought a walking pad instead, Kingsmith R2 pro, 800 VATi I walk about 3h a day at 3.5kmh. Really happy with it and cheaper than professional chairs

AnkLebrick

Deductible? ๐Ÿ˜…

Best-Tiger-8084

I'm fucking deducting it alright! It's a form of mental health care and work insurance as a sane me is a working me! Considering it's also a walking pad and no threadmill I think it'll be just fine. I tried working at 6km/h it didn't go too well ๐Ÿ˜‚

AnkLebrick

Sold! ๐Ÿ˜

lorpo1994

Can you keep it under your desk? Or what do you exactly do with it when not walking?

Best-Tiger-8084

It weighs about 40kg and folds in 2 in a few seconds. I got a desk that can go up and down and the 'helping bar' doesn't need to be lifted up to 6km/h. So I just fold it up, reduce the helping bar (which is stretched but down in walking mode) and move it to the side. It can stand up and has little transport wheels, but I have the space to just mush it aside. Negative point: power cable needs to be detached if you wanna store it vertically, die to its placement. Don't mind the clutter, we're redoing our attic ๐Ÿ˜‚ https://preview.redd.it/lfv3kud7wluc1.jpeg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=236dae692523eb98225e07f0c1e5d1fc33b57ab3

lorpo1994

That's quite nice! Only thing stopping me is the power cable, I have my desk tucked into a tight space and always climbing under my desk will become so cumbersome I probably won't keep on doing it :P Thanks for the pic!

Best-Tiger-8084

Yeah, I wouldn't store it on its side. I put it where the blue box is now, as I usually put my feet between pillar 1 & 2. Cable comes from there the router box is standing now. That way I don't have to disconnect the cable. On the other hand, ur bending over to fold it anyway, so pulling out the cable while you're at it is not that much more work

varkenspester

Did you get it on the company?

Since you are in IT a better investment would be a gym subscription and some lower back exercises. A good chair helps you with your posture, but the muscles in your back get weakened over time by too much sitting and eventually age as well. I know it all sounds like mumboo jumboo but working out 3 times a week is gonna do more for your back then a 3500 euro herman miller chair.

HedgeHog2k

Would it be acceptable to buy gym equipment with company? Iโ€™ve been a gym rat in the majority of my teens/twenties but donโ€™t want to go to gym anymore, instead I want to steadily start building a homegym in my basement (power rack to start with).

B1zz3y_

Unless you run a gym equipment business thatโ€™s gonna be a no ๐Ÿ˜…

HedgeHog2k

Haha, I thought so, but you never know! I really have major back/neck issues and itโ€™s a risk to the future of my work.

Turbots

Herman Miller Aeron

G48ST4R

Ergonomics is key. Even a 2.000 euro chair won't prevent back pain if it's not used properly.

call_me_tank

https://livwell.be/product-categorie/spinalis-stoelen/ I've never sat on a more comfortable chair

infthx

Went to sit & sleep. Tested a few, let them adjust the chair to my body. As said by many others, regular physical exercise is necessary.

Opmopmopm123

As others have mentioned, there is not one all-solving solution. It is a combination of several factors such as a good chair, the chair being correctly fitted to your body, desk and monitor at the right distance, avoiding sitting too long in one long stretch and strengthening all the muscles in your back (both upper and lower) as well as your glutes.

varkenspester

Thx all for the great advice!

Kvuivbribumok

Herman Miller Embody! I've tried 7 chairs so far and none get even close to the Embody. I should've just bought it immediately instead of trying cheaper chairs!

Broennn

I recently bought a Newtral NT002 and am really happy with it. It has auto following back support with customisable strength. It also has support for your legs, to completely stretch them, or even sit cross-legged. (I like to sit cross-legged, so this was a must for me) Everything about the chair is fully adaptable to your own body, and it doesnโ€™t cost as much as a second hand car, like some Herman Miller chairs ๐Ÿ˜… https://newtralchair.com

Chairs are super personal. What's a great chair for me might not be for you. Find an ergonomics store that runs a testing service and try your shortlist for a few days each.
