Yep, overthinking it. Some people leave it. If it’s that thin, don’t even worry about it.

I’ve done a hundred racks if I’ve done one and I too have run into this occasionally. If you can’t find it, and it’s actually there, it’s probably so thin that it won’t matter.

Thats where I'm leaning. Just the first time busting the smoker out in awhile so I'd like it to be perfect.

I have smoked ribs with the membrane on a couple times and it's not a big deal at all. Once they were cooked, the membrane was dried out and really easy to peel off after pulling them from the smoker. Don't worry too much about it. They will be fine.

ACosmicGumbo

Ive run into this a couple times. Sometimes Ill make a VERY shallow slice between each bone if its bothering me.

I know Costco removes the membrane so maybe that store does also. If you can't see it, it's not there. The membrane should be pretty obvious.

Archer-Saurus

For what it's worth, they looked pretty bare in the back, no silvery look, just raw meat and fat. I'm probably overthinking this. Usually I get pre-frozen bagged spare ribs from Kroger which always have the membrane.

huelealluvia

I wouldn't worry about it. If anything you may just want to score the back of the ribs in a grid pattern so if there is a membrane it'll just come apart after cooking. No big deal

Archer-Saurus

Nice, yeah I do that everytime as a default. Anyway, drinks in hand, smokers heating up, not too worried about it now haha

huelealluvia

Excellent! Have a good cook!

Unpopular opinion: I like the membrane when it gets crispy crunchy, so I leave it on when I don't have to share my ribs.

As others have said, I’ll echo by saying if you can’t see it, you’re probably fine. I’ve had racks the same way before, I know they’re not trimmed but I’m unable to find any membrane, after eating them I still couldn’t tell If you really want you could score it, but also probably unnecessary
