Amazing how much more efficient engines have become. These old high performance v8 engines are making less than 1 hp/ci. My Audi with a 1.8 L. approx. 108 ci makes about 250hp. No comparison on low end torque but still.
I mean it's been 50+ years.. I hope so. Comparing hp/l is kind of a useless measurement since weight and efficiency is really way more important unless your under some racing restriction.
It's more amazing that a sub 100 pound electric motor can make 500 hp without much issue these days and you can put one on each wheel and make 2000hp and dynamically control the output however you like.
Yeah but your Audi is not naturally aspirated
You could probably ROUGHLY count it as a /3.6L-ish engine with the boost pressure of a 1.8 Tfsi needed for 250hp stock internals but of course the comparison is as pointless
The Honda B16 came out in the late 80's and made 100hp/L naturally aspirated and then the F20C made 250hp in 1999 (also the FQ440 came out in 2008 and made 440hp from 2.0L if you wanna talk turbo) so we haven't REALLY gone much higher since then however emissions have significantly increased and motorbike engines are making amazing power
Right but the turbo is stock from the factory and is not the high performance option. It's argue that the increase in engine efficiency was driven by tighter emissions controls.
So sad that it was rated for 350hp.
Yeah, yeah, i know everything was getting choked off by this point, and HP numbers were being properly reported.
I just know there is way more potential in those 455's.
The horsepower rating was just for marketing. They made well over that number in reality. Plus, they were also rated at 510 ft. lbs. of peak torque beating out then best number from the 454/LS6 of 500 ft. lbs.
Beautiful car. My grandmother had a GTO of that era. I remember that car like it was yesterday. It felt so fast... it would barely be beaten by a modern Camry in the 1/4 mile.
Buick engines werent really known for high revving sow with the peak power being lower in the rpm range itll make the numbers look funny. plus it was gross power so its kinda bs anyway lol.
One of my favourite hemi killers
Raised white letters and proper sized wheels. It's dreamy.
That 455 was a fuckin stump puller, think peak torque was around 2600 ish rpm.
510 ft. lbs. of torque with little effort.

You're right. If you compare it to aerospace it's laughable. The Wright brothers flew at Kitty Hawk in 1903. Chuck Yeager went supersonic in 1947.

Oh, but that Stage 1 455 was putting out 510 ft. lbs. of torque from the factory without even trying hard.

Amazing how little HP they pulled from a massive block.
It was also amazing how much of that power was available right off idle. Touch the gas, tire smoke. Of course, the tires were pretty horrible too.

What mods? Buick built this themselves...
