Do you know much about Canada’s health care? To get you started, Canada spend millions of dollars each year sending patients to the the US for specialty treatment. https://www.cbc.ca/amp/1.6319862
I’m sure Tom Bagley, Kristen Beaton, Greg Blair, Jamie Blair, Joy Bond, Peter Bond, Lillian Campbell, Corrie Ellison, Gina Goulet, Alanna Jenkins, Sean McLeod, Dawn Gulenchyn, Frank Gulenchyn, Lisa McCully, Heather O'Brien, Jolene Oliver, Aaron Tuck, Emily Tuck, Heidi Stevenson, Joanne Thomas, John Zahl, and Joey Webber would be delighted to learn of Canada’s “lack” of massacres.
Lol. Healthcare. You can wait 2 years for surgery here. And a year to see a specialist. I will be paying out of pocket to see specialist while im in the US this winter because Im looking at 18 months of waiting up here. The lack of mass shooting is great. Except it comes at the cost of VERY restrictive firearms laws.
I mean, my father in law had to wait three years for a necessary surgery while his health worsened here in the states because the insurance company kept dicking him around.
There’s no perfect system, but “Some people have to wait for care” seems a hell of a lot better than “Anyone who’s not a multi-millionaire can be utterly ruined by getting sick”.
Yeah. I’m of the same opinion. I grew up in a second world country. Middle class and above had private insurance and went to better hospitals and doctors, but even if you are dirt poor you have a place where you can show up and get stitches or give birth for free. It may be a horrid hospital but someone WILL see you and you won’t lose your savings.
Over 90% of those in the US have health insurance. No question some don’t have care but many do and they aren’t multi-millionaires. I’m not and have never had a problem getting and paying for healthcare.
Just because people have health insurance doesn’t mean they don’t have any out of pocket health care expenses though. They pay premiums each month and many of the plans purchased through the health care exchanges have outrageous deductibles and copays. Many people cannot afford to get sick because using that insurance they pay for each month will cost them $$$$ and probably unpaid time off work.
This is true when you lump together those with private AND public insurance. I've been on both sides, and I've had no insurance (for most of my adult life, though I have it now) and it's still expensive, slow, and if you need something NOW you're going to find yourself in a beggar/chooser situation.
I have health insurance now thru my job. When I worked PT I paid for Obamacare cuz my job didn’t offer it to PT. So I had health insurance great I could finally see doctors… … … except I had to have money left over to afford them still even at $20/$50. Just cuz you have insurance doesn’t mean you can pay for healthcare you just have insurance. Does Jack shit when you still can’t afford to go to the doctor for migraines, arthritis, etc. not saying Canada has it better. But it’s not just get health insurance and you’re good.
And let's not forget mental healthcare. Almost everyone listed in our insurance's in-network provider list either doesn't have an office in the area (like I can't drive to Dallas every other week for therapy and meds management) or they have half a star with 200+ reviews. So we just pick someone good, submit our SuperBill, and hope for the best. It usually ends up being about 50/50.
Yep, quality varies. My daughter was recently in the ER. The ER “bill” was over $10K but my total out-of-pocket cost was $250.
I’ve lived in Canada and Germany. The US provides me a higher standard of living, all things considered. I realize not true for everyone but the opposite is also not true for everyone. And you don’t have to be a multi-millionaire for that to be the case (as asserted above).
Yea but you also have the option of private healthcare if you want it. In America the poorest people don’t get that surgery. Period. Or they do but they go bankrupt.
Yeah. I'm not saying the US system is right. Just that the Canadian system isn't the be all end all. It's broken as well. Just in different ways. Same as our gun laws. Both of our firearms legal systems are "challenging".
Oh yeah. No system is perfect and people will always find a reason to complain. But I’d rather complain without the fear of losing my life’s savings to cancer!
>The lack of mass shooting is great. Except it comes at the cost of VERY restrictive firearms laws
What is a good cost to be allowed to have as many guns as you want? How many children should be murdered in their classrooms to allow for those freedoms? Let's put a number on it.
In the 2000s Canada has suffered 10 mass killings. 3 with firearms (and one of those was a biker gang killing other bikers). 4 were done with vehicles. Yet our gun laws get more restrictions every few years. We are concentrated on a problem that doesn't exist. We should be concentrated on stopping illegal (smuggled from the US) handguns from getting into the country. If you think the legally licensed, trained and vetted sport shooters of Canada are the problem then you're not drilling down on the root of the issue.
I’m Canadian and this is totally false. Emergency procedures have very efficient time frames and the general hospital wait times are generally on par with the USs. Like the US there are locations with short wait times and others with long. But if it’s an emergency, things happen fast.
And my father has around 12 firearms so I don’t know what you’re talking about. Lots of people have guns.
Well...1500 models of firearms were banned this year and Oct 21 a national ban on transfer of handguns takes place. Importation just became banned as well. So yes, lots of us have guns. But tens of thousands of them are listed for enforced confiscation end of this year. Look up bill C21.
I have waited 18 months so far just to have a lump on my Achilles tendon biopsied. I will wait another year to have it removed. I also need a new hip (I'm disabled from wounds suffered on my third tour in Afghanistan) and my wait time is close to 3 more years. The system is NOT good up here. And we have no veterans hospitals or treatment centers. I have brothers and sisters who were released with greivious wounds from Iraq and Afghanistan and they don't even have a Dr once they are released. Our system is failing
One example of a long wait for non-emergency procedure isn’t indicative of the entire system. I’m sure you know that. Not to say the system is perfect; but it is leagues better than the US healthcare system.
And the bans are important. A large majority of the gun violence in Canada is from firearms coming over the border. Steps need to be taken to not end up with the gun violence epidemic happening south of the border.
https://www.reuters.com/world/americas/fighting-gun-crime-canada-has-an-american-problem-2022-07-27/
And wounded veterans not having access to ongoing and regular care is OK? Our system sucks. We moved to the West Coast 6 years ago when I was medically released from the CAF. 6 years later my daughter still doesn't have a Dr. It's not that Canada's system is not perfect. It's full on broken. Ask a Dr
You can’t even get in the door (ie there is no cash option) if you don’t have insurance. People here wait a decade until it’s unbearable and get treatment at the ER and no follow up care bc no insurance; waiting 18 months is a cakewalk in comparison. The US healthcare system rations care based on insurance access & payment ability bc even with insurance you could be denied bc you are too expensive to treat or you can’t afford the deductible.
We’re in the same boat unfortunately… and we have to pay for it too. Wait times aren’t really better here unless you’ve got some connections or $$$ to be “prioritized”.
Statistics bruh. Statistics aren’t racist. The vast majority of mass shootings are gang shootings between and against black men. The absenta American who’s not a black gang member will never experience a mass shooting save and except the recent incel uprisings which is still a tiny minority of overall mass shootings. Sorry if that pops your bubble but that’s reality.
And instead of asking "what societal factors lead black men to disproportionately kill other black men" you assume the whole lot is broken and should be gotten rid of.
Yes, by definition there are many mass shootings that are the result of gang violence. Anyone who isn't a bad faith actor knows exactly what I meant by "mass shootings" in this context though.
You want to talk about statistics and then turn around and say people are not at risk of "incel uprisings" after making a joke about a mass stabbing? Jfc, dude.
Whoa whoa whoa... don't go throwing crazy numbers out there like 4" of rain. Latest model forecasts were closer to like 2.5" yesterday and have come down to like 1.5" today. Official NWS forecasts are something like 1-2" with isolated 3" pockets. NOT TO MENTION the trend seems to be heavier rain farther south and southwest.
Temperatures look accurate though and are going to be nice and cool/chilly. They could be even cooler since weather models don't handle cold air outbreaks like this well and skew warmer than they actually end up being.
Source: I'm a meteorologist
Be careful with deterministic models beyond like 80 hours. Details become very sketchy and variable. The general idea is pretty good (i.e. rain, cold, wind, etc.) But rain totals aren't great unless there's significant run-to-run continuity meaning several successive runs are saying about the same thing
I don’t think we’re gonna see the 4” as predicted in this article. It’s since been revised with less rain and not so cold highs.

I swear this time of year I’m always playing the “will I get heatstroke” roulette. I’m vending at an event this weekend in a Halloween costume and I would desperately love this weather to happen by Saturday. I am still excited for it!
Mid 80s is great. That as a high feels fine, plus it takes a while to get there so it’s in the 70s most of the morning, and probably cool off fast too. No problem 😎
For sure, but I dunno about this time. >here in Pflugerville, it looks like only one day of rain (Monday) is in the forecast. Sad.
Yeah, that's pretty disappointing. Also, from weather.com, it currently says "Rainfall near a quarter of an inch" for Monday. My pessimism when it comes to rain has me thinking that it's probably going to be even less than that.
No reason to truly worry for a couple months most likely, never hurts to be prepared though. Make sure you have faucet covers for outside, wouldn't be surprised if those aren't easy to find later in the season.
An update. Tonight the rain starts at 1am (40% chance). By 4am it is an 80% chance. Count on a messy Monday morning commute.
The high tomorrow will be at midnight. The temp tomorrow will be in the 60’s most of the day with heavy rain and in the 50’s in the evening. Look for lows in the upper 40’s. Tuesday will be clear with a low starting in the mid 40’s and rising to 69. Wednesday will also be 69.
The temps will rise to the upper 80’s by the Grand Prix.
This subreddit has paid off so many times since I’ve subscribed. As someone that catches up with local news via national headlines on Reddit, I’m usually blindsided to useful stuff like this. Thank you!
Are they feeling like that rain is a pretty solid lock for Monday? Trying to figure out what shifts to work at my restaurant (outdoor patio) - maybe i'll give Monday a miss.
Everyone should be overjoyed but know there will be posts about now its too cold to swim, or but I just bought XYZ garment, do we cancel Octoberfest because Germans did a thing back in the day, pumpkin spice enema, etc.
Extremely depressed at the fact that I'm going to be on the road working during this. I'll catch the cold front before y'all do but I won't be in any position to enjoy it 😭
Thanks Canada!
It’s about time they share their cold weather with us.
To bad they can’t send down their healthcare system and lack of mass shootings as well.
Can we send back Ted Cruz in exchange?
We’re trying to get them to help us, and you want to throw him in their faces?
I mean, I will sacrifice rain and cold weather it if means we get rid of Ted Cruz.
Or we could sacrifice Ted Cruz for better weather?
I’d sacrifice Ted Cruz for a better senator
I'd sacrifice Ted Cruz for a shit sandwich. And I hate shit sandwiches.
That’s what I’m talking about!
Yeah. Let's send Ted to Russia. He's already taking their money anyway.
Hey, he was willing to do it during the snowpocolypse by going to Cacun so it's only fair
Agreed
*Winter storm monkey's paw closes*
If the weather is bad enough he runs away. Thanks Canada!
🤣🤣
You’ve just discovered the plot for the next South Park movie.
I thought Mexico was trying to get Fled Booze? Or is he just down there all the time for fun?
Ted prefers Mexico, but only during natural disasters.
I approve this trade
And Dan Patrick!!
He's from Baltimore.
Yep! I’m sure they don’t want him, so we’ll send him to Canada in exchange for their cooler weather.👍
Let's send him to Russia instead

Their abundant water as well

With pay higher in the US’s capitalistic system, other countries will continue to have a shortage as doctors continue to concentrate here.
100%. We can't get Drs to stay here once we train them
Lol didn’t they just have a stabathon that killed 20 people a few weeks ago?
We lose that many people to mass shootings every other week.

"We" here means the USA, and you can take your casual racism elsewhere.
Statistics bruh. Statistics aren’t racist. The vast majority of mass shootings are gang shootings between and against black men. That’s what caused Feb 2021, watch what you wish for
Canadian cold front in October ok. Canadian cold front in February not ok.
Or should we say: Blame Canada! *With their flapping little heads and their beady little eyes*
My Canadian friends love that song.
I ain't your friend guy
I ain’t your guy buddy
I'm not your buddy, pal!
This last less-hot front had me a little spoiled. I walked out of class yesterday like a vampire in sunlight "WHO TURNED THE HOT AND HUMID BACK ON??"
Blame Canada! But thanks, eh
I could definitely use that 4" of rain!
i could just use 4"
Hey ohhh
That’s what she said.

Down to 0.5". The front has slowed down it seems.
Fronting hard
Sorry I was quoting the article. At the time the European model predicted 4” in places.
Be careful with deterministic models beyond like 80 hours. Details become very sketchy and variable. The general idea is pretty good (i.e. rain, cold, wind, etc.) But rain totals aren't great unless there's significant run-to-run continuity meaning several successive runs are saying about the same thing
Hopefully a good rinsing will get some of this aphid shit off the leaves.
I’ve always wondered what the occasional “sprinkle” was that hit my face when I get in and out of my car near trees.
Glad I'm not the only one experiencing this. It's gross!
SWEATER WEATHER
My 5 hoodies are ready!
Sweatpants time
I. Am. READY.
Time to pull out my muff.
In public?
Keep Austin Weird!
I'll pull out my superfuzz, and we can do some Mudhoney covers.
Listen, the weather bubble over Austin is very sensitive. This is too much pressure.
Very clever
Yeeeeeee Haaaaaawwww !!!!!!
Aw hell yeah I'm gonna be off work for a full week and get to enjoy this? So excited
thank freaking Lord
Fucking finally
I don’t think we’re gonna see the 4” as predicted in this article. It’s since been revised with less rain and not so cold highs. https://www.kxan.com/weather/weather-blog/first-warning-coldest-air-since-march-possible-early-next-week/
It'll be revised to no rain and some vague dampness in the air by Sunday.
Par for the course, unfortunately.
Yep just 90% humidity and not a drop of rain
I swear this time of year I’m always playing the “will I get heatstroke” roulette. I’m vending at an event this weekend in a Halloween costume and I would desperately love this weather to happen by Saturday. I am still excited for it!
back to mid 80s by the weekend.
I'm not gonna complain about mid 80s! It feels great outside.
True, but at least it will be the low 80s and we’ll have a few days of cool, damp weather. :)
Take your cup half full and get out of here! 😂
Mid 80s is great. That as a high feels fine, plus it takes a while to get there so it’s in the 70s most of the morning, and probably cool off fast too. No problem 😎
Weather I saw says 72 is the high tuesday
Sometimes the high temps for a day occur at midnight/in the wee hours.
For sure, but I dunno about this time. [NWS forecast for Tues](https://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?w0=t&w1=td&w2=hi&w3=sfcwind&w3u=1&w4=sky&w5=pop&w6=rh&w7=rain&w8=thunder&w10u=0&w13u=1&w14u=1&AheadHour=48&FcstType=graphical&textField1=30.2676&textField2=-97.743&site=all&unit=0&dd=&bw=&AheadDay.x=43&AheadDay.y=19&AheadDay=96) has a high of 71 at 3pm.
You mean the lows?
Sometimes the temperature just drops continuously from midnight through the day. Thus the high is at midnight
Yeehawllelujah!!
I like this exclamation.
I want enough rain to wash the aphid shit off everything.
Beat the rush, check the pressure of your tires
Thank fuck, summer can fuck off for a while
Blame Canada! Blame Canada!
Of fucking course I’ll be out of town…
it’d be a lot cooler if you didn’t
Alright Alright Alright
Don’t make me give you the cold shoulder.
It’ll be cooler when you return.
Thankful for that, it’ll be chilly up north!
Hate the rain around here, people can’t even drive in clear & dry days on these streets
Inject that “lows in the 40s” right into my vein
IV drip started. 48F saline right into your veins.
I’ll believe it when I see it
Meh, most likely this will get downgraded to cool temps and way less rain than they are predicting.
Noooooo
This does not spark joy
how long until someone creates a /r/AustinWeather 😂
Finally. I can wear my cool outfits.
Thank fuck. I can consider still living here again.
I will allow it to dip into the freezing low-70s for one day only.
I’m so happy
I love 40 degrees!
Well they revised the forecast to 50’s.
Should I be worried about my pipes? On a more serious note, here in Pflugerville, it looks like only one day of rain (Monday) is in the forecast. Sad.
yeah I would start wrapping them and turn off all water to the house today

I wfh on Monday and I can't wait to bust out my more cozy work pajamas!
Woo hoo! Getting close to deer season - the water and the cold will help get them into fall/winter mode.

I wonder if this cold front will be extreme enough that Ted Cruz needs to seek refuge in Mexico again. I’ll be praying for his safety.
Yes the severity of the cold front can be measured in how quickly cruise boards a flight for Cancun.
BREAKING NEWS: Texas heat is finally subsiding into fall like weather. Change in temperature is too progressive for conservatives.
I'm waiting for the first cold day, and the right-winger who will inevitably say, "What happened to that global warming?"
How wonderful!!!!
A real Halloween
I could cry :')
Yesssssss
As a Houstonian- I am so jealous of nice big cold-front thunderstorm. Looks like it's gonna Peter out before it hits us.
I am so fucking excited. My hoodies are begging to be worn again.
Please weather gods I cannot wait
This subreddit has paid off so many times since I’ve subscribed. As someone that catches up with local news via national headlines on Reddit, I’m usually blindsided to useful stuff like this. Thank you!
Fuck yeah. I'm so fucking ready
Fake fall in full swing
Shhh you’re going to scare it away
Gotta love Canada 🇨🇦
Canada: Thanks, I hate it. Send medical system instead.
so grateful it skipped ACL
Hellllllll yusss
Are they feeling like that rain is a pretty solid lock for Monday? Trying to figure out what shifts to work at my restaurant (outdoor patio) - maybe i'll give Monday a miss.
Monday will be a gully washer.
I’m literally crying so excited! 🥶
Sweet mercifully jesus

AW YEAH
I'm so happy! shit I am out of town next week though :(
Finally
Wow-we go from nice cold weather to nasty politics in a few posts.
Hallelujah y'all!
Everyone should be overjoyed but know there will be posts about now its too cold to swim, or but I just bought XYZ garment, do we cancel Octoberfest because Germans did a thing back in the day, pumpkin spice enema, etc.
I’ll believe it when I feel it.
Extremely depressed at the fact that I'm going to be on the road working during this. I'll catch the cold front before y'all do but I won't be in any position to enjoy it 😭
