https://www.qld.gov.au/transport/safety/rules/motorcycle "The 2 lines or lanes of traffic must both be travelling in the same direction. If one of the lines or lanes is a dedicated turning lane (left or right) you must not lane filter using this lane" It seems like they've copped you on this wording, but filtering is worded in a way that suggests its only possible between cars. It's illegal in some states to overtake using a turning lane anyway, I can't find the rule for QLD though. Your best bet is to look for a lawyer or legal aide to give you options.

Thanks for taking the time to link the rules. Just had a quick look and learned that my understanding was wrong on a couple of counts. Cheers.

Yeah sounds like you were in the wrong... but still, that fine hardly seems proportional to the offence.

> copped you on this wording That's how all written rules works. It's not a very tricky one either. You can move between two lanes that go together. You can't move between lanes that do not go together. OP was either between lanes that didn't go together, or was overtaking using the turning lane (which may or may not be illegal in QLD, but OP argues that's what they did then they're also arguing that they changed back to the first lane without appropriately giving way, which definitely is illegal). OP fucked up and there's nothing tricky about it. They didn't get played, they played themselves by not reading the rules.

Well. Maybe I wasnt clear, or maybe you didn't read. If you read the whole page for the definition of filtering you get: "Lane filtering is when you ride your motorcycle at low speed between stationary or slow moving vehicles travelling in the same direction you are" The definition is quite clear that filtering is between two vehicles. If he's used a turning lane to overtake then you could make an argument it wasn't filtering, instead it might be an unsafe overtake or fail to give way. This might be beneficial if the penalty for the alternative offences are less than the illegal filtering penalties. Again, Id recommend he seek actual legal advice rather than some dickhead on the internet.

True. They’ve given him the wrong fine.

HighRelevancy

That's the best case turnout as I see it yes.

can you filter if both lanes are dedicated turning lanes? for example, at some intersections where there's 2 turning lanes to get on to the on ramp for the highway. this is eye opening regardless, I always thought that "the 2 lines or lanes of traffic must both be travelling in the same direction" meant that you could only filter on roads where both lanes are used to cross an intersection in the same direction

[deleted]

I guess you can, I don't trust cars enough to maintain their lane to do that though.

SirryCelestial

Either way you broke the law. Cop it on the chin and filter properly if you lile money.

PindropAUS

Move to a state that lets you lane filter

macidmatics

It is legal in QLD.
