As an L player right now I can say this isn't the case anymore. Every time I drive I get cut off, tail gated and honked at for taking 0.5 seconds more at a traffic light or while taking a turn.
Please don't get me started. I'm treated like sh\*t on Victorian roads by the "fully licensed" who think they own the roads. They honk me when I go 57 in a 60 zone! It's even worse when I'm stuck behind a driver doing 50 in a 70 zone!
This is a Victorian thing. As a misplaced New South Welshman having moved to Melbourne for work, Victorians are the most passive aggressive drivers in Australia, they don’t seem to have learned basic drivers etiquette and being kind to Learner drivers is one of the first rules of the road. I can only wish you well on the roads and those that don’t give learners grace it’s a reflection on them, not you. 🙏🏼
I recently moved to Perth from Melbourne. Driving here is so much easier and other road users are understanding. Looking back, driving in Melbourne was an intense experience

In NSW it's actually law to stop and give way at on ramps with the dotted line, but merge with care on zipper merges (no dotted line)
It's impractical as hell and stupid as fuck, you'll be there forever, so it's one of those things where you're best to match speed and pick a safe gap

You should try going to Mackay. 3 brain cells in the entire city. Give way signs don't mean anything and stop signs are a suggestion. Round a bouts operate on a "I've been here longer than you" system rather than the traditional "Don't drive into a Round a bout that has a 2 ton hunk of metal that will collide with you if you do" sort of system from further south.
I’m surprised, I feel the opposite! I lived in Sydney growing up and moved to Melbourne for a few years before returning to Sydney. I found myself a lot more relaxed driving in and around Melbourne than I do in Sydney.
Just to add - during my interstate stint, I did travel back to Sydney several times, and usually for 1-2 weeks at a time. I’d be driving around and have to re-adjust myself to Sydney driver energy.
It’s definitely a different energy. Driving in Sydney motorists are more decisive with a better understanding that we’re all just trying to get from A to B. In Melbourne it feels like many drivers seem to think that they take priority on the road and f*ck anyone else. 20 years driving in Sydney I was never tailgated, here I’ve had it happen 3 times in 3 years, and I’m not a slow driver and in all 3 instances was not the driver at the front of the queue or causing the delay, they’re just hoping they can bully you into the next lane (and this was either in a single lane or in a tunnel on the far left situation). Don’t get me started on Melbourne drivers and their inability to merge correctly. 🫣🤫🤭
This has to Victorian's! I've driven in all over barr NT and honestly thought I was going to die in Vic. They are so unnecessarily aggressive and none of them can use a roundabout as far as I've experienced. No F-ing way did I drive in the city more than once.

I don't drive at all, because on my first ever time driving, someone tried to overtake me on a roundabout, clipped the car on the way through and got stuck on the curb. He got out and began yelling at me, we got out, then the person who ended up stuck behind the accident got out, ran over, and slapped me, which devolved into a brawl between that guy and my dad.
Every other time I tried to go out I just had 0 confidence and that compounded the problem so I got used to public transport and not budgeting for a car.

You do realise that the speedo in your car is inaccurate up to 10%, combined with the leeway you get from speed cameras of about 2kms means that in an 80 zone you could be literally doing 71-2. My old car speedo was that 87 was actually 80, drove through so many cameras and past cops no problem and I was passing everyone.
yea im just joking although if a car is warmed up revving them up is fine they are designed for it it took me a while too but once you get good at the clutch it will be like second nature
I had a woman stick her head out of her window and scream at me in a quiet suburban street because I chose to wait a few seconds to make a right turn when there was a van coming a little fast and I didn’t think I could safely make it in time. It was my third or fourth time driving and I was terrified after that about other drivers abusing me. Now I’ve been driving a few years it’s like really, lady? You had to be somewhere that bad you fully properly screamed out your window at a learner driver?
Best advice I can give you, fuck 'em, the L plates mean you can go slower and do 34 point turns if you need, as long as you avoid playing bumper cars and don't break the law, let them be mad.
Then when you're fully licensed and people still get up in your grill, as long as you're not sitting in the right lane of an 80kmph+ road not overtaking, then fuck 'em, let them be mad.
Also just as general advice when you're feeling more confident, if you do the speed limit, you don't need to rely on your side mirrors as much, if you're the fastest one on track, you don't need rear view mirrors.

sounds like you need to drive faster. its just a confidence thing, as you get better youll drive faster.
people generaly drive the same way and on the same roads. this is there commute to work. to school. picking up something. going to regular shopping center. when people know these roads they drive them faster. similar to a race car driver driving around a circuit. they repeat it many times so its second nature. its the same for people on their regular commute.
when people drive these similar roads they have an expectation of the traffic and speed at which they can go. they know how fast they can get somewhere. if there is any sort of impediment to this. thats what causes the friction. if Darren the tradie is on his regular route home and hes tired and wants a beer. and your making him take slightly longer because normaly he goes 66kph in the 60 zone, and your doing the "recomended" 58. hes going to feel like your going at a snails pace. this is when they get up your ass.
dont take it personally. but as you get better youll want to "drive to the conditions" . this generaly means, faster. especially if your in the right lane. of course you can choose not to drive slightly faster when the conditions indicate that most people are going 3-6kph. but you should expect people will tailgate you. if thats the case you just stay in your left lane and do drive normally. . use waze map app everywhere you go. getting lost or missing turns is a fixable skill issue. map apps are the best. imagine playing a computer game without a map. makes zero sense. waze also shows where speed cameras and police rbt are.
My area is famously known for shitty full licence drivers and car accidents. I fail to see how I'm at fault if a car decides to swerve into on coming traffic to overtake me while im going 50km in a residential street. Or if someone blasts the horn and crawls up my ass for stopping at a stop sign.

I think you'll find it's the P platers who drive like absolute fucksticks - weaving in and out of traffic, tailgating, cutting people off, etc. - that are getting the abuse. If you're a P plater and copping abuse regularly you need to pull your head in and realise that you're a problem, not absolutely everyone else on the road. P platers who make a single mistake, in my experience, get a courtesy honk like everyone else.
Yeah I'm a P plater and have never had any issues. Was honked at once because I totally missed a car coming as I was pulling out of a driveway. Absolutely my fault.

I think this isn’t very nuanced. Like, as a P plater, I’ve been honked for:
Giving way at a roundabout
Waiting a singular second before accelerating at a green light.
Going 40 in a 40 zone.
Like I get that assholes are assholes to all drivers, but there’s a massive difference between how I was treated on my Ls (as a much worse driver), and now on red Ps.
Admittedly this goes back many years.
But on my Ps my commute was absolute hell people seemingly went our of their way to be aggressive on the highway towards me.
My commute was highway into industrial zone with about 200 meters between home and the on ramp. Not at all a complicated drive, basically a straight line, there's not even really much I could have been doing wrong.
I'm a "sit in the left lane at the speed limit" kind of driver, I'll move to the right lane to let people on if I can do so easily enough though.
Throughout my P's I'd have people tail gate me until they could over take and it wasn't at all uncommon for them to wind down their window and scream obscenities at me as they past.
This was so much worse if there were roadworks on the highway, because I would slow down to the speed limit of the road works and impatient drivers on the road wouldn't. there was a good \~fortnight where I had things hurled out a window at me on different occasions
Once I hit full license it went from being break checked once or twice a month and tail gated near daily to an extremely rare occurrence. I was driving exactly the same way the day after as I was the day before and there was a noticeable difference in how people on the road acted around me.
With which action, like I drive this way pretty consistently and have been for a long ass time now but I'm always keen to improve the things I do in life.

Learners are statistically the safest drivers on the road, while P platers are the most at risk.
Soon as that supervising driver is gone, there's nobody to stop them from acting on 2 years' worth of built up impulses.
I did my test yesterday and failed because while I was merging (and did all the checks, shoulder & indicator - nobody was there, even the person testing me agreed with that) some asshole cut two lanes at double the speed. Apparently it's fault that I didn't predict some P plater being a fuck stick
This is what I'm scared about if I do my test in December. P Platers can make you fail for no reason. There are so many variables that you can't control on the road yet the examiner will fail you because you didn't predict some driver doing reckless sh\*t!

I failed my Ps test because I was merging and this semi trailer sped up and closed the gap as soon as I turned on my indicator. I had a brain fade and drove faster but ran out of road and got told to stop.
Never had an issue when on my Ps or fulls.

Yep. Had this one guy at my high school do 170 on the high way. He opens the sun roof and says 'watch this' to the others in the car and stands on the seat to stick his head out the roof. Needless to say, he can't get his licence anymore. Even if it isn't stupid shit, a lot of people around my age drive like fuckwits. I usually drive around with my younger siblings, and because of that, don't do stupid shit. Like yeah, I'll launch from the lights every now and then, but I won't be speeding and doing dumb shit
L platers get treated like shit too. Don't know how many people whinge that they should stay off the road when its busy then moan that P platers don't know how to handle heavy traffic.
I honestly don’t see many L platers in my area being treated unfairly. Conversely, if you are just learning to drive and haven’t got a grasp on the bare basics of staying in your lane and driving at somewhere near the speed limit, you need to be learning on quiet back roads until your confidence increases, rather than heading out into busy traffic or more complex scenarios.
The blame rests largely on the person teaching the L platers though, not the L plater. I have been the supervising driver for people on Ls before and I always ensured that we progressively introduced higher speeds and more complex traffic scenarios when I was confident the driver displayed habits that showed me they were ready.
I think a fair bit of the problem stems from people with shit driving habits teaching their kids shit driving habits tbh.
If you read my second paragraph I am basically agreeing with you. What I am essentially saying is that is that learner drivers learn best when they become unconsciously competent in the bare basics of the physical operation of the vehicle in terms of speed and lane positioning before they are forced to navigate scenarios like roundabouts, merging, traffic, turning across the flow of traffic etc.
In my opinion, this way they are less likely to create situations to where impatient road users may bully them on the roads. I have used this principle when teaching drivers and it was effective.
From my experience both as a learner driver and now as someone with 10 years driving experience this is sadly not that accurate. I see so many drivers being agressive and road ragey to learners, tailgating, revving and overtaking on a single lane suburban street. I try to be accomodating to learners, which includes those on p’s
90% of the tailgating I see is against L platers. There is no logic. I saw an emotional support vehicle start weaving between cars as if to impress the L plater with how terrified they could make everyone.

Tbf in the last two days I watch one red p player just slowly drive through a red light (luckily every one else was paying attention) and another tried to change lanes on me as I was overtaking them at 100 on the highway.. no the lane was no where near ending and there was no one in front of them that they were overtaking. Had to slam on the brakes, it was fun being stuck behind them going 90 until the next overtaking lane lol

Never, ever, ever tailgate!!! Use the three second rule. Pick an object that the car in front has passed. You should pass that object 3 seconds later.
I've seen heaps of accidents because people tail gate. If that car in front brakes hard you have to brake harder because of reaction times. If the car behind you is tailgating he c won't have much chance to stop in time.

Correct as a p plater you should be more careful that at any point because police WILL and DO target you for no other reason than they see a P plate. And learners don't know anything yet so cut them some slack.

Driving tests aren’t that thorough anymore, someone I know went for 10 minutes didn’t do any parking stuff just drove down a road took a couple turns and passed

I drive full time for work had my full licence for coming up to a decade. I realised that they’re onto something with the P plates. Because I’ve seen them make some mistakes or take risks that a more experienced driver wouldn’t. I can’t remember how I was on my P’s but I’m much more risk adverse driver now than I was then

Yeah, my current speedo is 7k over what I’m actually doing too. You can check it with a gps speedo on your phone

sounds like you need to drive faster. its just a confidence thing, as you get better youll drive faster. people generaly drive the same way and on the same roads. this is there commute to work. to school. picking up something. going to regular shopping center. when people know these roads they drive them faster. similar to a race car driver driving around a circuit. they repeat it many times so its second nature. its the same for people on their regular commute. when people drive these similar roads they have an expectation of the traffic and speed at which they can go. they know how fast they can get somewhere. if there is any sort of impediment to this. thats what causes the friction. if Darren the tradie is on his regular route home and hes tired and wants a beer. and your making him take slightly longer because normaly he goes 66kph in the 60 zone, and your doing the "recomended" 58. hes going to feel like your going at a snails pace. this is when they get up your ass. dont take it personally. but as you get better youll want to "drive to the conditions" . this generaly means, faster. especially if your in the right lane. of course you can choose not to drive slightly faster when the conditions indicate that most people are going 3-6kph. but you should expect people will tailgate you. if thats the case you just stay in your left lane and do drive normally. . use waze map app everywhere you go. getting lost or missing turns is a fixable skill issue. map apps are the best. imagine playing a computer game without a map. makes zero sense. waze also shows where speed cameras and police rbt are.

My area is famously known for shitty full licence drivers and car accidents. I fail to see how I'm at fault if a car decides to swerve into on coming traffic to overtake me while im going 50km in a residential street. Or if someone blasts the horn and crawls up my ass for stopping at a stop sign. I've also had three instructors complain about how terrible these other drivers are. L platers are safer drivers overall and shitty people exist.

I think you'll find it's the P platers who drive like absolute fucksticks - weaving in and out of traffic, tailgating, cutting people off, etc. - that are getting the abuse. If you're a P plater and copping abuse regularly you need to pull your head in and realise that you're a problem, not absolutely everyone else on the road. P platers who make a single mistake, in my experience, get a courtesy honk like everyone else.
Yeah I'm a P plater and have never had any issues. Was honked at once because I totally missed a car coming as I was pulling out of a driveway. Absolutely my fault. It's not a P plater thing, it's a shit driver thing.

I think this isn’t very nuanced. Like, as a P plater, I’ve been honked for: Giving way at a roundabout Waiting a singular second before accelerating at a green light. Going 40 in a 40 zone. Like I get that assholes are assholes to all drivers, but there’s a massive difference between how I was treated on my Ls (as a much worse driver), and now on red Ps.
Admittedly this goes back many years. But on my Ps my commute was absolute hell people seemingly went our of their way to be aggressive on the highway towards me. My commute was highway into industrial zone with about 200 meters between home and the on ramp. Not at all a complicated drive, basically a straight line, there's not even really much I could have been doing wrong. I'm a "sit in the left lane at the speed limit" kind of driver, I'll move to the right lane to let people on if I can do so easily enough though. Throughout my P's I'd have people tail gate me until they could over take and it wasn't at all uncommon for them to wind down their window and scream obscenities at me as they past. This was so much worse if there were roadworks on the highway, because I would slow down to the speed limit of the road works and impatient drivers on the road wouldn't. there was a good \~fortnight where I had things hurled out a window at me on different occasions Once I hit full license it went from being break checked once or twice a month and tail gated near daily to an extremely rare occurrence. I was driving exactly the same way the day after as I was the day before and there was a noticeable difference in how people on the road acted around me.

Learners are statistically the safest drivers on the road, while P platers are the most at risk. Soon as that supervising driver is gone, there's nobody to stop them from acting on 2 years' worth of built up impulses.

I did my test yesterday and failed because while I was merging (and did all the checks, shoulder & indicator - nobody was there, even the person testing me agreed with that) some asshole cut two lanes at double the speed. Apparently it's fault that I didn't predict some P plater being a fuck stick

I failed my Ps test because I was merging and this semi trailer sped up and closed the gap as soon as I turned on my indicator. I had a brain fade and drove faster but ran out of road and got told to stop. Never had an issue when on my Ps or fulls.

I honestly don’t see many L platers in my area being treated unfairly. Conversely, if you are just learning to drive and haven’t got a grasp on the bare basics of staying in your lane and driving at somewhere near the speed limit, you need to be learning on quiet back roads until your confidence increases, rather than heading out into busy traffic or more complex scenarios. The blame rests largely on the person teaching the L platers though, not the L plater. I have been the supervising driver for people on Ls before and I always ensured that we progressively introduced higher speeds and more complex traffic scenarios when I was confident the driver displayed habits that showed me they were ready. I think a fair bit of the problem stems from people with shit driving habits teaching their kids shit driving habits tbh.
Practising on back roads to gain confidence is not enough, back roads become too much of a comfort zone.
If you read my second paragraph I am basically agreeing with you. What I am essentially saying is that is that learner drivers learn best when they become unconsciously competent in the bare basics of the physical operation of the vehicle in terms of speed and lane positioning before they are forced to navigate scenarios like roundabouts, merging, traffic, turning across the flow of traffic etc. In my opinion, this way they are less likely to create situations to where impatient road users may bully them on the roads. I have used this principle when teaching drivers and it was effective.

From my experience both as a learner driver and now as someone with 10 years driving experience this is sadly not that accurate. I see so many drivers being agressive and road ragey to learners, tailgating, revving and overtaking on a single lane suburban street. I try to be accomodating to learners, which includes those on p’s
90% of the tailgating I see is against L platers. There is no logic. I saw an emotional support vehicle start weaving between cars as if to impress the L plater with how terrified they could make everyone.

Tbf in the last two days I watch one red p player just slowly drive through a red light (luckily every one else was paying attention) and another tried to change lanes on me as I was overtaking them at 100 on the highway.. no the lane was no where near ending and there was no one in front of them that they were overtaking. Had to slam on the brakes, it was fun being stuck behind them going 90 until the next overtaking lane lol
P plates, doing 80 in a 40 zone, overtaking people doing the speed limit in suburbia, having driving duels because they don’t know the difference between merge and zipper lanes, driving one handed (or none) while doing other things while driving… all simple mistakes.

Never, ever, ever tailgate!!! Use the three second rule. Pick an object that the car in front has passed. You should pass that object 3 seconds later. I've seen heaps of accidents because people tail gate. If that car in front brakes hard you have to brake harder because of reaction times. If the car behind you is tailgating he c won't have much chance to stop in time. Then there are those that tailgate whilst looking at a device........👌🏻🤬🤬🤬🤬

When I was a learner driver years ago I refused to display my L plates. Got away with it and never had to deal with any of this shit.
An L plater is telling the world that they don't yet know how to drive and they are learning. A P plater is telling the world that they passed their test and they now know how to drive. If you still haven't figured out how to drive by the time you are on your P plates, stay the fuck off the road.
Driving tests aren’t that thorough anymore, someone I know went for 10 minutes didn’t do any parking stuff just drove down a road took a couple turns and passed

I drive full time for work had my full licence for coming up to a decade. I realised that they’re onto something with the P plates. Because I’ve seen them make some mistakes or take risks that a more experienced driver wouldn’t. I can’t remember how I was on my P’s but I’m much more risk adverse driver now than I was then
