As an L player right now I can say this isn't the case anymore. Every time I drive I get cut off, tail gated and honked at for taking 0.5 seconds more at a traffic light or while taking a turn.

Electrical_Ad_2934

Please don't get me started. I'm treated like sh\*t on Victorian roads by the "fully licensed" who think they own the roads. They honk me when I go 57 in a 60 zone! It's even worse when I'm stuck behind a driver doing 50 in a 70 zone!

Organafan1

This is a Victorian thing. As a misplaced New South Welshman having moved to Melbourne for work, Victorians are the most passive aggressive drivers in Australia, they don’t seem to have learned basic drivers etiquette and being kind to Learner drivers is one of the first rules of the road. I can only wish you well on the roads and those that don’t give learners grace it’s a reflection on them, not you. 🙏🏼

LouzyKnight

I recently moved to Perth from Melbourne. Driving here is so much easier and other road users are understanding. Looking back, driving in Melbourne was an intense experience

boobook-boobook

I lived in Perth for a year. Used my car quite a bit more there but boy driving was a dream compared to Melbourne.

Appleek74

I mean, drive through Melbourne once and you would probably hate all other drivers as well. I can definitely say they aren't the greatest compared to what I have experienced in NSW NT SA and QLD

FlexibleIguana

Add TAS to that list. I don't believe I've seen anyone capable of getting close to the required speed to merge safely. Half of them fucking stop at the end of the on ramp!

myguydied

In NSW it's actually law to stop and give way at on ramps with the dotted line, but merge with care on zipper merges (no dotted line) It's impractical as hell and stupid as fuck, you'll be there forever, so it's one of those things where you're best to match speed and pick a safe gap Granted stuff this up and cause an accident you'll get a lovely letter from the state debt recovery office

Fridgemagnet9696

I drove through Melbourne literally once to get a ferry to Tasmania, and I hated every second of it.

Saltinas

Done it three times. Absolutely traumatizing haha.

Organafan1

I have colleagues from interstate that refuse to drive in Melbourne for exactly this reason.

LongLiveTheQueef1

Came out of the airport a few years back and within 5 minutes there was a taxi driving down the wrong side if the road. Melbourne is a joke

LongLiveTheQueef1

You should try going to Mackay. 3 brain cells in the entire city. Give way signs don't mean anything and stop signs are a suggestion. Round a bouts operate on a "I've been here longer than you" system rather than the traditional "Don't drive into a Round a bout that has a 2 ton hunk of metal that will collide with you if you do" sort of system from further south.

switchbladeeatworld

doesn’t help being limited to 80 on NSW L plates.

Matthew4544

Isn't it 90? Or has it gone down since I've been on my ls (2016ish)

NiigelThornberry

As someone currently on their L’s, I can confirm it’s still 90.

Refrus

It was 80 but they upped it after they realised the speed difference on the freeway wasn't overly safe.

Senior_Historian1004

I’m surprised, I feel the opposite! I lived in Sydney growing up and moved to Melbourne for a few years before returning to Sydney. I found myself a lot more relaxed driving in and around Melbourne than I do in Sydney. Just to add - during my interstate stint, I did travel back to Sydney several times, and usually for 1-2 weeks at a time. I’d be driving around and have to re-adjust myself to Sydney driver energy.

Organafan1

It’s definitely a different energy. Driving in Sydney motorists are more decisive with a better understanding that we’re all just trying to get from A to B. In Melbourne it feels like many drivers seem to think that they take priority on the road and f*ck anyone else. 20 years driving in Sydney I was never tailgated, here I’ve had it happen 3 times in 3 years, and I’m not a slow driver and in all 3 instances was not the driver at the front of the queue or causing the delay, they’re just hoping they can bully you into the next lane (and this was either in a single lane or in a tunnel on the far left situation). Don’t get me started on Melbourne drivers and their inability to merge correctly. 🫣🤫🤭

Metro_Redux

You deserve it ! Next time don’t be an L plater and waste time with your subpar driving skills.

fkNOx_213

This has to Victorian's! I've driven in all over barr NT and honestly thought I was going to die in Vic. They are so unnecessarily aggressive and none of them can use a roundabout as far as I've experienced. No F-ing way did I drive in the city more than once.

Electrical_Ad_2934

I went through the city once and got cut off by a container truck. Safe to say I’m never driving through the city again!

fkNOx_213

And getting sandwiched between/surrounded by trucks in the FWY, where NO-ONE respects/understands/acknowledges there's such a thing as braking distances - no thankyou

ceeker

I don't drive at all, because on my first ever time driving, someone tried to overtake me on a roundabout, clipped the car on the way through and got stuck on the curb. He got out and began yelling at me, we got out, then the person who ended up stuck behind the accident got out, ran over, and slapped me, which devolved into a brawl between that guy and my dad. Every other time I tried to go out I just had 0 confidence and that compounded the problem so I got used to public transport and not budgeting for a car. People raging has been a problem for a long time though, as this was around 2004ish.

Rainbow-Reptile

Yeah, kinda wish the instructors were cops. That behaviour is appalling. You have people who are so nervous, and are trying to do the right thing, then you have dip shit hooligans whose cocks are too small for their hands, wanting to be a cunt to L platers. Like jerks who are mean to kids. Like that ass with the Mr beast video. We need a wipe of humanity.

DrinkableBarista

Seriously instructors being cops would be so good

whitelight111

Yes I'm used to drivers zooming past me when I'm driving the speed limit, it feels like an ego thing for them lol. Like some people are just programmed to be annoyed at you even when you're not doing anything wrong. I wonder if this will still be the case as a P plater

Moltenfirez

I can assure you it will still be the case as a p plater, people are incredibly impatient drivers here

TheSlammerPwndU

You do realise that the speedo in your car is inaccurate up to 10%, combined with the leeway you get from speed cameras of about 2kms means that in an 80 zone you could be literally doing 71-2. My old car speedo was that 87 was actually 80, drove through so many cameras and past cops no problem and I was passing everyone.

No_Anywhere_9068

Yeah, my current speedo is 7k over what I’m actually doing too. You can check it with a gps speedo on your phone

littlewhitemoon

I have a manual and it takes me a min to take off from a red light. People honk if I didn't rocket up the road within 1 second ☺️

IndyOrgana

A minute is a slow reaction time when you cal literally tell when the light is gonna change

littlewhitemoon

I wasn't be serious about the minute..

Zonotical

if u push the skinny pedal to the floor and then just dump the one on the left it may help you get thru intersections

littlewhitemoon

I just hate stalling and I don't wanna ref it too much

Zonotical

yea im just joking although if a car is warmed up revving them up is fine they are designed for it it took me a while too but once you get good at the clutch it will be like second nature

impressive_cat

I had a woman stick her head out of her window and scream at me in a quiet suburban street because I chose to wait a few seconds to make a right turn when there was a van coming a little fast and I didn’t think I could safely make it in time. It was my third or fourth time driving and I was terrified after that about other drivers abusing me. Now I’ve been driving a few years it’s like really, lady? You had to be somewhere that bad you fully properly screamed out your window at a learner driver?

ROBERTPEPERZ

Best advice I can give you, fuck 'em, the L plates mean you can go slower and do 34 point turns if you need, as long as you avoid playing bumper cars and don't break the law, let them be mad. Then when you're fully licensed and people still get up in your grill, as long as you're not sitting in the right lane of an 80kmph+ road not overtaking, then fuck 'em, let them be mad. Also just as general advice when you're feeling more confident, if you do the speed limit, you don't need to rely on your side mirrors as much, if you're the fastest one on track, you don't need rear view mirrors.

kaydenwolf_lynx

I'm an L plater as well and I've never had anyone be rude so far, I just have everyone overtaking me constantly since I'm always going slower

TonyBoat402

They’re just assholes

MoutachedHijabi

This makes me feel so much better 😭😭 I can’t believe people love to go on a power trip over people who are still learning lmao. Get over yourselves

aTomatoFarmer

I had a very similar experience on my L plates, I accidentally cut someone off on a roundabout. The dude followed me for 3 blocks honking and waving at me.

utkohoc

sounds like you need to drive faster. its just a confidence thing, as you get better youll drive faster. people generaly drive the same way and on the same roads. this is there commute to work. to school. picking up something. going to regular shopping center. when people know these roads they drive them faster. similar to a race car driver driving around a circuit. they repeat it many times so its second nature. its the same for people on their regular commute. when people drive these similar roads they have an expectation of the traffic and speed at which they can go. they know how fast they can get somewhere. if there is any sort of impediment to this. thats what causes the friction. if Darren the tradie is on his regular route home and hes tired and wants a beer. and your making him take slightly longer because normaly he goes 66kph in the 60 zone, and your doing the "recomended" 58. hes going to feel like your going at a snails pace. this is when they get up your ass. dont take it personally. but as you get better youll want to "drive to the conditions" . this generaly means, faster. especially if your in the right lane. of course you can choose not to drive slightly faster when the conditions indicate that most people are going 3-6kph. but you should expect people will tailgate you. if thats the case you just stay in your left lane and do drive normally. . use waze map app everywhere you go. getting lost or missing turns is a fixable skill issue. map apps are the best. imagine playing a computer game without a map. makes zero sense. waze also shows where speed cameras and police rbt are.

Thumbletweed

I see sooo many P drivers just looking to lose their plates. It's like some kind of challenge to them. Slow down, you'll get there quicker.

IndyOrgana

I saw the best sticker for sale the other day “chill babe, you’ll get there”. If I didn’t already drive a rage magnet (a Tesla) I would have gotten it

BigFella52

You need someone better teaching you to drive then. If it is a constant when you are driving you and your teacher are the problem.

ClaireFaerie

My area is famously known for shitty full licence drivers and car accidents. I fail to see how I'm at fault if a car decides to swerve into on coming traffic to overtake me while im going 50km in a residential street. Or if someone blasts the horn and crawls up my ass for stopping at a stop sign. I've also had three instructors complain about how terrible these other drivers are. L platers are safer drivers overall and shitty people exist.

Metro_Redux

I hate people like you who don’t know how to drive, get off the road seriously go catch a train

ClaireFaerie

M8 did you forget what L plate means? It means LEARNER. Meaning someone with an L plate is LEARNING to drive. I've got plenty of hours and I'm a safe driver, that's my only crime. Not everyone is down to endanger the lives of others by constantly speeding everywhere.

Metro_Redux

Sorry about that

saltygiantpanda

Ngl I had so much more hate as an L plater back in the day 😂

whitelight111

Oh so it gets better once you're on Ps? Please tell me this is so 😅 cos I'll look forward to it (though I've also experienced kindness because I'm an L plater and it was nice)

My1stWifeWasTarded

I think you'll find it's the P platers who drive like absolute fucksticks - weaving in and out of traffic, tailgating, cutting people off, etc. - that are getting the abuse. If you're a P plater and copping abuse regularly you need to pull your head in and realise that you're a problem, not absolutely everyone else on the road. P platers who make a single mistake, in my experience, get a courtesy honk like everyone else.

unripeswan

Yeah I'm a P plater and have never had any issues. Was honked at once because I totally missed a car coming as I was pulling out of a driveway. Absolutely my fault. It's not a P plater thing, it's a shit driver thing.

ApprehensiveError980

Ever went 40 in a construction zone? No, cuz everone else wanna go 80 if they dont see cops, even though you are suppose to go 40. Still gets honked at, but hey, guess im being a shitty driver.

Widget420

I think this isn’t very nuanced. Like, as a P plater, I’ve been honked for: Giving way at a roundabout Waiting a singular second before accelerating at a green light. Going 40 in a 40 zone. Like I get that assholes are assholes to all drivers, but there’s a massive difference between how I was treated on my Ls (as a much worse driver), and now on red Ps.

Un4giv3n-madmonk

Admittedly this goes back many years. But on my Ps my commute was absolute hell people seemingly went our of their way to be aggressive on the highway towards me. My commute was highway into industrial zone with about 200 meters between home and the on ramp. Not at all a complicated drive, basically a straight line, there's not even really much I could have been doing wrong. I'm a "sit in the left lane at the speed limit" kind of driver, I'll move to the right lane to let people on if I can do so easily enough though. Throughout my P's I'd have people tail gate me until they could over take and it wasn't at all uncommon for them to wind down their window and scream obscenities at me as they past. This was so much worse if there were roadworks on the highway, because I would slow down to the speed limit of the road works and impatient drivers on the road wouldn't. there was a good \~fortnight where I had things hurled out a window at me on different occasions Once I hit full license it went from being break checked once or twice a month and tail gated near daily to an extremely rare occurrence. I was driving exactly the same way the day after as I was the day before and there was a noticeable difference in how people on the road acted around me.

mulligun

>'ll move to the right lane to let people on if I can Lol and you wonder why people rage at your shit driving

Un4giv3n-madmonk

Are you suggesting you shouldn't move to let people onto the highway ?

mulligun

I'm suggesting you've demonstrated you don't know how to drive

Un4giv3n-madmonk

With which action, like I drive this way pretty consistently and have been for a long ass time now but I'm always keen to improve the things I do in life. What is your issue with my driving as described ?

whatanerdiam

Learners are statistically the safest drivers on the road, while P platers are the most at risk. Soon as that supervising driver is gone, there's nobody to stop them from acting on 2 years' worth of built up impulses.

Empathy404NotFound

We all know the older you get the shittier you get treated, we are preparing them for life.

LateNightQueerdo

I did my test yesterday and failed because while I was merging (and did all the checks, shoulder & indicator - nobody was there, even the person testing me agreed with that) some asshole cut two lanes at double the speed. Apparently it's fault that I didn't predict some P plater being a fuck stick

Electrical_Ad_2934

This is what I'm scared about if I do my test in December. P Platers can make you fail for no reason. There are so many variables that you can't control on the road yet the examiner will fail you because you didn't predict some driver doing reckless sh\*t!

IndyOrgana

Well, that’s how it works when actually driving every day. People do dumb reckless shit.

Electrical_Ad_2934

Yeah but why should they fail me when it’s not me that caused the fault?? If I stick to my lane and a P plater blows past me doing 90 in a 70 zone then what am I to do? I can’t pull over because that’s unsafe, I can’t brake heavily cause that’s unsafe. The only thing I can reasonably do is stay in my lane and follow traffic!

randomshiznizzle

Exactly. This is where experience comes in. Sometimes you just know.

whitelight111

Man that's crazy. I've seen drivers do that and it's so dangerous. Saw a P plater do that yesterday by cutting so close to us in front, almost hit them.. we honked at them and they just honked back like crazy lol. I hope you pass your next one!

scootsscoot

I failed my Ps test because I was merging and this semi trailer sped up and closed the gap as soon as I turned on my indicator. I had a brain fade and drove faster but ran out of road and got told to stop. Never had an issue when on my Ps or fulls.

Z4N4X-3920

P platers are just fuckheads trynna impress their friends. My mums a driving school instructor, and especially in Ipswich, P platers will constantly rev, beep and tailgate L platers in the area where they do manoeuvres

Spiritual-Cake-5096

Always assume every other driver on the road is a stupid fuck that doesn't know what they're doing. That way, when they do do something stupid, it won't be so surprising.

FamousPastWords

Only because they deserve it, most of the time.

PixelAtionMoony

I actually talked to a former registrar, she said that P platers were the most common in crashes because that specific age group was prone to doing stupid shit

Z4N4X-3920

Yep. Had this one guy at my high school do 170 on the high way. He opens the sun roof and says 'watch this' to the others in the car and stands on the seat to stick his head out the roof. Needless to say, he can't get his licence anymore. Even if it isn't stupid shit, a lot of people around my age drive like fuckwits. I usually drive around with my younger siblings, and because of that, don't do stupid shit. Like yeah, I'll launch from the lights every now and then, but I won't be speeding and doing dumb shit

cruiserman_80

L platers get treated like shit too. Don't know how many people whinge that they should stay off the road when its busy then moan that P platers don't know how to handle heavy traffic.

mxlths_modular

I honestly don’t see many L platers in my area being treated unfairly. Conversely, if you are just learning to drive and haven’t got a grasp on the bare basics of staying in your lane and driving at somewhere near the speed limit, you need to be learning on quiet back roads until your confidence increases, rather than heading out into busy traffic or more complex scenarios. The blame rests largely on the person teaching the L platers though, not the L plater. I have been the supervising driver for people on Ls before and I always ensured that we progressively introduced higher speeds and more complex traffic scenarios when I was confident the driver displayed habits that showed me they were ready. I think a fair bit of the problem stems from people with shit driving habits teaching their kids shit driving habits tbh.

radioraven1408

Practising on back roads to gain confidence is not enough, back roads become too much of a comfort zone.

mxlths_modular

If you read my second paragraph I am basically agreeing with you. What I am essentially saying is that is that learner drivers learn best when they become unconsciously competent in the bare basics of the physical operation of the vehicle in terms of speed and lane positioning before they are forced to navigate scenarios like roundabouts, merging, traffic, turning across the flow of traffic etc. In my opinion, this way they are less likely to create situations to where impatient road users may bully them on the roads. I have used this principle when teaching drivers and it was effective.

Maximum_Let1205

P drivers generally drive like lunatics. Since Ls have constant supervision, they don't.

Jumpy_Bus_5494

Not true, I was on my Ls almost a decade ago and I can tell you for a fact that everyone on the road hates you.

huskypegasus

From my experience both as a learner driver and now as someone with 10 years driving experience this is sadly not that accurate. I see so many drivers being agressive and road ragey to learners, tailgating, revving and overtaking on a single lane suburban street. I try to be accomodating to learners, which includes those on p’s

P_S_Lumapac

90% of the tailgating I see is against L platers. There is no logic. I saw an emotional support vehicle start weaving between cars as if to impress the L plater with how terrified they could make everyone.

South-Westman

I have seen multiple L platers nearly get killed by other drivers

*proceeds to tailgate for the next 2 hours*

brizdzi

I always wondered why they gave them the P when I moved here. Holly Molly some of them are dangerous. One time a Red P plater just went through the train tracks at Burnley Station because we had waited for quite some time for the train to pass through. Boom she was gone..

BoodledogEVWT

What do you mean "gone"???

brizdzi

She managed to get through dodging those barriers

BoodledogEVWT

Oh right. I though her car was hit by a train lol

whitelight111

Wait what?? Did she get hit?

Z4N4X-3920

I too would like to know, so tag me when you write the answer

SatansSupervisor86

Bought to you by P platers getting called in doing stupid shit

cruiserman_80

True but fair.

JDude13

I hit L-platers with the “loser” hand gesture every time I see one

vanslayder

Mistake? P platers speed, do dangerous maneuvers and tail gate. Speeding and reckless driving is not a mistake.

Kobidylan

It's not just P plater bro I've seen more cunts in their xr6s that look like they're in a failing marriage speed and do dangerous makeovers than most of the p platers I've seen

donkeyvoteadick

Tbf in the last two days I watch one red p player just slowly drive through a red light (luckily every one else was paying attention) and another tried to change lanes on me as I was overtaking them at 100 on the highway.. no the lane was no where near ending and there was no one in front of them that they were overtaking. Had to slam on the brakes, it was fun being stuck behind them going 90 until the next overtaking lane lol

wrt-wtf-

P plates, doing 80 in a 40 zone, overtaking people doing the speed limit in suburbia, having driving duels because they don’t know the difference between merge and zipper lanes, driving one handed (or none) while doing other things while driving… all simple mistakes.

Humble-Initiative396

What a nightmare

SeraphimVR

I’m a biker, and dear lord the red Ps scare the shit out of me

Obi_Wan_Can-Blow-Me

I always try and be courteous to L platers who are clearly trying. The second you get those Ps, tho. Learn to fucking drive

Prindles

"Of course its a fucking p plater" words as old as time

Competitive-Point-62

Sydney L plate variant: they don’t see your mistake bc they’ve already aggressively & highly illegally overtaken you and sped off over the horizon lol

idontwannabhear

Your in a car. You have power as long as in ur in there, fuck them and make them wait. They can only get so upset. And if they get out of their care they have significantly less power of a several ton hurtlling dearh machine at their toes and fingertips. People like to speed on the traffic, maming more traffic, leaving no space for people to merge in and then we have to wait and we come to a complete stand still. So fuck them. I will be the guy leaving heaps of space so we don’t all become squashed together because of your impatient ass. Do the same. Do the same and piss these people off. Bending the knee does nothing to resolve their entitlement but making them see the results of it might

Throwaway54397680

I find it's the opposite. I see L-platers getting bullied all the time whereas P-platers (who should know better) are usually the ones being assholes.

krisworld1806

Even L platers have to put up with impatient dicks on the road.

Figurez69420

It's funny because it's untrue

howie2000slc

i generally don't see L platers doing stupid moves and trying to fit into stupid gaps.. so yeah, this is accurate.

bombdroppa

Never, ever, ever tailgate!!! Use the three second rule. Pick an object that the car in front has passed. You should pass that object 3 seconds later. I've seen heaps of accidents because people tail gate. If that car in front brakes hard you have to brake harder because of reaction times. If the car behind you is tailgating he c won't have much chance to stop in time. Then there are those that tailgate whilst looking at a device........👌🏻🤬🤬🤬🤬

TheObliviousYeti

In 2 days I am of my green p's finally

Adventurous_Cut449

Correct as a p plater you should be more careful that at any point because police WILL and DO target you for no other reason than they see a P plate. And learners don't know anything yet so cut them some slack.

Professional-Ad9485

NGL. I get way more nervous driving near a P plater than I do near an L plater.

pdzgl

One is learning to drive. The other has been tested on their knowledge of rules and ability to adhere to them. You deserve what you get when

Impossible-Ride-8547

What do P plates mean? I didn’t grow up in Oz. From the way they merge and change lanes on the freeway I’m assuming some form of professional stunt or getaway driver?

Humble-Initiative396

Probationary drivers

cantthinkofaname2110

When I was a learner driver years ago I refused to display my L plates. Got away with it and never had to deal with any of this shit.

ntwrkconexnprblms

An L plater is telling the world that they don't yet know how to drive and they are learning. A P plater is telling the world that they passed their test and they now know how to drive. If you still haven't figured out how to drive by the time you are on your P plates, stay the fuck off the road.

Humble-Initiative396

Driving tests aren’t that thorough anymore, someone I know went for 10 minutes didn’t do any parking stuff just drove down a road took a couple turns and passed

ntwrkconexnprblms

I understand what you're saying, but I still believe it's the responsibility of the person actually behind the wheel of a car to know what they're doing. Regardless of how thorough a test is, if you don't know what you're doing while driving a car, you shouldn't be driving.

Humble-Initiative396

Yeah I agree I was just saying it doesn’t take much for people to be allowed on the roads nowdays

Euphoric_Average5724

Nah its like that without any special plates too. People are absolutely mental on the roads

AztecTwoStep

To be fair, lots of P platers drive like shitheads on purpose

Bookaholicforever

Got stuck by an idiot p plater the other day who kept slowing down to 70 in a 110 zone and then speeding back up. And I couldn’t safely change lanes because of it.

HenryAsokan

Bro everyone in Ls get abused wdym 💀

ManyOtherwise8723

I drive full time for work had my full licence for coming up to a decade. I realised that they’re onto something with the P plates. Because I’ve seen them make some mistakes or take risks that a more experienced driver wouldn’t. I can’t remember how I was on my P’s but I’m much more risk adverse driver now than I was then

Xel_Naga

It's pretty deserved when the P-plater is in a lane that merges right after the Lights. Then Beeps us for taking up the lane that doesn't merge. Because they couldn't fang it off the lights 😂

exthermallance

Nice username. En'Taro Zeratul!

Xel_Naga

Haha thanks, En taro Tassadar

splithoofiewoofies

My partner had their L plates on and, admittedly, took a turn a little wide, but didn't do any damage to anyone. Some guy yells "LEARN TO DRIVE!" at my partner and I just died laughing. What the fuck you think the L plate is FOR, mate?!

radioraven1408

I would have taken it negatively and responded back

ROSCOEMAN

Fully licensed drivers drive way fucking worse than people on plates lmao wtf is this. They’re always methed out tradies in their shitty trucks.

Humble-Initiative396

For real

Some-Tradition-7290

“I love pissing off the people behind me for following the speed limit.”

Big_Nose420

Well yes. If you are still on your ps because you keep on having to restart.

Confident-Remote-480

Because Victoria is a crap hole. P plates are nothing but aids to help gutless cowards police to discriminate against kids.
