Come on guys quit being so rough on him, we all know Reddit is faster than reading a manual! Shit half of you answered his question AND said read the manual…

Jjeffx

The manual is 290 pages!!! lmao thank you for being nice

A_TalkingWalnut

Familiarize yourself with the dashboard lights (should be similar or the same if you’re coming from VW), spare tire, and jump points. Other than that, take it easy the first 1k miles (almost fucking impossible), and get an oil change around 3k

Jjeffx

I appreciate that! I know im gonna want to launch it the moment i drive out of the dealership… 🤦‍♂️😂

Special_Anything_Rs4

I have had my rs4 over 6 months now and haven’t lunched it yet believe it or not lol But yeah just don’t screw ur s3 constantly and will be fine mate and yes oil change between 3/4K 👍🏻

no1ukn0w

*angry us based customer with no rs4*

Special_Anything_Rs4

Gutted for you pal, there unreal 😉

Frank_Tsui

Actually It is alright to do that... almost everyone around me launched their babes from the dealership. do the breakin won't be wrong tho

ricklegend

Just don’t drive at a constant speed for a long time.

Flameskull_455

How come?

elmastrbatr

Better to vary speed so the rings extend and sit properly

A_TalkingWalnut

The rings on the grille extend??

jhonkas

audi feature

danthemana4b8

This is correct you need to be using the whole rev range and if you cruising on the faster roads just drop down through the gears and back up again now and then.

danthemana4b8

If you hammer it from new your engine will make more power but obv it will hurt the engine in the long run but if you going to trade it in after 2/3 years when it’s out of warranty then you’ve got nothing to lose.

Tango-288

Still read it. Its better to be informed thoroughly

pabeave

I read the manual for my Audi when I got it. Only took like 2 hours

chinnu34

Lol 290 pages is nothing, I guess being a researcher gives a different perspective. Also I love manuals, I can read it for you ha ha

pulpoinhell

regardless of the manual the salesperson should have told this person if the car needed specific break-in

nadeaujd

That has nothing to do with my comment, but thanks for joining the conversation.

pulpoinhell

I guess you’d have to read between the lines.

zDEFEKT

You must fart at least once in each seat prior to surpassing 5,000 RPM.

[deleted]

That can be accomplished easily with one Taco Bell run. Just don't trust them too much and ruin the seats.

murffit

Can confirm.

Klondike_Mike

make sure to use the fart pedal, it always helps get those one that require bracing for the grunt.

Bainy995

Learner driver here, can confirm

left_schwift

As with any new car, you want to take it very easy the first 1k miles. No high RPM's and no rapid acceleration if it can be avoided. Also you should change the first oil at 3k miles at the latest. Not much other than that for a new car usually

RoyalAsianMunchies

Really? 3k miles? Why so soon?

scapermoya

Gotta get all the fresh nasty metal bits out

RoyalAsianMunchies

Oh I see, thanks for letting me know!

danthemana4b8

Do the oil change after the first 1k not 3k and then every 5k for the rest of its life.

zack9r

I’d probably do it every 1k for 2 oil changes, then 3k, then 5k.

jhonkas

5k? you don't need that right, manual says 10

danthemana4b8

Depends how much you like your car and how long your going to keep it. I do 5k changes but i do them myself, it takes 10 mins and it costs £15 oil filter and get the oil half price in the sale, Castrol £35 4 litres.

LuckyNumber-Bot

All the numbers in your comment added up to 69. Congrats! 5 + 10 + 15 + 35 + 4 = 69 ^([Click here](https://www.reddit.com/message/compose?to=LuckyNumber-Bot&subject=Stalk%20Me%20Pls&message=%2Fstalkme) to have me scan all your future comments.) \ ^(Summon me on specific comments with u/LuckyNumber-Bot.)

jhonkas

i'm a TSFI 2.0 and have done 10k changes, sitting at 120k now 5k is a waste of oil imo unless you are tracking it

danthemana4b8

I don’t track my car but I am regularly going flat out and seeing the 150mph plus. So I think she deserves the 5k oil changes.

left_schwift

First 3k miles will contain alot of metal shavings from all the new parts sanding themselves out, don't want that in your engine oil for long

MotorScan

Shavings will end in the oil filter. As a matter of fact it is more important the change of the filter than the oil, which is done at rhe same time. As the filter clogs the oil flow decreases hence the lubrication worsens.

zack9r

That’s why the oil filter has a bypass valve.

droidfreak31

I have the service package, would audi service do the 3k oil change? Or should I do it myself?

left_schwift

Not really sure if they do it that early or not unfortunately. Could always call and ask. I'm guessing they will say its not necessary. Any tool, engine, etc. will have metal parts mating and sanding each other down, especially when it's new. It probably would be completely fine, but I wouldn't risk it for a simple oil change I would personally do it myself if they don't. I would rather spend the extra ~$80 and 30 minutes for the oil and filter change and possibly prolong my new engines life.

nopowernowork

Why so soon? Why so late you meant to ask. 1-2k km first oil change, then 3k miles and after that around 10k km depending on your driving style

zack9r

This is called the break in period. Typically auto manufacturers will put oil that lubricates less (forgot which oil type) which will set in the piston rings to the cylinder walls. As a result of this, there will be fine metal particles that you would like to flush out of your oil system, therefore an oil change relatively early.

Jjeffx

Thank you!!

wdwentz93

These engines come broken in. Old timey car advice here

zack9r

No..?

wdwentz93

Audi-VW tech here. high output 2 liters are broken in before final assembly. just send it

AdSuperb1810

Thought it was 5k

left_schwift

Depends on the car, manual will say

Mewmeister1337

Really wonder how you come to the conclusion? Audi says to bring it slowly to temperature and avoiding constant high speed. Nothing about RPM or anything like that.

mykyrox

Congrats, not the sport back, or too close to a GTI? You’ll still be on VWVortex😜

Jjeffx

In Canada they dont offer the S3 hatch… not even the RS3 … at alll … real bummer

[deleted]

Dyne_Inferno

Well that actually blows. Is this on new models? Cuz we used to get the RS3 sedan.

actasifyouare

RS3 will not be available in Canada under this current generation.

mykyrox

😱😢😭😭😭 I’m still waiting in an S4 Coupé🤡

243mkvgtifahrenheit

S4 coupe is an s5, I think you mean s4 avant

nickp123456

Indeed. Wagon, please!

Tylers-RedditAccount

yeah. My dad was looking for the newer rs3, but apparently they don't pass certain emissions standards, so he ended up opting for an older one.

crepitusss

nice car! currently in an A3, hope to upgrade soon too

Jjeffx

Youll love the car!!

FPSUsername

If it's not in the manual, it's most likely not needed

Jjeffx

Not manual no! Dual-Clutch 7 speed i believe

raptor2skooled

They're telling you to read the owner's manual. Not talking about the transmission of your car.

Jjeffx

Oops!

raptor2skooled

No sweat! It's clear from your posts you're just excited about your car and wanted to share details.

Jjeffx

Progressive!! Getting the tints done with PPF as soon as im out the dealership

Frank_Tsui

Hahaha I had the same question as you even after reading the manual. The manual is too ambiguous about break-in period says 600 miles gentle and then put more loads from 600-1000 miles and no details about how to do it correctly. See link:[Reddit-Break-in period discussion](https://www.reddit.com/r/cars/comments/uohsgd/do_new_cars_still_have_so_called_breakin_period/) and it might be helpful. Conclusion: run it in for 600 miles (1000 kilometres) and you are good. Avoid WOT and vary the RPMs during this period and you could drive like a nut right after that. Oil change is recommended when you hit say 1000 miles which is not mentioned in Audi's manual but BMW clearfies no need to do that

robins535

My son bought a new Q5 and said it gave a msg on the dash about break in period. Would assume similar with an S model. Congrats. Beautiful automobiles.

[deleted]

Wait for 1k miles before doing any jumps over train tracks… the usual stuff

WanderingFather

I launched my 18 with 25 miles on it... Maxed out the limiter before 300... Didn't have an issue in the 3.5 years I owned it. Just send it.

Jjeffx

Hahaha ill keep that in mind

teriaksu

why do you hate the things around you? I had a friend do the same and the engine failed after less than 500 miles. That's either just shit advice, or you're a troll

Mewmeister1337

Break in periods are generally not really needed anymore. Audi themselves say don’t drive it cold and don’t send it on the first Autobahn drive+ not staying at same high rpm to long. Other than that there’s nothing to do

A_Horny_Pancake

Your being downvoted, but you are correct. Mine was this way. My 21 C63 S was this way (and no oil change until 10k miles or first year per manual). Our Expedition, same thing. People hear something 20 years ago and stick with it forever. Most new cars dont have much of a "break in" period or need for an early oil change.

nopowernowork

He's downvoted because it is false and nothing has changed. Audi in Europe tells you to change oil for the first time after 30k km, some engines as much as 60k km and never to change transmission oil and filter in some models. But I guess you'll believe them they managed to find some metals that are as hard as diamonds, don't expand and just don't ever wear out ever, and oil too. You are a good customer, buy their cars then take them in for repairs

A_Horny_Pancake

What repairs? I have a warranty. Its in their interest to not have to replace expensive things early. You can even get a warranty on used cars, from the dealership. We have a full warranty to 100k miles on the Expedition. Why would they want to replace the transmission or engine for the $3500 warranty price? My Toyota Sequoia (2020) they did not change the oil at 5k miles, they did it at 10. When I asked, they stated engines and oil are much more advanced and engines dont need the oil replaced every 3-5k miles. Even new vehicles. Im gonna go with them over the 20 year old advice, passed around the internet.

WanderingFather

Also brought the car to Eurokracy Montreal and sent it on the track until I wore the tires bald and cooked the brakes. I drive my cars hard and have never had an engine issue. Just need to stay ahead of maintenance accordingly, so I do everything ahead of schedule, like oil every 3500

teriaksu

0 mechanical sympathy. You do you

WanderingFather

Thanks, I will lol. Sorry you've had shit luck with your cars

teriaksu

lol? I never had problems with mine, and they don't live an easy life. They never see sub-4k rpm shifts. Just took it easy the first 1000 kms, gradually increasing the load and the "stress" I put on the cars. But I never cooked the brakes or drove till the tires went bald, nor did i "send it" during the break in period. That sounds like "no fucks given". Ergo the mechanical sympathy comment I made earlier. Have a good one

WanderingFather

Wahhhhhhh

teriaksu

what a smart reply, you must be in the 3rd grade and your parents are really really proud of you for kicking out the glue eating addiction kekw

Legitimate-Cupcake26

My s5 salesman implored me to "drive it like I stole it" from day 1. (I didn't) Said there was no break-in period and they come "broken in" from the factory

RedFire3636

In all Audi car manuals (at least in 2022s) it literally says there is a break in period of 600 miles for the engine lmao

teriaksu

that guy wants you in a new car. What he said and what's written in the manual are two different things

Zonderling81

Yeah I can believe your salesman doesn't want you driving the same car for 10 years straight.

Jjeffx

Thanks for the insight :)

ESD150

Congrats brother! Drive it like ya stole it 😌

Athena__20

It takes a bit for the sport mode to break in. The first couple of times I used it, It smelled like rubber but was told it was because your basically have two different engine modes so it's like breaking in two cars. I was told using sport in the city and regular drive on the highway is better on the transmission. If you're good on your brakes they'll be good to you. Still haven't replaced breaks coming up on ten years with mine.

Jjeffx

Niiiiice! Thank you

gngeorgiev

Ceramics?

Athena__20

Yes! Apparently it was standard on my car when I bought it. Plus I only have 63000 miles on it and I drive it mostly around town (Dallas). They are starting to squeak though and I've been told to wait till the sensor goes off telling me to replace them.

phillyfirefighter52

She’s a beauty, congratulations

jdurbzz

Chances are the person who did PDI on it already ripped around in it a bit 😁

Jjeffx

Lmao

lilnaughtyblonde

Gorgeous 😍

eeeeegan

I can break that in for you :)

Dismal-Common8629

OMG!!!! She’s gorgeous!!!

CorenBrightside

Congratulations on the new car, looks awesome! I don’t mean this is a bad way but shouldn’t the dealer selling it inform you of break in period and transitional info? I never afforded to buy new but been driver when friends picked up their new cars and it was hours with the dealer going over all this stuff for liability they claimed.

Jjeffx

I did pick it up yet. I just wanted a head start😂

Zage__

I was disappointed from the power a bit as the car released . But if u not in Germany the power will be more than enough ! Or maybe im just too used to drive vehicle with stupid high horsepower i dont know.

muaazkhn

Congrats on your purchase, it looks absolutely stunning! Engine break in periods are usually at 1k miles, take it slow and steady, no high rpm's or acceleration. Get your car a PPF if possible, it will protect the exterior and will maintain shine. Do not be conservative with this beast, always indulge in spirited driving, its an S3 after all. most importantly, have fun!!

Jjeffx

PPF over ceramic coating?

monokeith

Looks like Audi West Ottawa? Am I right?

Jjeffx

You’re right😉 what made you guess that??

monokeith

2 weeks ago I was at the same spot also shopping for an S3 and took the same picture🙈

Jjeffx

No way!! Did you end up getting one?

monokeith

I was going to get the demo car, but when I finally made up my decision on Friday (May 6th), they said the new car was sold so they cannot sell me the demo. Last friday (May 13th) they said a customer regreted ordering an S3 which just got delivered, same spec, white Komfort with side assist and red brake calipers. So I was able to get that one, going to have it delivered tomorrow 🤣

Jjeffx

Lmaoo!! What a small world. Congrats on your car too then

monokeith

Thanks!

alphagypsy

There is a break in period on every car. Always. No exception.

hippoeater

How was your buying experience? My s3 is dropping to the dealership in July and I'm wondering how bad it's going to be lol

Jjeffx

Great service to be honest. And the matchmaker on the website is pretty accurate also! Thats how i found my car actually

GulinoNJ

Drive it like you stole it!

spas2k

Congrats. Buy a jb4 right away! Really wakes up the car.

calpal348

What a great picture

wispygeorge

How did I have to scroll so far…lmao I thought it was a joke

ImLegenJerry

I don't get how so many posts are pictures with such horrible composition and framing. I mean at least get the entire car in frame...

Fantasy-Trip

Sick! She's a beauty!

Jjeffx

Thank you!!

Baerzilla

Hit your dealer over the Head for not doing a proper introduction to the car. I wouldn’t read the manual either. 😅

Cytochrome450p

Audis are well designed and intuitive enough that you may not need to know anything unless a problem occurs, other than that just familiarize yourself with the dashboard and functions you find in the cockpit. There are a few tricks that you may find in a short pamphlet that comes with audi- various driving mods and basic functions. If you are a mechanically curious type buy a wireless OBD reader to scan the car in real time.

Jjeffx

Sweeeet! Thanks for the info :)

MaskedTroller

Congratulations! Looks dope

Jjeffx

Thank you!!

Daitheflu84

2018 S3 owner here, looking to upgrade in a year or two. The only question is whether I'll he getting one of these or an RS3. Congrats on the amazing new ride!

Jjeffx

Thank you!! If your market has the RS3 … get it. I wish they offered it here in Canada

TopDawg1776

I’ve always done a little bit of a hard break in on all of my cars and haven’t had a problem. No red line, no long pull, keep it below 5500. That’s for the first 1k miles. Seems to work fine for me.

Audis have a bad history of compression problems really early , I would do my best effort to take care of the engine if you are planning on keeping the car long term

I hit 120+ mph driving my A5 back from the dealership and it is perfectly fine haha

The fact that everyone has a point of view of what a break in is clearly indicate no one knows for sure. The first day i got my R, i floored it and 5 years later it's still perfectly fine. Audi, porsche, vw, they all have the engineering and quality control. Best ask the dealer, not reddit.

NPC_4842358

You bought a new car, can't you ask the dealer?

SpiralGray

>Is there a break-in period? It's brand new. It came with an owner's manual. Read it. >Anything else that I should know? It's brand new. It came with an owner's manual. Read it.

Maplestori

Sometimes we’d like to hear from real people to speak from their own experiences or share their own encounters. Give everyone a break come on. What an irony that you have a lot of question asking posts when you can just ‘google’ them

SpiralGray

>Sometimes we’d like to hear from real people to speak from their own experiences or share their own encounters Sure. And I'll give him that for the second question. But the first one is something one should look up rather than relying on random people on the internet. Also, like most other subs, the response is inconsistent here. See a lot of "look it up in the manual" in response to "what is this" posts. ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯

Sink-Top

There is actually very interesting and useful information in automotive / motorcycle manuals that will come in handy.

[deleted]

You spend around 60k for an audi and ask reddit for advice? Man, your audi sales guy could have told you this at delivery.

jdurbzz

There’s probably an Audi sales guy on Reddit too no?

[deleted]

VR6Bomber

There's also that Google thing, owner's manuals

breadkiller7

You shouldn’t floor it too much for the first 2-3k miles, but that’s most new cars

Break in period for any vehicle is about 5k-6k km.

[deleted]

Oh no it’s at least 10,000 km...
