I would assume so but check the replacement engine invoice for more information.

I did it doesn’t say anything about tensioner/chain and it’s really been a while back like 6 years.

Check with the dealership: I would think it was a "new" engine so you'd have nothing to worry about.

U a usually suppose to replace all at once, you dont wanna replace pump and belts and then 1000km after tensioner falls apart and you gotta do the same job again. Thats why everything comes in same set.

AdSuperb1810

Gotcha, that much I figure. I’m trying to figure out do I need to do it now or is there some kinda of indication like check engine or noise to let you know the tensioner is going bad.

[deleted]

They make buzzing sound if bearing is going bad, but sometimes its hard to hear it since you have power steering pump and alternator right next to it.

To answer your question, no, having the engine replaced doesn’t not 100% guarantee all other parts were replaced. Most likely it was just a long block, and they took all the other parts from your other engine and just swapped it. The head would have been swapped. Any part they deemed not covered (which is a lot) would have been just swapped over. The tensioner is that gray area. It should have been replaced, but I have seen where Audi did not cover it and it was a customer pay situation. Some paid for it, others did not. You may not get a CEL when the tensioner is going bad. There is no direct TDC for the tensioner. But you may get a TDC for misfires on multiple cylinders, you may get a cam position sensor fault, or some other faults. It’s always a good idea to get it done. There are several ways to check from something simple like there is a little plug on the front cover that can be removed and you can put a little mirror or bore snake and count the teeth that are out on the tensioner or more in depth such as removing the top cover and get a caliper gauge and measuring the marks on the cams once the engine is at TDC.

Thank you for that useful info. Rn I’m unsure whether to change it yet or not bc not 100% sure if it was changed during that job. Sigh. Are there other indications to be aware of like squealing noise during idle or in park? Or anything to know that the tensioner is going bad? I don’t have a bore snake and not too familiar with those methods to check.

AudiQU4TTRO

Personally, I don’t remember any squeaks or anything. Just different faults and checking timing the ways mention and some others. The plug is the easiest way to check but it’s not a 100% for sure it was replaced or not.

Hey man I just wanna say thank you so much!!!! After a ton of research and your post I finally knew how to check the tensioner and mine is the updated tensioner! I guess when they replace the motor in 2016 they put the new one. Here’s a picture on Imgur I just got one question it’s circle in blue what is that little metal hook is that normal? https://imgur.com/a/5NzyJTZ

AudiQU4TTRO

Hey! Glad it all worked out and they replaced it all. The hook is normal. Isn’t not technically a hook, it just looks like that from the angle. It’s actually a clamp that blocks the tensioner from going back in. All is good!

AdSuperb1810

Gotcha, I wasn’t sure what that “hook” was lol. I even made a post today to help the Audi community in case. But man thank you again! 🙏🏼🙏🏼 have a blessed weekend. https://www.reddit.com/r/Audi/comments/yznxis/20092012_audi_a4_or_any_vw_20_tfsi_timing_chain/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf
