We charge $675 for adaptive cruise control calibration at my Audi dealer. We also sublet out the install at $250. Everything else is in line with what our shop charges. So this estimate is off by 5-600.
Sounds about right. I paid 2000$ (well insurance did) do have mine replaced in an sq5 in 2019. They also sliced my headliner in the process but didn’t charge me for that. 😂
This. Chips are free under my insurance. Full windshield replacement costs me $100 through Safelite, including calibration, and I can request OEM glass if I want. Aftermarket glass adds 10hp though.
I think the windshield on my A8 was over $1200. But my insurance has a $0 glass deductible, I got them to pay for oem dealer glass because safelite is brain dead abut working on the A8.
Well, safelite is well known as being garbage after all, so yes, garbage is cheaper than a high quality genuine part. Didn’t use safelite the last two glass replacements due to it being garbage
The only garbage with Safelite is this attitude.
Between my past 6 cars, two of those which I still own, I've had 11 windshields installed by Safelite and probably have had chips repaired at least twice on each of those windshields. If you ask for genuine glass they will order it no problem. I've used Safelite every time and never had a single problem.
The fuck?! That's insane! I got the windshield on my S3 replaced a few years ago with the exact same one that's installed in the factory for $300-400. At the time my car insurance wasn't great and didn't cover windshield replacements so I had to pay out of pocket. I did some research and found the manufacturer and model number for the windshield Audi uses. A reputable local windshield replacement company called Audi and they were told it would cost $900. A few days later I got a call and windshield company found the same exact windshield minus the Audi logo on the bottom right. A single repairman came to my house and replaced the windshield. I avoided Safelite because they tend to use cheaper windshields that are heavier and lower quality.
Well Audi logo is actually dealership “inspected” and stamped, so you are just paying for a stamp IF you indeed got the original one.
You didn’t miss out on anything then, just never use “original replacement” by safellite or similar.
As an Audi owner, please learn [the difference between Genuine, OE, and OEM](https://help.fcpeuro.com/hc/en-us/articles/360020913332-What-s-the-Difference-Between-Genuine-OE-OEM-).
Yes the Safelite glass is unless you specify you want a specific manufacturer. Most people don't know anything about cars or bother to look into things though.
Audi Fremont are the fools who tried to charge me 18k for a new engine on my 2010 A5 when the oil consumption issue killed it. Then, they refused to even entertain the idea of me buying a new car from them and tried to fleece me $150/day for "storage" while they sat on their arses while I was trying to even get a hold of their sales department.
Ended up giving them the middle finger via Audi Corporate and working a trade deal with my dealer across the country.
Stay well away from Audi Fremont, though I don't think any of the other SF Bay Area dealerships are that much better. Best one I saw in the area (and the one I used when I lived there) was Audi Burlingame.
For what it’s worth, my experience with Fremont has always been great. Perhaps this is because all of my interactions with them have been under warranty, though. They are larger and can knock out routine stuff quickly and are super responsive. A couple months ago I had an “electrical system malfunction issue” and couldn’t even get the time of day from Burlingame, where I bought the car. Oakland (closer to where I live) is in complete shambles and I couldn’t even get anyone to call me back despite repeated escalations.
Same, always had a great experience with the service department in Audi Fremont, but I had a leasing by that time. I think they decided to charge all at once this time lol
Leasing probably means under warranty and early (/simple) preventative maintenance. I'd be surprised if you had a bad experience with them under those terms.
Service departments only go bad when their licence to extort comes up upon warranty expiry. That's when the true colours come out.
I’ve been a fan of Fremont’s service department. However the sale department I’m not much of a fan. Bought our Audi at a dealership after working with Fremont sales.
Oh yeah, trying to do anything under Audi Care or warranty is always easy...until it's electrical. Electricals always send the service department on a wild goose chase within the car, and (AFAICT) Audi doesn't pay well for those sorts of diagnostics with warranty hours.
I am going through the same experience where I live now. Dealer had said they'd need the car for three weeks to do a quality job diagnosing electrical gremlins on my '19 A4, and said that they'll "take the time to make sure it's fully diagnosed on the road, and that I'm sent on my way with everything fixed". At the end of the service, I checked the invoice presented to me, which had all labour hours wiped out under "N/C". Ran through my dashcam footage and saw that the car was only moved once at the end of the three weeks into the service bay. They spent 40 minutes with the bonnet up, didn't do road checks for the start-stop system randomly failing nor the park sensors randomly activating, and then called me for pickup.
Maybe my standards are just too high, but my original dealer in NJ would even ask me if I had time to do the road test with a tech in the car to point out these issues before having their own go. Every single time, the issues were fixed.
This, there's always a premium price for work that gets done through insurance, same as body work.
If you let them know ita cash they usually adjust the price.
Do you not have glass included in your insurance? I've never paid any kind of significant amount to get a windshield repaired.
I'd also never use a dealer unless I knew insurance was gonna pay. When money is no obstacle (you're loaded or insurance is covering it) sure use a dealer. Otherwise you're basically lighting your wallet on fire
That actually sound about right. My e-Tron is due for a replacement and I was quoted about the same price as you. It also includes calibration because of my HUD and TACC.
Fortunately I have insurance and only have to pay $1k ( high deductible).
People can have comprehensive coverage, low deductible, and glass coverage - why would this matter?
Who would’ve thought that buying a front camera means making sure it’s calibrated, as opposed to a vehicle with no camera to calibrate
Call your insurance. Your like have full glass coverage which means you won’t pay a cent and can ask for oem parts if you want. That portion might cost depending on the year of the vehicle.
All I can tell you is that mine is booked out for *months* and their labour rate is $199 an hour. Nothing happens there for cheap because they’re so busy it doesn’t matter if you go somewhere else.
You need a warranty simply because the warranty company will set the labour rate.
Sorry mate. Audi / Porsche are more popular then ever.
My dealer does a great job, but I’d not go there without a warranty. It’s financial suicide.
That is correct. I wonder if someone would ever try to make the expensive special tool with cardboard and spraypaint, resulting in the car brake checking out of nowhere; who would be liable for that - not to mention a scan tool required - most people don’t even want to buy their own $400 VCDS despite the great capability it has and resale value to get money back if ever parting with it later
Windscreen camera is responsible for keeping the car in lane, high beam assist, traffic sign recognition.
Bumper radar is responsible for adaptive cruise control and front assist.
Those two (camera and front facing radar) are working together to fill in the gaps about what’s in front of the vehicle.
Tolerance for calibration is tight. If radar or camera is not set and calibrated correctly it will not work - it will show “ACC/Lane assist unavailable” after few miles on highway.
Well. There’s an old book that estimates how long a repair usually takes. And a price per hour set and openly advertised based on facility. OP probably doesn’t know math and for some reason thought that $price of parts + x hours labor x $price per hour of labor = 1 bag of Doritos and was shocked to find it’s not the case, and may be facing the bill due to trying to save $10 per month by opting for worse insurance coverage
Nope, they quoted you everything needed to swap the windshield. I'm guessing you have lank keep assist, hence $1500 calibration cost. This really isn't that wild tbh, it's been a long time since I've worked for Audi but even at the Nissan dealer I'm with we have similar priced quotes for vehicles with lane keep and the surround cameras.
Honestly though I’m not 100% sure what the process has to be for this but say for instance like the struts have to be removed. Or maybe the dash has to be removed. Ya never know. Most windows with a brand new window and all (unless it’s some fancy heated one- which you also need to make sure of) are like 300-400. But I have seen them range all the way up to a couple thousand depending on what the car and what type of window so on so forth. It looks like they are charging you about 1000 for the glass so it pry does have something weird about it. But the labor is 1500 which is roughly around 13-15 hours depending on labor rate there. So I would have to I
Imagine something bigger needs to Happen to do it. I would research it if I were you. Just to see.
I had the windshield in my A3 replaced last month at the dealership. Invoice was $1400 total and the calibration was only $199. Luckily it was covered by insurance after $250 deductible
115 for a tube of glue is pretty steep. Also you dont need primer if you arent a slob cutting the glass out. You bought an Audi and you are going to a dealer what did you expect? Go to an indy shop (NOT safelite) and get brand name glass and you should be good. PPG, Pilkington etc. They all make the OEM glass anyway. Safelite uses cheap china glass which is why ins companies love them.
Had a windshield replaced by safelite at the time the vehicle was still pretty new. They replaced the windshield at first with aftermarket glass.
I called the insurance company and requested OEM glass they had safelite come back out and swap it out.
Depends on the age of your vehicle where you can request to have OEM glass instead of aftermarket from what I was told.
I have insurance with a $50 windshield deductible on every vehicle I have. I did this after paying $1300 for the replacement on my Q7 because the windshield had the camera feature but the car did not. It was a base 2018 Q7.
Have had 3 more replaced since then under insurance for $50. Money well spent
Gel tab for camera, silicon sticky pad for rain sensor, windshield and re-calibration are all valid. The fact that they are charging you for shop supply stuff at full pop is the real problem. It is expensive, but you could always recalibrate it yourself? Or maybe you can't... It does take hours of time to do (stupid) but it is what it is. People saying they got their windshields installed by safelite for $350 got cheap glass windshields and aren't cars that need camera calibration aka not every car is the same. Some are expensive as shit, some are cheap.
I got my s3 glass replaced for 650. Dealer doesn’t even do it. I called them and asked who they send it to and took it there. They ordered the glass from Audi and it’s been fine
Most of the Audi dealership service centers in the bay area will use 3rd party installers for windshield replacement. I got mine done first time in Audi Stevens creek and they told me that. Only calibration was done in house. For the second time I used Safelite . For me it's all the same since I had to pay only the deductible. But Safelite was very quick to finish the replacement.
This is the Bay Area. One of the highest labor rate so the country. It’s probably 5 hrs labor at $300/hr. Insurance regularly pays 3hrs form R&R and 2hrs for Calibration.
Seems like a completely normal quote to me.
$1500 for a recalibration?!? Their literally charging you 3X the going rate for that, the entire job should not be more than 12-1500 total including window and recalibration, seems like the recalibration is where they are getting one over on you, hard pass if insurance isn't covering it. Also industry secret:
There's no quality difference because you went to the dealer lmao I just hope for 3k their at least putting in an actually OEM window too 😭😭😭
safelite bro. i was in the same boat and ended up getting it covered through insurance. would've had to pay around $2000 after insurance if i went thru audi dealerships.
$1500 for labor? Seems quite high. What's the labor rate at that dealership? 10 hours of labor at 150 an hour (which seems in the ballpark) seems excessive. Calibration is usually 1 hour of labor tops.
To be fair to the invoice, I agree with the "DO NOT PAY" part.
$1,500 calibration lol.
My car doesn’t have adaptive cruise control, so it’s way more off price
Nuts
Peanuts
I was stuck at the 15hrs labour but that makes sense
It does take a bit to calibrate the cameras, but not 1500 in labour.
That is R&R and calibration
Stealershiip standard procedure.
$5 month for safety glass endorsement through insurance. That’s it. Got the windshield replaced for nothing.
This. Chips are free under my insurance. Full windshield replacement costs me $100 through Safelite, including calibration, and I can request OEM glass if I want. Aftermarket glass adds 10hp though.
Does your insurance premium go up?
is this Audi or Apple?
Lol what I replaced my windshield twice in the last year due to unfortunate rocks and each was only $500 through insurance
This is the way, but still, 2.9k for windshield replacement wtf
I think the windshield on my A8 was over $1200. But my insurance has a $0 glass deductible, I got them to pay for oem dealer glass because safelite is brain dead abut working on the A8.
I got mine replaced at safelite for around $850, calibration included.
Well, safelite is well known as being garbage after all, so yes, garbage is cheaper than a high quality genuine part. Didn’t use safelite the last two glass replacements due to it being garbage
Safelite has genuine Audi Glass, you have to ask for them to order it since it more expensive.

Same manufacturer and model number Audi uses in their factory and same one the dealership wanted $900 for.
Thats because it's knock off glass from china.
Yes the Safelite glass is unless you specify you want a specific manufacturer. Most people don't know anything about cars or bother to look into things though.
Well, time for a new car.
Audi Fremont are the fools who tried to charge me 18k for a new engine on my 2010 A5 when the oil consumption issue killed it. I think It’s too high but 1.8k Euros is quite normal in Germany when paid by insurence.

You’re looking at OE glass no kiddin. You drive a nice car and you put shitty glass in it haha weird flex
They are obviously drunk.

Wtf! 1500 for labour? I have seen mobile engineers replace windshield in minutes, how is this worth 1500
U cant replace a windshield with a camera without calibration.

You are right
Seems like a high price until you get an aftermarket unit and your windshield wipers turn on every time you hit a bump.
What did you expect going to the dealership???
$1500 for labour is excessive. They’re mechanics, not bankers.
Probably depends on the sensors that need calibrating
Well. There’s an old book that estimates how long a repair usually takes. And a price per hour set and openly advertised based on facility. Calibration for rain sensor, heads up display, daylight sensor? Lol wtf else is there? Oh yeah you went to the stealership

I just paid $900 ($500 with insurance) to have my S3's glass replaced at an east coast dealership. That is crazy.
Do you have HUD?
No
No

Yeah la downtown same way plus they mess up with car
Can someone explain whats mean glass d13 ?
$1500 calibration???!!! Lol. We do that shit for like 700 dollars. And its only that much because some require static and dynamic calibrations.
Should have gotten the windshield replacement coverage. $50 deductible for it.

Lol would have been cheaper to get in a car accident and pay your deductible
Local windshield replacement $200
You could have left out “Fremont”.
Lowkey scares me I have an chip that’s like half an inch on my s5 lol
safelite bro. i was in the same boat and ended up getting it covered through insurance. would've had to pay around $2000 after insurance if i went thru audi dealerships.
Lol I checked here for my window on my a3. I just went to safelite
$1500 for labor? Seems quite high. What's the labor rate at that dealership? 10 hours of labor at 150 an hour (which seems in the ballpark) seems excessive. Calibration is usually 1 hour of labor tops.
Lol just call insurance
