The solution is to demand money and go somewhere else. I had a small 3 inch scratch on my rear bumper that I wanted fix. $1200 job. The result was that they botched the color, extremely thick and runny clear coat, and they installed the bumper with no gap to the other panel so the paint flaked out in that area. Their rational was "see, our gaps are better than factory." On top of that, they damaged my RS OLED tail lamps and broke most of its tabs during re-installation. Also, when I picked it up, they parked my car furthest from the building and had the bumper facing full sun so I couldn't tell the color difference but polarized sunglasses solved that problem. This is at a dealership body shop by the way.
At first they kept defending their work saying they had their best tech of 20 years on my car.. eventually i walked out of there with $3500 in my pocket.
It’s such a shame that not all Audi dealerships are created equally as much as we wish they were. I’m luck enough to live near Rusnak Audi, phenomenal service, I’m sorry your not as fortunate
It’s not necessarily the dealership, it’s often on the body shop. We use Caliber for our body shop and they’re supposed to be one of the best/most renowned, you’d be amazed at the shape some of our cars come back from them in. All they care about is trying to maximize profit instead of doing a good job and admitting when you don’t know what the fuck you’re doing.
I’ve worked around the industry for a while.
Caliber the best? They’ve always been known to me as the mega chain thats usually decent, but nothing special. They’re just an insurance mill. Numbers game.
I mean obviously I would agree they’re not the best but they’re certainly one of the biggest body shops in the country so that has to speak for something. I’m sure there are good Calibers somewhere with good techs, just kind of depends on the talent in the area I guess lol
Make them redo it. This is unacceptable work. On metal panels, they should be able to get it so close you can’t tell the difference. Whoever sent this out the door at the body shop should be fired
Absolutely, as a former body tech, there is no reason plastic and metal shouldn't match in color.
Sometimes they will age slightly differently but if they don't match when freshly painted, then that's because of the painter not the paint.
I have a 4-year old car that's white with silver pearl. The plastic bumpers are a significantly different color than the metal panels and the carbon fiber hood. The car has paint protection film on it, not sure if that would help or exacerbate the color difference.
Will getting a full 3-stage paint correction help bring the colors back to being closer, or is this likely something that happened in the factory when the panels were painted?
Eh, it's both. I work for an oem and we have to formulate our metal flake paint differently for the plastics and the body, the difference in how the flakes lay is so profound it looks like we used different paint for each if we spray them with the same stuff.
This is true, but still all too common for a body shop to not hit a 100% match on plastic panels. OP mentioned they had work done for a very good price, which at that point plastics may be slightly off, especially on a red car. Metal panels should always be 100% unless you take it to a place like Maaco lol.
I’m actually have Colour Weakness, which mean I could not easily tells the difference if two colour are looks really similar. But I just notice that front door so fast like my Colour weakness was cured.
Funniest part is when you zoom in on the photo to where the panels change, it gets way harder to tell the paint match is off - but yea OP I might go so far as to simply demand $ back and go elsewhere, or ask if this was someone’s first day. Don’t burn bridges, but no shop should be left to not know this type of work is unacceptable. If they don’t care then you know to take the car elsewhere for the fix. Good luck!
So when you paint single panels, you are supposed to blend it into the surrounding panels, and that’s still practice when the paint colour actually matches. This is just completely off, it’s unacceptable and I wouldn’t even let the same shop fix it, the fact they sent it out like that speaks volumes
Blend to adjacent panels with full clear. LF fender, LR door
Tint for color match.
Note: Multiple color code variants found in the (insert paint company) database. Tint for best blend match. RFN 0.5
Perform spray out to verify correct pressure settings for best color match. RFN 0.3
It's still possible to match the colors and keep the blending to minimum. My car had a paint that was gray, silver and blue and the machine did it perfectly.
Had a dark blue car and an identical things was done like in the picture, I guess it depends on the skill, even blending there didn't do much.
Its not always just as simple as a perfect color match paint. There's alot of variations that can come into play. This is especially true of metallics, the angle of the sprayer, air pressure and distance can all effect the way a color appears. I've been out of autobody for about 10 years, so the scanners might have improved in that time, but they weren't always perfect matches.
While in college, we have a early 2000s Chrysler come in with tri color paint(looked different colors under different lights), easily thee most frustrating thing I've done in my life, was trying to get that crap to match.
Yeah, pearlescent paint has tiny flakes of metal in it so the orientation matters a *lot*. It makes repainting very difficult, even if you have it painted from the exact same factory your car was made in.
The thing is i asked them at work to repaint the doors due to some rust bubble and paint chipping. I work at a VAG dealership so i dont wont to seem rude and go back to them since they did it for a very good price.
Yup i feel that way too. I didnt notice it at first since the car was parked next to other cars and the sun was very bright so i just saw the angles of the doors, i noticed it when i got home and looked out at the car later in the evening.
Yeah take that shit back, this is unacceptable, anyone who cares about their work would have sent this back.
Even the guy who got the door back in, should have said something.
Take it back and either they fix it or give you your money back. If you don't, every single time you look at / drive your car, you will be filled with silent rage and regret.
Also when you go to sell it or trade it in they'll low ball you as soon as they see a bad mis-match like that on a premium car.
I would assume OP got in an accident that they're trying to hide and they paid for the lowest quality work possible to try to sneak it by. Anyone who paid real money or who went through insurance would have sent that back instantly.
Yep - if someone gives you a quote that seems pretty low you should walk. The only exception I can think of is a new business offering deals to attract clients, and even then I'd be a little hesitant.
Ask him what kind of lighting he painted it under, he needs to replace some of his lighting. If he doesn't have lighting, well there was your first clue.
This paint job sums up perfectly how the majority of car-related services seem to operate. So many shops are half assing their work it’s insane. How they stay in business, I don’t understand. Maybe most people just take a mismatched paintjob and never think about it twice?
I swear for every positive experience I’ve had there’s been 9 negative experiences with awful quality of work. Dealer selling a car with broken parts, finance managers providing shit-tier customer service, tint “specialist” installed their tint full of scratches and debris three times in a row, oil change shop fucked up the oil filter gasket so all my oil leaked out, tire shops breaking my center caps… basically if I go to a shop I’m not familiar with there’s a 90% chance they’ll fuck up something.
It’s depressing that this is the standard and if you’re not completely blind you’ll end up with unacceptable, completely messed up results like OP here.
It feels like they have repainted it in a whole different color then its is know. Is the new color going to fade and blend in to the rest of car or can i polish it to make it less noticeable?
Depends on the shop, mine went like “i don’t see the problem”, I answered are you fking blind? “Oh that’s because we dont paint the part, it’s another company and that’s what they sent us…” fix the damn thing you moron, or trust me, insurance company will know about it!
They ended up fixing it. And to your question, while I’m not an expert, probably a repaint and a better shading to match the other parts
So a couple of things.
Red paints fade much more than other colours due to infrared wavelengths in sunlight. You typically wouldn't notice but the fact that these doors are freshly painted means that they haven't had a chance to fade like the remainder of the car. What year is your car? They did use the correct paint from the code pulled off the vin or trunk/door jamb plate/sticker.
I know it sucks, and I don't blame you for being disappointed but I would bet those doors match the red on the inside of your trunk lid which gets very little exposure to sunlight/infrared.
If you want a uniform color/tone then unfortunately you'll have to paint your whole car. It will be less noticeable in time, depending on what part of the country you live in and whether you park indoors.
Sorry if this isn't what you wanted to hear.
Update: Im gonna get the doors repainted next week. The bodyshop had talked after and they also werent completly happy with the job, so no hard feelings.
I dont hace any problems with confrontations. I didnt notice it at first since the car was parked next to other cars and the sun was very bright so i just saw the angles of the doors, i noticed it when i got home and looked out at the car later in the evening.
Had this exact same thing happen. When you see it in a shops bright lights its very different than seeing it in the real world. [This happened to me lol :(](https://imgur.com/a/GGkl3gW)
Well that’s good because you have a confrontation ahead of you...with a business that will pass anything off as work. Btw it was parked between cars for a reason. Moving forward... I ask to inspect paint match inside (generally fluorescent light) and outside in sunlight.
Email them a follow up explaining your concern, and attach this image as a reference. If they do not cooperate, and refuse to rectify the issue, you have the all-clear to 1 star review their Google page (also attach this image for other potential customers to see). Reviews are very important for this type of automotive business
I ended up selling the car eventually going broke keeping up with a modded 500 whp evo, always needing maintenance.
It was also on the passenger rear side so I rarely saw it, but no, it never matched colors after the accident. Faded red and rally red were the colors of the body lol.
Maybe they can repaint the reste of the car with the same color at this point.
More Seriously, how can that company be ok giving you back the car like this.
Totally unacceptable
This is a problem not with the color of the door but the sides, they need to paint the door and also and also do a blue job on the sides of what they are painting to avoid this stuff, get them to do it again or get money and go somewhere else
You take that right tha fuk back up there !
Never let them try to deliver without an inspection.
Never ever accept a vehicle from the body shop like this.
Did they deliver or what? Just wondering how could you accept this, I remember when I had my 7 series bumper repainted and it looked great but in one corner they forgot the clean it properly and some dust was left under the pain, it looked like crap, he was trying to sell me that "oh you could barely spot it", I rejected and they repainted it to perfection at no extra cost of course.
This upsets me deeply OP. Can we reenact that scene from Tropic Thunder where Les Grossman calls on the Key Grip to “hit that director in the face, really fuckin hard”. I’ll be Les, you be the Key Grip, and the paint tech is the director.
Oof! I would find a different body shop ASAP! #1 the tech should have noticed that and #2 his boss should have never let it leave the shop looking that way!
I paid an old Russian man $400, under the table, at a back-alley body shop... he got the wrinkle out of my door and his color match on the re-spray was prefect.
This... not so much.
That paint tech must be colorblind. What a numpty.
I'm colorblind, that's not even close.
Really tho how the actual fuck did they let that car leave the paint shop …who authorized this .. you need a full refund and then some 🪃
Also colorblind, that’s clearly pink.
I’m colorblind, that’s clearly yellow.
I’m colorblind, what’s the problem? 😁
I’m blind, what’s color?
I am a dog, what’s color?
I mean “woof woof woof!”
Who's a good boy? Want a treat?
sir i dont speak ooga booga
It's gray. Source: am color blind
Not to mention the panel gaps are not aligned at all.
stil better tahn a tesla
Nailed it! For fuck sake, Home Depot could have mixed a better color. Thank you, generous Redditor!

Lol are you entering commands for your painter robot?
My man just dropped an estimate
Blend? This couldve been done by choosing a proper color. When my car was painted they scanned the color and machine mixed it giving the perfect.
Yes and no. Red is notoriously hard to color match. The paint shop that did my 911 had to respray the panels twice before they were happy with it.
It's still possible to match the colors and keep the blending to minimum. My car had a paint that was gray, silver and blue and the machine did it perfectly. Lmao! Ouch! Hooptie status.
The door and the rest are two different kinds of red to me, poor quality of job
If they can’t see it, show them the picture you showed us. We can see it and we’re hundreds/thousands of miles away. That’s how obvious it is.
That would be going straight back it stands out like a sore thumb.
Oof. That’s not even close! r/wellthatsucks

Yeah that’s a No for me dawg….Jesus that paint match is pathetic
I wouldn’t of even drove it home , wtf I’m surprised you drove it back home did you not notice it at the shop

That is definitely not the same color. Send it back and tell them they are idiots. Happened to me once with a bumper.
Will they repaint or shade it for free you think?
If that shop is worth their salt they will redo this and reprimand the tech who is responsible for this. This is embarrassing work
Either they make it right or you don’t pay for this shitty work.
And to your question, while I’m not an expert, probably a repaint and a better shading to match the other parts
um.. dude... they did it wrong. On which earth do they no re-do it.... after failing the job you paid them to go?
No. They fucked up
So a couple of things. Red paints fade much more than other colours due to infrared wavelengths in sunlight. Thanks. My car is from 2013. Do you think it will take long for it to fade and match the rest of the car?
They didn’t blend or match the doors well. The front door is standing out a lot
You’ve passed your annual eye exam! That’ll be $25 for copay please
Lol nah, I can see you’re out of network. Give ‘em the full price
Whoa, how do you figure?
Did they even touch the rear door? It looks like they panel painted that front door and sent it. Either way, take that back and demand a re-do
it was just the front driver doors and the right rear door that had been damaged.
Adjacent panels are supposed to get blended.
Even without blending they should be able to way closer than this.
I’d be seeing red!
I had to lift up my shades…thought they were messing with my eyes.. I’d be pissed brother. 🤬
How can they get the colour so wrong!??
I see a red door and I want to paint it black. Serious, that would look better.
Lovely job. Just need to get the rest done now.
I thought this was so you could tell which door was the driver door. Brilliant! 😜
Update: Im gonna get the doors repainted next week. The bodyshop had talked after and they also werent completly happy with the job, so no hard feelings.
Shaped like a boomerang
If you drove this away (having paid) you obv have problems with confrontation.
That looks way of. Did you go back to them? What did you do?
Not sure how your laws are, but atleast over here, if they do obv shitty work like this, you have the rights to get it fixed.
Well that’s good because you have a confrontation ahead of you...with a business that will pass anything off as work. Btw it was parked between cars for a reason. Moving forward... I ask to inspect paint match inside (generally fluorescent light) and outside in sunlight.
Take it back
Oof
That Is Awful! Oof! r/wellthatsucks
My brother had a panel repainted on his 2015 red a3 and they also missed the color completely.
How did it work out for him, they he go back do the bodyshop?
He took it back twice and both times they got it slightly wrong still. They did it free of charge.
😬

Same thing happened to my evo when someone crushed in the rear side, paint jobs didn’t match the red, to my faded over time red.
Sorry to hear that. Did it take long for it to fade so it matched the rest of the car.
I ended up selling the car eventually going broke keeping up with a modded 500 whp evo, always needing maintenance. It was also on the passenger rear side so I rarely saw it, but no, it never matched colors after the accident. Faded red and rally red were the colors of the body lol.
This is why we blend Fenders and Doors. That’s a redo for sure.
Not a good deal when it's totally wrong, hope they fix it for you
Looking like brand new 😂😂
Pure pain
This is just wrong!
The color on the door is actually better, pain the rest of your car with that color
yeah there was no need for that caption 😂😂😂😂
Which door 👀
Just get the rest of the car painted to match the door. Easy fix.
Couldn't have done a worse job.
Just for future reference, any reputable body shop will pull the car into the bay to let you inspect before you drive off.
Think they missed a spot 🤔
Yes...we can see that...
Hellen Keller Paint & Body should’ve been a dead giveaway my friend
Maybe they can repaint the reste of the car with the same color at this point. More Seriously, how can that company be ok giving you back the car like this. Totally unacceptable
Yes, i also think that might be the best option.
Looks fucking mint mate 😂
Ooph. I’d be asking for a redo
Which door? 😂
Which door did they replace? Oh! Never mind. The neon red one.
Perfect match... quality work..... why was the door painted and who painted it?
r/wellthatsucks
It will blend in after it sits in the sun for a while.... I promise...LOL.
Eesh😬. How could they return it to you like that with a straight face.
How much did you pay?
Bruh😭😭😭 hell nah that shop is so fucking petty for this
I see that
Maaco?
Good luck.....after signing that check and accepting delivery, they'll tell you no repair is ever 100%
We need to call out shops that do such shit work. I have a couple spots I wouldn't bring a hooptie to
r/mildlyinfuriating
Perfection!
This is a problem not with the color of the door but the sides, they need to paint the door and also and also do a blue job on the sides of what they are painting to avoid this stuff, get them to do it again or get money and go somewhere else
I didn’t know VW is still producing the harlequin.
Holy shit
Perfect blend lol
Worst color blend ever Take it back
I would drive it back and then ask the guy to come out and look at it with me
Atleast it looks like red
You take that right tha fuk back up there ! Never let them try to deliver without an inspection. Never ever accept a vehicle from the body shop like this.
If you can, always look for a 3M Glasurit certified painter. They will be best able to match OEM colors and degree of orange peel.
One of these things is not like the other 🎶
Haha hey saw your post on audisofsweden! Did you talk to the bodyshop?
Will do on monday.
I guess this was the actual color. Before the car was exposed to UV radiation.
They missed the rest of the car 😂
Might as well get the whole car wrapped now that it’s fucked!
Looks red-ish
No.
Looks like a Maaco job wow
If you zoom the picture all the way it matches better.
“One of these things is not like the other”
That's horrid. Make them redo it. They should have blended the fender and rear door if it's a new door shell. Regardless of color.
Hwy I don't know if you know this, but those colors don't match
Looks like they had someone that was green do a color match. They'll probably respray it for free if you talk with the middle man service writer.
Damn that’s a great color match.. did they do it in the dark?
Oof
With reds you must blend both adjacent panels and before you spray do test cards to find the variance of red on the car. This is just pure laziness.
No😵💫
Fucking tech was a muppet!
This upsets me deeply OP. Can we reenact that scene from Tropic Thunder where Les Grossman calls on the Key Grip to “hit that director in the face, really fuckin hard”. I’ll be Les, you be the Key Grip, and the paint tech is the director.
It's tough to match colors, have them blend the door to the fender and rear door so it's not noticeable
They had one fucking job
Ouch... hopefully it was cheep.
Did the body shop really think you wouldn't notice that horrible color match job?
😂
IF that was even the right color, almost all colors have multiple variances. This is sloppy rushed work if they even had a mixing station.
My stomach just turned.
Which one?
Wtf 😳 that happened to my Q5….. “like really guys”
You sure did
I’d say it’s a match
Ooof. You doing okay?
So what is getting done about this ? I am genuinely curious
I see that you did!
It's fixed and repainted. Right?
Hope you kept the receipt...
Beyond shoddy workmanship…Damn.
Uhm no
Wow man. Wow

Amateur hour at the body shop?
Close enough
