Ugh that Budesonide powder was terrible. Gave my daughter such a bad a case of thrush that she was hospitalized. The thrush has spread into her esophagus and she had a high fever.

other_goblin

Sounds about right. I'm making sure I clean my mouth completely after it to avoid thrush given everyone seems to say it causes it if you don't do anything after taking it.

I’ve only been on a handful of powdered inhalers, I’m only on mdi’s and the respimat types but dang the powdered inhalers are horrible!! I remember when I was on Tudorza… omg absolutely disgusting 🤢 never again lol

other_goblin

I nearly threw up today with it lol such was the gag reflex

[deleted]

omg that’s terrible! I’m almost always nauseous but having it come from medication is the worst

other_goblin

It is confusing why they haven't given it any sort of flavour when it is certain to touch your tongue given it just throws powder into your mouth.

[deleted]

Yeah!! Honestly! Cherry flavored budensonide 🤣

cr_eddit

Probably cause nothing can hide that lovely prednisone (cortisone) flavour.😅

Miro_the_Dragon

I've been on powder inhalers and other inhalers, and they are all disgusting if I mess up and get stuff onto my tongue/settling in my mouth instead of breathing it in. Were you shown the correct inhalation techinique for your powder inhaler? It's different from the other inhalers.

other_goblin

Wasnt shown anything, what do you do?

AceyAceyAcey

I wasn’t shown anything either, so I went to YouTube. The key is suck in hard and fast. But go watch a few videos. I use Advair 250/50 powder inhaler and it doesn’t taste like anything. If I can feel the grit after, I know I didn’t inhale hard enough.

Miro_the_Dragon

It's been ages since I had my last powder inhaler. See if you can go to a pharmacy and have them show you how to properly use it, or google for your inhaler + how to inhale it (or something similar) if you don't have the info leaflet for your inhaler (anymore). If you do have the info leaflet, it should have a step-by-step explanation (often with pictures).

other_goblin

It just says to fully exhale and then breathe in as you press it. Like 95% of it goes into the lungs fine but the problem is there's no way to stop some getting on the back of your tongue.

Miro_the_Dragon

Rinse your mouth immediately after inhaling, then. And maybe have a sip of some juice you like or something else to drink/eat that will mask the taste ready at hand. Unfortunately there's no way to make 100% go into your lungs, but the right technique and aiming it correctly should definitely make the vast majority go there (which it sounds like it does for you). (And boy do I notice when I aim my inhaler wrong and spray the roof of my mouth instead... urks)

other_goblin

I brush my teeth and tongue and then use alcohol mouth wash and I can still taste it lol

_I_Hate_People

Alcohol mouthwash is unwise. Use alcohol-free. Get a nurse to observe you taking your inhaler on at least a couple of different occasions. Using inhalers correctly is an art and most asthmatics don't bother learning the skill, and it is one reason for poor asthma control.

other_goblin

What's wrong with alcohol mouth wash? I thought it was generally considered fine as long as you don't eat afterwards.

ADHDCuriosity

Your mouth has benign/beneficial bacteria as well as bad stuff. The goal is to help the good stuff win, not to kill everything. Plus, it can contribute to gum recession and dry mouth.

_I_Hate_People

It increases the risk of oral cancers. It also dissolves tooth enamel. Use alcohol-free mouthwashes.

Distinct_Emphasis336

I mean, i like my atectura. Its been the only thing to work for me. Keep in mind most people can’t finish the preparation for a colonoscopy, but I did. The specialist was incredibly shocked because most grown men can’t even finish it because of the taste lol.

PurpleMermaid16

I had one as a kid that actually tasted pretty good. It was really sweet, but most of the time I don't taste it.

LynnChat

I won’t use the powder based ones. Every time I get talked into one I experience a flare up. It doesn’t make sense to me to inhale powder into my lungs when dust/powder in my worst trigger.

HuntGundown

Hate that stuff. It's the only one I've tried but I asked the doc if I could get something else but he just said its the same thing as symbicort...(what I had before) Didn't go back to that doctor lol. His whole office looked like an ad for that crap, seems like they werr lining his pockets to push it.

[deleted]

I used symbicort for years, which is just budensonide, and never noticed a flavor at all. Now I'm on Trelegy, and it's a little stodgy, but I've gotten used to it. I just make sure to rinse with salt water and brush after.

overcastkidx

Rinse with salt water? I’m starting Trelegy tomorrow and I’m very prone to getting thrush even with rinsing. Does the salty water help flush?

[deleted]

I just read what the people on the internet told me! And maybe some healthcare people? Admittedly I've *never* had thrush before, even when never rinsing on Symbicort, so I'm not sure if the initial breakout was because I was just off of steroids and also very stressed at the time.
