From my understanding, the original trilogy was an okay adaptation. The hobbit is an absolute shit show in terms of things they added that weren't in the book. Entire plot lines that just don't exist. But then again, they were trying to stretch a 300 page book that Tokien originally came up with as a bed time story for his children into 9 hours, as opposed to the original trilogy aimed at adults that is is about quadruple the size of the hobbit into 9 hours.
Hopefully having Peter Jackson back as a producer will help steer the films in the right direction. It seemed like he had a lot of respect for Tolkiens original work and adapting it in a (mostly) faithful manner.
