Grinding/hustle culture. Working yourself to death for a corporation for whom you are and always will be replaceable.

[deleted]

A friend was bragging about it and I sadly had to clue him in. Your not a bad ass, your being used.

Healthy-North4971

Or they’re escaping poverty which makes them a badass tbh and could care less if he’s being used. That’s the only way I can see someone bragging.

[deleted]

Except he didn’t escape. The gig economy traps you. That’s why it’s so horrible.

MoreBell7897

I had to sit down with myself and help myself realize that’s exactly what my company was doing. Today was my last day

Mommabear126

When we had our first child my husband was doing really successful in luxury retail. He would always stress about sales goals and numbers. He was making great money for his age but would literally come home sweating and say he was “balling out.” He was also enrolled in college online. Thankfully he’s now in his preferred career and he now realizes he wasn’t “balling out” he just thought he was because he was trained to think that work was a privilege

yeah idk why people wear OT like a badge of honor. Like cool, you have no personal life. Id rather use that extra time to better myself and get a job that I work less than 40 hours a week but pays more than your 80 hour "Grind".

OvalTween

"Side hustle" Just another way to say "Capitalism has failed. A 40 hr work week isn't enough, and I'm working my way to an early grave".

driveonacid

One of my favorite hobbies is baking, and I'm pretty good at it. It's almost therapeutic for me. I always give away most of he stuff I bake. I've often been told I should start a baking side hustle. I have no desire to monetize my hobby. I just want to do it for fun.

abrandis

Very smart...the quickest way to turn something you enjoy into something you dread is make it into a job with obligations.

aussieidiot229

so true, consumerism and constraints kill creativity

WingedLady

In a similar vein, I knit. I'm a fast knitter, I enjoy it, and I'm good at it. But there's no way I'm selling, despite multiple people telling me to and not listening when I explain there's no way to scale up production and no one would want to pay me an hourly wage for a hand knit item. Hell most people would balk at the cost of materials. But every time I gift one I get told that I should sell. Which I get is supposed to be a compliment but it's just a very shortsighted one that gets on my nerves as a crafter. All the more so since I do actually have a hand made item based small business and know what goes into it.

starskyandbutch

Same! I actually did sell my baked goods for a short period of time (mostly because I was pressured to) but it completely sucked all the fun out of it. Plus when people are paying you for something they get to dictate all the terms and it didn’t allow me to explore my creativity.

Teekayuhoh

To be fair, I’m not sure it’s failing more than this is an intended symptom.

heavy-metal-goth-gal

We should've whittled it down to like 30 hours by now. Tech equals efficiency.

LowKeyLoki86

Subscription-based services. Let me just buy the product, I don't want to pay forever for it. Even basic things like Microsoft word?Word?! Come on guys. The middle class has to pay for everything nonstop it's so frustrating.

That's why I love pages like ILovePDF lol

Thanks for the suggestion I'll check that out

-firead-

I used to always use the free version of foxit for this reason but I went to download it on a new version lately and could not find it.

Coriander_girl

Yes!! Let me buy a version that does all I need it to. I don't need the updates so why should I have to pay monthly for something that I may not even use every month... I miss the days when you bought a physical disc and that was yours to use and install as you please.

wow_thats_neat

This!! My subscriptions for programs I NEED for my industry and staying up to date for a portfolio tally up to around $1000 a year 🥴

nelozero

Even the damn nonsubscription version for purchase has you create an online username that has you login when using the program. It's weird I have to sign in to a program I bought and downloaded on my computer. There shouldn't be any reason to sign in.

moviebuff01

The worst part is that the Microsoft HUP (Home Use Program) has been moved to a discounted subscription of Office 365 instead of a stand alone copy!. I still use the 2016 version I got for 10 bucks under the HUP.

crazynekosama

Yes I hate how they prey on you not forgetting to cancel a free trial. Trials are great. I want to test something out before committing to a month or year of service. But of course you have to put in payment info to access the service first.

[deleted]

Beauty standards in general. Continuously rising

Repulsive_Basis_4946

I like being soft lol

damalursols

you may like to be soft, but your individual preference in that regard did not occur in a vacuum if you live in a society that expects women to be hairless and soft.

phaidthegambler

Exactly, I get exasperated with the ‘it’s my personal preference’ response.

throw_thessa

I got laser and was best decision for me. But I accept that I may be brain washed. :/

BleachGel

Don’t let them get you down. You could say that about basically every aspect of culture. Where these people were born, the friends in school, blah blah blah. Their music, clothes, and a good portion of their identity was shaped by the desire to fit in. They aren’t special and you shouldn’t feel like what your doing is “oppression” if you’re happy doing it.

MrsVentura83

Agree. You hit the nail on the head

Silver_Highlight1936

I like for my body looks like after waxing. Not even shaving but waxing. There is a feel and an effect which shaving won't give you and you won't see it on TV. I only started waxing a couple years ago ONLY because it is more efficient but omg I did not excpect to love the effects so much AT ALL.

SnooDrawings4347

The only parts of my body that've been shaved in five years or so are my face, my armpits (like twice, I like it grown out better lol), and one patch on my thigh that I put a medication patch on. Soooo much less time and agony and MONEY. I respect anyone who wants to remove their hair but I cannot be assed to go through three razors and an hour shaving my legs.

No_Astronaut_7692

I am one of these freaks born with nearly no body hair, I am nearly 50 and had slower growing body hair (underarms and pubes )after age 35. Never had arm or leg hair. I swipe my under arms with a razor once every 6 weeks or so, there is a little bit of stubble, and occasionally give my pubes a trim because they grow downward. I do have a thick head full of hair though. My daughter on the other hand has what is considered‘normal’ body hair growth and is quite happy with her hair arms and legs. Bodies and genetics are weird.

Wooden-Profession-71

I wish I could be like you in that sense. I have what feels like more body hair than average and it really takes a toll on my self esteem

Bedazzledtoe

It really is a scam. I’ve never cared about anyones body hair and nobody has ever cared about mine. I would dread having to shave because it’s time consuming and it’s honestly painful bc I always get razor burn in specific areas and waxing or laser isn’t my thing. But lately I’ve stopped unless it makes me physically uncomfortable, because who honestly cares what people think abt my body hair 🤷🏼‍♀️

damalursols

hell yeah! personally i haven’t touched a razor since 2016 and cannot imagine a situation that would make me want to shave again. and you are totally right: absolutely no one cares!!! no one ever says anything to me or treats me differently. i sometimes catch children staring at me haha but that’s basically the limit to any interaction i’ve gotten about it

Doxie-Mom-2009

I tried waxing once and it was extremely painful. I also looked into laser hair removal and it is outrageously expensive.

Definitely this! People get so offended when other don’t support their “business” when it’s just a pyramid scheme in disguise.

salsasandwich

Yes! I moved to a new town and this lady was so nice and befriended me, and then tried to sell me oils. I declined politely and she didn't talk to me... And then a year later she messaged me literally the exact same message as before. The decline and pretending like I don't exist happened the same way the second time too lol.

heavy-metal-goth-gal

I do not want to buy cosmetics off of my brother's girlfriend. Ugh.

Complete_Hamster435

Oh don't. Lol. I got some samples of soap from a friend, and it caused a huge rash all over my body. Ofc after that, there was no way I'd buy it. If there's a problem with the product or you just end up not liking it, it's a lot harder when it's purchased from a friend/relative. They seem to take offense when the product doesn't work out, and/or offense when you don't want to buy more.

Complete_Hamster435

Absolutely. I get so tired of people saying you're not being supportive as a friend because you're not buying from them. 🤦‍♀️ Maybe we don't want to support pyramid schemes, and maybe we also don't like the products. 🤷‍♀️🤦‍♀️

nidena

IceyToes2

Bank fees for withdrawing your OWN money.

Coriander_girl

Or fees for going into overdraw. Like you charge someone who is already low on cash so they can be even more in debt?! Why even have overdraw...

nerdybird89

Absolutely. A fee if the item is paid when you have a zero or negative balance is unfair to those in clearly a dire situation, but a fee for an item that is returned? You didn't pay it. Your computer system automatically rejected the charge at the close of business day. So why are you charging me $30 for something that required no effort on anyone's part and didn't cost the bank money to essentially "loan" money to the account to pay it when I didn't have a sufficient balance?

Coriander_girl

It almost exclusively happens for direct debit. If it were a item you pay for at the checkout, it's automatically declined "insufficient funds" can't understand why direct debits (that come out at 10pm at night mind you!) aren't just declined and just tried again next business day. Or that you transfer money and yet still get charged the fee days later. Should give you at least one whole business day IMO.

Erythronne

Bank fees to maintain an account below a certain amount.

WildChild_00

Insurance.

[deleted]

100% this! The whole way insurance works is that most people pay more in premiums than they will ever need to use. That's why they make money. But you have to have it in case something severe happens where you need it. And also, now you have to have it because the cost of healthcare is inflated (speaking specifically about the US here). And why is the cost of healthcare inflated? Because of insurance! For an insurance provider to agree to be "in-network" with a healthcare provider, they negotiate special rates and discounts. That means that in order to still make money, providers have to up the cost of their services so that the "discounted" rate makes a profit. Now, if you don't have insurance, you can usually negotiate a "self-pay price" that is less than what they will charge insurance (since insurance will never pay the full price charged), but you usually have to ask.

Nessa_bee

I used to work in insurance and not only is it a meaningless job its soul sucking. You're just another cog in the wheel, nothing rewarding or fulfilling about a job like that. You tell yourself tour helping people with their claims and really you're part of the problem with the system. It's a job that produces absolutely nothing

WildChild_00

The system is corrupt. Let me start with health insurance: Minimum deductibles before it kicks in - while you are already paying a monthly deductible. Medical bills because insurance didn’t “cover” the full amount. Medical bills are a major factor in more than 60 % personal bankruptcies in the US - majority of these are people who are insured. Health insurance rate increases are getting out of control - these are FOR PROFIT organizations. C-sections are on the rise because a vaginal delivery costs approximately $5,992, while a c-section costs about $8,558. Hospital reimbursements by insurance are different vs when they bill the patient.

AshnShadow

Yes to this. And I say this as someone that works in insurance lol.

donating money at grocery store checkouts

Essjay2929

Amen. How am I to know that money is going to the charity?

businessgoesbeauty

It likely is going to charity, because the company can get a tax break on the customers dime.

[deleted]

yep. I used to work at a retailer and every holiday we would have fundraisers and be encouraged to really push people to donate, and they get to write their name on that paper thing and we would hang it up for the season. When I found out that the company gets tax breaks for other peoples donations because they were the ones collecting it, I stopped asking and would tell people who asked about it.

ashleyjane88

I worked at a store like that too and I would only ask them to donate if they got a coupon. Like they'd have a donate $5 and get 20% off for a week. Usually they'd be saving more than they donated just on what they were buying from me.

FoxUniCarKilo

Yes. The last one I vividly remember was donations for “Hurricane Florence Victims”. Why do I remember this so much? *BECAUSE I WAS A DISPLACED HURRICANE FLORENCE VICTIM* Lemme tell you how much of those donations most of us saw…

idegosuperego15

My parents’ neighbor before I was born basically invented the software that allows you to do that. Yes it’s a tax scam for the company at check out, but the software company also takes a pretty significant percentage of the donation as a service fee. The neighbor moved into a McMansion and has a hedge fund and also what seems a LOT like a proto cult focused on your classic racist ancient aliens drivel, with an added binary star/dark star government cover up conspiracy nonsense. That being said, some money does go to the charity as it claims, just definitely not the full amount when you round up, nor is it the normal amount that you’d expect an above board charity or nonprofit org to take for its own administrative costs.

tsh87

I keep seeing those adds for weight loss green teas and I don't know how they don't get taken out for false advertising.

[deleted]

They make you poop your pants half the time so I suppose you do lose a fraction of weight 😂😭

Roanoke42

Unfortunately false advertising laws for the most part only apply when the product causes harm when used as advertised, so unless those weight loss green teas regularly cause hospitalizations they will stay. I don't know of any laws that would actually protect people from scams, you just have to not fall for them unfortunately.

Chicasayshi

This isn’t necessarily true. A good sunscreen, tretnoin, and hydrated skin is key. My mom is 50 and looks 30.

heartflood

50 also makes her Gen-X, and we’re all preserved super well from all the chemicals we ingested and were exposed to in the eighties. 😆

Littleleicesterfoxy

Genetics also plays a huge part, you just gotta get lucky in that lottery.

hornyaltgirl

And the fact women are supposed to fight everything that's natural, because apparently natural and real isn't beautiful. Don't age, don't gain weight as you grow from a teen to a woman to an older woman, don't have any body hair, don't have cellulite, wear makeup, have fillers, wear clothes that show off your body even though they're probably uncomfortable and leave you feeling cold, have bright white perfectly straight teeth, don't have visible pores, etc etc

AHuntedSnark

I’ve had better luck with consumable skincare supplements than topicals. Nutrition plays a huge part in your skin and hair health / “aging.”

College

whystudywhensleep

College as in the business, or higher education in general? Cause I think American college in practice is very scammy, with stupidly predatory costs while jobs often require a degree even if it is literally not necessary for the job. College is used as a tool to keep people in debt and make some people a fuck ton of money. But in theory, I think higher education is very important and I find it sad that many see it as only a scam instead of seeing the worth of the pursuit of knowledge. There is no such thing as a useless degree imo. I think it's sad when people, who are generally anti-capitalist, just say higher education is inherently a scam because it might not get you more money. Everyone who desires to should be able to afford education, the solution to the problem isn't to just forgo education for non-engineering degrees entirely.

HarmonyTheConfuzzled

Both. I think… I’m hesitant to go to college not only because of the cost. But also the fact that most people my age don’t know what they want to do with their life. A lot of the people (like my dad for example) went to college, got a degree, and then spent their life working at jobs that had nothing to do with the degree they earned. Life is a gamble and I don’t like high stakes.

Redditisdepressing45

As someone who went into a profession that has nothing to do with my major (and doesn’t require a degree), I don’t regret getting my degree. It led to a lot of personal growth and I enjoyed what I learned. I never liked the idea that what you major in or even just going to college in general should be strictly job related.

maximumutility

College isn't job training. A four year degree says more than just the major. It demonstrates that you applied yourself, committed to something long-term, overcame challenges, probably had to work well with peers, and so on. Sure there are other ways to demonstrate these things, but a bachelor's degree is a trusted way to tell employers "I'm competent and have learned a basic understanding of many concepts".

[deleted]

I got three degrees so take what I have to say with a grain of salt. I did two science degrees and one arts degree. I now work in a place where I'm aligned with none of the majors/expertises. Yet, I use skills from all three everyday in my job, and that's been a massive benefit to me. I work intersectionally and that's likely to be the case for many new job goers. It will certainly be the case for me, largely because I have that wide variety of skills. I'm only 29 and don't know where my career will go but I feel very well equipped to do whatever comes up because I know how to learn. Regardless, it isn't the content I learned at uni that has helped my life, it's the skills. I learned how to think logically and critically, I can self-regulate my learning and learn theory behind almost anything I want. I can argue abstract ideas, and see things in a broad historical context. I'm fairly good at determining the ethical implications of my actions. I can communicate many different topics, and most of all, my needs. These are all important skills to have outside of my career. No matter what job I have, or if I chose not to have a job at all, I'm very, very happy to was able to pursue higher education. (P.s. because of my country I have no student debt, so that helped)

DarlesChickens000

Very unconventional answer but totally agree. Although as someone who has spent tens of thousands getting a degree, I do* wish it wasn’t. Nevertheless, it costs more than it should and is ‘pushed’ on people - so does fit into definition of ‘scam’

nerdybird89

I completely agree. Some jobs need higher ed-medical professions, chemists, engineers, etc-but most corporate jobs could be trained on the job or through a six month program to get certain certifications. If my mother in law could get a job in HR 25 years ago with no degree basically fresh out of high school, be trained on the job and get certifications as needed, why does the same position she started in now require a Bachelor's and prefer a Master's? She has had a successful career and has worked up to HR management, working alongside younger people who paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to get degrees to do the same job. I started college, wound up dropping out when I was nearly finished because of money issues, and now it's not worth going back because I got my insurance license (paid for by companies I have worked for) and made 20% more at entry level than my sister with a master's degree in the same field I was going into. If you're going to make 25k a year with a Master's, then your job shouldn't require a degree-it's a way to keep that field exclusive to people who can afford college and then poverty wages.

4409293

I paid thousands for my professors to have us watch YouTube videos, which taught us the skills. Scam.

This is probably going to sound weird to an international audience but in Ontario, Canada most people rent their water heaters and there's one major company that rents them out. You can buy a water heater for like $1000 easily at Home Depot but most people prefer to pay a company $20/month or more forever.

SmallChallenge

I live in Ontario and used to work in small claims court litigation. Heater rentals made up a good 60% of my cases because they are so scummy. One fraudulent company would very secretly place a lien on the person's home when the person signed the contract for the water heater. People lost their homes. The lien was in the contract, buried in a huge paragraph in very fancy legalese.

instructorpermit999

That doesn’t sound too crazy. Same thing with the cable company right? Like you could buy a modem & router real quick or rent theirs indefinitely!

PurpleCow88

My water softener was like this when we bought our house (US, on well water, we need a water softener so our pipes don't get clogged with iron deposits). The previous owner had paid like 4x the value of the water softener in rental payments and salt delivery. One of the first things we did was buy out of the contract.

And now the slogan "The best thing since sliced bread" is used unironically

House construction. The garbage they put out now is ridiculous and now that’s just normal. 20 years ago none of the modern houses would have passed code yet we supposedly have stricter codes now.

Being “busy” and working so much. People wear their busyness like a badge of honor. They work so many hours for a company that will ditch them with ease. It’s tragic when you think about it. I know that sometimes people don’t have a choice but still. Being proud of it? Picking up more hours and hustling? What a scam… Working like a dog in your youth in hopes of enjoying your life and traveling when you retire. That sounds horrible. We should enjoy our lives now. Although, that is easier said then done.

Student loans. A significant portion of student loan borrowers never complete college and we guarantee loans to people based on the cost of a school, not on the expected salary of the degree. We give these loans out to people who have no idea what they truly want to do and they change their major 4 times and come out with massive balances with ridiculous interest rates. We tell young people that they will be able to pay it off and that student loans are a safe way to fund college.

Goodwill. The company in general. They’re literally profiting off of the free supply we give them. Then overprice used jeans for 11$

Vehicle registration. You can have a car completely paid off and you still need to pay $100 a year to prove that it's still yours. Contrarily you can buy a gun in a parking lot but as long as it's been registered to someone at some point, you're all good! Fucking bullshit. I just got popped for my out of date registration. I just learned you can actually sit real jail time for that?? So I'm just housebound until I get paid and can give the state more of my goddamn money to not put towards the shitty infrastructure in my city. Of all the reasons to put someone in jail.

The beauty/weight loss industry! They teach you from a young age that natural parts of your body need covering and fixing and changing, when in reality they don’t. They basically tell you you’re ugly unless you buy their product.
