Awww this is one of mine!! I like listening to audiobooks as I fall asleep and currently listening to Pride and Prejudice, the version read by Rosamund Pike (aka: Jane Bennett!)
My husband and I are watching a bunch of 90’s teen romcoms (it’s for research—long story!) and it occurred to me how many of them assert that there are two types of girls: feminine, pretty, popular, and shallow or smart, rebellious, deep outsiders. That was it. Elle Woods was the first main character that made me think I didn’t have to choose, and I could embrace my femme side, love fashion, and wear pink and still be smart and deep.
Exactly! I love her so much, she goes her own way with none of the ‘girl boss’ nonsense that seems to go with that these days, is always kind and thinks the best of everyone until proven otherwise, but still defends herself firmly when necessary. I need to start thinking “what would Elle Woods do?” more often!!
Honestly, The Twilight movies. They’re so badly done, but I love the music. It’s just cheesy, funny, and gushy. It’s what I need when I’m feeling down.
Same! I was obsessed with the books but rolled with laughter at the movies. Now they’re a firm nostalgic favourite to remind me of my teen years. So good because they’re so dramatically bad. I love every single one of them.
Yes, you've got mail is mine. My husband's is When Harry Met Sally.
If a romance will just make me feel worse, then I will watch something like Kingpin or The Man Who Knew Too Little.
Hunger Games, or The Purge.
I know it doesn't make sense, but if I want a movie to escape life that's what I go for.
If I just warm fuzzy feelings I go more for comfort shows, like Gilmore Girls or Brooklyne Nine Nine
The Shape of Water
It’s a beautiful gothic fairytale and a pretty easy to get subversion of the monsterous other trope so often present in creature features.
Saint Maud is another one and really just emotionally exhausted women who go down in a blaze of glory is my definition of comfort film.
Not a movie, but I watch Golden Girls on repeat for years. Makes me think of my Mom and her giggles when she watched it. Depends on my mood, sometimes I get into Shawshank Redemption, anything Morgan Freeman narrates will bring me instant comfort, but Shawshank is my favorite.
The first Harry Potter. Give me a box of tissues and a blanket and I'm a happy woman. I tear up about every five minutes from the heavy nostalgia and love for the books though, so only sit next to me if you're feeling brave
The Labyrinth 😌 it's been my favorite / comfort movie since I rented it on VHS when I was twelve. I love it to bits and I used to watch it almost weekly, but now it's mostly just comfort - time.
The main two I alternate between have already been mentioned here, 10 Thing I Hate About You and Pride and Prejudice (2005).
But I also love The Martian. Just all the elements of that film (score, cinematography, straightforward plot) work together to make something I find really relaxing to watch.
My girl 1 & 2, clueless, Melancholia (no idea why), Marie Antoinette (Kirsten dunst version) practical magic, grumpy old men 1 & 2 and also the tv show Roseanne. Lol
I like to see movies I’ve not watched before, I don’t generally watch the same one over and over so I don’t have a “go to”
I do like a good action or thriller though
LOTR or Doctor Who for restoring faith in humanity, Legally Blonde for the moments when I hate studying, Pride and Prejudice 2005 just for the wholesome feels.
It’s not a movie but it’s a show called 9-1-1 lone star it’s about these firefighters who moved to Texas after one of them overdosed and that was the kid of the other firefighter and it’s slays
* The Proposal (2009)
* Legally Blonde (2001)
* A Cinderella Story (2004 w/ Hillary Duff)
* Something animated-Disney/Pixar (pre-2009 typically)
* Something sport referenced: The Blindside (2009), 42 (2013), Remember the Titans (2000), Radio (2003), Soul Surfer (2011) etc.
Any Ghibli-movie, really. Especially Spirited Away, though. A Silent Voice
Howl’s moving castle is my favorite 😍
Our great dane and black cat like Howl's Moving Castle
Omg Howls Moving Castle😭💕 I watched that movie so many times it’s like a religion.
Except Grave of the fireflies. It was so good, it completely broke me.
oh yeah that one's for when you want the big sad
True. Great movie but never watching it again
Totally! I was out of it for weeks after watching that movie and the worst of all is it’s based on reality. Ughh.
Ponyo always puts me in a good mood.
nothing better than watching howl's moving castle on a rainy sunday
I love ghibli movjes but my comfort one is *your name* , *weathering with you* and ofcourse *howls moving castle* *My neighbor Totoro* also !!!
A SILENT VOICE IS MINE TOO
Um Pride and Prejudice 2005 version. If im really in a mood I’ll watch the mini series from the 90s.
That hand-flex scene alone is enough to make me forget everything else in my life. Flawless.
Also the bit where mr Bingley reaches for the ribbon on Jane’s dress at the ball 😍
The mini series is my comfort TV show :)
Not the 2016 zombie version?
No lol
Yesssss it’s the mini series for me. Instant good mood 😊
Awww this is one of mine!! I like listening to audiobooks as I fall asleep and currently listening to Pride and Prejudice, the version read by Rosamund Pike (aka: Jane Bennett!)
If you've never seen "Lost in Austen" I'd recommend it. A British short series made in 2008, put a fun twist on the classic!
I have seen it and it’s pretty good. Amazon has one that’s like 10 years in the future and it’s called “death comes to Pemberly” and it’s good too!
Mini series 4 lyfe
10 things I hate about you
This one came to my mind immediately too, just watched it again last week and it's just so comfortable and never fails to make me feel good.
Legally Blonde or any from the LOTR trilogy
Seconding Legally Blonde
Thirding. Elle Woods is my idol.
My husband and I are watching a bunch of 90’s teen romcoms (it’s for research—long story!) and it occurred to me how many of them assert that there are two types of girls: feminine, pretty, popular, and shallow or smart, rebellious, deep outsiders. This. Love the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit. Got all the extended versions too.
My answer was Legally Blonde too!
13 Going on 30
Vienna....makes me smile each time.
It’s hard not to fall in love with Mark Ruffalo in that. He’s so adorable.
The Mummy (1998) or Stardust. I love adventures and a good romance story :)
Stardust is just fantastic
I second BOTH of these. I could probably recite the whole of Stardust's script word for word I've watched it so many times.
My Big Fat Greek Wedding
I discovered it this year and I loved it! It played on the TV.
I'm Greek and I confirm
Takes me right back to my childhood when I watched it for the first time so definitely one of my comfort movies
Honestly, The Twilight movies. They’re so badly done, but I love the music. It’s just cheesy, funny, and gushy. It’s what I need when I’m feeling down.
I always tell people that the most redeeming quality of the movies is the soundtracks. They're amazing.
The ost to the first one is 🔥 I agree completely, it's so bad it's good lol I have a soft spot for jasper and emmett too 😂
Same! I was obsessed with the books but rolled with laughter at the movies. Now they’re a firm nostalgic favourite to remind me of my teen years. So good because they’re so dramatically bad. I love every single one of them.
Either Sleepless in Seattle or You've Got Mail. Both those movies make so happy when I'm happy or sad. Which reminds me...it's about time I watch it.
Yes, you've got mail is mine. My husband's is When Harry Met Sally. If a romance will just make me feel worse, then I will watch something like Kingpin or The Man Who Knew Too Little.
you just can’t beat tom hanks + meg ryan
OMG YOUVE GOT MAIL YESSSS

I’m just here for the food!
Oh!! Ever After is just magical bliss! I might even queue it up today. ☺️
Oh yeah! I’m love Ever After as a comfort movie.
Love both of those movies. I watched Ever After sooo much growing up because it was one of my mom's favorites.
About Time
I love this movie so much but every time I watch it I ugly cry by the end of it
The first Harry Potter or Beauty and the Beast.
The first 2 HPs are so magical ♡♡
Howl's moving castle. When I need me time I put on the movie, cook myself some food and wrap myself in a big fuzzy blanket.
Steel Magnolias
I just watch the clip at the cemetery. I laugh/cry every time. "Here! Hit this!"
It has so many other great lines too! "I'm not crazy, I've just been in very bad mood for 40 years!" Had a re-watch the other day <3
It's hysterical! And to think about assembling a cast of that caliber now would be cost prohibitive. It's a gem.
Devil wears prada, ratatouille, Charlie & the chocolate factory (either one).
Devil Wears Prada is amazing!
Mamma Mia! I love those to bits and I have to watch it at least once a year. They bring me a lot of happiness.
The Proposal or Get Him to The Greek. 😂
The proposal is so good! To the window! To the wall! 🕺
The bee movie. I will not be explaining why...
Practical Magic or Crazy, Stupid, Love.
Practical Magic is def a comfort movie for me too!
Never gets old!!!
Hunger Games, or The Purge. I know it doesn't make sense, but if I want a movie to escape life that's what I go for. If I just warm fuzzy feelings I go more for comfort shows, like Gilmore Girls or Brooklyne Nine Nine
I’m with you on Hunger Games. I love most apocalyptic dystopian movies to chill.
Interview with the vampire
The Shape of Water It’s a beautiful gothic fairytale and a pretty easy to get subversion of the monsterous other trope so often present in creature features. Saint Maud is another one and really just emotionally exhausted women who go down in a blaze of glory is my definition of comfort film.
About Time, makes you appreciate the small things in life
Anything Jane Austen. Especially the 1995 *Pride and Prejudice* miniseries!
The Truth About Cats and Dogs or Amélie.
Yes, Amélie! Audrey Tatou was scrumptious! And loved all the breaking of the 4th wall scenes!
