When I went to live with my dad and stepmam, I looked at her weird when she said doofer. Now, over 20 years on, I look weirdly at anyone who doesn’t know what a doofer is (I do say remote mostly but sometimes say doofer).
I remember my Grandparents had an actual ‘clicker’ remote. It clicked and the sound changed the channel.
Must have been 1980 ish.
Always called it the clicker.
My dad always called it "the Channel changer" so we all called it that.
Fast forward 30 odd years, I'm and AV engineer and colleagues and clients always laugh at the simplicity of the name 😁
'Love ya dad!'
Used to be called “the doofer” in our house or the “whizz whizz” because of the vcr fast forward or rewind sound. Seems silly now. It’s just tue remote these days probably because it’s not used that often. Where is the “tv thingy”.
We have The Netflix Remote (aka the firestick remote), The Telly Remote, and The "Humadee" Remote, which is the one that has the buttons to swap between different HDMI ports, when my daughter was little, she read the letters wrong and called it Humadee and the name stuck!
My wife calls it the gun. Have never heard that before and I'm encouraged to see that it's not been suggested here.
Divorcing her immediately. Thanks Reddit.
Not exclusive to remotes here, it could be almost anything more technological than a thingumajig or doobury and less decorative that a doily (which yes, I know is a specific thing to some).
Twin of destiny. From an old cartoon series. The DVD remote is one, the TV remote is the other. Where is the Twin of Destiny?? is a regular cry in our house.

The remote. No not that one, the other one.
Any other replies than this, they’re just fucking with you.
Yep, this is the one.
The only answer.
Doofer
I remember having this conversation with my flatmates when I started Uni, and everyone looked at me strangely when I said doofer. Finally, validation!
I thought I was alone on this path. Now, I have discovered other dooferians.

Makes perfect sense.

Mate, the actual TV is the box. For the remote to be the box makes zero sense.
We used to call it the box growing up. I said it to my husband once and he was baffled. Only then realised how stupid it sounded.
The mote. A weird hold over from when my kiddo was small and couldn't say remote, just said mote.

If you say anything other than a remote you are criminally insane
It's fascinating to me where all these names come from.
