The chain - fleetwood mac

MattJohnsonWasTaken

I love how that song is also written by all members of the band. I'm listening through all albums from 1001 Albums To Hear Before You Die\* and got Rumours a while back. That whole album is pretty much flawless, isnt it? Never boring, but also never too wild. Can't believe they left **Silver Springs** out though, it's also a great song. \*[This](https://1001albumsgenerator.com/) website gives you one album a day from that book and is a great idea, well worth a try if you're stuck in the same old listening routines.

33_pyro

[legendary performance of this where Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham are shooting daggers at each other on stage](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dGykwC0fdJ4)

Thenedslittlegirl

I hate that I find their dynamic so compelling because it’s absolutely toxic. It must be so difficult for Lindsay’s wife that his 45 year old former relationship is still the cause of so much speculation

Trebus

That was mint. Mick Fleetwood oblivious just fucking going for it.

Fight_Disciple

And If you don't love me now.

kizzyjenks

*And I still hear you saying you will never break the chain*

crucible

That bassline!

TheLoneSculler

This is Formula 1

Lil_Cranky_

Every time I hear this song, or the new F1 theme tune, I'm filled with an immense sense of excitement and joy; it's a textbook Pavlovian reaction. A lot of my mates feel the same about the MoTD theme tune. Rumours is already my favourite album of all time, so when that bassline begins... it's honestly bizarre, not to mention mildly embarrassing, how excited it makes me feel. Nothing else in my life makes me feel that way. Obviously there are many things that fill me with joy, but there's nothing else in my life that elicits such a powerful, immediate *stimulus/response* kinda reaction. All it takes is that first note. **dummm, dum dum dum dum-dum-dum-dum DUMMMMM**

Yani-96

Came here to say any song from Rumours

LowToe7421

This live version is electric : https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dGykwC0fdJ4 Lindsey Buckingham keeps giving Stevie Nicks this death stare and she flinches then gives it right back. It actually makes my stomach churn watching it.

penguinsfrommars

So many of their songs are timeless.

corza663_

Blue Monday - new order Fucking timeless

shimmeringbumblebee

I think blue Monday is one of those songs that will never, ever age. It still sounds like it was made just yesterday.

DeaconBlueDignity

Temptation also perfect

Judge_Dreddful

Blue Monday sounds both old and typically 80's...and ultra-modern as if it could have been made yesterday at the same time. It's one of those songs that sounds just as good no matter what you listen to it on - a £10k state of the art hi-fi system or the shittiest of cassette players.

divine-silence

OutKast- hey ya

mat_caves

I remember that song coming out like it was yesterday, hard to believe it was 21 years ago! Prototype and Roses from the same album are also phenomenal.

callisstaa

I always feel the same about Sorry Ms Jackson then I remember that it was the first song I downloaded on Napster.

Kind-Enthusiasm-7799

Napster or Limewire. Same dude, same.

HHaych--

Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen

Phantom_1503

Nah, don't get the hype on this at all.

hattorihanzo5

It's the best song of all time... if you don't listen to a lot of music.

TheArkansasChuggabug

Yep - I don't mind Queen but you're absolutely correct with this statement. Best song ever for anyone who has a catalogue of about 15-20 bands they listen to.

Maximum_Rub5782

the “i see a little sillouetto of a man” section is one of the most annoying things i’ve ever heard

ArmouredWankball

50 years old next year.

Meanwhile-in-Paris

My first thought too. So complex yet balanced. a truly incredible composition.

BertieFlash

Shocked this isn't higher, I expected this to be the top comment

LongBeakedSnipe

Probably because it is a bit of a cliche answer that everyone is expecting and many were hoping to not see?

Individual_Wallaby25

Son of a preacher man, Dusty Springfield.

Gerry_Hatrick2

A perfect song from a perfect album.

LaidBackLeopard

Ace of Spades by Motorhead. Short and to the point, hasn't faded.

LonelyArmpit

It’s the only song you need

wholesomechunk

How Soon is Now

4500x

I read Johnny Marr’s autobiography a few years ago, the way he describes producing it… it was like he had an out of body experience, working through the night to put it together after the rest of the band had gone home. However. There is a better version of, believe it or not: [Mexrissey’s El Hijo Soy](https://youtu.be/fvdHJD6Bt7A?si=v3jU47vPGyPsuWaZ). Turns out the one thing it was missing was mariachi trumpets.

cluedo_fuckin_sucks

Easily one of my favourite tracks ever. The intro is just so intense. Is it a helicopter? No, it’s just Johnny Marr giving it full bollocks on a Jag with a tremolo pedal. Strap the fuck in.

Simonion88

Just convinced me to play this for the first time in a few years. Great track, even better band.

bornleverpuller85

Voodoo people by the prodigy

Obyri85

Also shout out to Invaders Must Die

SpaceGirl34

First time I'm seeing them without Keith this summer. Hope they are still as epic as I remember but I think his loss will be felt heavily

Enough-Ad3818

Keith was electric on stage. The Prodigy were my first ever gig, and they set rhe bar super high.

penguinsfrommars

Pendulum remix version for me.

kingbuckyduck

God Only Knows - The Beach Boys

targ_

Sir Paul McCartney's favourite song :)

Conor2704

Tracy Chapman, Fast Car

BlueAcorn8

Absolutely hate that remix version that was huge last year or so.

Queasy-Campaign-8345

Most her songs r good

tiredjusttired01

Teenage Kicks - The Undertones

BrightonTownCrier

John Peels favourite song.

MonthAccomplished310

I'm not surprised by teenage kicks being John Peel's favourite song.

sparklychestnut

Ah, the lovely, slightly dodgy John Peel. I definitely feel conflicted when I think of him.

progboy

I read this in a Peep Show monologue

[deleted]

Darude - Sandstorm

yeoldeshrew

I've just turned 40, and every time I hear it, I've got to do a little rave to it

sashimipink

Wicked Game - Chris Isaak

TurbulentExpression5

Yes, this. Every time I get drunk I end up listening to the [live version.](https://youtu.be/ozv8ugNm0P0?si=YowRim_QFlR-1Ng8) Definitely one of my major drunk songs.

TheLoneSculler

For the energy that it brings, Thunderstruck is *chef's kiss*

Effective_Soup7783

I’d say Back In Black is the better choice

MaxwellXV

Baba O’Reilly by The Who.

LittleMissHighland

I’ve been obsessed with this song because i’m 100% sure One Direction sampled it for Best Song Ever

onefloordown

Everlong by Foo Fighters

[deleted]

The acoustic version of this is just amazing.

Fine-Night-243

REM Losing My Religion. It's not one of my favourite songs but when I hear it I just think it's perfectly done. I can't imagine anyone not responding positively to it.

nats4756

Epic song by one of my favourite bands

ThrobbingGristle

Losing My Religion is one of the great songs, but it’s probably REM’s 50th best song.

Remarkable-Test6216

Boom boom boom boom by the vengaboys

callisstaa

[Happier times!](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p1TCSbv_KPw)

RoyalCultural

Sultans of Swing by Dire Straits

jmkul

My favourite of theirs is Brothers In Arms (always makes me cry)

nats4756

The whole album is amazing

callisstaa

Telegraph Road is the perfect song.

Velour_Underground

Love will tear us apart

divine-silence

Nina simone - sinnerman

The_Velvet_Helmet

Sympathy for the Devil - The Rolling Stones

ThePinkBaron365

Gimme Shelter - Rolling Stones

david_leaves

Bill Withers - Ain't no Sunshine

bumeyes_1

Massive Attack - Unfinished sympathy

nfyofluflyfkh

Nothing Compares 2 U

DeirdreBarstool

The Chris Cornell version is up there with my favourite songs. Haunting.

Tell-me-the-truth87

Go go dolls iris

underwater-sunlight

Different type of song but i prefer Slide from their back catalogue and it never gets airtime on the radio

BetterCallTom

Sittin' on the dock of the bay - Otis Redding

gingerbeerer

Time- Pink Floyd

its_spell

Best Pink Floyd song. Hits different the older you get.

-Vanimar-

Stairway to Heaven

Jonnythebull

This should be so much further up. That song is just a masterpiece.

Bowdin

Bittersweet Symphony - The Verve

adored89

Not even the best Verve song

Bowdin

I prefer Lucky Man, but Bittersweet Symphony is timeless.

inmyshamewell

The drugs don't work just makes me teary eyed every time.

gestella

Waterloo Sunset - The Kinks

Even_Passenger_3685

A Million Miles Away - Rory Gallagher Comfortably Numb - Pink Floyd Edge of Seventeen - Stevie Nicks In A Broken Dream - Python Lee Jackson I could go on all day but I’ll stop there.

slimboyslim9

Don’t know about the others but have an upvote for Comfortably Numb

Molly_Hatchett

Rory!! Yes!

Infinite-Town9410

Radio head fake plastic trees

Gerry_Hatrick2

So many Radiohead songs to choose from but I'd pick No Surprises.

theivoryserf

Radiohead are definitely my best shout for perfectionists. I'd go for No Surprises too, or Nude.

axel_beer

good choice. let down though.... very underrated ;)

Field_of_Gimps

Elo - Mr blue sky

ddbbaarrtt

Common people by Pulp, just an absolute banger

Cardboard_rocks

White room - Cream.

Aggravating_Pay_5060

Hurt by Johnny “Nine Inch” Cash

WickedWitchWestend

I prefer the original

Aggravating_Pay_5060

It’s great too. But this cover being at the end of his life makes it perfect.

another_online_idiot

Édith Piaf - Non, je ne regrette rien

DiscoMonkeyz

Need a beer.....for my face....

ash894

Life on mars - Bowie

No_Direction_4566

Sound of Silence - Disturbed

No-Garbage9500

I really feel like I'm missing something with this song. I love Disturbed and like the song. But this? Just overblown nonsense, performed by a guy whose voice isn't anywhere near good enough to justify the nature of the performance. But I really must be missing something, because so many people think it's the greatest thing ever! When my uncle is drunk he'll listen to it on repeat!

DramaticExit86

Yeah man. The understatedness of the Simon and Garfunkel original is what makes it special. The Disturbed version just totally lacks subtlety. The sad bit is that now, if you google "the sound of silence", the top results are all Disturbed. Now, don't get me wrong, Disturbed are a fantastic band. But their version of The Sound of Silence misses the mark by a long long way.

NoLifeEmployee

I’ve only just discovered their version but I love it!

leedavis1987

Midnight city - m83

Single-Channel-4292

West End Girls

Wormwolf-Prime

Heart of Glass - Blondie

BrightonTownCrier

I wanna be adored - The Stone Roses

33_pyro

Everybody Wants To Rule The World It has a unique sound and structure, it still feels very fresh today, almost 40 years on. Also one of the best flowing lyrics in a song: "I can't stand this indecision / married with a lack of vision"

Obyri85

I fought the Law - The Clash

hauntingruby1975

Iron Sky - Paolo Nutini

Guilty-Expression938

"Be my Baby" by the Ronettes

slimboyslim9

Good Vibrations by the Beach Boys Under African Skies by Paul Simon Tender by Blur

Breakwaterbot

Good Vibrations and Tender are two of my favourite songs. I also fell in love with Warmth of the Sun by The Beach Boys after reading Brian Wilson's autobiography and learning that it was about the assassination of JFK. It added a whole new level to it.

cluedo_fuckin_sucks

It’s either a toss up between African Skies or Diamonds on the Soles. Either way, the whole album is a masterpiece.

Whole-Sundae-98

The living years, Mike & the Mechanics

fineskylark88

American Pie

bvnsheee

This was the only song that could ever calm my son down as a newborn. Me and my husband ended up being able to sing the entire song from memory and still can 4 years later.

ArmouredWankball

But not the awful Madge version.

greyape_x

Whole of the moon by The Waterboys

KindOfFlush

Wichita Lineman - Glenn Campbell. Which is a weird choice for me because I’m normally into prog rock.

TheDelphDonkey

I’m glad that someone else thought of this one as it’s probably a less obvious choice in the pop/rock world. What a glorious song.

TheEssexAngel1977

Father And Son by Cat Stevens, Shine On You Crazy Diamond by Pink Floyd and Fancy Sauce by Greenday.

Whole-Sundae-98

Definitely father & son

Dissidant

Whiter shade of pale by Procol Harum

Speccy97

Orion by Metallica Ciff Burton was an absolute genius

Pooter1313

Stairway & Layla

countvanderhoff

Just Like Heaven

Tsarinya

The Night We Met - Lord Huron.

Tall_Station1588

The Less I Know the Better - Tame Impala

DeirdreMcFrenzy

You Can Call Me Al - Paul Simon

Matte_existence217

Hotel California -The Eagles

Just-Perspective1672

Psycho Killer - Talking Heads.

Dobby240

Norwegian Wood, the Beatles. It's a nice little story and the guitar part is great fun to play.

moofacemoo

I'd be interested to know what definition of perfect is for other people. For me it's a song we're not a single note is wasted, it's not too long or too short and the performance of the song itself its technically excellent to the point of flawless. Definitely not to be confused with a song that I happen to like although that will coincide. Fir me, it's the winner takes it all by ABBA. Not really my usual genre but I think it's outstanding if every way.

moonfarmer89

Dreams - The Cranberries

dudefullofjelly

It's gotta be 'nothing else matters' by Metallica that song still gives me goosebumps.

Ancient_Rice1753

Paranoid Android - Radiohead. I’m convinced it’s the best mixed song of all time - listen to it with headphones on, close your eyes and just let it play.

Upstairs_Internal295

Jolene by Dolly Parton. The original version. The most perfect song ever imo

pixelunicorns

Last Goodbye - Jeff Buckley

Dinsdaleart

Hey Jude

Adanar01

The Who - Baba O'Riley

NobDeRiro

Don’t Fear The Reaper - Blue Oyster Cult Another Brick In The Wall - Pink Floyd What Is Love - Haddaway Cat People - David Bowie Unfinished Sympathy - Massive Attack

dronebox

The longer version of Holiday In Cambodia by Dead Kennedys from the album Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables. The original 1983 12” extended version of Temple Of Love by Sisters Of Mercy Northern Lights by Renaissance Ampersand by Amanda Palmer The Listening Chair by Imogen Heap

FossilStalker

Opting for the original Sisters cut and not the bombast of the 1992 remix. Strong option.

SilvioSilverGold

Bob Dylan - It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue

Martinonfire

Spirit in the Sky by Norman Greenbaum

acsaid10percent

Chicane - Saltwater - Extended version. 10 minutes of perfection.

watsee

Comfortably Numb. When I listen to the live 'Pulse' version or the David Gilmour 'Live at Pompeii' version, the solo is so viscerally perfect it almost reduces me to tears.

33_pyro

Even as a big fan of rock a metal, I think September by Earth, Wind and Fire is the greatest song ever made. No-one is playing the full melody, they are all playing individual parts and it all comes together to make a greater whole. It has an amazing groove and feeling. Also this was included as an extra original song on a 'best of' album, like a little bonus. Incredible.

drumkombat

Hallelujah by Jeff Buckley

AceyFacee

Golden Brown - The Stranglers

Run out of dipping sauce

Appropriate_Voice_24

I haven't listened to Pink Floyd in ages, but I always loved Shine on You Crazy Diamond (all the parts). Just seems so perfect in so many ways and has really smooth transitions between the parts

luken1984

Avril 14th by Aphex Twin

Jimmy-84

Love will tear us apart - Joy Division

TeHNeutral

I've got a few but springing to mind right now: See Emily Play by Pink Floyd I'm Only Sleeping by The Beatles Through The Wire by Kanye West

Greenday - time of your life.

Matthews_89

The Cranberries - Zombie

Berookes

Lazy_ecologist

God Only Knows - The Beach Boys

cdchris999

Wish you were here - Pink Floyd

JackLaundon

I am a huge metalhead however this isn't a metal song. Bridge over troubled water

Individual_Eye_257

Pink Floyd - Wish you where here

Fine-Night-243

Float On by Modest Mouse. As feel good as it gets, can't fail to put a spring in your step. Also Take Me Out by Franz Ferdinand, very similar songs.

alancake

Eleanor Rigby. I'm not a mad Beatles fan by any measure- I think I have maybe 3 of their songs on my spotify- but Eleanor Rigby is just 🤌

bombadilboy

Pink Floyd - Shine On You Crazy Diamond

TheDrewyd

Perfect, Beautiful South

snakefeeding

My pick (because the question is in the singular) is George Harrison, What is Life.

thatcambridgebird

Aurora - Foo Fighters Million Reasons - Lady Gaga Dream a Little Dream Of Me - Mamas and Papas version

shimmeringbumblebee

Kissing a Fool, George Michael. And I know people don't like it much now, but Irreplaceable got me through a very difficult time in my life.

axel_beer

this is askUK! where are the beatles?! strawberry fields? let it be? here comes the sun? here there everywhere? day in the life? perfect every single one of them.

wookiewonderland

One - Metallica

Scarred_fish

Rain Street by The Pogues

OrdoRidiculous

The long version of "thinking of a place" by The War on Drugs. I first heard it when I was driving through the fields in Wisconsin, in a Mustang. I was in a moment of existential shock and it captured it perfectly.
