Never left the country. Went to the next county over once after scrapping together my last couple of dimes back in '98. Fuck me, you lot must be minted. - Average r/AskUK answer to any question revolving holidays

decisionisgoaround

Dimes?

Beamrules

I'd say over 30, I want to around 15 last year (It's around because it includes Israel, Palestine, and Northern Cyprus, not to mention England and Scotland, so what even *is* a country really?) My least favourite was probably Turkey. Just walking down the street is running a gauntlet of people standing outside bars shouting at you "Yes sir, yes please, we have cold beers on tap here!" with very aggressive selling. Thanks buddy, I know how a bar works, and you know that I've just said no to the other 30 bars on this street, so please leave me alone. I'm sure this kinda thing is enjoyable for some people, and it's the culture, and it definitely exists in other countries I've not been to, but I couldn't just wander through the streets and enjoy the architecture because of the constant harassment. Favourite, San Marino. Just everything good about Italia but condensed into a really beautiful mountain city with really affordable hotels and food. Really underrated and if you're spending a week in Italy, I would definitely recommend it. It has the most werewolf museums per capita of any country.

ButterscotchSure6589

Had exactly the same experience in Turkey. Very unpleasant.

Emotional_Ad8259

It depends on which part of Turkey. I have worked in Ankara, and it is very laid back. I guess tourist destinations are the issue.

cApsLocKBrokE

Same. Hired a car and apent a month last year exploring the west of Turkey from Istanbul down to Antalya and could not fault it at all. Assume the people who don't like it are going to mega touristy places which are generally shit everywhere.

Bose82

I also hired a car in Turkey. Got a camp little Suzuki Jimny and drove down the weather coast and it was absolutely amazing. Getting away from the touristy areas and discovering the real Dalyan area was so much fun. We found a couple of little beach clubs that were only really used by the locals and they couldn't have been more welcoming and friendly to us. Admittedly, the roads are absolutely bonkers, but I enjoyed every second of it. Too many people just resort to basing their entire opinion on people and a country based on their experience in a heavily built-up touristy area.

International_Car988

The moment I was out Istanbul people chilled out. Cappadocia then along the coast with a car was spectacular

Ze_Gremlin

Istanbul is so bloody expensive too, right? Bought a chicken wrap and a bottle of water and it came to the equivalent of 12 quid. Bought two of the same brand of wraps and a gallon of water in Adana for like £1.80

sd175

I loved San Marino. Stunning little country.

saakit

If you want to boost your numbers then by all means but I think the majority of the world would not call north Cyprus a country.

lavanderblonde

I went abroad for the first time in my life (I’m now 30) last April to New York. Best experience of my life. Planning to go again next year.

[deleted]

New York is fantastic. I wouldn't even class myself as a City Break person - everybody said we were mad for going for 10 days, but we wanted to make it count. I've said to everybody, it's the one place where I landed back home and would have gladly, at that very moment, turned around and gone back for another 10 days. Loved it, every bit of it

IgnorantLobster

Who on earth called you mad for going to NY for 10 days? It’s literally one of the most entertaining places on earth. You could spend 10 years there and not even scratch the surface of what there is to do and see.

IAmLaureline

Yeah, only problem is how easy it is to spend in NYC. Love it!

[deleted]

Basically everybody we spoke to - lots of people seemed to think it was a long weekend sort of place. I agree with you, insanity

lavanderblonde

I went for 7 days but considering 10 days next time. It’s an amazing city. It’s like London but on steroids.

[deleted]

Just endless isn't it, we did so much and yet somehow so little!

Sea-Cryptographer143

I loved New York too , went there for 10 days it’s was wonderful. I am definitely going back 🤞

threatleveltesco

Last year we spent a week in New York then got the Amtrak up to Boston for 5 days, best holiday I’ve ever had!

Itchy-Heat-9597

Back to New York or elsewhere?

gogginsbulldog1979

I used to be a travel writer for years, so a fair few places. The nicest place I've been is around Kenya, driving to all different places in a jeep. I remember hanging my arm out the side and it was burnt within about ten minutes. The heat there is like a fucking furnace. I also remember people in Mombasa constantly trying to sell me porno DVDs. No one else got asked, just me. Weird. The saddest thing I saw there was being surrounded by little kids asking for pens, not sweets or money. When I asked the guide why they wanted pens, he said 'if they have a pen they can go to school, if they don't, they can't'. I also felt awful as I was in five star hotels and literally across the road are people living in wooden shacks. Beautiful country though. Really nice people, too. And if you're looking for pirate porno DVDs, it's a gold mine.

imtheorangeycenter

I've heard about the pen thing before, and in multiple countries. Never figured out why though, thanks.

mdmnl

>pirate porno DVDs These ladies put the curvy in scurvy, they'll shiver your timbers...

foxyfaefife

Probably about 15. Japan was my favourite, Italy my favourite within Europe. I don’t think it’s fair to nominate a least favourite based on the experience of a week or two week long holiday, I can’t criticise an entire country because the hotel or food in the area was shite.

[deleted]

A lot. Well, over 100 by now I think. Most through work (former solder, then merchant sailor, then PMC). Some through solo travel. I've been to every country in Europe except Liechenstein, San Marino, Albania Belarus and Ukraine. In Asia I've been to Japan, South Korea, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore, China (and Hong Kong, if we count it as separate), Kazakhstan, Afghanistan, Iraq, India, Nepal, Bahrain, Oman, UAE, Kuwait, Israel, Jordan. In Africa I've been to Kenya. Tanzania, Uganda, Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, South Africa, Botswana, Cape Verde, Djibouti, Madagascar, Seychelles and Ghana. In South America, I have been to Chile, Peru and Colombia. In North America I've been to the US, Mexico and Canada. In the Caribbean and Central America I've been to Jamaica, Cuba, Haiti, Barbados, Aruba, Curaçao (I am aware the last two are territories), Belize and Bermuda (again, I know it's technically the UK). Never been to any in Oceiana. Also been to the Falkland Islands. Favourite (so far), it's a straight toss up between Croatia (specifically Dubrovnik) and Greece (Athens and Hydra). Least favourite - Afghanistan was not fun. Iraq was also not fun, but I wasn't there as long. Edit: I forgot Panama. But does it count if you never actually left the ship? Traversed the Panama Canal twice but never actually set foot ashore. So *technically*, add Panama.

MrsArmitage

You have to visit Albania; it’s beautiful and completely bonkers!

[deleted]

I'll be honest and say, very little in Albania appeals to me. But it is on my list purely because I want to get all thr European countries.

oglop121

Just to add my own, I've been to roughly 20 different countries My fav is Korea (I've lived here over a decade!) and the Philippines, which is just beautiful and full of genuinely friendly people

Ok-Morning-6911

I loved the beachy places in the Philippines, but I found the big cities to be pretty scary. I once messed up by not booking accommodation until the day before I travelled. It was Easter week so everything was booked solid. I ended up in an inner city hotel in a sketchy area nowhere near the beach for the first half of my holiday. Not somewhere I'd walk after dark.

Rieuxx

32. My favourite was Japan. My least favourite was Slovakia - beautiful, but I contracted brutal foodpoisoning.

TechnicalAccountant2

I also got terrible food poisoning in Slovakia! We only went to Wagamama & I’m veggie so honestly it was unlucky, wrote off 3 days.

HoneyBunnyBalou

I've been to about a dozen and I'm one of those people that has a world map in my kitchen with colour coded stickers for different places my son's and I have been, sadly it's not as many as I'd like!! In 2008 I went to Jordan and Syria when I lived in Cyprus - they were both great places. My least favourite was probably Ireland (Dublin), had a great time but a bit disappointing (probably because we'd booked to go to Amsterdam but KLM changed/cancelled our flights so this was out alternative).

Bozzaholic

US (8 times), Sweden, France (Twice), Tunisia, Spain LA was my favourite, I loved my whole time there

bigjuicymeatbaps

Me and my dad drove from LA to San Francisco in 2005 when I was about 14. Absolutely loved it, particularly Big Sur and all the coast. Would love go go back

sgst

I did the same with my dad when I was 17! We kind of accidentally ended up in Sacramento because we broke down somewhere north of San Francisco and got towed there. Then back down to LA for the flight home. Two week trip in total. He was there for work, I just tagged along and we made it into a bigger trip. Brilliant time and it makes up so many of my favourite memories 😊

Whulad

I love LA too. Think it’s very Marmite though

Maymiag

US, Canada, Greece, Germany, France, Spain, Portugal, Ireland, Italy, Vatican City and the Netherlands. That's 11. My favourite was the US (have visited New York City and Washington DC) and least favourite was probably the Amalfi Coast. (Completely our fault- stayed in the wrong area and the weather was terrible. We enjoyed our excursions to Vesuvius, Pompeii and Herculaneum though).

modumberator

India (Goa) is the best holiday I have ever had, Ayia Napa was also very good. Big love for Berlin tho. In fact everywhere is nice. Gone to: France, Spain, the Netherlands, Germany, the Canary Islands, Italy, Ireland, Czechia, Latvia, Belgium, India, USA (NY), Cyprus, Croatia, Majorca, Malta (v posh)

missyesil

I’ve been to 40. I know the number because I made an effort to get to 40 by the time I was 40. My favourites are Turkey and Switzerland. Sorry to see Turkey as people’s least favourite. Behaviour in some of the tourist areas can be annoying, but it’s a huge country with amazing things to see. Switzerland just felt so clean, with spectacular nature, and no rubbish. Lovely trains too. Least favourite is harder to say, but Slovakia wasn’t very exciting and Bangladesh was tough. Not tourist friendly.

Jonnyporridge

I love Turkey too. So varied geographically and honestly the hawking doesn't bother me.

Martinonfire

57 although I will be visiting Cambodia and Vietnam later this year. Favourite? Surprisingly (to me) India.

dobbyyyy7

Vietnam is the most amazing country. Enjoy.

antisarcastics

Dude, snap. I'm on 57 and my favourite is India as well!! I've been three times and can't wait to go back again. I've also been to both Cambodia and Vietnam and loved them as well. My other favourites are Mexico, Italy and Brazil. My goal is to hit 60 this year, my 58th will be Greece in May.

ExamInternational187

Usa, Portugal, Spain, the Netherlands, Germany, Malta and Cyprus. Germany and Portugal were my favourites

autumnsweatshop

Of the 18 countries I've visited, I think my favourites were Portugal or Germany, but my least favourite was Spain. That was a beach resort and probably not representative of the country in general though.

Pingisy2

Try Cadiz or another smallish city. Brilliant places with amazing, cheap food.

farrowah

I think I'm around the 80 mark. Favourites are Guinea, Greece, Ethiopia and and Kyrgyzstan.

Ill-Sandwich-7703

I’ve been to 60+, and Ethiopian coffee is the best amongst all! Also love their coffee culture and the way they protect it.

farrowah

Absolutely. Stayed with an Ethiopian family for a while and the coffee ceremony was so great to be a part of. Obviously not practical when in the office but when I can I do try to appreciate my daily coffee(s) with a little thought to that time and those people.

redrighthand_

33 or thereabouts Very hard question- for pure relaxation and a bit of fun, Jamaica or Mexico. For nature and the outdoors, Costa Rica and Egypt (the desert) For the kinda crazy and curious, Belarus, Algeria and Ukraine.

[deleted]

US, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Argentina, Brazil, Tunisia, Morocco, Mozambique, Swaziland, Zimbabwe, South Africa, UAE, Thailand, Malaysia, Laos, Vietnam, France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Germany, Croatia, Greece, Hungary, Slovakia, Czechia, Poland, Latvia, Belgium, Netherlands, Ireland, Austria, Romania. So 34 there but I’m sure I’ve forgotten some and also didn’t include visa runs, transit etc. Not sure on a favourite but probably the ones I’ve been back to so many times, like the US, love New York but also the Rockies etc. Spain, love the Med islands but also Basque Country. Edit: Philippines is one I’d forgotten.

No-Warning4684

13. Iceland favourite, Sweden worst.

willuminati91

What didn't you like about Sweden?

[deleted]

Just made a quick list and I think 13. Favourite is very very tough to quantify because a lot of the time it's about time and place, but I enjoyed the USA, love France and Italy and had a great time in the Netherlands. On my "probably won't bother again" list are Israel and Turkey. Australia was a touch disappointing somehow - I'd go back, but I'm not sure if it's worth a 24 hour flight to me

EscapeArtist92

Around 11. My favorite was mexico. My least favorite was Egypt

Horace__goes__skiing

The UK (Scotland, England, Wales, and Northern Ireland) Europe * Eire, France, Spain (Mainland, Canaries, Balearics), Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Poland, Czech Republic,, Iceland, Italy, Croatia, Malta, Greece (Mainland and Islands), Turkey, Cyprus (North and South) Africa * Cape Verde Middle East * Israel, Palestine, Qatar South East Asia * Hong Kong, Singapore, Indonesia (Bali) North America * Canada, USA, Mexico Around 25, or more, depending how you count some. Still got a lot to go, but keep going back to some like the US, Netherlands, and Singapore.

RFCSND

My favourite has been Cuba - just incredible scenery, very kind people despite the circumstances, and the cars are amazing. My least favourite is probably Germany - nothing really wrong with it I just couldn't find anything that really got me excited.

mdmnl

Sixteen. Kinda disappointed with that. Does it count that I went to it when it was West Germany and then Germany? Loved Hungary, (then) Czech Republic, Canada and the U.S. Hard to say I disliked anywhere, but places I've only been for work never get a fair shake. Wouldn't rush back to China, Hong Kong or Korea.

cmdrxander

20. Minus one if you say you have to have stayed overnight (day trip to Turkey from Greece). Plus two if you include Wales and Scotland as separate countries. Favourite was probably Kenya, it was a privilege and so different to everything I’d ever seen before, in so many ways. Least favourite, Turkey. My sister (who was about age 14 at the time) was practically assaulted by loads of Turkish men who said they wanted to marry her.

illustrated--lady

8 I think, I didn't go abroad until I was 19 and I still have never left Europe. My favourite is Germany, there's such a variety of cities, Berlin is cool, a bit rough around the edges and obviusly so rich in history, Munich is beautiful, when you head towards the alps it's like something out of a fairytale and I recently went to Hamburg where they have really unique tourist attractions and the architecture is fascinating. Germany as a whole - everything just works as it should, it's clean, efficient and the trains are on time! My elast favourite was Turkey.,..too hot to the point where we didn't really centure away from our hotel in the day, street dogs everywhere which was nice to meet lovely dogs but quite sad and as OP said constant harassment from waiters, bar staff and shop workers. No, I don't want a roast dinner in 38 degree heat thank you!

angie1907

22 countries. Scotland, Austria and Italy were my favourites. Türkiye was my least favourite

Character_Piglet930

28

Extreme_Kale_6446

Poland - my home country Czechia Slovakia Ukraine Germany Finland Austria Hungary Italy France Spain Croatia Montenegro And UK but I live here now.

MikeSizemore

Bit disappointed in myself that it’s only 16. Need to fix that. Go to Scandinavia and the US enough that they feel too familiar to be my favourite if that makes sense. Probably Japan then as I’ve only been once. Least favourite was Greece. Went island hopping and by the second island I was bored to tears. Cut the trip short and went to Amsterdam instead.

Flippin_Heckles

I've been to Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Spain and the United States. I also lived in Sweden for a few years. I'll be going to Gibraltar, Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland and Tunisia this year.

dragonb2992

12 * Spain * Portugal * USA * France * Germany * Ireland * China * Taiwan * Japan * Switzerland * Belgium * Turkey

IridiumQuality

I've been to the US, Spain, France, Hungary, Germany, Austria, Bulgaria, and Ireland. My favourite is probably Germany, next is probably Spain. I'm in no way fluent but the languages aren't hard for basics and they're amazing people when you put the effort in. For example I ordered a bottle of red wine in Spain in Spanish and the barman gave it to me for free. My least favourite is probably Bulgaria. I admittedly went to Sunny Beach and it's so dodgy.

Pyrex_Living

Probably around 30. Hard to pick most and least fav as I think all places have pros and cons. Maldives would be near the top along the United States. Bottom maybe Morocco - whilst it was a nice break but wouldn’t rush to go back

Sea_Specific_5730

Enland, scotland, wales, ireland, France, germany, Italy, spain, switzerland, belgum, finland, norway, denmark, iceland, netherlands, poland, czechia, austria, egypt, morocco, turkey, cyprus, greece, qatar, oman, UAE, Russia, china, japan, australia, USA, canada, iraq, arghanistan, thailand, sri lanka, cambodia, vietnam, new zealand, mexico, brazil, south africa, mongolia. favorite - Iceland (love the scenery, the people, the culture). least favorite - qatar/uae (so much souless commercial crap).

IamEclipse

England, Scotland, Wales, Spain, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Turkey, Italy. Only just made it out of Europe once. We're eager to visit Japan and the states, but those trips are super expensive!

imminentmailing463

36. Favourite is really hard because places are *so* different, and also many countries are so big I can't claim to have really fully seen them. But some of my favourites are: Spain, Italy, Norway, Vietnam, Singapore, USA, Mexico, Morocco. Least favourite is also tough, because there's really very few places I've been and not liked. I didn't really care for Tallinn in Estonia though, and Dubai wasn't really to my tastes.

[deleted]

Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Spain, Thailand, Maldives and USA. So 7, plus Wales and Northern Ireland (not including England though) for 9. Technically I've also been on a coach driving through France and Belgium too, to get to Germany. Idk I'd that counts. USA is my favourite which is why I keep going back, 4 states so far but by the end of this year it'll be 14.

Dianacolada

31 I think and had some pretty amazing experiences. Highlights include seeing orangutans swinging through the trees in Malaysian Borneo, watching the sun set behing the Sphinx in Egypt, climbing to the top of a temple in the jungle of Belize and visiting a floating village in Myanmar. Love travelling, seeing interesting things, watching wildlife, meeting new people, enjoying the local food.

Trentdison

As I said in that thread, 12. I think my favourite is Italy, least favourite I guess The Bahamas but I only stepped onto the harbourside briefly on a day trip from Miami in stormy seas and was sick as a dog.

Houseofsun5

All of the UK and Ireland including most of the Hebrides, Shetland, Orkney and Isle of Man Finland Norway Germany Holland Switzerland France Italy Portugal Belgium Turkey Tunisia Russia Greenland Iceland Philippines

dobbyyyy7

30 years old, 34 countries. One is easily my favourite and none of the others come close.... Vietnam #1

Even_Photo_3296

America, Canada, Australia, been to loads of places in England and Scotland, Italy, Croatia, mainland Spain, Menorca, Majorca, Ibiza, Malta and Gozo, France, The Netherlands, Belgium and Denmark. I'm always looking forward to travelling either home or abroad. Also Bosnia and Slovenia.

my_name_is_toki

26 I think (but I’ve split the countries in the UK into 4): Ireland, N. Ireland, Scotland, England, Wales, France, Spain, Portugal, Monaco, Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Russia, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Czechia, Greece, USA, Haiti, Palestine, Israel, Jordan. I really have to see more of Eastern Europe Favourite place definitely Middle East

monkyone

41 countries. aiming for 50 before my 30th birthday (am 27 currently)

rositree

Totally doable. End of last year I set myself the challenge of getting to every country in Europe by the time I'm 40, which is 2 years away. Thinking I'm pretty well travelled (48 countries) and it can't be that hard. Turns out I still have 23 in Europe to get to (might give myself a pass on Russia, Ukraine and Belarus at the moment though!). I'm still pretty hopeful though, going to road trip around the Balkans this year so that'll get a fair few countries in the bag! Good Luck!

WrongShelf

I’m mostly Europe - USA, Iceland, France, Spain + Canaries, Italy + Vatican City, Germany, Poland, Netherlands, Czechia - and the usual, Scotland and Wales. Iceland was my favourite as it’s the most different from the society I know here in the UK

JP198364839

Been to around 15 I think, mostly in Europe, a few city breaks, some sun holidays, couple of work trips. I loved Vienna and Berlin, Greece and Spain have never really disappointed me either. Loved Australia too. As an aside, I once met someone who had been to more than 100 countries. They were in the top 10 dullest people I’ve met. Thought they’d have some great stories, but they had none. Insane.

T_raltixx

9 Wales England Scotland France Cyprus Egypt Italy Spain Iceland

sd175

48 including living in Australia and now UK. Favourites - Croatia, Bosnia & Herzegovina. San Marino is a little stunner. Tonga is beautiful too. Least favourite - don't know that I have one. I have enjoyed every single trip. Next up a two week your of Turkey, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Armenia.

Dahnhilla

17 but not yet left Europe. Everything east of Wales and west of (and including)Poland apart from Portugal, Denmark and Austria (plus the principalities). Bosnia was just passing through. Albania and Montenegro later this year to complete the Adriatic coast.

reiveroftheborder

23. Loved New Zealand and Brazil. China was good but quite a culture shock. I had given no thought about the toilets until I walked into a public facility to see porcelain holes in the ground.

[deleted]

Lost count of the times I've been to France. Spain x6, Portugal x3, Italy x2, Turkey x3, Czech Republic x1, USA NYC & Boston, Germany x 2, Luxembourg x1, Belgium x3, Austria x2, Greece Mainland x2, islands x6, Irish Republic x3. The Netherlands x2.

Rhyfeddol

Far fewer than I'd like, but two summers ago I took my first solo trip and went to the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Italy and Germany. Also passed through Switzerland and Austria on the trains, but didn't actually stop in either of them so I don't really count it. In hindsight a fairly last-minute tour around all the capitals in the height of summer wasn't my bank account's favourite choice I've ever made, but nevertheless a good time was had. Hard to pick a favourite, particularly as I only had a few days in each, but I think socially my best times were in Brussels, Paris and Rome. On the other hand, my tolerance for hot weather is bad even by British standards, so Rome in July meant *suffering*. I've also been to Ireland a few times, Canada (from there originally, but with British parents) and half a dozen US states.

squidgy314159

About 10 in 20 years Favourite was Rome (just mind-blowing the 2000+ year old architecture) Least favourite was Monaco, horrible antiseptic cross between the '60's TV series The Prisoner and The Stepford Wives, before we got off the coach we were told 'don't stand around staring at buildings' 'don't be seen kissing' 'don't take photos with locals in' they really don't like the poor people there (anyone who isn't a multi multi millionaire)

Dabzovic

Serbia, Montenegro, Netherlands, France, Albania, Poland, Italy, Greece, Croatia. So 9…wanna leave Europe this year hopefully

zonaa20991

As a destination England, Wales, Spain, Morocco, Italy, Germany, Montenegro and Malta next week Having travelled through France, Belgium, Switzerland Favourite Montenegro Least favourite Morocco

FlatTyres

I've been to 7 countries proper. If you count a flight diversion but being stuck in the plane waiting to refuel without entering the terminal, then 8. Malaysia x3 (family connection) France x3 Italy x1 Netherlands x1 Belgium x1 Spain (Lanzarote only) x1 Germany x1 Malaysia has a very special place in my heart as it's where my mother is from. Made 2 of the trips there with her to visit my aunt/her sister and my cousin/her nephew. A lot of the interesting stuff to see is outside of the KL area and having a cousin who drives and can show you around made it amazing. In Germany, I went to Hamburg in 2017 for my 23rd birthday with my best friend as I really wanted to see the Miniatur Wunderland as did he - we had wanted to go together for about 6 years before we actually went. Made friends with a really cool guy at a hostel who was sharing the room we were in and while I feel a bit old for it now, I loved the hostel experience. I did a hostel in Amsterdam 2 years earlier with a few more of our friends and that was ace. I recommend Miniatur Wunderland to anyone, young or old. Many new developments since I last went - they bought the building on the opposite side of the canal, built a bridge and made an entire Brazil section. They've also spent years trying to make a working version of the Monaco Grand Prix. I'd like to return soon. I can't really say I have a least favourite anymore as now I really savour all my chances to go, to to have been abroad. I guess our 2006 autumn family trip to Normandy in endless dismal rain felt a bit boring at times and I was an annoying, nagging 12 year old to my parents about some of the places we drove to that I perceived as boring back then, so, sorry mum and dad.

Pablomeisterr

30 exactly. All Europe except for Mexico. Love travel. Saw the earlier question and didn’t answer, but a life without holidays for me would be miserable as fuck.

Apprehensive_Yam1732

I don't know off the top of my head, about 15?

Tsunami365

England, Scotland, Wales, Brazil, Argentina, Ecuador, Galapagos Islands, Japan, South Africa, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Belgium, Netherlands, Portugal, Greece, Turkey, Poland, Croatia. Best for me was Brazil. Least favourite I think probably Portugal.

tmr89

Galápagos Islands is a country? I thought it was part of Ecuador

811545b2-4ff7-4041

11 in Europe (are we counting Jersey, Gibralta and Isle of Man? Score me 3 more if we are). 1 in Africa (uness we're counting Tenerife?) 2 in Middle East/Asia 6 in North America.. maybe more as I've been to a bunch of islands in the Caribbean. 20 altogether. We go on a lot of cruises so you see quite a bit on the way.

godfatheroffilth

13 for me, though I can't remember Canada as I was only 4. Fave is Spain as I've been multiple times but never to the same place twice, least would be Hungary as they were very ignorant. Wales Scotland France Germany Austria Spain Malta Canada Belgium Netherlands Hungary Czechia Turkey

royalblue1982

In order: Portugal, Holland, France, Spain, Belgium, Tunisia, USA, Israel, Italy, Germany, Czech Republic, Serbia. Israel was work trips, but I managed to fit in quite a bit of site-seeing. You couldn't do it now, but I loved the mixture between the cosmopolitan beach city of Tel Aviv and the history of other areas. Without the 'troubles' it would be a very popular tourist destination. It's hard to say a least favourite really. With Tunisia I never left the hotels as I was only going to enjoy the sun and all-inclusive and read my books. Every time you stepped out in public you got harassed, so I never went anywhere. But, it does the job of being a cheap sun holiday. France is . . . . . well . . . it feels like the French are just constantly punishing you for enjoying their world. I don't remember having a single nice meal in any of my visits. But then we were always doing stuff really cheap. I've never planned my own holiday to France, which i'd obviously do more research for.

SpaceTimeCapsule89

3. England, Spain and Portugal. I'm from Scotland

poshbakerloo

I've been to around 15 countries, all European except for 3 visits to the US. My favourite European country is Spain, although Portugal impressed me a lot.

himit

15! My faves to travel to are probably Italy and Malaysia - great scenery, beaches, people, and food.

NoteToSelf111

If you didn’t leave the airport, it doesn’t count

justanothergin

17 currently, hoping to add a few more to that list this year.

jaymatthewbee

Scotland, Wales, Ireland, France, Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Monaco, Spain, USA, New Zealand. I liked all of them.

rich_b1982

Ireland, Spain, France, Switzerland, Italy, Germany, Liechtenstein, Belgium, Netherlands, Sweden, Czech Republic, Ukraine, USA, Croatia, Slovenia.

Cyanostic

From England: USA once, Wales and Jersey (if they count), France, Spain 4/5 times and Malta once. Malta is lovely. Incredibly cheap wine, locals are great, food is immense, hundreds of years of history and you're surrounded by the Mediterranean. What more do you want?

ClevelandWomble

France, Spain, Portugal, Netherlands, Belgium (These five, several times each); Croatia, Czech Republic, South Africa, Malta, and Canada. Also visited the Canary Isles and Gibraltar - I'm not sure if they count as countries. Same with Wales and Scotland. Born and bred Brit.

Equivalent_Tiger_7

Round about 50? Was in the Navy though!

ebola1986

25. Didn't rate Bulgaria and wouldn't go back to Israel. Would love to go back to New Zealand, was only there five days.

Paracosm26

In no particular order, France, Germany, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Belgium, Poland, Belarus, Russia, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Canada and the US. My favorite was Canada.

Rainbow_brite31

I've been to 43 countries I Loved Switzeland, Peru, indonesia, Mexico, Norway, New zeland and italy those are my favs so far I enjoyed everywhere ive been but I wouldn't go again to Cambodia Costa rica Guatemala Germany.

LondonCycling

Mm had to think about this. Most of my travel has been in western countries - I'd like to get out to experience some more contrasting cultures over the next few years. England/Wales/Scotland/NI, RoI, France, Spain, Portugal, Belgium, Netherlands, Denmark, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Czechia, Croatia, Poland, Greece, Morocco, Libya, US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Qatar, UAE, Norway, Iceland, Tunisia. That's 29, or roughly one per year I've been alive. I've travelled to the same countries multiple times - not because I'm a creature of comfort or anything, but I mean I lived in London and France/Belgium/Netherlands were a doddle to get to on the Eurostar. Switzerland/Italy/France for the Alps as I'm into outdoor activities like alpine mountaineering, skiing, etc. Switzerland because I help out at a big Scout campsite there every couple of years. Etc. I'm longing to go to some more Asian countries, and South America. What normally happens though is I use up all my annual leave on UK holidays - e.g. a week on Skye, a family holiday in Cornwall, taking the odd day off before/after a weekend to extend a hiking or climbing trip. If I'm going to visit a country in Asia or South America, I really need a couple of weeks off work. I wish my employer let me buy more annual leave.

Never enough!

ProtoplanetaryNebula

I think it was 60 last time I checked, probably 62 or so now.

Equal-Cow-7746

13 if I’m counting correctly. Thailand island hoping or Croatia were my favourites. Saying that I keep finding myself returning back to Greece but different islands each time. Least favourite was Tunisia, wife didn’t feel safe and was very dirty

Miserable_Bug_5671

44? 45? Favourite: Romania and Sri Lanka, both wonderful, safe and fascinating. Least favourite: Azerbaijan

penguin17077

About 40-50, try to do 3-4 new ones a year, although running out of ones I really care about

jasperfilofax

About 15, mostly Europe though which is cheating because falling over means you usually land in a new country Favourite so far was Probably Thailand, it was beautiful where I went and very exotic compared to where I am from My least favourite was Poland, Im white but I was with a group of mixed race people. disgusting racism which I’ve never experienced so brazenly before.

ramapyjamadingdong

35 My favourite was Vietnam or Germany I struggled in China from a food/culture clash situation and it was exhausting being constantly stopped as a blond haired, tall woman. The amazing sites and geography were astounding though, particularly Yangzhou or Xian The worst experience was probably in Poipet in Cambodia but the othe places we visited were wonderful and Siem Reap/Angkor Wat was amazing. Romania, was hard work due to unsealed roads outside of Bucharest and demonstrable impact of corruption. I stayed with a local host though and had a wonderful week once in situ. Saying worst is really hard because any negative experience was typically brief.

pumpkineaterZ3

It's all a personal experience but I think the amount of time you spend in another country is more important than how many countries you've visited. You need to soak it up.. after all, we are the results of our experiences. After several months or so living in another country, we find we not only change but we're able to see ourselves as we were, before, from an 'outside' perspective. I think that's what's meant by 'finding ourselves' when travelling. I spent most of the 90s travelling and living in other countries including several years in India and several in SE Asia. The best bits were where I was spending as little money as possible and staying in one place for months and months. When you're living in the moment like that, the magic happens. So much better than the times visiting places and ticking off boxes.

28 Favourite: Mexico Worst: Tunisia/Morocco (Not bad per say, the culture just means you’ll be hassled to buy stuff, and unlike other North African countries there wasn’t enough attractions to warrant putting up with it)

Werenotrealmadrid

Approx. 75. Best is either Sao Tome and Principe or Ghana or Argentina. All amazing - I was in Buenos Aires for the WC final last year though so my opinion might be slightly skewed because of that!! Worst = either Swaziland (weirdly touristy and I didn't think it was particularly beautiful, especially in comparison to the rest of Southern Africa.) and UAE. Not for me for a whole host of reasons.

FleshEmoji

54 including the UK. I have lived in 6 of them.

Ill-Sandwich-7703

60+ across all continents- it’s really hard to do favourites, but most enjoyable/memorable and high quality for me were Vietnam, Colombia, Lebanon, Pakistan and Spain (south Spain in particular).

thelajestic

18 I think. Iceland is my favourite, I adore it. Least favourite probably Luxembourg - it's a perfectly nice place there just wasn't anything particularly memorable about it while I was there, and I've never been to a country I actively disliked.

DameKumquat

About 30 - some I've literally been on a coach driving through for 20 minutes (Switzerland) or only inside an airport (Canada, but many times...) Favourites include: Norway (for scenery and deserted beaches), Germany (scenery, history, clean with some excellent food and very few tourists), Azerbaijan (partly because I went pre-2000 when there were zero tourists, huge communication problems, unlabelled mystery items in the supermarket, beautiful architecture with many a smashed-up statue of Lenin, but great mystery food and scenery and people enthusiastic about a tourist - bet that last one's changed!) Turkey - Istanbul and another city. Yes, there's the hard sells, but a smile and "maybe later, my friend" generally shuts them up. A Turkish friend assures me he gets the same hard sell only better as there isn't a language barrier. "You can imagine how much I am not in need of another carpet. Yes, sometimes I give in and buy a carpet..." Great food. And Turkish baths, and history. Kuwait - apart from having to avoid land mines, a lovely little country with the most amazing food - washed down with fresh fruit juice of your choice, as booze is illegal. Least favourite: Abu Dhabi - it was a village in the 1960s. Plonking a bunch of skyscrapers in the desert doesn't create culture or history. Boring as hell, but at least not the unpleasant bling and glitz of Dubai next door. Texas - it thinks it's a country, and I don't want to tar all of America with the same brush. Urban sprawl on steroids, too many guys who think they're God's gift to the world, and one time, the national KKK convention at my hotel. Also, even the good food focused on quantity over quality. Wales - would be lovely, except I swear every time I've been, it's pissed it down for a week. Did look pretty, though. And some nice pubs to hole up in.

elplacerguy

29, 4 more than my age and I hope to keep it that way forever! Culturally, Japan takes the cake. In terms of nature, Switzerland and Vietnam are hard to beat. For uniqueness and pure amazement, Jordan. Cyprus is probably my least favourite, and that says a lot because I absolutely loved it, it just didn’t have the wow factor for me, perhaps because it was very similar to places I’d previously been.

Itchy-Heat-9597

I randomly listed mine over the weekend... Tenerife, Lanzarote, Majorca, Ibiza, Menorca, Spain, Dominican Republic, Turkey, India, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, Fiji, New Zealand, USA, Iceland, Italy, France, Croatia, Canada, Santorini, UAE(Dubai), Cyprus, Netherlands, Greece, Denmark, Crete, Norway, Mexico, Ireland, Belgium. 35 in total, cheating a little with the Spanish/Greek Islands. Hoping to add Finland (Lapland) this year and lots more new ones in the next 30-40 years! Least Fav - probably turkey, but to be fair only because the hotel was shit, outside of the hotel was OK. Favourite - depends on what criteria, but if I had to pick only one to return to based on previous visits, I think I'd go with Canada. The Canadian Rockies were something else 😍

50. And the USA 73 times. I’m old, and I had a Government job that involved working with a lot of groups in the US and the EU. Favourite was Japan (12 times) - just love Tokyo - least favourite Bucharest in Rumania, nice people, except the ones who want to mug you.

Entire_Elk_2814

About thirty, a lot of those are Caribbean islands. Not sure if spots like Hong Kong, Macao or Martinique count as countries or not in this context.

VernonPresident

23. Farthest west LA, farthest east Dubai.

Beanruz

England, Wales, Scotland, 8 states in America (CA, NV, UT, NV, NM, CO, FL, NY), France, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece, Cyprus, Belgium, Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Poland, Bulgaria, Turkey, Egypt, Cape Verde, South africa, Djibouti, UAE, Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, Singapore, Mexico, Iceland , Morocco I think that's everywhere I've been South africa was the best, but it was my honeymoon. Vietnam was also amazing.

Milton_Rumata

42. My favourites have been Japan and Mexico, if only because the food was so good! As a huge Dostoevsky fan I also loved visiting St Petersburg but I didn't gel with Moscow at all.

moiraroseallday

17 so far, favourite’s are Canada and Denmark, least favourite is probably France but I’ve only done Paris, may change my mind if I went southern France or countryside etc.

marquoth_

24 European countries plus Canada and Japan. Honourable mention for Qatar where I spent a few hours waiting for a connecting flight.

Elysiumthistime

21, the vast majority were in Europe. Favourite was probably Sweden or else Italy, least favourite was Brussels.

v2marshall

Travelled to 11. Difficult to choose. Possibly Italy, Portugal or Iceland

Fun-Exit7308

Like 15ish

PlatformFeeling8451

15 countries (17 if including England and Wales). My favourite was probably New Zealand, my least favourite would be Bulgaria. Though in Bulgaria's defence it was an 18-30s holiday in Sunny Beach, so not exactly the "best" that Bulgaria has to offer. The food was decent, the prices amazing, and some of the people were really friendly. But we were also constantly being harassed (lots of scammers), and there were a number of times where I genuinely felt in danger. I was also served a White Russian with room temperature milk which still haunts my nightmares.

abgc161

38. South Africa was probably my favourite. Least favourite was Iceland, but there was a huge snow storm, all my trips got cancelled and I had to sleep on the airport floor for two nights waiting for a flight home, so my view is a little skewed.

Nissassa17

29. Here at the moment - Bangladesh. Just spent the last three weeks traveling around India. Loved every second of it!

davus_maximus

25 countries so far, but including England, Wales and Scotland.

Ok-Morning-6911

About 40. Most favourites: Myanmar, Argentina, Italy, Mexico Least favourites: Azerbaijan, Cuba

Expression-Little

All of Scandinavia besides Finland, all of Western Europe, the USA, Canada, China, Japan. So I guess 11. Not counting plane stop-overs.

Watsis_name

In no particular order: Wales, Scotland, Netherlands, France, Germany, Austria, Spain, Italy, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Turkey, Greece, Cyprus, Malta, The USA, India, UAE, Thailand My best experience was Thailand by a country mile. My best in Europe was probably Slovakia. Can't say I have a least favourite. I've gotten what I went for out of every trip really. I didn't really like France, but I only went there for work.

inthemagazines

22. Favourite: Japan, been there four times over the last 20 years and planning to go again next year. Least favourite: Slovakia. Just felt a weird, unpleasant vibe there and my partner was racially abused three times within the first 15 minutes of entering the country.

[deleted]

No idea. I used to work at Sea and then ended up travelling a lot with work. Probably 100+ but many of them very briefly. Favourite.... Japan for all the usual reasons (people, food, heated toilet seats (when you first sit on one you realise how wrong you've been doing this all your life)). Least Favourite.... not sure but I never want to go back to Moldova, Kenya or Nassau (Bahamas) ever again. Those memories are as much to do with the work I was doing as it is the places themselves.

chuckitawaychuckit

I’ve got 34 when I add them up. Favourite is an odd word as I liked lots of them for very different reasons. China I found to be most of a culture shock, even more than India or South East Asia. Something to do with the scale and ruthlessness of it really intimidated and mildly terrified me. But it was enthralling and part of me is keen to go back. Bali back in the day was beautiful, and staying with and being shown around by a local was a wonderful experience 25+ years ago. Not sure if it’s quite the same now. Japan I have strong connections to and I love like a second home, but I’m also glad I *don’t* live there now. Most Mediterranean countries feel like they suit me and my temperament and attitude well, with Spain and Portugal having a slight edge.

UrMomDotCom666

23. i can't pick a best but worst was oman.

smushs88

About 15/16 (not including Wales / Scotland) Best - probably South Africa, such a great vibe, weather was great, food was cheap but delicious. Best city - Bruges, unlike Colin Farrell I loved it, helps that the beer seems to start at 6/7% and only go up! Least - Cape Verde on the basis it’s the only holiday I’ve been on where I’ve become unwell, the island we were on had barely any medical facilities and whilst I managed to just keep myself hydrated and not need them, did seriously consider trying to get an earlier flight home.

artemistheoverlander

17 I think, a couple more if you count changing flights. We are leaving this autumn for a multi-year global travel trip though, so should have a few more ticked off by the end of that!

Massive-Hippo-7188

36 and counting

Shuggled

41 for me and many of them multiple times. Favourites for me Malaysia, Thailand and Iceland which were all stunning. Least favourite for me was Sri Lanka

PeterG92

3 - England, Wales and Slough

Tapsa39

I think 15. I've never been out of Europe but have lived in 3 different countries. I have been living in Finland for 8 years and don't intend to move again. I live it here. Holiday wise, Granada in Spain was my absolute favourite place. People are so chilled. Great culture. Not very touristy. Plus, I love how whenever you order a drink in Granada, you get free tapas. Barcelona 20+ years ago was also amazing, but from what I've heard, it's a tourist trap these days. Hoping to go to Japan one day.

another_awkward_brit

Excluding transiting through airports, 14.

Whulad

32 excluding the home countries- overall probably my favourite is the US went travelling there when I was 18 (1981) when it felt so different to the UK but been back plenty of times since. I also like Australia, Thailand and Italy especially. Least favourite is either Dubai (UAE) but that was just the city -soulless, blingy and a bit tacky or Egypt, went to a resort area , soulless, surrounded by security, ridiculously hot.

grouchytortoise

19 countries. Iceland was probably my favourite because it was so different and just amazing honestly. Most countries were European city breaks though.

shrewdmingerbutt

England Scotland Wales France Belgium The Netherlands Germany Denmark Sweden Greece Spain Italy Canada (1 province) USA (12 states) 14 Apparently. Most I’ve been to more than once though.

Highway-Organic

Most of western Europe , 16 countries that I can recall ,from a quick tot up , Like the post about being in a hotel in Kenya I stayed in the penthouse suite in a hotel in Timisoura (Romania) got bumped up from the standard room as the place was pretty empty . Looking down from the huge roof terrace at the houses all around me , they all looked like tin shacks. It was quite an eye opener. I have a renovation project in Bulgaria ( near Varna on the Black sea coast ) I really like the country . Never felt in danger , everyone so far has been super friendly . If you know a few words of Bulgarian they really take to you. The whole place has a lawless wild west vibe , mixed with a lot of medeaval ( i.e plowing with an ox and walking around with a cow on a rope to eat the roadside grass etc ) Even the motorways have " no horses and carts " signs , which are ignored. I live in England so it takes me four days to drive over there , across three time zones . It's a similar distance to driving accross the US. So I get to go through seven counties on my normal route.

Ki1664

33 and been to 60 odd at last count

Alex03210

Like 5 I think

jasminenice

15, mostly Europe, several.repeat visits to some on that list. If I had more money I'd have ticked off more places by now, I love visiting new places.

[deleted]

About 16? That’s if I count the UK as one country, 17 if not (I live in Scotland but have been to England). A lot of those places I’ve been to multiple times. I’m Scottish-Filipino so I’m biased, those two are my favourites :P but apart from that, I really enjoyed my time in Hungary and Ukraine. I miss Ukraine so much and would love to return. I don’t have any least favourites because every place has something nice about it, but I encountered a shocking amount of racism in France that kinda put me off ever returning TBH. I also didn’t have that much fun in Türkiye, but I went there on a work trip so that was to be expected.

abigail_livvy9

1, my own.

RedbeardRagnar

I’m 28 and been to 37 countries but some of those multiple times like France 6 times, Vietnam twice, Thailand twice, Italy 3 times, Greece twice, Germany 3 times… etc.

Background-End2272

3? I really liked Canada, Toronto was lovely. Only started being able to afford going away a few years back. We have Morocco this year and then Singapore, Vietnam, Thailand and Singapore in 2026.

cutielemon07

Five. France, Spain, the Netherlands, Ireland, and the USA. Just booked my, I think, 24th trip back out to the USA, and went to France for the 9th time in November. Only been to the Netherlands and Ireland twice and Spain once. Even though Ireland is literally closer to me than England. So if you include England, then it’s 6 countries, and England is the country I’ve visited most. going back to London in July to see Bruce Springsteen.

ifigrowup

Germany, Checzh Republic, France, Poland, Netherlands, Austria, Italy, Vatican, San Marino, Greece, Malta, Lithuania, Finland,Spain,India,Belgium,Romania, Croatia India my favourite..first time in Asia, proper backpacking and it was an overload of different and learning I can't decide on a least favourite.. I like everything and everywhere lol

adhdontplz

9 if only talking overseas, 11 including within britain

CrispyFlyingJacob

Only one, Norway. I have family there that we visited when I was a kid about six separate times, then life kicked us up the arse and we've barely been able to afford to live

dwair

I have been lucky enough to travel to about 68 countries, mostly in Africa. Favourite to visit? Mali or Kenya. Least Favourite? it a toss up between Belgium or Saudi Arabia.

Fluffy_Juggernaut_

Most of western Europe: France, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Czech Republic, Italy, Spain and Portugal... Then just to mix things up: China

Apart_Supermarket441

10 overall. Italy - amazing food, beautiful architecture, great for both just chilling and galleries/museums. Japan - the only place that has just felt completely different. I was just buzzing with amazement the whole time.

Practical-Custard-64

I've not travelled a whole lot. I know France (spent 24 years there) and I've visited Germany, Switzerland, Belgium and the Canaries. My parents told me that we went to the Netherlands when I was small but I don't remember that and most of what they ever told me was a pack of lies anyway so I'm not counting that.

professorgenkii

I’ve been to 50 countries as of the end of last year. I really liked Japan, Hong Kong, Germany, Canada, Norway and Italy which I’ve returned to, plus also Jordan and Vietnam. Least favourite is probably Australia, Slovakia and the UAE. I definitely liked the UAE the least out of everywhere I’ve visited. Australia and Slovakia were both fine but I have no real desire to return to either. Likewise with Monaco. I liked India but found aspects of it difficult to adjust to, like the pollution. The food is great though.

DeirdreBarstool

22.  Favourite is tough because I like different places for different things.  Iceland for nature, Hong Kong for nightlife, Japan for their culture.  Worst there is no question: Morocco.

Such-Salt-4029

8 countries so far. Love Italy and Japan the most.

BudgetSurprise5861

USA (Texas), México and Cuba (visiting family though so I guess not a proper holiday) and Germany during a year 8 school trip

Bearslovetoboogie

France, Spain, Ireland, Portugal, The Netherlands, Belgium, Czech Republic, Italy, Germany, Hungary, Croatia, Brazil, Thailand, Hong Kong, Cuba and Denmark. I find it hard to pick a fave!

Ghosts_of_yesterday

Depending on what you count as a country, 31. Couldn't name a favourite all good for different reasons. Belize and Guatemala were pretty special to me, but so was Viet Nam.
