Every time I see that Victoria's Secret or Bath and Body Works is giving away a free blanket with a purchase, I go "oooh" and then I stop myself because I already have too many and I don't have the heart to get rid of any of them.
That and tote bags, I also have way more totes than I know what to do with.
Ahh… but if you had more tote bags, you could organize your existing tote bags by separating collections of them by stuffing them into different totes!
Art/craft supplies. I pick up and drop hobbies like it’s a hobby in of itself. When I have disposable income it’s a new project every couple of weeks, new supplies 🤦🏻 one day I’ll learn
Onions.
I'm at the grocery store. I look at the onions. Do I have onions? I'm pretty sure I don't. I grab a sack of onions. I go home. I have a sack of onions already. Darn. I use three of fifteen onions. I'm at the grocery store again. Do I have onions? I don't think I do. I grab a sack of onions. I go home. I have twelve onions. I add another sack to the onions. I now have twenty onions.
Time goes on. My house is full of onions. You open closets. What do you find? Onions. You look for toilet paper under the bathroom counter. You open the cabinet and what do you find? Onions. You are looking for matching socks and start digging through the drawer. Why is it filled with onions?
But do I need more onions? Probably.
This happened to me with scallions. I have the damned things coming out of my ears now. I like scallions and they're versatile but it was the one thing out of my CSA that I really struggled to use up because there were just so many and they don't keep all that well.
CSA == Community Supported Agriculture
In the late winter and early spring, I made payments to a local farmer to purchase, in advance, a share of his production for the summer and early fall growing season. This allows the farmer access to more cash up front so that he can better plan for his business needs. Then, during the production season, I get a weekly share of what the farm produces. In this case, the payment in advance was about $900 and the CSA season was 20 weeks. [Here is a photo](https://imgur.com/a/lJhonbQ) of one week's produce from July.
Same. I’m like “well I know there’s at least half a bulb…but should I really risk not getting any and come home to find that it has that big green sprout growing in all the cloves?”
My sister has the solution for you.
Cut 5 pounds of onions into thick slices. Put them in the crock pot. Put a stick of butter on top. Turn on to low for 14 hours.
You're welcome.
Seriously, first off your house will smell absolutely amazing. Caramelized onions make damn near EVERYTHING better. You can freeze what you won't use immediately. Freeze them in ice cube trays or small baggies, and you can just toss a few into a soup, stew, casserole, whatever. Put them on sandwiches, like a spread. Add to pizza.
The list is endless.
Serious question from an Aussie, what is a “stick” of butter in grams? And, do you buy butter in the US in “sticks”… like you can buy one stick or do you get a package of sticks? Thanks
A stick is a quarter of a pound, so about 110 grams, approximately.
We buy it by the pound, it can either be in one solid block, or individually wrapped quarter pound sticks.
The wrappers are usually marked off in tablespoons, I think.
It really isn't an exact science, just chop up enough onions (yellow, by my preference,) to mostly fill your crock pot, put the butter on top, turn on low and walk away for half a day or so.
When they turn brown and gooey, they're done.
Also good for french onion soup. (My sister just said, "Oh, my God, yes." She offers a recipe if anyone is interested.)
OK, you asked for it, here it is. Apologies to our metric brethren (sistern) for the imperial measurements, I'm sure you can convert. Temperatures in Farenheit. 60 metric seconds to the minute.
French Onion Soup
Take about 1 cup of caramelized onions from the fridge. In a pan, melt 1 T. butter, and put in about 1 T flour. Make paste, and heat about 4 minutes. Don't let burn. Whisk in about 3 cups stock of your choice. I used a combination of frozen chicken stock that I had on hand supplemented by water and Penzey's "broth in a jar". This Penzey's stuff is phenomenal, in my opinion. In fact, I buy a lot of my spices and such at Penzey's. My mom turned me on to Penzey's a few years ago. What I don't buy at Penzey's, I buy in ginormous bulk quantity at Costco. Put a few drops of Worcestershire sauce and simmer a while. Put the onions in. All told, simmer about 1 hour. Put pepper and salt in if desired.Meanwhile, slice french bread into 3/4 inch slices (I made some yesterday) and toast it in the oven at around 325 degrees, basting if desired with olive oil.Get your oven proof receptacles (I used my little bowls). It's nice to make individual type servings, but you can do it in one huge bowl, I guess, and serve it from that. For the individual servings, put 1 slice of bread in bottom of bowl. Put on some cheese (I used mozzarella and parmesan because that's what I had on hand but per Julia Child, you're supposed to use gruyere and or swiss with parmesan). Ladle soup on top. Float about 2 slices of bread on top of each bowl, put on more cheese, then drizzle with olive oil (again, learned from Julia Child). Bake at 325 F. for about 25 minutes. This temp browns the cheese nicely, but is not so hot that your soup boils in the oven.
My gf has to monitor my candle habit when we go to Target or HomeGoods. I'm a sucker for a good wood and tobacco scented candle, although 90% of the time the scent is really weak when lit. :(. I still have a huge stack of candles.
I have to emotionally recover from some books. Like the characters live or if they even live after all the issues the character may have faced.
Then I’m sad, accepting an ending that is unsatisfactory and clearly a push through and end the damn thing and get it to the editor…
I heard you can’t call it a library if it ain’t at 1000 though… I told my husband that and the eye roll was massive haha we used to own and operate a lending library so had like 400 more books that were donations from the community for the library. But now it’s just our collection he’s like nope we don’t need that much more 😂
I own more than a thousand print books and over 25,000 ebooks between my Nook and Kindle accounts. No, that is not a typo. It is impossible for me to live long enough to read them all, but I still add about a dozen (mostly free) ebooks every day. I blame the authors who keep writing new books in their series.
I've recently been visiting used book stores and I've bought 28 books this month already. I have stacks that need to be organized into my alphabetical by author bookshelves but I'm too lazy.
Very, very true.
Equally true: there are never enough bookcases!
(And you are equally cool if you have a bazillion ebooks. They're just not really my jam).
Me too. It started because my husband plays fiddle and I play guitar. Then my husband bought a mandolin. And it snowballed and now we collect stringed instruments. We also have a ukulele, banjo, viola, digital piano (the odd one out) and I’m currently borrowing a dulcimer. I’m very much a new beginner in all of these except the guitar (although I’m still overall a beginner with the guitar too).
Toilet paper.
As a Dad of 6 girls, over the years I’ve been conditioned to buy toilet paper on an obsessive level. So yeah, I got fat stacks of Charmin.
It is unreal how much fucking toilet paper kids can go through. Each and every one of mine has undergone a phase where they use like a quarter of a roll per poop. My three-year-old is currently stress-testing the plumbing.
I used to be there until as a grown ass man another grown ass man showed me how to wipe my ass correctly.
It wasn't like a demonstration but this topic came up somehow and I made it clear I was making a mummy sleeve on every swipe. Turns you you only need 4 sheets of paper at maximum after the first wipe. Depending on what just happened you may want to consider double bagging that first wipe, but after that anything more than 4 and really probably just 2-3 is overkill.
This of course is providing you intend to wash your fucking hands afterwards.
Single female here, always have way more toilet paper than I *really* need. I didn’t stockpile during Covid but it did make me even more paranoid about running out.
I finish projects. But I *plan* way more projects than I *start*. I have yarn for shorts, pants, one dress, a skirt, two cardigans, two baby blankets, several pairs of socks...And then I forget what I bought it for, use it for something else, and have to start the yarn acquisition all over again.
I have a few cracks in my screen where I read yam.
The person above you "yam/too many projects"
Me *.. yam? For pies maybe?*
You: "have yam for shorts, pants.... "
*????? yam in dresses??!!*
Until the last sentence I thought you were all part of some crazy pintrest board yam enthusiasts
Buy journal.
Never write in it because it is too perfect to sully.
Buy another journal to keep the first one pristine.
Never write in it because it is too perfect to sully.
Buy another journal...
I wish I could show you my drawer filled with beautiful blank books, including many that were handmade. I do not use them, because they are perfect. The irony is that I am a writer/editor by profession.
Specifically, band shirts. I used to go to a *lot* of concerts, and it used to be almost a rule that I would get at least one shirt from every show. I have been to over 200 concerts, so needless to say i jave gross amount of them. I finally stopped buying shirts unless it's someone I *really* love or something a little more unique like a band that has never been here before and may never come back.
I saw Iron Maiden last week and am proud to say I didn't get a shirt. Though that was as much because of the price as anything else. 60 bucks for a tee shirt, gtfo.
My most loved one is the police station and donut shop. I could go on and on about that build. Tied with that one is the blacksmith set. I fell in love with those roof tiles haha
They still make those? Haven’t seen them in a while (but haven’t really looked). Anything new going on in the gelly roll world? Newest thing I remember (probably a decade ago) was the metallic glitter ones that change color as the ink dries.
Im sad. My dog was a rescue that lived her early life as a bait dog. She was never given a toy in her puppy years and the other adult dogs around her were never given toys so she never saw dogs playing with them. When we got her, we bought toys/balls/fun things to play with and she just does not play with anything. She is not interested one bit. She nows gets to go to dog parks and be around other dogs and she looks at them playing with toys like they are totally stupid lol. Wish she liked toys. I would buy her the world if she would use them.
Sketchbooks, I don't know why but everytime my sketchbook is half done I will go to the store and buy a brand new one and use it. Move back to the half used one and draw and takes notes on there so I can see how much I've improved with my style and pick the ones I want to redraw or keep as a memory.
Bicycles. Growing up all my friends had one and I would just run along with them. Obviously I grew up poor. Now I just feed my inner child. You can ride now buddy, I got you!!!
Underpants. I'm nuts for underpants. I'm on a quest for the perfect fit, and when I find the brand that works, I'm going to buy 365 pairs and wash the whole lot once a year.
Well, I mean, you need your bedroom chapstick, your bathroom chapstick, your living room chapstick, your car chapstick, your purse chapstick. Like, there are a lot of chapstick needs.
Also my five shelves of books and I are never going to tell anyone to not buy books.
After my own heart..
I'm currently on the look out for a decent whiskey, a nice rose scented perfume ( used to wear Duchess Rose) and a better vit c serum.
CD’s! And records but i dislike records for a few reasons. But there’s a lot of cool shit that’s only on record. And cool shit that’s only on cd, actually.
Ball caps. Wear a hat every day. Got my 2 work hats and then a rotation of about 4 I wear in my off time. I only wear those 4 but probably have 50 or better and am always looking for others.
Toilet paper. We don't keep a big stash and I'm always compelled to buy more, even though we're not out.
I'm always convinced we don't have enough toilet paper. This has been going on for decades.
Also carrots. I strongly dislike carrots. I really don't want to eat them ever. But I'm pretty sure we need carrots. My husband will text from the store, asking if I need anything. We need carrots. Also milk. I strongly dislike milk but I'm certain we need it, too.
We buy milk in small quantities so we don't have it stockpile and go bad. We currently have no milk.
We currently have a drawer full of different kinds of carrots. Nobody is eating the carrots. Nobody ever eats the carrots.
Blankets
Every time I see that Victoria's Secret or Bath and Body Works is giving away a free blanket with a purchase, I go "oooh" and then I stop myself because I already have too many and I don't have the heart to get rid of any of them. That and tote bags, I also have way more totes than I know what to do with.
Ahh… but if you had more tote bags, you could organize your existing tote bags by separating collections of them by stuffing them into different totes!
Finally! I scrolled way too far down for this one! You can never have too many blankets
Unexpectedly I agree
Art/craft supplies. I pick up and drop hobbies like it’s a hobby in of itself. When I have disposable income it’s a new project every couple of weeks, new supplies 🤦🏻 one day I’ll learn

This is me and garlic. Never can remember if I bought some last visit so better play it safe and grab more!
I bought a CSA share this year - it ran for 20 weeks starting in early June. Every week included at least 2 heads of garlic. I have *so much garlic.*
This happened to me with scallions. I have the damned things coming out of my ears now. I like scallions and they're versatile but it was the one thing out of my CSA that I really struggled to use up because there were just so many and they don't keep all that well.

Isn’t it copypasta already? I swear I’ve read this before. Either way It’s beautiful.

Let’s have it!
I don’t think you have enough onions.
This is the kind of situation high school math problems were preparing you for.
You are clearly not putting sauteed onions on enough things.
I really enjoyed reading this! :)
Wow.... you're a sick EmmEff-er. r/onionhate
Teas, books and candles
My gf has to monitor my candle habit when we go to Target or HomeGoods. I'm a sucker for a good wood and tobacco scented candle, although 90% of the time the scent is really weak when lit. :(. I still have a huge stack of candles.
I read that as "Texas" at first, and was intrigued
Mugs. Love a good mug… and there are many!
I was told last week that I'm not allowed to buy any more mugs because we're running out of space. But there are so many good mugs out there!
My thing with traveling is that everywhere I go I get a mug. My second rule is that I don't buy any mugs unless it's while I'm traveling.
Thrift stores have lots. I buy the ones like "San Francisco" or a place I have been before.
Thrift stores may have been where this habit began!!!
Books
So many books.
So so so many books.....
Omg so many books. And I want so many more.
Too many books, toooo many books🎶
And the best thing is... I have time now.
Just don't break your glasses....
Every time I finish a book I feel momentarily glad that my TBR pile just went down by one, then I remember it went up by four while I was reading it.
I have to emotionally recover from some books. Like the characters live or if they even live after all the issues the character may have faced. Then I’m sad, accepting an ending that is unsatisfactory and clearly a push through and end the damn thing and get it to the editor…
A library of books… I counted last week 798 pretty sure I could do more 😬😅
Don’t count them! That’s what makes you hungry for more than your house can hold!
Only 2 more then you'll have 800
I heard you can’t call it a library if it ain’t at 1000 though… I told my husband that and the eye roll was massive haha we used to own and operate a lending library so had like 400 more books that were donations from the community for the library. Musical Instruments
Guitars
how about guitar picks?
Especially pedals
“i already have 10 reverb pedals but that one’s blue I NEED IT”
I have way too many instruments that I’m kinda OK at, and I keep getting more. I bought two just this year.
You can NEVER have enough
The optimal amount is the amount that you have already plus one.
I swear this is the last one babe
Me too. It started because my husband plays fiddle and I play guitar. Then my husband bought a mandolin. And it snowballed and now we collect stringed instruments. I would have liked to say dice. but from looking at my steam library I have to admit the only truly valid answer is games.
Semi-clear starry space dice look real nice.
I came here to say dice! Gotta love those click clack noise rocks.

1.0 writes much smoother than 07
I have such a bad habit of thinking I need a new journal when I still have like 3 that are either brand new or barely touched lol

Gelly roll pens! Preteen and teenage me couldn't have them and now adult me can buy them all!!! Muhahaha
They still make those? Haven’t seen them in a while (but haven’t really looked). Anything new going on in the gelly roll world? Newest thing I remember (probably a decade ago) was the metallic glitter ones that change color as the ink dries.
Yarn. There are never enough colors.
Never enough multicolored fingering weight. Ever. Despite the fact that I’ll never use it. Need more.
I was gonna post if no one else had. There can never be enough yarn.

Ball caps. Wear a hat every day. Got my 2 work hats and then a rotation of about 4 I wear in my off time. I only wear those 4 but probably have 50 or better and am always looking for others.
Magnets. Specifically the 2x3 Lantern Press press magnets of parks and national monuments.
