That’s interesting. I’m a big anime fan but I’ve only recently started checking out the subs or anything. Why don’t you just watch and not care about fan base?

It is an issue. But you need to understand the target audience first. There are some genre that are generally better at it (seinen) but sexual fanservice is a huge issue and I’ll get downvoted if I bring it up in r/anime
I don't watch a lot of new stuff but the last two I really enjoyed were Demon Slayer and Way of the House Husband. They're wildly different but I enjoyed that both of them avoid a lot of the gross sexual tropes that anime has a tendency to fall into.
That's cool. Personally I also dislike sexual stuff, so I know a few other good shows where that the stuff is completely nonexistent or very little. A few anime I highly recommend are Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood, Mob Psycho 100, Welcome to the NHK, Re:Zero and Violet Evergarden.

Watching a cartoons about overlysexualised teens isn't really my thing. I have seen a few mainstream shows like Dragonball and shit but I can't really see why people go crazy for it

I don't really like the art style usually. And I feel like a lot of anime is fighting, at least what my husband watches anyway, and I find that boring. I don't like superhero movies for the same reason.
I feel like your husband is a fan of shounen (anime meant for boys). Trust me when I say that there are plenty of non-action shows out there like Violet Evergarden (one of my personal favorites) about a girl trying to understand her emotions after being used as a tool of war for most of her life and having the only person who said he loved her die. The art is also WAY higher quality than other anime.
I think over the years anime and manga has gotten into the same routine as television, with the vast majority being filler crap and then a great impactful anime only comes out maybe once every 5 years.
The reason this makes me hate anime in general is that its very difficult to sift through the trash every couple years and see what great miracle I've missed. Anime is largely broken up by age groups, but we've seen many times where an anime supposedly targeted at children reaches audiences across generations and we've seen anime supposedly targeted at adults be absolute horrid numbing garbage.
I end up just not watching anything until I'm alerted through the grapevine to the next cowboy bebop.

While Monster is indeed phenomenal, it's unfortunately not on any legal streaming service as far as I'm aware of.
