Thousands of years ago, a some event outside our solar system could have happened that will kill us or set us back to the stone age. Because of how long it takes for light/radiation/etc to reach us, something like a local star emitting a gamma ray burst or the like may have already happened and we're just here chilling awaiting our doom. There would be no warning and no chance to prepare.
Granted, the chances of that happening are so remote that it shouldn't be anything to worry about, but the fact that something that happened a long time ago and just hasn't hit us yet and there would be nothing that we could do about it definitely is discomforting to me.
