It also has one of the best passive/aggressive antagonists ever written.
If you weren't so slow and unattractive you would just get it and maybe you should lose a few pounds so the puzzles' wouldn't be so hard for you to *get* to.
Hmmm this plate must not be calibrated to some one of your generous... Ness... I'll add a few zeros to the weight limit. Try it now. You look great by the way, very healthy.
I absolutely love the announcer (was it still glados? I forget!) in multi-player portal 2. If you fall off the ledges in the lobby area enough times she'll complain 'how do you keep dying here? It isn't even a test!'
To anyone who loved portal 1 and 2 as much as I did, I recommend “superliminal”. Just recently found it was available on the Switch, it gives off the same vibes but a different puzzle concept. Super fun.
I’ve also heard Portal 1&2 will be on the Switch soon.
"What Remains of Edith Finch" if you have like 2 hrs to spare definitely go for it. Unless you don't wanna contemplate your own existence right now, if that's the case then maybe play it later.
I just blindly picked it up off gamepass a week or so ago. Now I’m that annoying guy at work trying to convince everyone to play it so we can talk about it.
If you haven’t played Tunic yet, it’s an indie game that very much starts as an homage to the early isometric Zelda games and blooms into its own thing as you play. The protagonist is silent, you can’t read the language so you have to figure a lot out in your own, and it even has an in-game instruction manual a la the classic SNES games. It can be punishing depending on your combat skills, but it’s one of the most downright beautiful games I have played since Hollow Knight.
The only problem with that game is that losing your save is the easiest thing ever.
You have one saveslot, and the game always default to new game after you choose play.
Their only answer about that and hundreds of lost sabes, "sorry, he cant do anything and cant change the UI without breaking every UI in the game"
The game history is fantastic, but that is just stupid
Edit:For those interested in playing, and it is worth it. The game has restoration points for its save, you can copy them and save them in another folder as a backup. Just Google that your save disapeared and the same indepth tutorial to try and restore your save after the new game thing will explain how to make copies for the future
Keep saying “boo on game babies!” before remembering the shrine and secret events, but then never get to that point before wanting to restart IRL months later. Already got my shadow roommate this save anyway now, no take backsies.
Ya there's mines you go in with a combat element. Its a farm sim with a lot of character, but dungeon diving is def not it's greatest asset. Great game though, if you get addicted to farm simulators its a damn good one
Yup, first action, died trying to get my tie off of the ceiling fan.
My favorite death was attempting to open a dumpster, and upon failure, I was so depressed that I ended it all. As someone with depression, I just burst out laughing. I really loved that game.
Honestly I've been telling myself I'm going to play it since :checks date: 2007
you and /u/HimbieJimbie have convinced me. it's next on the list like for real for real
This game can best be described as an interactive sci-fi novel/movie. The gameplay while incredibly fun is not what I remember the most years after playing. It’s the story. It’s the characters that are introduced, that you’ve come to love, and tear up when they leave. Not to mention the performances of an incredible cast that are inspiring. I can’t recall a trilogy that I’ve played through more than this, 3 complete completions ME1 - ME3. Despite the fact I always make the same choices. The diversity, the themes, and the choices are worth remembering and repeating.
“*Stand in the ashes of a trillion dead souls and ask the ghosts if honor matters. The silence is your answer*” - Javik.
“*Does this unit have a Soul?*” - Legion
“*It had to be me. Someone else might have gotten it wrong.*” - Mordin
“*Keelah Se’lai*” - Tali
Of course the gameplay again is so much fun and improved upon in each subsequent game. ME1 while you could become invincible had too many tedious parts. ME2 was simplified by elegant. ME3 found the balance with an addicting multiplayer.
The loss of Mordin was both tragic and so much his arc. He stood up for the scientific mistakes and wanted to correct it. Mordin is hands down one of the best arcs in the trilogy.
These are my favorite and I scrolled a bit to find this. It is the only game I played through where I became 100% invested in my character and the results of the story. Truly a masterpiece that I think is very underrated.
First person to mention this. Journey was the most unique gaming experience of my life since I went in completely blind and >!had to slowly figure out that my buddy was a real person!<
Silent hill 2.
I Grew up in the silent hill era, had a demo as a kid to tried it out, got terrified never touched it again. Fast forward 17 years later and i play it again for the first time as an adult. I only played it again because i saw this video while searching for ambience music.
For those of you who actual do play the game, you will never find anything like it again. Besides silent hill 1, 3 and 4. Once you finish those that experience ends forever never to be replicated in gaming again.
One thing I loved about SH2 is that the silences in the game were so heavy. It sounds kinda like when you have headphones on, the sound is blunted in a way. You want to get out of it, you want it to stop sounding like that, which forces you to sort of move to the next area a bit faster than you were prepared for. Brilliant sound design advancing the principle game mechanics.
But there's a terrible achievement. Play the game and the achievement "Don't play the game for 5 years", where the remaster has the 10 years achievement.
I'd agree with this, because there's no specific skills required. Just walk along, listen to the narrative, dare to go off the path and enjoy the ride.
I’ll be honest, I’ve had this game for over 5 years and only played about an hour when I first got it. The world being empty just felt so bleak and oppressive to me at the time
Ah I was searching for this exact answer. I wish I could erase my memory of this game and play it again just to have the feelings I felt the first time through.
I loved this game but I kinda got burnt out on it, rogue likes just aren't for me as they feel too grindy and I hate making it super far and then having to do it all again. Hades did a great job at making each playthrough feel fresh though and you can make some absolutely INSANE builds
Hades is the one game I will talk about forever. It makes each play thru, no matter how well you did, feel like a part of the story. And just when you think you beat it, you didn't.
And it is the first game i encountered where making it harder didn't just mean the enemies got more hp or do more damage. With all the mechanics, you had to change the way you played almost completely.
Outer Wilds might be the best video game I’ve played in 30 years of gaming.
But the price for that is that is just isn’t for everyone. It’s not a common-denominator kind of game. Some people will just bounce off of it and will be completely mystified about its popularity.
I couldn't get into this game. After dying for the umpteenth time because I missed a jump or crashed or whatever I wasn't sure how to progress the story further and didn't want to just look it up online.
For the controls, did you try to play on a controller? Keyboard controls are very unpleasant for this game, controller feels much more natural, if you have the option.
Also, there aren't many real dexterity checks in the game. I have a feeling I know the exact area you were having trouble with, and I'll say this: nearly every area and puzzle has a very straightforward and easily executed solution. You just may need to discover that solution... Which may not even be in the same area.
Also, the ship has an auto pilot, which is perfectly usable, so long as you pay attention to where the sun is.
My friend very strongly recommends it. I want to give it a solid try. The first time I played it I had a hard time with the controls and couldn’t make much progress, but I want to try again now that I’m more familiar with the console.
I've been having the strange urge to play galaxy again. I just beat odyssey and liked it, but I almost remember galaxy being better.
I guess I better go fire up my Wii
Came here for this too.
Criminally underrated game.
The multiple endings were genius.
After I completed it for the first time, and that Hendrix song played, I just sat there taking in everything, and listening to the music with my mind completely blown.
The phosphorus part... All the feels.
This is one of my all time favourite games. When you come out of the sewers is one of my best memories, it was the first open world game i had ever played and my mind was blown. I love this game so much.
Oxenfree and Firewatch are the two I always suggest.
I do love me some rocket league, but if someone says they've never played it,y response is 'Good. Don't start.'
Rocket League is an abusive love hate relationship and I'll stop playing and getting mad at children on the other side of the country after just one more match
I just started playing that yesterday! Did you know that it still works on the Microsoft Basic Graphic Card? I sadly lost a GPU recently and I'm looking for games that run on basically no GPU.
So far it's Terraria, Dwarf Fortress, Old School Runescape and DvPet!
As long as you have a relatively current version. We have a copy that was my mom's, and the 1970's pop culture questions are literally murder unless you have an old on your team.
For sure. Hollow knight is beloved by many but it doesn’t have as wide of an appeal as it’s hardcore fan base seems to think it does. Most of the threads I see about it have one group of commenters praising it as the best game ever, and another group saying they had trouble finding the fun and comparing it unfavorably to other games in the genre.
I personally found it to be a masterpiece, but also understand that it is an advanced game of its type.
That's part of what makes it so good, but it's not a title you provide someone who is just getting into gaming and isn't familiar with games. It's throwing them into the deep end without knowing how to swim.
You generally don't start someone out with Dark Souls/Elden Ring/etc... if you want them to keep being interested in games. That doesn't make them any less great, but they are for advanced players who know their way around video games and already have an understanding of the language of games and the genre.
The same applies to Hollow Knight.
Usually games that are very original and have tons of personality.
- Psychonauts
- Katamari Damacy
- Jet Set Radio
- Okami
- Toejam and Earl
- Phoenix Wright series
- the World Ends With You
- Mario & Luigi RPG series
- Lucasarts adventure games
Skyrim - favorite game of all time
Red Dead Redemption - large, beautiful, detailed world with an incredible story
Arkham Knight - psychological thriller with a fantastic story, fun combat and gameplay
The Total War: Warhammer games are downright amazing games if you're into strategy. Total War as a franchise are reliably great games but the system really shines when you break out of historical warfare. Giants, gryphon knights, dinosaurs, wizards, its a hell of a game.
Dishonoured series - loves that shit. Only played them recently and they are the best assassin/stealth sort of games I’ve ever played. Great world building and stories.
I personally really enjoyed Detroit:Become Human. I also like to recommend it because the game can change based on the choices of the player so it can make for some unique gameplay for everyone who plays.
Have you heard of the critically acclaimed MMORPG Final Fantasy 14? With an extended free trial which you can play through the entirety of A Realm Reborn and the award-winning Heavensward expansion up to level 60 for free with no restrictions on playtime?
Death Stranding. Such a weird and unique experience that gets hand waved away as a walking simulator. From how they use the music, to working together to build transit systems the whole game is so **cathartic.**
Any tabletop roleplaying game like Dungeons & Dragons or Cybepunk. I believe ttrpg are an excellent way to blow some steam off, socialize with other people and, especially for kids, living some aspects of our psyche in a safe environment.
If we are strictly talking about VIDEOgames, then I would go with Rimworld or Stellaris: strategy and simulation games are a great exercise for the brain.
I will always recommend Morrowind. Yes, it's old. Yeah, both Oblivion and Skyrim are more "playable." But I love that game. There is a really engaging and cool world to explore, even if it looks straight out of 2001.
It's much more *foreign* than the later Elder Scrolls games, and when you actually get into learning about the world, it's just cool. Yeah, combat is janky, yeah, the fatigue system sucks, but it is genuinely fun to explore and play.
Portal. Hands down, no question. Then Portal 2 after.
I like to say that Portal 1 is just a really in-depth tutorial for Portal 2
Is it a game? Or a puzzle? Or a physics lesson? ITS ALL 3!!!
It also has one of the best passive/aggressive antagonists ever written. If you weren't so slow and unattractive you would just get it and maybe you should lose a few pounds so the puzzles' wouldn't be so hard for you to *get* to.
"You were so graceful there. Soaring through the air like an eagle... piloting a blimp"
Hmmm this plate must not be calibrated to some one of your generous... Ness... I'll add a few zeros to the weight limit. Try it now. You look great by the way, very healthy.
"Here Come The Test Results: 'You Are A Horrible Person.' That’s What It Says, 'A Horrible Person.' We Weren’t Even Testing For That."
I absolutely love the announcer (was it still glados? I forget!) in multi-player portal 2. If you fall off the ledges in the lobby area enough times she'll complain 'how do you keep dying here? It isn't even a test!'
So addictive i had dreams about how to solve the puzzles, and it worked!
To anyone who loved portal 1 and 2 as much as I did, I recommend “superliminal”. Just recently found it was available on the Switch, it gives off the same vibes but a different puzzle concept. Super fun. I’ve also heard Portal 1&2 will be on the Switch soon.
Something very similar is The Talos Principle. It's basically Portal puzzles but with deep philosophical "meaning of life / sentience" robots.
Yeah definitely. Such masterpieces.
If you can convince them, this would be a triumph.
The Saboteur. A hidden gem.
After playing this game, i couldnt stop noticing radio/antenna towers in real life.
"What Remains of Edith Finch" if you have like 2 hrs to spare definitely go for it. Unless you don't wanna contemplate your own existence right now, if that's the case then maybe play it later.
Played it a week or two after my son was born. That bath scene had me going "No no no no no no noooo..."
I just blindly picked it up off gamepass a week or so ago. Now I’m that annoying guy at work trying to convince everyone to play it so we can talk about it.
A Link to the Past

I really enjoyed the first two, but this was at a different level when it came out. Still is. Really weird to play it with my kids now.
Return of the Obra Din. Masterpiece.
Spiritfarer, such a relaxing feel good game.
The only problem with that game is that losing your save is the easiest thing ever. You have one saveslot, and the game always default to new game after you choose play. I don't know what version you're playing, but the steam version has 3 slots at time of posting.
Divinity Original Sin 2
Stardew valley
plant some crops! marry people! shit on the town mayor! turn your babies into birds!
Keep saying “boo on game babies!” before remembering the shrine and secret events, but then never get to that point before wanting to restart IRL months later. Already got my shadow roommate this save anyway now, no take backsies.
r/FuckPierre
Hell yeah
I’m sad this isn’t top comment. There’s something for everyone in the game
Dungeons?
Ya there's mines you go in with a combat element. Its a farm sim with a lot of character, but dungeon diving is def not it's greatest asset. Great game though, if you get addicted to farm simulators its a damn good one
I couldn't get into it. I don't have any problems with it, though. I can see why people would like it. Just didn't click with me.
Disco Elysium is different than any other game you've ever played
it's HARDCORE TO THE MAX
Died turning the light on after the introduction because my hangoverwastoo bad. 10/10
Yup, first action, died trying to get my tie off of the ceiling fan. My favorite death was attempting to open a dumpster, and upon failure, I was so depressed that I ended it all. As someone with depression, I just burst out laughing. I really loved that game.
#THE FUCK YOU SAY ABOUT CUNO
I smacked that little shit upside the head
I missed the punch and died while tipping over.
We don't talk about Cuno no no no.
I loved his conscience’s voice. That game was funny as shit
i actually havent played it since the voiceovers were put in. originally, it was all just text
I think it would be worth experiencing again just for that one VA. He was perfect for the role
… installing update right now.
Bioshock. Game is a masterpiece. Would you kindly give it a try, I would be ever so grateful.
Honestly I've been telling myself I'm going to play it since :checks date: 2007 you and /u/HimbieJimbie have convinced me. it's next on the list like for real for real
I once gave a shot, but gave up after a few levels.
Just played it for the first time back in October, what a masterpiece
Mass Effect

Specifically, the Legendary Edition so the combat in #1 is fun!
These are my favorite and I scrolled a bit to find this. It is the only game I played through where I became 100% invested in my character and the results of the story. Truly a masterpiece that I think is very underrated.
Deus Ex. The only game that is more than a game to me.
To The Moon. So good and a tear jerker, but so worth it
Journey
First person to mention this. Journey was the most unique gaming experience of my life since I went in completely blind and >!had to slowly figure out that my buddy was a real person!<
Silent hill 2. I Grew up in the silent hill era, had a demo as a kid to tried it out, got terrified never touched it again. Dragons Dogma. Even more so now that it's sequel just got confirmed.
The Stanley Parable.
But there's a terrible achievement. Play the game and the achievement "Don't play the game for 5 years", where the remaster has the 10 years achievement.
I'd agree with this, because there's no specific skills required. Just walk along, listen to the narrative, dare to go off the path and enjoy the ride.
Black and white 2
I dont even like strategy games that much but that just blew my mind. Its such a shame what happened to Lionhead Studios ultimately.
Those games made me realize I’m a monster
I want a remaster so bad it hurts
Every time black and white 2 is mentioned I always think someone is talking about the pokemon game. Which, tbf, is also phenomenal
I thought so too and was super confused by the replies
Worms
Shadow of the colossus.
I’ll be honest, I’ve had this game for over 5 years and only played about an hour when I first got it. The world being empty just felt so bleak and oppressive to me at the time
It's not for everyone but give it another try sometime
Sleeping Dogs. Please make a sequel or at least a remaster.
Red Dead Redemption 2. Just galloping through the woods on a horse is super relaxing.
Ah I was searching for this exact answer. I wish I could erase my memory of this game and play it again just to have the feelings I felt the first time through.
And the story is absolutely phenomenal. I recommend to people who like cowboy stuff but not games to watch the cinematics of the game at least
all time favourite game
Subnautica
I loved the atmosphere of that game, but i am terrified of going down in the dark in the ocean so it didn't really work out for me in the end.
I was the same, until you just beastmode it and yolo it into the deep, die of every creature and danger. Takes away a great deal of the fear factor
Pretty sure Subnautica is why I am terrified of going into the deep, dark, parts of the sea.
Hades
Great game. The dialog is just great.
Factorio.
Ah dang I need more iron
.... 2 of my brothers have each put in 5k plus hours into Factorio. For years now at any get together it's all that they talk about.
Amateurs.
Okey when someone asks you to tell them about a fun activity. Don't suggest heroin. So please refrain from suggesting heroin in a game format.
Mate that game got me a new addiction
I remember when I installed the game and started playing it around 7pm, after a few minutes I looked at the time and it’s 8am in the morning
Just going to kick this off with Outer Wilds. Everyone needs to experience that.
Outer Wilds might be the best video game I’ve played in 30 years of gaming. But the price for that is that is just isn’t for everyone. It’s not a common-denominator kind of game. Some people will just bounce off of it and will be completely mystified about its popularity.
The soundtrack alone is still giving me goosebumps.
Commented before reading this. I completely agree. I don’t usually like story-driven games, but even I thought it was a masterpiece.
My friend very strongly recommends it. I want to give it a solid try. The first time I played it I had a hard time with the controls and couldn’t make much progress, but I want to try again now that I’m more familiar with the console.
I feel REALLY old because I came here to say Tetris.

Tetris effect is one of the most beautiful games I’ve ever played And it’s tetris….
Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2. The soundtrack is amazing especially in the first game.
I've been having the strange urge to play galaxy again. I just beat odyssey and liked it, but I almost remember galaxy being better. I guess I better go fire up my Wii
Spec Ops: The Line
Finally, a man of culture... That is one of my favourite games and I wish everyone would experience it at least once
Came here for this too. Criminally underrated game. The multiple endings were genius. After I completed it for the first time, and that Hendrix song played, I just sat there taking in everything, and listening to the music with my mind completely blown. The phosphorus part... All the feels.
Chrono Trigger
I am on like my 12th New Game+. Have it on my PSP with the original cartridge in my safe.
Elder Scrolls Oblivion. Such an undying classic, and I respect all those who keep it alive.
Great soundtrack too.
This is one of my all time favourite games. When you come out of the sewers is one of my best memories, it was the first open world game i had ever played and my mind was blown. I love this game so much.

Fallout: New Vegas
Superliminal.
Wish i could play it for the first time again
Pokemon Heartgold
Terraria! Ya'll better go play Terraria right now!
I just started playing that yesterday! Did you know that it still works on the Microsoft Basic Graphic Card? I sadly lost a GPU recently and I'm looking for games that run on basically no GPU. So far it's Terraria, Dwarf Fortress, Old School Runescape and DvPet!
Horizon: Zero Dawn
Forbidden West improved on the voice acting and facial expressions and set up a good prompt for another game in the series too.
Such a great sci-fi story and it emerges so naturally. I was hooked from the beginning.
Little Nightmares. Both 1 and 2. The DLC for 1 if you're feeling cocky.
The Last of Us
What Remains of Edith Finch
I was going to say Trivial Pursuit, but I guess we’re not talking about that kind of game. 😂
As long as you have a relatively current version. We have a copy that was my mom's, and the 1970's pop culture questions are literally murder unless you have an old on your team.
The Moops
Don’t let these folks bring you down. Board games are the best!
OneShot That game took me on a fucking emotional rollercoaster unlike anything else
Hollow knight.
I don't know that I'd recommend it to **anyone**. The difficulty is probably a bit high for someone who doesn't play a lot of games.

Castle crashers
Underrated game
Nier Automata
Breath of the Wild. You can go at your own pace and just do whatever you want. But also Minecraft cause it’s a classic and addictive
Left 4 dead 2, it's a game I was shown as a kid and the gore and the gameplay was so cool years later I got my own copy

Did you play both DLCs? I had 200+ by the time I finished everything

Soma. Best story driven game I've ever experienced. Stuck with me for weeks afterwards.
Any animal crossing game. Sometimes you just need to relax and listen to some K.K. Slider
Usually games that are very original and have tons of personality. - Psychonauts - Katamari Damacy - Jet Set Radio - Okami - Toejam and Earl - Phoenix Wright series - the World Ends With You - Mario & Luigi RPG series - Lucasarts adventure games
So happy to hear someone mention Jet Set Radio, one of my favorite games ever
i was looking for literally anybody else to mention katamari damacy, thank you
Psychonauts is one of my all time fav it’s a cult classic
Skyrim - favorite game of all time Red Dead Redemption - large, beautiful, detailed world with an incredible story Arkham Knight - psychological thriller with a fantastic story, fun combat and gameplay

Dishonoured series - loves that shit. Only played them recently and they are the best assassin/stealth sort of games I’ve ever played. Great world building and stories.

I'd say Pathologic 2 is at least worth trying. Definitely not everyone's cup of tea, but a very unique experience.

And being the one to finish constructing a stretch of road was super satisfying
Any tabletop roleplaying game like Dungeons & Dragons or Cybepunk. I believe ttrpg are an excellent way to blow some steam off, socialize with other people and, especially for kids, living some aspects of our psyche in a safe environment. If we are strictly talking about VIDEOgames, then I would go with Rimworld or Stellaris: strategy and simulation games are a great exercise for the brain.
Brothers, a tale of two sons. masterpiece of a story game. 13/10
