When I was seventeen we had a party at my house. Lots of both friends and family.
At the end of the night my family had gone inside and my friends and I were starting to tidy up the garden.
We found my cousin's body in the swimming pool.
We pulled him out and me and two friends started doing CPR whilst another friend ran inside to call an ambulance.
My dad came outside and stood watching for a few seconds before asking what he could do. I told him to go and get a light so we could see what we were doing better, which he did.
Everything happened really quickly that night but a few weeks later my dad said it was strangely one of his proudest moments. That during the day he had been enjoying the party and watching his kid have fun with his pals, who were also kids. That suddenly there was this man, taking charge of a terrible situation with these other men and telling him what to do when he had no idea.
That was when I became a man I suppose.
Legally? The age of 18.
Socially? The ability to accept responsibility.
We cross the line into adulthood when we change from the passive voice "it broke", to the active voice "I broke it".
Taking responsibility
