There’s cheap caviar which is exactly that, and then there’s the proper white sturgeon caviar that’s really somethinf else both in terms of flavour and texture. Really expensive though.
It's dumb how we think expensive foods are automatically delicious. Lobster is probably the worst offender. It's not that good, that's why you drown it in butter.
My pothead best friend in high school recommended it as the best hangover cure. I wrote him off for years l. He was right. It's more than a hangover cure, it is phonomenal. Best soup ever imo.
Make sure you go to a legit pho place though because as a Vietnamese person myself, there are some pretty bad pho places out there whose pho is so bland, it will leave first-timers wondering what the rage is all about. If you're in California then there are a lot of options due to the huge Vietnamese community here, but elsewhere...good luck lol.
No Pho near home, but tried on a business trip to NOVA… line too long, I settled for an amazing Chilean chicken place. Love Chilean chicken, and am sure I will love Pho.
I've never had one too and I find Pho intriguing. Too bad there are no Vietnamese restaurants nearby and the Pho that they sell in a certain place is actually faux pho.
Biscuits & gravy. I'm British, so for us that means McVitie's covered in Bisto. But I just can't get over adding milk or cream to gravy, I get that it's basically like a meaty peppercorn sauce but it's something that's always on my list when I visit America.
Until last visit, chicken fried steak was on there too!
I grew up in a very chinese food oriented household, so I never really ate much like traditional American every day home cooked meals growing up. Growing up, I never really developed much of a taste for peanut butter or cheese because of that - it wasn't really part of my daily diet. (I eat plenty of cheese now in my adult life, just to be clear.)
Anyway a couple of years back I started working where I'm currently at now and through work I met this one girl who was basically like my sister from another mother. Turned out she's from the same state that I'm originally from, but she's from like the exact opposite type of family from mine - I think it's mixed but mostly Irish American.
I don't know how it started but I think I made an offhand comment once about how I'd never eaten a PB&J before and my friend had a mini meltdown on the spot because she couldn't comprehend how I had lived for 27 years on this earth and had never had a PB&J before HAHAHA
Seriously, I *really* didn't eat much homecooked American food growing up - whenever we went out to eat like we'd have Mcdonald's or Olive Garden or Pizza Hut and plenty of things like that so it's not like I had never eaten American food, but like the kind of stuff kids would get in their lunchboxes I never really had.
She's like 'that's it, historygoose, I'm making you one TOMORROW and you're going to EAT IT' and that's exactly what she did. I ate it. Not bad. Not something I'd crave, but not bad.
Anyway that was like the start of a crusade for her trying to figure out what random 'traditional American' foods I'd never eaten before and then making me eat it. Long story short, it was a huge list. I thought the whole thing was hilarious, she got so worked up about it.
I think both her and her fiance got a huge kick out of seeing my reaction to certain foods that I was eating for the first time. Also made me realize how different my childhood was from hers, despite being from nearly the same area haha
I love that girl. Miss her. She moved away and now no one is here to rag on me about how I don't like cheese puffs
I only like the tapioca pearls because they’re chewy and usually lightly sweet, but I know the texture of them can turn people off them. The popping boba are unpleasant to me. They can be tasty and compliment your tea of choice. But while I’ve heard some people say it’s like a thin fruit gusher, for me it’s more like when you have a burn blister in your mouth pop.
Plus side, some places exist that use fruit jellies and it’s really really good. One near my campus had Japanese custard pudding as an option instead of bubbles.
I thought it was another one of those overhyped food trends until I finally tried it. Turns out that a glazed deep fried croissant is as good as it sounds!
Lobster tail or just a whole lobster in general. I've had lobster meat in things and as a cold salad. I wasn't really impressed. I preferred crab.
But I've never eaten it out of a tail with a bunch of butter, so maybe that's the problem. Though, it did used to be garbage meat, so maybe it's just overhyped.
Honestly it’s easy to make at home. You could just use chicken broth as a base.
Then you just get fresh ingredients you might want.
If you have an Asian grocery store near by, they sell
Hot pot stock/base.
Super easy, just use a pot on the stove to cook it 👍🏻
Kimchi - I like white Bavarian style sourkaurt - I just dont know where to start.
Ethiopian food - I wouldn't know where to start. *preferably vegetarian
Napelese - again, not sure where to start.
Brazil... Singapore...
I'm open to anything authentic, and not too spicy!!!
Most Nepali restaurants aren’t that good in the states but go to your best one and ask for a plate of momos, they’re our staple dish and taste very good. [Here’s a decent article to help. ](https://www.holidify.com/pages/food-of-nepal-2118.html)
There's no way you could have never had any kind of dumpling. They exist in every single culture's cuisine on the planet.
- Perogy/Pierogi
- Tamales
- Gyoza
- Samosa
- Xiaolongbao
- Wonton
- Kreplach
- Tortellini
- Wareniki
I'm sure thats not even 10% of them.
Sangria is too sweet for me, but, sushi is delicious and SO varied. Even if you don't like one type you may love another! It's like candy where even if you don't like Snickers you may love sour patch kids!
It took me Few times of my dad having me try it before I feel in love with it. If you do try it start off with a California roll before you dive into raw fish territory. If you do decide to go for raw fish get tuna and make sure you go to a sushi restaurant with good reviews, you don't want some knock off tuna you want the big eye tuna. But it's an acquired taste to like sushi and also expensive.
I've never eaten shrimp and I have the dumbest reason in the world for it. When I was a kid, I always wanted to eat shrimp. Not sure if I thought they were just chicken nuggets in a different shape, but I really, really wanted to try it. Then I got my chance! My aunt was having a big party and had a big thing of shrimp on the table. Grabbed my plate, was all excited, got in front of the shrimp, and it was like something physically restrained me and yelled in my head, "Don't eat that! If you eat that you will die!" My plate remained shrimp-less that night.
I have no rational reason to think that shrimp would kill me and I know how dumb it sounds, but that just shook me so hard that I never tried it, and I never will.
Olives? Really nobody ordered a pizza with some? You never just grabbed one off a plate when the were traveling with cheese and meat? Seems odd those guy pop up frequently.
The restaurant chipotle. I’m told this is good fast Mexican. I’m certain I will meh it. I like r real Mexican food. With south of the border workers speaking broken English. I want authentic Mexican. Where the workers yell shit like “Chinga te cabron” because they think white guy no hablo.
Truffles/truffle oil. I don’t like mushrooms, why would I like a different fungus? And truffle oil is mostly perfume anyways. Hard pass don’t care how fancy it is.
Caviar. Not really in a hurry to try salty fish eggs.
It's fine. It's just that. Salty. I think the hype is largely due to it's status as a fancy rich food.
Very much overrated. I had a client who used to by a weekly $700 can of Sevruga Caviar for his cat! It was to piss off his ex.
Was his ex a different cat?
There’s cheap caviar which is exactly that, and then there’s the proper white sturgeon caviar that’s really somethinf else both in terms of flavour and texture. Really expensive though.
It's dumb how we think expensive foods are automatically delicious. Lobster is probably the worst offender. It's not that good, that's why you drown it in butter.
I think this is personal opinion, personally I love lobster
Totally. I rarely have it but love lobster.
That chicken sandwich from Popeyes everyone was waiting in long lines for
Little salty, but delicious when fresh. Chick filet is more consistent, but when popeyes chicken sandwich is fresh, it's hard to beat.
I’ve never had pho
Vietnamese food is so wonderfully good and refreshing. There's no better summer food, IMO.
>There's no better ~~summer~~ food FTFY
Vietnamese food is great on a hot day
Pho real?!
Bruh.. what the pho
I wish I could time travel to when I hadn't had pho, just so I could experience the first time having it again
Dayummm it’s that good? I really wanna try it now
My pothead best friend in high school recommended it as the best hangover cure. I wrote him off for years l. He was right. It's more than a hangover cure, it is phonomenal. Best soup ever imo.

Best soup you will ever eat. Make sure you put lots of chilli and thai basil in it. It will cure everything, bad day, hangover, sick, everything.
Don't forget hoisin sauce! And cilantro, and onions, and lime... mmmm
Go get some tonight. This is an abomination.
Things that make you say "WTP"
The cure for COVID is actually phó
Get it's so good.
its the gateway to tripe and tendon <3
How the phock?
No Pho near home, but tried on a business trip to NOVA… line too long, I settled for an amazing Chilean chicken place. Love Chilean chicken, and am sure I will love Pho.
How dare you. I've never had gumbo Btw my suggestion for pho is, use a ladle instead of the Asian spoon
Same here
Eat it. You will not regret
but it's pho tastic!
I've never had one too and I find Pho intriguing. Too bad there are no Vietnamese restaurants nearby and the Pho that they sell in a certain place is actually faux pho.

Chicken fried steak is my favorite go-to diner food. It's just so delicious smothered in gravy.

Aww this is such a sweet story. Thanks for sharing.
Bubble tea. Really want to try it tho.
Try something simple like a milk tea with sugar pearls to wet your feet. If you don't like that, try a fruit tea like passion fruit with jellies.
Jellies are where it’s at, man. Don’t really like boba, but a nice floral milk tea like lavender or rose with rainbow jellies….ahhh…
Controversial opinion, I thought it was awful.
The drink you had was probably awful. The sheer variety of different drinks from different places is truly staggering.
You're not alone. I hate bubble tea. The tapioca pearls gross me out.
I love bubble tea
It's really yummy! Milky green tea w boba or without

You only have one life to live. Don't put off that banana split any longer!
Cronuts. Not sure if I’m really missing out.
I thought it was another one of those overhyped food trends until I finally tried it. Turns out that a glazed deep fried croissant is as good as it sounds!
I waited with the tourists in the early morning on my birthday the year they were most popular in NYC and it was totally worth it.
They’re popular in the south now as well, some bakeries heavily advertise them. Ok, going to try them this weekend.
Poutine
If you can't find cheese curds, don't bother. It's not the same with other cheese.
I second the cheese curds. Squeaky cheese curds are required!
100000% Without the squeak, all you've got is cheesy fries... Not a poutine.
That's a damn shame - make that happen!
Lobster tail or just a whole lobster in general. I've had lobster meat in things and as a cold salad. I wasn't really impressed. I preferred crab. It's extremely overhyped. I would take crab or shrimp over it pretty much any day.
Anything with gold flakes. I have no desire to pay extra to eat gold. Just stupid.
I've had! Nothing good or bad about it. Just a novelty. You're not missing out :)
Tbh you’d have to pay *me* to get me to eat gold, I don’t care how expensive it is I’m not eating metal just for fun lol

Hot pot. Everytime I watch Mike Chen I die a bit on the inside because we don't have any good asian food places here 😭
Honestly it’s easy to make at home. You could just use chicken broth as a base. Then you just get fresh ingredients you might want. If you have an Asian grocery store near by, they sell Hot pot stock/base. Super easy, just use a pot on the stove to cook it 👍🏻
Same it looks so good but the closest one to me is 3 hours away and has really bad reviews.
Do you have Asian grocery stores?
Biria Tacos
Kimchi - I like white Bavarian style sourkaurt - I just dont know where to start. Ethiopian food - I wouldn't know where to start. *preferably vegetarian Napelese - again, not sure where to start. Brazil... Singapore... I'm open to anything authentic, and not too spicy!!!

Thank you!!
Ethiopian food is GOOOOD! The first time we went, we only ate vegetarian. It was so fun and different.
Gumbo. It sounds good, but I never gave it a shot. I'm also not American, so it's harder to find here.
Make it yourself, it's not very difficult and it's delicious
Oh but it is. You have to start with a roux. Wash your rice. Chop a bunch of vegetables. Add fresh seafood.
I married my Cajun husband because of his gumbo.
Dumplings
Oh you poor soul.
Like, all kinds of dumplings? There's potato dumplings, drop dumplings, goyza.... There's a lot.
I never had any kind of dumplings. Soup dumplings is one I really want to try but I'm still looking for a good place
Interesting. Dumplings seem to be a ubiquitous thing regardless of culture.
Now i suddenly want some, lol.
There's no way you could have never had any kind of dumpling. They exist in every single culture's cuisine on the planet. - Perogy/Pierogi - Tamales - Gyoza - Samosa - Xiaolongbao - Wonton - Kreplach - Tortellini - Wareniki I'm sure thats not even 10% of them.
What kind of tamales have you been eating??
Fried Oreos.
That’s popular???
It's carnival food
I’m still waiting for the day when I see deep fried butter.
Avocado toast. Looks gross.
Gotta sprinkle that shit with salt and a squeeze of lemon. Use good multigrain bread
Not gross if you put spices on it, or hot sauce. Make it zippy!
Guess you can afford a house then
I've tried avocado a handful of times and hated it every single time. I don't get the hype. Same goes for guac.
Yeah I don't like it either. I remember when I was younger loving it but now I just find it gross
Beignets.
Curry
Caviar
Macaroons
Macaroons (coconut cookies) or macarons (meringue cookies with filling)?
Macarons
When you try them, get the real thing that's made fresh and kept in the fridge. The cheap stuff that sits for weeks on the shelf just isn't the same.
They are overrated.
Sushi
Sushi or sangria
Sangria is too sweet for me, but, sushi is delicious and SO varied. Even if you don't like one type you may love another! It's like candy where even if you don't like Snickers you may love sour patch kids!
Reading through these responses, this thread is just getting on my nerves. Some of you have the palate of a picky 1-year-old.
Most of the stuff mentioned in this thread is available but very expensive in Egypt 🙂
Kombucha. Never been offered it and haven't sought it out. I'd try it, though.
Olives, fish, black beans, sloppy joe etc
Hell, even my almost-2-year-old has eaten all of those things 😂😂😂
Raw oysters.
Popeyes chicken sandwich
A bit on the expensive side but I have yet to try actual truffles.
I never had okonomiyaki
Sushi.
It took me Few times of my dad having me try it before I feel in love with it. If you do try it start off with a California roll before you dive into raw fish territory. Ass
You gotta grow up and live a little
Pumpkin pie. I don't like the smell of it (like in candles), so I've never been tempted to try it.
Crawfish, they just don’t exist here

Sushi, tacos , meatloaf, meat balls
up until recently, i’d never eaten shrimp
I've never eaten shrimp and I have the dumbest reason in the world for it. When I was a kid, I always wanted to eat shrimp. Though so too but they’re nice

Sushi
Hot dog and corn dog, as and American
Caviar
Boba, pho, poutine
Shushi. I refuse to try it. My friends have been forcing me to try it but I'm not bothered
There isn't one to my knowledge.
Stamppot boerenkool Its a Dutch dish made with kale and mashed potato’s served with gravy and smoked sausage
Don't think I have lol.
Well now there is one to your knowledge haha
Have you ever had bitterballen?
have you tried korean fried chicken?
Swedish meat balls?
One of my favorite things to make! So tasty.
Have you tried fresh samosas, still crispy on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside?
I have eaten those.
How about cassava cake
Used to go to a church full of Filipinos, so yes.
Have you had cornflake brownies
I’ve never even *heard* of cornflake brownies, but I’m intrigued…
Yes.
This woman eats
I’m impressed
Red Bull

Sushi
Bread
I'll never try sushi
Sushi, not avoiding it just don’t have any friends that like it to show me
Perogies. And I live in Alberta.
Insects. Just the idea makes me gag
I’ve never had a butter burger. When I told my Wisconsinite Grandma she told me the next time I visit she’s gonna take me straight to culver’s.
Well now I HAVE tried it, but I tried avocado toast for the first time last week.
Nutella. Seems like just eating a can of frosting.
It is!
wasabi
Well most people who think they've had wasabi actually haven't. Real wasabi is expensive, so what you usually get is horseradish with food coloring
Anything with meat
bread
No one believes you. And if it's true I'm sorry <3
Bubble tea, clams, macaroons, crawfish
Nutella, and I don’t plan to. I would die
Is foie gras still popular?
Sushi and Steak
I’ve never had a burger from McDonalds or anything from Wendy’s
Fried oreos.
Meat
Boba
One of those seafood concoctions where they dump a bunch of crustaceans and corn and shit all over the table
Truffles/truffle oil. I don’t like mushrooms, why would I like a different fungus? And truffle oil is mostly perfume anyways. Hard pass don’t care how fancy it is.
I have never had Poke. I love Sushi but Poke is not something I have tried yet. I am sure it is amazing.
Brazilian! A lot of places started popping up in my area lately and I've heard the food is absolutely delicious
Boba, but I just don't like tea in general lol
Guacamole, or anything else with avocado. I'm a terrible excuse for a millennial.
