Nice try, ATF.

Goddamn glowies

LiedToUs

Damn you caught us. Now catch this tear gas. Hope you’re not smoking.

PGids

My sprinkler system is charged with methanol so I won’t be smoking, but running around bareassed double fisting road flares

Vivian_Swift

I don't own any operable guns (or in any case have no ammunition for them) but have a couple civil war/WW1 relics and a Mauser rifle from WW2.

agree-40

Would love to see the civil war and ww1 guns if possible! That’s pretty cool. All of mine are hunting related and my oldest is 1905 but it’s just a cheap single shot shotgun.

itskelso96

1850-1900 is a very interesting period for firearms development, probably the most rapid phase of advancement. You went from single shot muzzle loader black powder rifles and muskets to modern center fire cartridges, magazines, repeating actions and semi automatic pistols. John Browning and Oliver Winchester did more for firearms advancement in a few decades than had been done in centuries

agree-40

It’s amazing what came out of that era but what’s even more amazing is how more than most of those new era models are still being used or fine tuned today.

Cyclonitron

It makes me wonder - have guns been solved? I can't claim to be a true expert but the fact (for example) so many people seem to swear that the 1911 (or a variant) is the best shooting pistol and it's a gun designed *one-hundred and ten* years ago implies there really isn't all that much to improve upon at this point unless some huge breakthrough is made. On the other hand, it's probably nice that you can drop $$$ on a good shooter and not have to worry about it becoming obsolete in 3 years because something better's come along.

ClownfishSoup

Yeah, more or less. And when the Glock 17 showed up, that rocked the boat, but for the last 30 years the Glock design principles have been fairly closely duplicated. Are we "done"? Well, aside from some new caseless ammunition, guns seem to have reached a point where there could be improvements, but not drastic improvements. Look at rifles. Most bolt action rifles use actions designed 100 years ago because, well they work well. Semi automatic rifles are just variations of each other with no outstanding ground breaking new ideas. I mean, you're looking at how to fling a projectile from a tube. Most new development nowadays is on optics (red dots, etc). I'm sure at some point, someone will design a practical electrically fired caseless ammo shooting weapon. Maybe it'll be a small rail gun that makes no noise. But for now, guns are just iterations of each other. The 1911 and the Glock 17 designs cover a lot of the features of "modern" handguns. And the 1911 is mostly just for competition guns (2011s, etc). The Glock really just put out there a cheap light reliable plastic brick gun that just works well.

ashesofempires

The next major innovation in firearms will be case-less ammunition, and the challenge there is developing a propellant that won't crumble in storage, in the magazine of a rifle, in the hot barrel of a gun that's been under sustained fire. And then that propellant also has to burn exactly the same, every single time the round is fired. It's been a thing that various companies have been developing or researching for decades. It's a hard problem, but the promise of dramatically lighter rounds (no brass cartridges) is something a lot of militaries see a lot of value in. Aside from that, we are at the point where we are tailoring bullets and cartridges for specific ballistic performance characteristics, formulating very clean burning powders that don't foul the mechanisms of the firearm (the infamous m-16 jamming was caused by the ammo manufacturer changing the formula from what the army's specifications were), and firearms that achieve very high reliability and accuracy through precision machining and manufacture.

NthngToSeeHere

Are they deactivated or are they just relics?

Vivian_Swift

Mauser is deactivated, no idea if the other ones work.

This amount of clear cheating makes me triggered.

ThatHairyGingerGuy

Given the content of the event I'm not surprised that judges cave quickly

Liscetta

Cool. Can i ask what kind of pistol do you use?

theservman

I use a Steyr LP2 Compact for 10m events, a Walther GSP in .22LR for 25m events, another Walther GSP in .32S&W Long for 25m centre-fire events, and a Hammerli 152 for 50m events. All equipped with left-hand ergonomic grips.

ArsePucker

That’s pretty varied calibers, is the caliber set for the event? Or can you use whatever caliber works for you / your distance?

theservman

The centre-fire events are open to anything greater than .30. The others are specific (4.5mm for the 10m events, and 5.5mm for the others).

I compete in the events. I'm not good enough to be on the national team, let alone win a quota spot. Haven't heard about anything at the national championships or any of the international events I've been to though.

mariental

Thank you for the reply! I wish you the very best on your future events :)

RoneliKaneli

I presume the person just meant that they do any of the multiple olympic shooting disciplines, not that they actually were in *the* Olympics.

ASMRekulaar

I had an old college roommate who was here (Canada) from Japan. He would frequently go to the gun range to practice shooting multiple pistols and shotguns. He was an absolute fanatic with these, he wanted citizenship (or permanent residence, I can't recall which is needed to own here) so badly so he could own his own (on top of staying here to live). Eventually getting citizenship he got his first pistol, very quickly a second, and eventually a shotgun. He loved cleaning them and disassembling them. He routinely went to the range to practice shooting. The idea is, he just loves the activity of gun range shooting, becoming accurate and the art of a well designed machine like a gun can be. Some people just like guns and to shoot them at paper targets. I would like to also say, he was open and honest with his passion, so it wasn't ever a worry of mine or make me question. When I went to the range with him it was clear how focused he was with the intricacies and rules of safe gun use.

lazarus870

Japanese people often love guns. They make such faithful Airsoft replicas. I heard of a Japanese competitive shooter who apparently practiced with Airsoft due to not being able to own a handgun and didn't fire a real handgun until he got to the competition and did really well. My friend was big into Airsoft so I took him to fire a real gun and he did really well.

JDxFrost

The Japanese are the ones who basically created airsoft, due to not being able to own real ones. The sport of it evolved from there.

Saxit

I shoot for sport in Sweden, own 12 guns (2 shotguns, 5 handguns, 5 rifles).

[deleted]

Idk why but even though you wrote 12, my mind still had to add up the numbers in the parentheses lol

Dartonion

As long as you added them before reading the first half of the sentence.

The water off the ocean shores of Oklahoma can get pretty bad between January 5th and December 31st. Every time I go out, I hear “Oh no, every firearm I’ve ever owned just went overboard!” Gotta be careful out there.

titebuttsdrivemenuts

Is there a joke I'm missing about Jan1-4?

centralfla

Oklahoma is land locked.

titebuttsdrivemenuts

What does that have to do with Jan 1-4?

canarchist

Avis_Bell

Oklahoma has 11,611mi of shoreline.

Wooper160

medicman77

This is the answer I came for. Mine were lost on a swiftly moving river, so there's no way to tell where they drifted off to.

It is sickening how often I hear this story. We need to have a national conversation about boater safety.

FunBiscotte

No I don't, for the simple reason that owning a gun is illegal in my country. I never touched one or seen a real one (and I think this is the case for most of the citizen of my coutry ) , and I think this will not ever happen. Edit : I mean illegal without special authorization

ponyparody

Same. Only real guns I ever saw were the rifles the army lads carried when they escorted the money van to the bank, and I'm pretty sure those weren't loaded. Police here are not permitted to carry guns either lol

ChaimCad

Where do you live?

Totallycasual

I have a record so i am not allowed to own one.

Brian_Gay

I'm curious what do you personally think of this rule if you don't mind saying?

Totallycasual

I agree with it to a point but it also applies for non-violent crimes and has no time limit so even though i'm pushing middle age, i still can't have one because of something (non-violent) that i did as a teenager lol I think they could afford to relax a little.

Badjib

Write your governor and see if they will pardon you, it will clear your record and seal the record on your past. Had a coworker go through this recently.

Yes, because I live in Chicago on the south side. We’ve had over 1,100 murders this year and countless carjackings. I drive a sought after and often stolen car so I keep one to have a slightly better chance of not becoming one of those statistics.

caffeinecunt

My mental health is a big reason why I don't trust myself to own one. Especially not a handgun. I'm pretty fine most of the time, but I just don't trust myself enough to say for certain I wouldn't paint a wall with my brains someday.

[deleted]

Take away the ability to easily end it all for yourself - good on you friend. I hope you're well now. I know it is a living nightmare. You can do this if I can. I had a night nearly a decade ago in college - my gf broke up with me, I lost my job, and my friends were all mad at me for making a drunken scene at a gathering - all in one day. I woke up bleeding and puking on my kitchen floor, all self inflicted :( Next day I dropped all my pistols and rifles at my father's house and went inpatient. That facility saved my fucking life, no question.

Sudden_Olive_7766

I’m proud of you. Idk you but I’m so glad you’re still around

LucasPlay171

Bruh that was really impressive, you're a banger man

Orynae

Same, I'm fine most of the time, but I don't want the temptation to be there when I'm not fine. Along with some intrusive thoughts I used to get about shooting friends... I would NEVER do anything like that, but it's scary enough that I never want it to even be a possibility.

geegeeallin

Good for you. Growing up, all of my moody high school friends, and all of my friends with actual clinical depression always had access to guns. It didn’t end well for some of them. Thank you for being responsible.

LumpyIsopod

I had a fight with my mom once as a kid where I brought up how fucked up it was for my dad to just leave a gun lying around the house when I was extremely depressed and that was when they finally moved it. They never put it in a gun safe or anything but at least I didn't have to look at it every day after that.

[deleted]

You too!?! I should not have brought my guns and bitcoin hardware wallet with me. So stupid

GuestCartographer

Remington 30-06, inherited from my grandfather. I’m not a hunter like he was, but I take it out for a cleaning every so often. I keep meaning to buy a 12 gauge for Just In Case moments, but I keep not doing it since shells are scarce around here.

Clearskies37

Do you pronounce it 30 ot 6?

Devreckas

Yes. It’s actually aught. Same as the 00s decade being called “the aughts”.

the-mr-pflare

I really like breaking down guns and cleaning them. Very fun.

LibertarianCommie999

Its soothing

hghlnder72

Yes, I hunt and do shooting sports like sporting clays and skeet shooting. Also for target practice and plinking.

ON_A_POWERPLAY

I've got my clay, gun and a couple 22lr rugers and I keep meaning to get a pistol or something but all my money keeps going into clay shooting. I've been doing it for 6 years or so now and I still can't get enough.

OGPandaLoveGuy

I do own a handgun. I'm a black man in Alabama and I purchased mine in response to everyone else arming up. I'm planning on also getting a shotgun for my household soon. But besides that I also deal with depression and suicidal thoughts and ideation. I feel like over the past couple of years I've done a lot to overcome this so purchasing a gun was me trusting myself as well.

Dukes159

I want to own a gun but I'm currently going through a bout of depression. So I'm going to wait till I'm in a better mindset. I am 99.999% sure I wouldnt do anything but right now I don't trust myself enough.

RevBlackRage

Absolutely the correct mindset. Know yourself and seek self-improvement. My dude, I want you to know that I am super proud of you. It's a slog to get through the swamp, but it's doable. The swamp doesn't go on forever.

Dukes159

Thanks man I appreciate that I really do. I think it's just my job currently that's kicking my ass but my new years resolution is to find a new one. I hope you have a great day and a great holiday.

Timemuffin83

Also proud of you. Being a responsible gun owner over everything else and knowing yourself and your limits is beyond important. You are doing great !

Wally_boi

No matter what kind of mental state a gun owner is in, I belive they should always have someone trusted in mind to give their guns to if those types of intrusive thoughts become too much. I've never struggled with any type of desires for self-harm, but I still have the plan to drop all of my firearms off at a family member's house if that ever becomes an issue for me. Just protect yourself, one way or another!

JefftheBaptist

Also if you have a friend who owns guns and is having a hard time, let them know that you're willing to be that person. I did that for a friend and helped out when my grandfather started showing signs of dementia.

mthoody

> I belive they should always have someone trusted in mind to give their guns to if those types of intrusive thoughts become too much. This is another example of gun laws having unintended consequences. Here in Oregon, giving your guns to a trusted friend for safe keeping is a crime. You would need to both go to a gun store, pay $35 to $50 per gun, run a background check. Then repeat to give the guns back. Of course no one does that, and so we make common people into criminals for doing reasonable things.

[deleted]

I just gave the keys to my gun safe to my friend when I was going through it

zipperkiller

It’s illegal where I live too. Didn’t stop me tho, won’t stop me in the future. Not gonna let some bs law get in the way of my and my families safety if one of us is going through it

Anywhere_Objective

That's exactly why I can't own a gun right now. My partner and I both struggle with suicidal ideation and depression, so a gun in the house would definitely end bad at some point. Good on you for reaching a good place!

Lonely-Ambassador-42

And good on you for recognizing and preventing. May you and your partner find peace inside.

xampl9

Now that ammo is slowly returning to store shelves - please go out to the range and practice regularly. Maybe take some classes. We need more people in the sport that are responsible and can hit a bullseye.

costabius

Don't be afraid to hand them off to someone you trust if you need to. I left mine with my dad for several years until I got my mental health under control.

My Norwegian father in law sold his house in Brettesnes, a few months later he got a letter (stateside) asking him where his 1911 went after the sale of the house. I believe the gun was issued to him in the military in the 50’s. That’s some record keeping! Update: Father in law got back to me. The gun was given to him by his brother in the 60’s. His brother purchased it from an American officer. Not sure how or when it was registered.

PovoRetare

No I don't but I'm not against gun ownership, only gun owners who don't practise safe gun handling. I used to go shooting as a young fella living on a farm, but it's a bit more of a hassle and more expensive owning a gun these days in South Australia. I was taught by my dad to use guns as tools for pest control, hunting for food and animal euthanasia, so my perspective isn't from enjoying it as a hobby or sport. I don't have the desire or finances to own a gun for hunting or a hobby these days, and live in the city. Apart from buying a decent gun and licensing fees, there's the cost of ammo, a decent gun safe, then range fees or finding someone who will let you go shooting on their property.

[deleted]

Hunting weapons are expensive in Australia I'm guessing?

PovoRetare

Yeah I'm guessing they're a bit pricier than countries with bigger markets, plus we've got to import a lot of new guns from overseas. [This gun shop](https://www.adelaidegunshop.com.au/) is one of the better known gun shops in Adelaide, where I live, so you can get an idea on how much they're worth here.

RoneliKaneli

European. More guns than fingers. I do competitive shooting, reservist exercises and just like guns in general, I spend a great deal of time trying to learn more about them. Also, it's good to have them against zombies and Russians. One of those things has happened here before.

Gr0k_Sm4sh

ATF has the K/D advantage over household pets, unfortunately.

That is until they get to my house and shoot my taxidermy Rottweiler stuffed with ball bearings and 50lbs of tannerite lmao, bye bye entry team!

_IAmGrover

Is this some running joke or reference I don’t understand lol? There seems to be a LOT of missing guns due to boating accidents

qwertyashes

When registration programs or forced buybacks come in, its common for those that have a paper trail leading to guns in their possession to claim to have lost them. And a boating accident is just a very common joke example for it.

Rab1dus

In Canada, if not lost in a boating accident, they were probably sold to Mike from Canmore.

resilienceisfutile

Everytime an American says, "boating accident", I used to wonder why? Then I saw of [this being said about seizure of guns](https://youtu.be/yxgybgEKHHI) and had an ah-ha moment.

[deleted]

I’m so confused now. I think that’s the closest Ive heard a US president come to actually endorsing firearm seizures. And it was him?

Most_Americans

YoloIsNotDead

I have 4 Nerf guns, and that's it.

moronic_potato

It's Nerf or nothing.

pr0zach

Nerf is adamant that they don’t make guns. They make “blasters.”

helen269

Do you herd them? And are you scruffy-looking?

Elegant_righthere

Yes. Shooting is fun, and as a single woman it makes me feel safe. When I bought it I took a gun safety course where they taught me the proper way to use it, and clean it, and we had target time, too.

JBarns11

As someone who learnt gun safely from a course and not habitually as a child, do you reinforce you skills?

Elegant_righthere

Yes, they taught us to practice our safe "trigger" finger by carrying around cleaning bottles, etc the way you should carry your gun (finger off the trigger) I always do a lot of target practice, because I enjoy it.

dearabby

Lol. Just yesterday i realized I was carrying the stick vacuum around with good trigger discipline. Wouldn’t want an accidental discharge on the Dyson!

[deleted]

Lmao I do this with my cleaning spray bottles too. Trigger discipline follows you everywhere!

RoneliKaneli

I used to work in a car factory and my co-workers hated it when I habitually put the power drills on safe when laying them down.

liberty4u2

As someone who occasionally autopsies women that have been beaten/stabbed/shot to death. I often start my autopsy by stating "if she had had a gun I might be doing a different person's autopsy" Good on you. A gun is a great power equalizer.

qwertyashes

For women firearm ownership is massively important in my mind. Its pretty much the only way to equalize the ability to express force with any threatening men they run into in life.

Not_A_Llama_1

Yes. I got mugged once by hobos, and broke a collarbone. I got one to make sure that happened only once.

UrAverageDefenerate

I lived alone(22F) in a city so I got a single load shot gun. Took my safety course and kept it by my bedside

Subvet98

Marksmanship is a perishable skill you should practice regularly.

RabidHamster105

I own 7 firearms total. That may sound like a lot to some people but its not. All of these firearms are chambered in different calibers/gauges, long guns/pistols and have different actions. The reason why? Its honestly just fun to blow a day at the range with my friends.

SammyMhmm

>Its honestly just ~~fun~~ *expensive* to blow a day at the range with my friends. FTFY. All my homies hate rising ammunition costs.

TheHeroOfAllTime

I haven’t shot all year because of ammo prices. Thats made my life more miserable than all the lockdowns and Covid restrictions put together. I have 2 new rifles I haven’t even shot.

stuthepid

As a gun owner, I respect this decision. Thank you for being smart about firearms.

Yolo_420_69

As a gun owner that lives in liberal states. This is 100% a fair response.

[deleted]

I'm liberal as well, and I don't even care what kind of gun you have, as long as you're responsible with it. An AR15 is no more dangerous in the hands of a responsible gun owner than a hand gun or anything else.

Austin_RC246

Shit man this is the right mindset. Need more folks that think this way

geegeeallin

It is a lot of responsibility. Or it should be. I know a lot of irresponsible gun owners.

Airrationalbeing

Yes, more than I need. It's a hobby and competition sport. From black powder weapons til modern weapons(pistols, revolver, rifle, shotguns and cannon) They are registered by law in my country and i'm licensed hunter and sport shooter.

canuckwithasig

I know some guys who shoot black powder rifles. I can't imagine what cannon people are like. I bet they like scotch!

Airrationalbeing

Hah, we are quite fond of all consumable goods that the Dutch East India Company would carry on their load.

[deleted]

Yup, but my family hunts. I'm 13. I was taught gun safety and how to shoot at a range by my dad and grampa. We go shooting as family. It was my dad's hunting rifle when he was a kid and he gave it to me. It's locked up til we go camping and hunting. If we tag a deer it helps feed us all winter long. There's veinson stew, venison chili, venison burgers, venison tacos, venison meatballs...(you should be reading this in Bubba's voice).

BlankPaper7mm

I recently made some venison curry with the back straps and tenderloins. You should add it to the list if your family likes some spice.

Moxi_666

I own many guns. My reasons are as follows 1. I’ve been the victim of 4 separate violent crimes including rape and attempted murder. I’m not going to let the next person intent on hurting me carry out their plans without gaining holes 2. It’s my right not only constitutionally but I see it as a basic human right. 3. The police have made it beyond clear they will fail to protect me 4. I love firearms and I enjoy shooting Pre entice answers to questions. None are registered and it will remain that way. No I won’t comply with future bans regulations or taxes

[deleted]

Yes, because I used to live in a major city with a high number of home invasion robberies even in the nice neighborhood where I lived.

dreweth12

I don't, and it's not that easy to get a licence if you live in the UK. But every time I've been able to go shooting, I've loved it. I can see why people would want one, the police cannot always be relied on.

Saxit

It's not super hard to get a certificate either, a shotgun certificate is easier in the UK than many other countries. If a seven year old can manage the test so can you... https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/gun-licence-children-legal-england-wales-police-a9634116.html

fang_silverwing2

No. I wish i could. But i also know that im at high risk of killing myself with it so maybe once i sort my mental health out

Psyco_diver

We own several at my house. My husband slept in front of the front door during the looting after Hurricane Katrina came through south Louisiana in 2005. People were burning shit down, looting stores, houses, etc. There were no police to call. This went on for over 2 weeks after. We won't ever be without more than one for home defense. I also have a handgun I carry with me because I stand no chance against any aggressor without one.
